FESTIVE FEAST Christmas is a time for family and friends to indulge in delicious food and winter tipples. With this in mind, here are four of the best local venues to help you celebrate the festive season in style.

THE HASTINGS

The Hastings is a community pub steeped in tradition. Built over 175 years ago, it was purpose built as a public house, and has served that function ever since. Current owners Peter and Paul Thompson have run the pub for the last 5 years, and the Hastings has gone from strength to strength during this time. They have been nominated for, and won, a number of awards, both local and national, and they have an excellent reputation for both their food and their choice of real ales. They pride themselves on using fresh and where possible locally sourced ingredients throughout their dishes. A good honest local pub, serving good honest local food is how they describe themselves, although this may be selling themselves a little bit short, as their food elevates the Hastings to more than the usual local pub. With a good selection of wines and malt whiskies, alongside branded 'house' spirits and an extensive premium spirit range, they believe there is a satisfying drink for everyone. Proudly Supporting North East Creatives Enterprising couple build upon the success of their Whitley Bay business

J

ust 12 months after opening their Whitley Bay shop Paul and Lucy Hull, owners of For the Love of the North are celebrating success by opening their second shop.

Alongside their website, For the Love of the North had been solely based on Whitley Road in Whitley Bay selling a range of high quality cards, prints and gifts all sourced from North-East artists and creatives. Paul and Lucy also have gallery space which up until 22nd Sep is housing an exhibition of Whitley Bay artist Darren Mundy’s work. They sell tickets, provide advice to visitors and keep a rolling collection of flyers and brochures detailing what’s going on in the local area. However, the enterprising couple who 20

now employ 5 staff, launched their second shop within Stack in Newcastle City Centre in August. Stack is situated on the site of the old Odeon Cinema in Pilgrim Street and is the city’s very first leisure and shopping destination using shipping containers. Paul was nominated as one of 10 finalists in the Tourism Superstar awards run by a national newspaper and VisitEngland has unrivalled knowledge about the North-East. He said, “I’ve always known we have such amazing, independent artists and craftspeople here in our region that often go unnoticed and we are delighted to be able to provide them with a retail platform in both our Whitley Bay and Newcastle stores.” Lucy said “We are hugely passionate about the North-East and having a

NORTH EAST WATCH BRAND CELEBRATES BEST OF THE REGION WITH NEW MODEL

A

new luxury watch brand based in North Shields has launched its first model, inspired by the North East’s rich academic and industrial heritage.

Northwind is the brainchild of Gateshead-born businessman Lee Smith, a watch-aficionado who wanted to create a watch brand that represents the best of the North. After years of running a specialist watch business importing exclusive brands from Russia, USA, Switzerland and Germany Lee spotted a gap in the market for something that celebrated his own region. Lee comments: “I found it fascinating that lots of countries and cultures tell their stories through their timepieces. “After importing watches like the Sturmanskie Gagarin (worn by the first man in space) or the Vostok Komandirskie (issued to Russian Servicemen and Women), I thought that I could do something that would show off the North East to the rest of the world.” Geordie Shore has shown people how we party in the North but Lee wanted to show another side. He turned to the historical heritage of the North East’s people and landscape when creating Northwind. “The world already knows that we play hard. I wanted to show the other side, what we’ve achieved through our hard work. I want to pay homage to the people that were at the forefront of industry, invention and academic Northwind is the brainchild of Gateshead-born businessman Lee Smith

study instead of the populist view of a hedonistic North East. “From the first train and first electric light bulb to the Venerable Bede or the scholarly monks of Lindisfarne - industry, innovation and the constant pursuit of knowledge have defined this area. I want Northwind to illustrate that and be a brand for North East men who align themselves with these values.” Northwind’s first limited edition piece, the Armstrong Automatic, is inspired by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist William Armstrong. Shieldfield born Armstrong was a hugely influential businessmen whose other achievements included founding Newcastle University, donating land now recognised as Jesmond Dene to the public, and building Cragside, the world’s first house to be lit by hydroelectricity. Lee's watch design references the North’s industrial heritage with a heavy

duty and rugged aesthetic - powered by a mechanical movement. The stainless steel is complimented by a leather strap and carry case - suggestive of the role the beautiful and harsh landscape has played in the North’s history. Lee adds: “We’re less than two months in and we’ve already had keen interest from local retailers. We’re stocked in Union Clothing in Newcastle city centre and Hamiedog Menswear in Whitley Bay, as well as on some locally ran websites.” “I’m a proud northerner and I hope that my brand brings something to the creative tapestry of this region. Something that people can wear, be proud of and enjoy.” For more information and to purchase the Armstrong visit www.northwindwatches.com For trade enquiries contact sales@northwindwatches.com

PECAN PIE Golden pastry, a nutty filling that has a passing resemblance to crunchy autumn leaves, and those moreish caramel-toffee flavours make pecan pie a go-to autumn dessert.

INGREDIENTS

For the pastry

225g plain flour 100g unsalted butter Pinch of salt

For the filling

3 medium eggs 100g granulated sugar 100g packed dark brown sugar 160g maple syrup 45g melted unsalted butter 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 teaspoon fine sea salt 225g roasted hazelnuts, with skins rubbed off 125g pecan halves, roasted 70g pecans, ground 28

3. 4. 5. 6.

Sift your flour and salt into a bowl. Cut the butter into cubes and add to the flour. Use your fingertips to rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Gradually add 2-3 tbsp water and mix until it starts forming a firm dough. On a lightly floured surface, turn out the dough and give it a quick and light knead. Wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for at least 15 minutes. The pastry can be left in the fridge for up to 2 days or frozen until ready to use. Just make sure it has plenty of time to defrost before use.

Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/ Gas mark 6. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to about 3mm (1/8 inch) thick and 3cm (1 inch) larger than the pie dish. Chill the pastry in the fridge for 20 minutes, then remove and prick the bottom of the pastry with a fork before blind-baking it for 16-20 minutes, until the edges are golden. Remove from the oven and leave to cool. Meanwhile, whisk the eggs in a large bowl and add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, butter, vanilla and sea salt. Blend until smooth. Roughly chop half the hazelnuts and add these along with the pecans to the mixture. Pour this mixture into the quiche dish. Place the pie back in the oven for 30 minutes until the filling is cooked. It should have a little wobble in the centre when shaken. Serve with a dollop of whipped cream.

Luxury Cuddle Rooms are designed in the style of standard living rooms to make dogs feel at home during rest and relaxation time. The Centre boasts half an acre of enclosed private land including agility zones, training areas, sandpits, pools and even a parkour area for trick training games. Other activities include 30

NORDIC CHRISTMAS

One of the biggest interior trends gives a rustic, yet contemporary feel to your holiday decor.

W

e will see Nordic style continue to have a strong influence on Christmas decorating in 2018, but a more pared back palette of soft neutrals with lots of blonde wood, heavy textures and pops of metallic will be the backbone of the look this year. Where before we may have seen whimsical Fair Isle-style knits and

34

fussy ornaments making their way into this trend, 2018's Nordic Christmas will offer a more refined take on the look, with quality materials and clean lines taking centre stage. Watch out for muted tones of pink and glints of coppery rust, both of which may become trendy festive colours in their own right this year. Expect to see wooden baubles,

simple traditional ornaments and twinkling star-shaped string lighting as we head towards winter. While Nordic style for this festive season is less playful than previous years, it is no less delightful - it's a relaxed, calming look that embraces Scandinavian shapes, muted tones and tactile, natural elements for a warm and cosy yet completely sophisticated vibe.

SUNDAY LUNCH

WITH A VIEW

Burgham Park Golf Club offers fresh and tasty Sunday lunches with a fantastic view. Richard Wilson headed up the A1 to give them a try...

Enjoy the view of the golf course while you dine

O

nce in a while it’s nice to go for a drive on a sunny Sunday lunchtime, and let someone else worry about cooking and those dreaded dishes created by a Sunday Lunch. That is exactly what we decided to do, and we chose Burgham Park Golf Club as our destination.

Located conveniently just off the A1 (and well signposted) about 10 miles north of Morpeth, Burgham Park is set in beautiful tranquil countryside, a perfect location for a relaxing Sunday Lunch. The clubhouse has a bar and conservatory area on the ground floor, whilst the restaurant is situated on the first floor. The room makes full use of the magnificent views on offer, with floor to ceiling windows allowing dinners the chance to gaze out over the 18th hole and the fields that stretch beyond whilst enjoying their lunch. The room itself is beautifully laid out with a large open fire and a really warm and welcoming atmosphere. The Sunday Lunch menu is kept purposely simple to ensure everything is served fresh. There are three starter options, two choices of main course and three desserts. For our starter we chose the traditional prawn cocktail. Nicely 38

presented and a very pleasing appetiser for the main course. The chef cooks a choice of two different meats every week, rotating the selections, and the offerings when we visited were beef and pork. Both myself and my wife opted for the beef and when it came neither of us were disappointed with our choice! The slices of beef were coated in a delicious thick gravy and accompanied by both roast and mashed potato and a gigantic Yorkshire pudding. Vegetables are served separately, and our helping consisted of turnip, carrots and Brussels sprouts with delicious pancetta. The dish was warm, hearty and tasted very much home cooked in the best traditional sense. The portions are very generous and all in all the meal left us both very satisfied. Stepping outside into the earlyafternoon sun, we pondered as to whether a stroll in the beautifully grounds was in order, but this review wasn’t going to write itself, so we settled for the scenic drive back. If you are looking for a nice drive on a Sunday lunchtime and a traditional

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY …BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.

Property and Affairs

This power enables your attorney to deal with your 40

bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.

Personal Welfare

This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. Call Crichton Wills Trusts & Probate on 01670 514772 and speak to a specialist adviser today who will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have and offers a free no obligation appointment in the comfort of your own home.

WOOL OR MAN-MADE? WHICH IS THE BEST CARPET FOR YOU?

M

ichael Metcalf Carpets pride themselves on being honest and transparent. With decades of experience within the carpet trade they are able to offer the most reliable advice to accompany their first class service. One of the most frequent questions they are asked by their customers is “which is best, a traditional wool carpet or one manufactured from man-made fibre?” Here is their explanation...

42 42

A wool carpet keeps its appearance wonderfully

LOCAL ADVERTISING FEATURE

WOOL

Wool is without question the best material for the manufacturing of carpets. It is natural, sustainable, has superb insulating properties, dyes easily, and keeps its appearance wonderfully. For many years it has been recognised that the inclusion of a small proportion of nylon into the wool yarn prior to the manufacturing process gives the wool a stronger property. For this reason it has become standard practice to create the finest carpets with a blend of eighty percent wool and twenty percent nylon, commonly referred to as an 80/20 mix. Quality carpets are generally graded in terms of weight. We find carpets described as 40 ounce, 50 ounce, 60 ounce and so on. This is a description or a general indication of the amount of wool/nylon content in weight per square yard. However, sometimes a 50 oz carpet may be more durable than a 60 oz from a different manufacturer. The reason for this is because the 60 oz may have a longer pile than the 50 oz and therefore more weight, while the 50 oz could have a shorter pile length but may be of a much tighter construction than the 60 oz. We advise our customers to look for and feel for a density in carpets rather than simply relying on weight descriptions. Therefore, we believe it is the density of the pile, or the amount of tufts per square inch (to use an old imperial term) that will deter the breaking or distortion of carpet pile, and help retain the appearance of your new quality carpet. We can supply all of the major reputable and established carpet brands, most of which we have on display in our Morpeth showroom.

POLYPROPELENE

Polypropelene is the next best ideal product for carpet manufacturing, and has in fact several distinct advantages over wool, the first of which is the fact that an equivalent carpet of this construction will be around half of the price as a wool one. The other fantastic quality of polypropelene is that it can be cleaned usually very successfully if and when it is subject to soiling or spillage. Therefore many families with small children and pets prefer this material because certain stains cannot be cleaned so easily from a wool carpet. Interestingly, in recent decades in the UK it has become common practice in many homes to remove ones shoes before walking onto carpets, which is probably the most single factor that we can advise toward prolonging the appearance of your new carpet. Outdoor shoes will carry grit as well as dust and water from outside, so making it a practice to take off your shoes when coming through the front door is a great idea. The cleanability of polypropylene carpets is not a new thing, though at first this fibre was tough and hard to the touch. Then in 2015 the carpet manufacturer Associated Weavers introduced the Invictus range of carpet. It was so soft to the touch that it took the industry by storm, and during the next two years or so commanded a great deal of the UK residential carpet market. So successful was this, that long established carpet manufactures scrambled to copy this product, employing laboratory plastics experts to try and find out how a polypropylene fibre could possibly be manufactured in such a soft and silk like format. This really was a great step in carpet manufacturing. Now only a few years on there are several brands available with similar super soft carpet pile. This carpet feels amazing if you walk bare foot in your home and is the number one choice for bedrooms in particular, though is also suitable for sitting rooms and hall stairs and landings. Please come and browse our showroom at your leisure.

SAYING THANK YOU TO WOMEN OF THE WAR 2018 marks 100 years since the end of the First World War and to commemorate this historic year, The Royal British Legion is leading the nation in saying Thank You to the First World War generation who served, sacrificed and changed our world.

W

hilst most of the soldiers on the frontline were men, The Royal British Legion has produced a very special brooch to say Thank You for the massive contribution made by women in the war, and to those women who continue to be such an integral part of the Armed Forces family today.

Women not only played a huge role in directly helping the war effort, from being nurses in field hospitals to working in dangerous munitions factories, but the war also helped change women’s place in society and demonstrated that they were the physical and intellectual equal of men. Edwardian women were expected to be mothers, carers and homemakers. But with men leaving to fight in the war, women had to take on the jobs of those who were serving. From 1914, millions took on jobs traditionally held More than 1.5 million women flooded into these industries and others to replace men away at the front. In 1914 just over 2 million worked in factories and by the end of the war it was nearly 3 million. For the first time, large numbers of women worked in the civil service, business, banks, shops, transport and farming. Many women who had been 46

in solitary occupations prior to the war, such as domestic service, revelled in the “sisterhood” of larger groups. Although when the war was over many women were forced to quit industrial jobs to make way for returning men, their role in the war had fundamentally changed how society regarded them and in 1918 around 8.5 million women first got the vote, following the actions of the suffragette movement. The Women of the War brooch is a stunning piece of jewellery. Plated with a gold tone and hand finished with brilliant baguette crystals, the poppy brooches are dedicated to the memory of the courageous women who served and lost their lives as a direct result of the First World War, whose names are recognised by CWGC as women serving in the auxiliary units during the First World War. Each brooch comes with a certificate commemorating the life of one of these brave women and also acts as a way of saying thank you to all the women, who often have untold stories, who ultimately went on to change society and women’s place within it. With all profits raised from the sale of the brooches going directly to the Legion and their important work, they also help support the British Armed Forces family today. The Women of the First World War brooch is available from The Royal British Legion’s official online shop www.poppyshop.org.uk for £29.99
