COUNTRY CHIC: Gilpin Hotel & Lake House

LUXURY LAKES

The Lake District National Park is home to some of the most stunning scenery in the country. Whether you take it all in on one of the many lakes in the region, or scale the highest mountains England has to offer to enjoy the jaw dropping view, you will be captivated by its beauty. It is easy to see how the likes of William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter were inspired by the beauty of the lakes, and why it is one of the most popular areas in the UK to spend some well-earned down time. With this in mind, we have chosen five luxury retreats to make sure your stay in the lakes is extra special:

6

HOLBECK GHYLL

It’s all about the staggering scenery, culinary genius and relaxation at Holbeck Ghyll, a former hunting lodge perched high above Lake Windermere. Now a warm and inviting hotel, where old world meets a modern edge, service is instinctive, natural and thoughtful (expect a welcoming hot water bottle in your bed on a cold night). Rooms and suites are spread across three areas: the main house with Arts and Crafts dÊcor, oak-panelled walls, classic William Morris prints and roaring fires; the contemporary eight-bedroom Lodge comprising interconnecting and dog-friendly rooms; and two cottages (Renee

TRAVEL

Zellweger stayed in the Miss Potter Suite while filming Miss Potter, the Beatrix Potter biopic). These smart cottages are perfect for mini-breaks and include special touches such as spa baths. Holbeck’s oak-panelled restaurant serves up first class offerings, from breakfasts of Cumbrian air-dried ham and free-range eggs, and afternoon teas with delicate cakes to fivecourse gourmet dinners featuring tian of crab and Cumbrian lamb. Outside, the natural playground of the Lakes presents endless opportunities to cycle, climb, walk and sail. But, for lazier days, there’s always the escape of the health spa offering LaStone therapy, ESPA enzyme facials and reflexology. 01539 432 375 www.holbeckghyll.com

LAKESIDE HOTEL & SPA

Sensationally picturesque and uniquely located, Lakeside Hotel & Spa on the edge of Lake Windermere is a classic and relaxed luxury Lake District hotel. Many of the bedrooms and suites overlook the picturesque lakes, and ground floor rooms open onto private patios. Families are welcome here with a selection of suites and interconnecting rooms. In the kitchen, traditional Cumbrian favourites are on the menu, served in the highlycommended Lakeview Restaurant

STAGGERING SCENERY: Holbeck Gyhll

To achieve an authentic Lake District experience, cruises are available adjacent to the hotel and contemporary John Ruskin’s Brasserie & Bar. Dishes at John Ruskin’s also showcase traditional fare, the ingredients of which are sometimes shared within the Chef ’s blog so you can try it out at home. To achieve an authentic Lake District experience, cruises are available adjacent to the hotel ready for your exploration and adventure but in case of inclement weather, Lakeside Hotel’s pool and spa (exclusive to hotel residents) provides a pampering alternative. The huge indoor pool, gym, sauna, steam room and Aveda treatment rooms complete the picture. 015395 30001 www.lakesidehotel.co.uk

CEDAR MANOR

Cedar Manor Hotel and Restaurant in the Lake District may be chocolate-box from the outside, but step inside and it is a whole different story. Everything is high-end and country home chic, in-keeping with its original Victorian gothic style yet refreshingly smart. It’s easy to imagine the original Victorian gentleman of

the house surveying his garden and resting by the dominating cedar tree; perhaps admiring the house’s brickwork and tall arched windows. Today, its eco-conscious owners Jonathan and Caroline Kaye who care for this romantic boutique retreat with 10 newly refurbished bedrooms (available for exclusive hire) just half a mile from Lake Windermere. Some rooms have views to the Lake and Langdale Pikes, while the renowned two-storey Coach House Suite is packed with “wow” factors (super-kingsize bed, huge double bathroom with stand-alone air bath and walk-in wet room) whilst special touches such as spa baths grace the rooms and suites in the main house. This is also where you’ll find the fine-dining restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner with a seasonally-led menu that’s become a local attraction. New to Cedar Manor: the all-day snack menu and front patio for relaxing during warmer months. 015394 43192 www.cedarmanor.co.uk

Set in around 450 acres of parkland, this 4 Red Star hotel faces not only the pretty Bassenthwaite Lake but also the imposing Skiddaw Mountain and Lake District Fells. When a property is run with the unwavering passion that’s expressed by the Cunliffes, it shows in every detail. Owned and managed by the family since 1988, Gilpin Hotel & Lake House in Windermere spans across two estates. The 20-acre Gilpin Hotel INDULGENT: Gilpin Hotel & Lake House

The Spa Lodges are exceptionally romantic and provide an indulgent spa experience. estate is where you’ll find 25 country chic bedrooms, Junior Suites, Garden Suites (each with their own outdoor cedar wood hot tub) and the recently opened Spa Lodges. BEAUTY REVIEW

LOOK YOUNGER & MORE RADIANT WITH A NEW TREATMENT AT HÀNA BEAUTY CLINIC

Dawn Wilson tries out the innovative Guinot Hydraderm Cellular Energy Machine, a new addition to the acclaimed Hàna Beauty Clinic in Whitley Bay.

I

t’s perfectly natural to want to look as youthful as you feel inside. It is also important to know you have anti-ageing options that don’t involve surgery, expense or pain. Hydraderm Cellular Energy facials are an alternative to aesthetic medicine, such as Botox or fillers, with its range of anti-ageing, clinically proven treatments using a combination of Dynamic Ionisation, Thermal Energy and Lifting Stimulation. I was invited along to Hàna Beauty Clinic by Emma, the salon owner, to try this innovative new treatment. The clinic has yet again been awarded the status of Guinot Crown Salon 2017. This coveted title celebrates the highest achieving Guinot salons and spas in the UK and Ireland who demonstrate success, dedication and loyalty to the brand. By visiting a Crown Salon, clients can be confident that they are choosing a Guinot salon of the highest distinction with flawless principles in environment, customer care and treatment expertise, so I knew I was in good hands! My treatment began with a consultation on any issues I had with my skin, so Emma could target these areas. I have combination skin, but some really dry patches on my cheeks due to cold weather and central heating. Emma then left me to remove my top and lie on the bed, covering myself with a towel. She then began with a soothing welcome massage around neck and shoulders, followed by a thorough Cleanse and exfoliation. Next was the first step using the cellular energy machine, where Emma applied bespoke serum gels to my face, eyes, neck and décolleté. The gels were then massaged into my skin using metal rollers. Emma said that I might sometimes feel a tiny little charge of electricity over more sensitive areas however I feel nothing except the tiniest sensation under my nose, not remotely painful. These electrical charges cause the serums to be pushed into the skin and the current (dynamic ionisation) causes 'chaos ' within the cells waking them up, helping to regenerate and plump up the skin. Extraction of blocked pores/blackheads then occurs. The lift part of the facial is next, with lymphatic drainage

20

to remove toxins from the skin. Emma used the machine to stimulate my facial muscles, which tones and lifts muscles (this part can be done as a facial on its own as an intensive non-surgical face lift course). I could really feel my muscles contracting, so I knew it must be working! The final step was perfect for decongesting the skin, increasing the circulation and increasing energy within the cells, in other words giving you a real boost! Oxygenating cream is massaged into the skin with heated 'mini iron ' using thermal energy. This step was really soothing. Finally, Emma cleansed off all the products applied an eye and firming face mask, whilst giving me a wonderful hand and arm massage.

Afterwards my skin was glowing, fresh and smooth, I looked rejuvenated and rested! Afterwards my skin was glowing, fresh and smooth, I looked rejuvenated and rested! I'm still feeling the after effects a few days later, much longer than I've felt before from a facial. The cost of the facial I received was £92, and definitely worth the money, but prices start from as little as £50 for the Lift Facial, and they can be tailored to meet your specific needs. I would recommend giving the girls at Hana a call and they can advise you as to the best option for you. A course of treatments is advised for long lasting results, but a one off can be booked if you need a pick me up. (although I guarantee you'll be so pleased with how your skin looks and feels you'll really want to book more!) MATFEN HALL

SEAHAM HALL, DURHAM

Matfen Hall, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE20 0RH; www.matfenhall.com

Seaham Hall Hotel, County Durham SR7 7AG www.seaham-hall.co.uk

Matfen Hall is a converted stately home, surrounded by over 300 acres of land, boasting 53 rooms and suites which combine traditional design with contemporary facilities; and the odd four-poster bed! Dining is in The Library and Print Room, which unsurprisingly denotes the artistic traditions of the aristocracy and has two AA Rosettes for its seasonal cuisine. For lighter meals and snacks, there is also the Conservatory Bistro with views of the golf course. The spa and leisure club at Matfen Hall is an award winning, contemporary addition, that the original proprietors would no doubt approve of thanks to a gym, aerobics studio, a 16-metre UV filtered pool, a hot tub, herbal sauna, crystal steam room, ice fountain, tropical feature shower and salt grotto. Dedicating itself to the pampering element of a country escape, the spa has five treatment suites including a dual room, where therapists use Elemis to deliver therapies including facials, wraps, massages, reflexology and thermo auricular therapy as well as head-to-toe rituals. They also use Orly nail treatments for manicures and pedicures and MAC cosmetics for make-up consultations.

Half an hour from Durham city centre, Seaham Hall is an iconic building in the style of a Georgian country house, dating back to 1791. Today it is a five star hotel, with 22 suites that treasures its rich history and retains its eccentric character alongside contemporary interiors, all the while set against a backdrop of 37 acres of grounds perched on a cliff top. There are two restaurants at the hotel that highlight the local and seasonal produce from the surrounding area. Byron’s Restaurant delivers a classical menu in a contemporary environment, while Ozone at Seaham Hall is a spherical outdoor terrace with views of the gardens offering an informal, brasserie-style space, combining Eastern ingredients with European cuisine Offset by the scenic location, the award winning Serenity Spa at Seaham Hall is true to its name, providing a relaxed environment for wellbeing and some well-earned pampering as well. Facilities include a fitness suite, 20-metre pool with massage stations, sanarium with crystal light therapy, sauna, snail showers, hydrotherapy pool, ice fountain, plunge pools, hammam, steam room, outdoor hot tubs and a roof garden.

ARE YOU HAVING PROBLEMS WITH YOUR DENTURE OR NEED A NEW ONE? Then can we introduce Alan Forrest, our Clinical Dental Technician If you are having problems with your denture it is best to visit your dentist or clinical dental technician who will be able to check your mouth is clean and healthy and ensure your denture fits properly. Sometimes dentures need to be adjusted or replaced.

COMMON PROBLEMS THAT DENTURES CAUSE: • Problems speaking and eating • Mouth ulcers and sores • Infection (thrush) caused by poor fitting dentures and poor denture cleanliness • Embarrassment from dentures moving

At Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice we are very fortunate to offer a denture service provided by Alan Forrest, a Clinical Dental Technician. A clinical dental technician is a dental technician who has extended their training to gain an additional qualification which allows them to be part of a dental team as a clinician, working directly with the patient to provide and make dentures.

THE ADVANTAGES OF ALAN, A CLINICAL DENTAL TECHNICIAN, MAKING A DENTURE FOR YOU

Alan would be involved in every stage of making a denture for you; he would do the clinical part in the surgery that your dentist would normally do, however he would also make the denture for you too! Before Alan provides a denture, he would assess your facial

32

features and how you smile and talk. He would discuss your needs and requirements and keep you informed throughout all the stages of making your denture. Alan would be able to fulfil your wishes by providing you with a functional, naturally looking bespoke denture tailored to your needs. Alan’s motto is “arrive as a patient and leave as a friend.”

EXAMPLES OF THE SERVICES ALAN CAN OFFER: Complete upper and lower dentures

If you have no teeth remaining in the upper and/or lower jaw Alan can give you back your confidence with complete dentures: • Improving the clarity of your speech • Helping you to feel more secure about eating the foods you want • Supporting sagging facial muscles and sunken features that can make you appear older (especially around your mouth, lips and cheeks) • Removing the need for denture fixative

Partial dentures

If one or several of your teeth are missing, Alan can restore your smile with a Partial Denture. By replacing your missing teeth, he can give you back the look and function of a full set of healthy, natural teeth. (If you have any of your own natural teeth you must first be examined by a dentist to ensure these are healthy. We can arrange this for you if you do not have your own dentist). So, if you are having problems with your denture or would like a new one, with over 35 years of experience and skill, why not choose Alan? Contact Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice on 01670 828402.

TOO SCARED TO GO TO THE DENTIST? We can help with Conscious Sedation Are you a nervous wreck when you have to go? Do you hate the sound, sight and smell of going to the dentist? Well, you are certainly not alone! From an adult dental survey1 just over a third of adults whom have ever been to the dentist have moderate anxiety, and a further 12 % have an extreme dental anxiety. This survey did not even include those of you that have never been to the dentist! It is not a surprise that being scared of the dentist is a huge barrier for some of you seeking dental care. However, not going to the dentist can have a huge impact on your oral health. Dental anxiety has been linked to feelings of low self esteem and found to have an effect on performance at work. It can also affect existing relationships as well as meeting new people2.

DO YOU WANT TO RECEIVE DENTAL CARE BUT FEEL TOO SCARED?

We can help you. At Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice, our experienced team are used to helping frightened patients embark on their dental journey. You should never feel embarrassed about your dental fear or the state of your teeth: we absolutely understand and will never judge anyone who has the courage to reach out for dental help. We have learned to listen to our nervous patients and understand their concerns. We take it slowly until you are ready to accept dental treatment.

There are 2 types of conscious sedation offered at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice; inhalational or intravenous sedation.

Inhalational sedation involves breathing oxygen and

nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas or happy air) through a small mask just on your nose. You breathe the happy air in and out through your nose and it makes you feel more relaxed, calm and able to cope with the dental treatment. At the end of treatment you simply breathe the happy air out and you feel fully recovered after about 10 minutes.

Intravenous sedation involves an injection either in the

back of your hand or arm with a drug called midazolam. Generally midazolam creates a slightly greater level of sedation than nitrous oxide. It may also make you forget what has happened during the first part of your sedation appointment. The drug is in your system much longer than with happy air and therefore you need someone to look after you, and are not allowed to drive or go to work until the affects have worn off after 24 hours.

"BUT I'M TOO SCARED AND JUST WANT TO BE KNOCKED OUT."

You will not be fully knocked out or put to sleep, (a general anaesthetic) in a dental practice, however conscious sedation is a good alternative. The sedation team at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice is lead by Joanne Duggan the principal dentist whom has an additional qualification, a postgraduate diploma in conscious sedation in dentistry, from Newcastle University. Joanne is supported by dental nurse Ally, who also has an additional qualification in conscious sedation.

If you are scared of the dentist but know you need some dental help, then go on. You can do it. Pick up the phone! Contact us at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice on 01670 828402 to arrange a chat. The longer you delay, the harder it becomes.

WOULD YOU LIKE

STRAIGHT TEETH?

Did you once spend years undergoing orthodontic treatment and unsightly braces only to see your teeth slowly slip back to their former wonky ways? Are you one of many who are generally unhappy with the alignment of your teeth and longing for a beautiful, straight smile? At Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice we are able to offer a range of orthodontic treatments for those of you who would like straight teeth, including Invisalign, Inman and Quick Straight Teeth. All these systems are cosmetic braces and not designed to correct more severe malaligned teeth, when ideally you should see a specialised orthodontist.

1

INVISALIGN® can give you the beautiful straight teeth you've always wanted. It works through a series of almost invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners or clear braces so no one can really tell you're wearing them. The Invisalign Process: • Invisalign uses digital 3-D technology to plan the movement of your teeth. • The position of your teeth at the beginning of treatment is recorded using a normal impression, from this we can create a digital image of your teeth as they are now. • Invisalign are then able to create your new smile on the computer and this animation shows the movement of your teeth from start to finish. • You are then able to comment on your finished result, making fine adjustments if required and when you are happy, and only when you are happy, the final invisible braces are made for you.

"How many aligners will I need?" This varies depending on the degree to which your teeth need to be moved. Typically you will wear each aligner for two weeks and then replace it with a new one. A typical treatment will require around 25 aligners, although this really does depend upon your individual case.

2

QUICK STRAIGHT TEETH is a great option for uneven front teeth. It won't correct major tooth misalignments or crooked back teeth.

One of the great advantages about this treatment is its simplicity. Your teeth are again assessed with computer technology and depending on your individual case you are provided with either clear aligners or a white fixed brace. These virtually invisible braces are an alternative to wearing regular metal braces. The average time you may need to wear the quick straight teeth brace is usually less than 6 months. Many people go through life with crooked teeth, wishing they had straighter teeth. Having a nice even smile boosts your confidence and self-esteem yet many people miss out on this opportunity. RECIPE

FRYING-PAN SPINACH SOUFFLÉ The word soufflé seems to strike fear into the hearts of even competent cooks, but this version is simple and accommodating. All you’re looking for is to get the eggs to rise slightly, then crisp a little on top, like a puffy omelette. You need a smallish frying pan which can go in the oven – 21–23cm in diameter. The two things to get right with any form of soufflé are to whisk your egg whites until you can tip the bowl over your head without them falling out (really!) and to fold them in gently to keep as much air in the mixture as possible.

SERVES 2 INGREDIENTS

300g spinach, washed, leaves stripped from their stalks * 4 eggs * ¼ tsp ground nutmeg * 1 good tsp wholegrain mustard * 75g grated Cheddar * Sunflower or light olive oil, for frying * Salt and pepper

METHOD

* Heat your oven to 210˚C/Gas 6. * Cook the spinach in a pan of boiling water for 1–2 minutes, until wilted. Drain and refresh in a bowl of cold water, then drain again. Wring it out with your hands to remove excess water, then roughly chop the leaves. * Separate the egg whites and yolks into 2 bowls.

Whisk the egg whites until they form firm but soft peaks – an electric whisk makes life easier. Lightly beat the egg yolks together. * Add the spinach to the yolks, then add the nutmeg, mustard and three quarters of the cheese. Season with salt and pepper. * Take a spoonful of the egg white and stir it into the egg yolk mixture, then very gently fold in the rest. * Pour 1 tablespoon of oil into a 21–23cm frying pan. Wipe the base and sides with kitchen paper to coat it. Heat the oil gently, then tip in the egg mix and tip the pan from side to side to cover it. * Sprinkle over the remaining cheese. Transfer the pan to the oven for 10 minutes, until the mixture has risen and is fluffy and slightly golden from the melted cheese on top. * Cut in half or wedges to serve.

OLD SCHOOL CHARM AT THE DOG & RABBIT

A former ladies dress shop has transformed into a popular micro-brew pub in the heart of Whitley Bay.

T

hink about Park View in Whitley Bay and what comes to mind? Clothes shops, a range of interiors shops, a good selection of café’s, hair and beauty outlets, estate agents. The street is bustling with life and brimming with independent businesses, but one of the things it is not renowned for, and has been lacking for years, is its very own pub. Well, it is lacking no more, as last year saw the opening of the Dog & Rabbit at number 36 Park View, right in the heart of the town. When the long standing ladies clothes shop Gabrielle, which used to occupy the premises, closed its doors last summer, husband and wife team Tony and Julie Patton seized the opportunity to give Park View one of the things it was lacking and, after a major renovation, opened the doors to the Dog & Rabbit pub and microbrewery. Tony had been home-brewing for a number of years, and is a long time champion of real ale and supporting local brewery’s. He wanted to make the pub exactly that – a pub. No gimmicks, no loud music, no television, no flashing lights, just good old fashioned proper beer and proper craic! The décor is ‘old school’ dark wood and deep rich red. The seating was made to order from a local charity, and the mahogany counter was rescued from a Cumbrian hotel, all adding to the authentic feel of the pub. The pumps fill your glass with local ales such as Box Social, Acton Ales, Three Kings, Anachy and the new Flash House Brewery. The pub is dog friendly, with doggy beer and doggy treats for sale, all accompanied by a doggy poop bag to take home!

38

No gimmicks, no loud music, no television, no flashing lights, just good old fashioned proper beer and proper craic! The micro-brewery is slowly getting up and running too, so watch out for even more local brew on the way! Tony told us ‘”We are really pleased with the response from the local community and real ale fans from the region. It was a gamble to take on a project like this, but we are both glad we did and haven’t looked back. The Whitley Bay community have been superb, one lady even painted a picture of a dog and a rabbit for us – how nice is that!” So if it is real ale, real conversation, in real surroundings you are after, there is no better destination in the local area than the Dog & Rabbit. HOME FROM HOME AT EOTHEN

In 2016 Eothen Homes, www.eothenhomes.org.uk, opened a brand new, purpose-built residential home for people living with dementia. Here Ron Ward, whose wife Margaret is a resident there, tells us why the specialist Wallsend development is second to none. Tell us a little about you and Margaret and why you chose Eothen Homes for her care. Around seven years ago there was the first evidence Margaret was suffering from Alzheimer’s. Her formal diagnosis came in 2012 and after this I became her carer for several years. In May 2015 Margaret needed a hospital stay. Following this it was clear she required specialist care so I spent time and energy looking for a suitable home. Unfortunately the home she went into was unable to cope with her various needs. Her lifestyle was very restrictive and her care inconsistent so much so that I used to take her out daily, sometimes all day to keep Margaret active and mentally stimulated. Thankfully at this time I was introduced to Judy Mattison, the manager at Eothen’s Wallsend development, who explained to me about its specialist care facility with its ‘butterfly approach’. This means the care workers respond to residents’ needs rather than follow a structured regime and it’s much more like living at home, just with 24 hour support and company as needed. Margaret moved in on its opening day and since then, we’ve never looked back. We have been incredibly pleased with her care. 44

What makes the actual Wallsend development different in terms of design? Eothen’s Wallsend site is a lovely place to live and spend time. The place has had a huge amount of thought put into it. Margaret is in one of four spacious households each with their own shared kitchen, dining and lounge area, which gives it a warm community feel. I spend a lot of time there and can easily go for a day and sit myself down in the Atrium with a book. In fact, I often volunteer time in the garden, helping to tend to the plants. The main thing is the amount of freedom that’s afforded to residents. Margaret was a PE teacher and needs mental and physical stimulation. From her room she can access the garden and walk round the expansive grounds in total security. She can also enjoy the Atrium when the weather’s poor and the various reminiscence areas and activities that take place. We also like the fact there is a Chapel on site so if Margaret or I wish to attend a service, we can do without the additional preparation that comes with taking her for a trip out, although we still go out and about, often to St Mary’s Lighthouse, very regularly.

What kind of care is provided? It’s possible to see what kind of care is provided from the warm welcome you get by staff on arrival. Margaret is very content and it’s not just down to the layout and atmosphere but the attention and time she gets from the team. There’s a real family feel and it’s very personalised so everyone gets exactly what they need. I know that if Margaret was ever sat on her own, someone would be across straight away to spend time with her, if that’s what she wanted. It’s a very special place and I only wish other homes would mirror their approach to care giving. What would you say to others about Eothen Homes Wallsend? When I was researching residential care homes there were more than 50 on the North Tyneside website and I must have looked at most of them. I didn’t come across one designed or run like this by Eothen. Eothen Homes Wallsend is a completely unique development that is well worth a visit in order to understand what it has to offer, not to mention the actual scale and quality of the home. If you or someone you love needs a residential care home, I’d definitely recommend taking a look and speaking to the team.

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY …BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.

Property and Affairs

This power enables your attorney to deal with your 46

bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.

Personal Welfare

This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. Call Crichton Wills Trusts & Probate on 01670 514772 and speak to a specialist adviser today who will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have and offers a free no obligation appointment in the comfort of your own home.

HERE COMES THE SUMMER TO

NORTHUMBERLAND LIVE!

The Undertones

The Undertones are back after reforming in 1999 with a new frontman

T

he Undertones have been announced as the first band to play next year’s Northumberland Live series of festivals, including the hugely successful Blyth event. Timeless hits such as ‘Here Comes the Summer’, ‘Jimmy Jimmy’ and “My Perfect Cousin” will be heard across South Beach at Blyth on 24th June 2017 as well as the ground-breaking ‘Teenage Kicks’ which was famously played twice in a row on primetime BBC Radio 1 by DJ John Peel. The Undertones originally released four studio albums and thirteen singles before breaking up in 1983. Now they are back after reforming in 1999 with a new frontman, the flamboyant Paul McLoone who took over from original singer Feargal Sharkey. Recently the band has played at sell out venues and festivals all over Europe but it will be their first ever visit to Blyth. The festival’s tradition of staging bands with well known sing a long songs follows on from last year’s successful appearance of Scouting For Girls at Northumberland Live where approximately 15,000 people turned out to watch the band and enjoy all of the other activities on offer. Chair of Blyth Town Council Events Committee, Councillor Kath Nisbet, is already looking forward to the festival. “Northumberland Live is all about bringing the very best international acts to South East Northumberland; and at the same time giving local performers a chance to star alongside these chart favourites. I’m delighted that this festival helps to put Blyth on the cultural map and encourages tourism and

50

investment. The Undertones are a quality band that appeal to people of all ages and together with a great range of support acts, Northumberland Live at Blyth is guaranteed to be a great free family fun day out.” Organiser of the event, Mel Jackson from Jigsaw Event Management said.” This is a great opportunity for music lovers, families and the people of Northumberland and for those travelling from near and far to attend the festival to have a great free day out in Blyth. As usual, there’ll be something for everyone with a family activities area, superb street theatre, fun fair, wonderful food concessions and of course, great music. “We are delighted to announce that this year’s media partner will be Metro Radio who will add a new dimension to the festival.” If you would like to know more, or be involved in the festival, please get in touch via the Facebook page or email northumberlandlive@gmail.com

LOOK AND FEEL YOUR BEST, NATURALLY A well-being centre in Whitley Bay is celebrating over 20 years of helping the people of North Tyneside look and feel their best, naturally.

T

he Aloe Vera Centre, based in Duchess Street just off Park View, Whitley Bay, has been a fixture in the town centre for over 20 years, a testimony to the quality of their many products treatments and the professional and friendly customer service they offer. Kimberley also specialises in therapeutic and anti – ageing facials, relaxing shoulder, neck and head massages in the tranquil setting of the ‘ The White Room’ where clients relax and allow Kimberley to work ‘her magic’ As a long time sufferer of Crohn’s, Kimberley set up the centre to share her lifestyle changes and knowledge including the benefits of Aloe Vera which helped her immensely. After 2 serious operations she decided she needed to ‘look at her herself and her lifestyle’ Kimberley is now no longer a victim of Crohn’s, she still has the disease but is completely in control. Over

the years she has helped so many of her clients improve their lives by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, allowing them to regain control and to enhance their body and mind. The Aloe Vera Centre has become a big part of the Whitley Bay Coastal community working and giving talks at many local self-help groups, Ladies Association’s and Events. They participate in many local raffles and Charity events donating treatment vouchers and great raffle prizes. They now have a huge following with regular customers coming in for advice, treatments and to purchase some of their life changing products. Kimberley and her husband also set up the Perfect Look and Health range of products to manufacture and import the ‘Perfect Range’ to Trade Outlets as well as to their customer base.
