SAM FENDER TO HEADLINE LOCAL FESTIVAL

T

he 15th annual Mouth of the Tyne Festival takes place this summer, with shows from Thursday 11th to Sunday 14th July in the surroundings of Tynemouth Priory and Castle, and this year features a local North Shields artist as one of the headline acts! North Shields born artist Sam Fender is headlining the main stage on Thursday night. The Brits Award Critics Choice 2019 winner will bring his alternative rock style to Tynemouth to kick off what is likely to be a big summer for the up and coming performer. Friday sees solo acoustic star Jack Savoretti headlining the main stage. The London based artist has 6 studio albums behind him and brings a set list packed with hits. The headline act on Saturday is an 80's legend - Rick Astley! The 'Never Gonna Give You Up' hitmaker has sold over 40 million records worldwide and will be playing a mix of old classics as well as songs from his recently released album 'Beautiful Life'. The Mouth of the Tyne Festival takes place in Tynemouth and is a four day cultural celebration of live music, dance and arts by the sea, attracting around 100,000 people. Live music concerts take place in the grounds of English Heritage property Tynemouth Priory and Castle. Local street food pop-ups trade under festoon lighting whilst festival go-ers gather around shipping bobbins and on reclaimed driftwood seats. There’s a jazz stage outside the Priory next to a welcoming pub overlooking the sea. A free programme of international street theatre provides the entertainment. Hundreds of local children learn new music skills in the weeks leading up to the event and participate in a

10

colourful parade to kick things off. Surf lessons take place a stone’s throw away and cruise ships enter the River Tyne just beyond the headland. There’s an innovative programme of dance and one-off attractions on the platforms of Grade II listed Tynemouth Station, as well as evening concerts at the Playhouse Whitley Bay and Tynemouth’s Surf Café. The festival will also feature a free programme of events including international street entertainment, live jazz music and a children’s pageant. This event does not have camping but there are a number of hotels, hostels and guest houses in the area. Dinosaur Encounter Adventure Golf Dinosaur Encounter is a thrilling 12 hole adventure golf course, complete with roaring and moving dinosaurs, artificial rocks and lush vegetation! All set within a 9,000 square foot site that charmingly recreates the mood of the land that time forgot! Get your putters at the ready and keep your game face on as you sneak past 10 life size dinosaurs who guard the course! The Brachiosaurus and the Spinosaurus are easy to spot, they’re ones who are moving! With tropical plants and palm trees, convincing boulders, and an actual waterfall, this is a great place to take kids whether they like golf or not! And, if you’re tough enough for dinosaurs, you’re tough enough for a bit of drizzle: don’t let the weather put you off! Although they’ll have to close if it gets too treacherous, the course is open in most conditions and the weather rarely affects the quality of the course. If the weather is inclement though, it’s always worth phoning to check if the course is open before you set off. And whenever you go, go early - because a second round on the same day is half price! So if you’re a sore loser in this morning, why not try and get revenge this afternoon?! Clearing the Clutter Clutter can have a major impact on health and wellbeing. Cath Hindle helps people regain space and organise their belongings as a professional declutterer and organiser.

T

his time last year, Cath Hindle was living a very different life. The 44 year from Cullercoats explains “I had a busy job, two small children and not much time for anything else.” A period of stress and anxiety forced her to revaluate and use the considerable skills she’d acquired over the past 20 years in organisational and corporate services to her new business Clear the Clutter. “I used to spend my days delivering change management coaching and support people to move forward and get organised within the business. I still do this but on a much more personal level helping people regain space and organise their belongings as a professional declutterer and organiser.” Cath started Clear the Clutter last July but thanks to the recent Netflix series Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, the concept of decluttering and living with less stuff has really captured people’s interest. Cath says: “I don’t work like Marie Kondo but I do encourage clients to really think if an item creates a positive emotion for them and encourage them to get rid of those that don’t. I also love the way she folds clothes and use that method with clients all the time. “ Cath is a member of the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers and has recently completed training with the Senior Move Partnership specialising in helping older people downsize and move. Her clients range from busy 22

~

families, people who struggle to let things go, small businesses who want clearer workspaces, house movers and anyone looking for support in sorting spaces that have got on top of them. Clutter isn’t often recognised as a source of stress but it can have a major impact on health and wellbeing. As well as overtaking physical space, clutter can overtake the mind as it causes the senses to work overtime to try to process what needs to be

done. This makes it difficult to focus on tasks. It causes frustration when items can’t be located quickly or easily and can make people feel guilty or embarrassed that they are not able to “get organised” or invite friends round because of the mess. Clutter creates anxiety when people feel that they are unable to get on top of it or get to the bottom of the pile. Cath says: “Decluttering and organising is immensely satisfying. Think about how you feel when you’ve had a wardrobe clearout – the sense of satisfaction and pleasure at an organised space and the virtue of being able to hand stuff to a charity shop. I get this everyday working with clients and the feeling grows with each new space we tackle.” One highlight from the past year has been a partnership with St Oswald’s hospice. “Unless the client supports another charity, the stuff I declutter goes to St Oswald’s. Each full charity bag raises, on average, £20 for the hospice, so I’m proud to be working with such a worthy cause. It also means that I operate my business very ethically as I always try to find a good home for things rather than sending it to landfill. Over the next few editions, Cath will be providing decluttering tips and tricks of trade. For more information visit www.clear-the-clutter.co.uk or contact Cath on 07982044 639, email cath@clear-the-clutter.co.uk

WHAT’S HOT Interior Trends For 2019 From bold palettes to decadent fabrics and art deco inspirations, here are the top trends set to transform interiors across the nation, big and small, urban and rural in 2019.

Pantone Colour of the Year Concrete The much-anticipated announcement of Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2019 was recently revealed with Living Coral taking the title. The strong and vibrant colour is described as “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone” that effuses warmth and stimulates positivity. It pays homage to the nourishing impact of coral on sea life and sets to remind us of our own impacts on the environment around us. While the introduction of Living Coral in the home can be as simple as adding cushions to a create a playful, expressive space, it can also be taken further such as the inclusion of the Villeroy & Boch Artis washbasin in a Living Coral shade. For the living room the Aragon sofa by Arlo & Jacob is the perfect addition to the space and creates a central focal point at the same time as boosting your mood.

Velvet

This luxurious, seductive material is the most searched for fabric by consumers and this shows no sign of slowing down in the new year. Its ability to add depth to colours and versatility between rooms only enhances its popularity. While in the past it may have been seen as old fashioned, velvet now has a new identity that is being celebrated in the design sector. Whether it is a blush sofa or deep purple cushions, bringing velvet into the home instantly transforms a room and the pieces are a true design statement.

Art Deco

Jewel tones, large scale designs and scalloped accessories will define spaces within the home in the new year. The use of bold patterned wallpaper creates an opulent vibe and a little can go a long way in a small space such as a hallway or cloakroom and offer a welcome break from muted minimalism. This stylish scalloped mirror woud look perfect in a hallway and the deco inspired Toledo Bedside Drawers lovingly made from acacia wood with attractive brass cladding and a brass finish to the legs and handles adds a touch of 1920’s glamour to your bedroom.

While it has long been a practical material to build property, concrete is now being used throughout the home, inside and out, to create an industrial, architectural feel. From furniture and lighting to kitchenware and plant pots, the brutalist style of concrete is taking over every room in the home, bringing new textural finishes to unexpected places. The wonder of concrete is its ability to mix seamlessly with other materials including wood, marble, copper and brass, all of which can bring warmth to what can easily become a cold style. Unsure about committing to a large piece such as a concrete worktop in the kitchen? Begin with smaller items such as a hanging shelf or candle holder and gradually build up to a more daring, permanent feature.

Brass Taps

Not simply a practical necessity in the bathroom and kitchen, taps are the finishing touch to the space. The addition of brass taps can help to soften a room with large concrete features such as a butler sink or island. However, brass can also add a touch of timeless design to a contemporary technology focused bathroom. The statement feature pairs extremely well with dark colourways as well strong materials and is guaranteed to have your guests in awe of your design expertise. Cooke & Lewis Brass

GROW YOUR OWN

With the increased interest in self sufficiency and organic produce, it’s a great time to try growing your own fruit and veg at home. Here’s some tips on how to start from PlantsPlus Garden Centre...

W

e’ve said if before and we’re going to say it again growing fruit and veg is IN! No longer associated with those in the countryside or those who are naturally green fingered, GLEE 2018 (Garden, Leisure & Equipment Exhibition) referenced a study that revealed 43% of gardeners under 40 grow their own vegetables compared to 32% of over 60s. The benefits far surpass just having food on the table: You can keep it organic; it’s not space dependant; it’s healthy, both the physical nature of the task and the freshest nutrients you could put in your body; it’s educational and fun for all ages.

SIZE DOESN’T MATTER Urban gardeners are bringing grow-your-own into the 21st century which means there are plenty of creative ways to plant and harvest them, even if you have limited space. So forget about thinking that you need a large patch of ground in a garden or an allotment, you can get started now even if you live in a small apartment.

START WITH HERBS If you‘re having your first thoughts about dabbling in grow-your-own but are daunted about where to start, begin with herbs. They’ll be perfectly happy by your kitchen

window and if you look after them well instead of treating them as disposable, they will keep rewarding you for months to come - trimming them will actually encourage more growth. Whilst they may look tropical with their bright and sculptural fruit, chilli plants can thrive on sunny window sills too!

DO A SWAP Swap the flowers in your patio planters or window boxes for vegetables. Grow all of your salad greens in one container such as lettuce, spring onions rocket and spinach. Planted away from the ground you’ll have less problems with pests such as slugs and snails, and if they’re on a balcony you’ll definitely not catch any rabbits or deer having a nibble of them! Although great for restricted spaces, just be aware that smaller containers will need more watering. If you want to make things even easier, there are ranges of self watering systems on the market such as easy drip systems that you can place in your pots to relieve the fear of over or under watering your crops.

JUST DO IT! We’ve saved our best tip for last and it’s a tried and tested one that works for most people… buy some seeds or some starter veg and just have the confidence to put them in the ground and give grow-your-own a shot. Like everything else, practice makes perfect and when you finally pick that first juicy, red tomato from your window planter and taste how much more flavoursome they are compared to the supermarkets, you’ll be hooked! Nothing will beat being able to plate up the rewards of your own hard work.

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY …before it's too late

L

asting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.

Property and Affairs

This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.

Personal Welfare

This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. Call Crichton Wills Trusts & Probate on 01670 514 772 and speak to a specialist adviser today who will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have and offers a free no obligation appointment in the comfort of your own home.

ENJOYING INDEPENDENT LIFE with Eothen Homes

In 2016 Eothen Homes, opened a brand new, purpose-built residential home in Wallsend for people living with dementia. On the site are eight apartments available to rent, which have been specifically designed for the over 75s. Here residents Doreen and Denton Gunn, both 83, tell us why it’s a lovely place to live.

E

othen Homes Wallsend has secured a reputation as a groundbreaking dementia facility, ideal for those who wish to live independently within a safe and secure environment. Why did you choose Wallsend and why Eothen Homes particularly? We were both living in another home not far from Wallsend and heard about Eothen Homes through Denton’s niece, who decided it was the perfect place for her Mum (his sister) to stay. Denton has Alzheimer’s and we knew a time would come when we’d need additional help. While we live independently, we are now in the perfect place to source that, as needed. As for Eothen Homes, it had a nice feel and although we didn’t choose it for its Christian ethos, it’s nice to be somewhere where the team really cares about the residents, which is clear from the start. What’s good about the design of the home and in particular your flat? The design of Eothen Homes, Wallsend is lovely. There are landscaped gardens we can enjoy and anyone living in the flats has the use of a private lift to take us up to the second floor. There is a roof top area, which will be nice when the weather is better, a cafe and also an atrium with birds, which we enjoy. Cleaning services, laundry and meals are available at a cost but we don’t use those facilities at the moment as we

38 38

like to go out and do our own shopping and cleaning. There are lots of buses we can catch nearby when we want to have a day out locally. We love our flat. We can spend our time together, it’s really calm and cosy and we have decorated it to our own taste. The kitchen is twice the size of the one we had before, the bathroom is roomy and the bedroom is spacious too. It has everything we need really. We’re both looking forward to our daughter visiting from Australia next year so we can show it off to her. Tell us about the team at Eothen The team here are very kind and go out of the way to ensure we are ok. We also get invited to meetings downstairs where we can learn about any activities taking place and give ideas about what we’d like to do. We like to walk at Richardson Dees Park, which is just over the road but if we want to do something different, everyone does whatever they can to make it happen. It’s a very nice place to live. About Eothen Homes, Wallsend Rents at Eothen Homes Wallsend start at £600 per month, inclusive of maintenance charge, gas, electricity and water but excluding council tax and telephone. Amtico Oslo

Find Your Perfect

FLOORING

Looking for the perfect flooring solution for your home? Local flooring experts, Michael Metcalf Carpets explain the benefits of both Luxury Vinyl Tiles and carpet...

40

I

n recent decades, the domestic flooring trade has seen the market flooded with Luxury Vinyl Tile products (LVT). The most popular, trusted, and well known of these being produced by two companies, namely Amtico and Karndean. There has long been an interest in alternatives to carpet, particularly in areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, and entrance hallways from both a practical and an aesthetic point of view. There was a period of time when many people had their original floorboards sanded flat and varnished to produce a natural ambience to their surroundings. This however was found to reduce the warmth and thermal efficiency of their homes and to increase heating bills. Then laminate was introduced which solved this problem, later being replaced with real wood plank installations, and after that, engineered wood.

LOCAL ADVERTISING FEATURE

}

Combine the look and feel of wood or stone in combination with the practical benefits of vinyl flooring: warm, durable and sound absorbent.

~

Certainly over the last twenty years however, the trend and fashion is lending toward LVT. The advantage of this product which is made of tough vinyl is that it can be produced with a massive range of designs and colours to complement anyone's particular chosen style, furniture, or installed kitchen or bathroom. This can be selected either during the process of interior design, or indeed following a decoration or new kitchen due to the vast array of choice and availability. It was popular up until recently to have these tiles arranged with borders around the perimeter though most installations now are without borders. Luxury vinyl tiles mainly are available in three different configurations, namely to resemble either wooden floorboards, slate, or ceramic tiles. As ceramic tiles too seem to be fading out of fashion to a degree, most present day installations of LVT are in the floorboard format. The quality of the tiles themselves is determined to a large degree by the thickness of the tough clear vinyl wear layer which covers the coloured layer underneath, and usually a minimum of a 0.50mm wear layer is considered preferable. Amtico is manufactured in the UK and is generally considered to be the toughest and the best choice of vinyl tile. Karndean do not actually manufacture, but as with most other suppliers of these products, source them from the far east. This however does not mean that they are not excellent products, because the manufacturing process is highly regulated due to the market being mainly in the UK and Europe. What is not usually readily understood by the consumer though, is the absolute importance of the installation process. All Amtico and Karndean products are of a superb standard, and to complement this, both companies insist on strict procedures when it comes to having them fitted in one's home so that they will last for many, many years. Installations often fail due to the trade guidelines being ignored, and incorrect or inferior materials being used under the tiles during the sub floor preparation process. Your local experts Michael Metcalf Carpets have over 20 years of experience in the installation of Amtico and Karndean. They offer a complete, personal, and free onsite survey and estimate where advice can be supplied and any questions answered. Their installer works to the highest standard possible, and achieves 100% successful customer satisfaction. In addition to Amtico and Karndean, the showroom at 69 Bridge Street Morpeth, also displays LVT from Distinctive Flooring, another top class company with a beautiful range of modern tile and plank. In all, around 400 variations of colour and design are on display in your local Morpeth high street studio.

Cormar Gemini Carpet

WHY CARPET IS STILL KING While the above products presently reign supreme in kitchen, hallway, bathrooms and toilets, only a few families choose to cover the entire ground floor of their home with vinyl tiles, and almost everyone prefers carpet in the bedrooms. So why is carpet such a dominant floorcovering in the UK? The main consideration is insulation. Carpet with a good quality underlay cannot be beaten when it comes to comfort and warmth, providing a great choice for any home, and they also reduce noise levels. Studies reveal that older people are over three times more likely to suffer a fracture when falling on vinyl floors than if they landed on a carpeted area. Carpet, especially with a good quality polyurethane high density underlay has been shown to help cushion a fall and minimise injuries. It is also for the same reasons, child friendly. A significant point to note is that wool is naturally flame resistant due to its unique chemical structure which has a high nitrogen and moisture content, and this is one reason why wool carpets are used on cruise ships and in major hotels. Additionally there has recently been a huge growth in demand for soft, silky, deep pile carpets, and they have become a firm favourite with homeowners. These carpets are even more akin to cushion a fall. Carpet companies have responded to demand in the market for softness underfoot at an affordable price by launching various ranges that can be found at Michael Metcalf Carpets by the manufacturers Cormar, Cavalier, and Associated Weavers. BOOST YOUR METABOLISM Sarah Howe is a Fitness trainer for women, Director of 3 Curves fitness facility’s in the North East, and a mother of two. Here she gives the low-down on getting the best out of your metabolism.

Y

ou usually hear people blaming their weight gain on a slow metabolism. They’ve cut down on calories and they are walking more or exercising more (usually aerobic classes, “walking the dog” or running). So lets talk about what your metabolism actually is. It’s not an organ like your liver or kidneys. Your metabolism is necessary to maintain life. It is the organic & chemical process inside your organisms (or how quickly your body can burn calories & fat which allows you to stay alive). Your metabolism takes all the calories from the food and drink that you consume, mixes it with oxygen and releases energy into the body for your body to function i.e. breathing, repairing cells and digesting. Some people have a faster metabolism which means their body can burn energy from food at a faster rate. This also depends on body size, age and gender. Muscle cells require more energy to maintain than fat cells, therefore the more muscle you have the more calories your body burns. As you age and you lose muscle, your body replaces it with body fat which is why your metabolism slows down (unless you strength train and replace the muscle loss). Men tend to have more muscle than women which explains why men have a faster metabolism and can eat more calories than women. The last two items on the lista bove are probably the most important. Doing a HITT workout will help burn more fat & therefore increasing your metabolic rate even after you workout. As mentioned earlier, muscle is more metabolically active so by strength training you will gain muscle mass, reduce body fat and increase your metabolism. Plus your body will burn more calories at rest.

44

TOP 10 METABOLISM BOOSTERS 1. Eat protein with each meal 2. Stand up more 3. Drink green tea 4. Add spices to your food 5. Drink plenty of cold water 6. Get a good nights sleep 7. Drink coffee 8. Use coconut oil instead of cooking fat 9. High intensity workout 10. Strength training

People who do diets and only do walking, running, aerobic classes, treadmills, bikes etc. will lose muscle mass therefore lowering metabolism. A lot of people who starve themselves on lower calories, under eat or do diets they are depriving their bodies. Take a look at this - on a daily basis this is how much of the energy/calories your body

uses to function, Your brain 20%, your beating heart all the time accounts for 15-20%, the liver another 15-20% as well as kidneys, lungs and other tissues etc. The only other thing remaining is your muscle which is 25% of your resting metabolism. So, stop cutting down on calories, do strength training (each new pound of muscle increases your metabolism) aerobic exercise can not offer this alone! At Curves we offer a safe environment for women of all ages, shapes & sizes to combine strength training & cardio in a HITT style. 30 minutes at Curves burns up to 500 calories compared to 30 minutes on a treadmill burns 216 calories approx or 30 minutes on a rowing machine 189 calories approx. Just imagine only having to do 30 minutes at Curves and being able to eat properly and not have to deprive yourself battling against your weight?
