KEY SPRING INTERIOR TRENDS Velvet sofas, brass and botanicals. Here are the key current trends to bring into your home this spring.

All items Furniture Village 14

INTERIORS

maximalism

Although this may seem a tricky trend to get right, in some ways you can’t really go wrong with a more-is-more approach: layer up cushions and throws in clashing patterns and contrasting colours, add some bold, bright glassware and throw in a statement rug (an accessory that is definitely having a moment), and you’re pretty much there. As a sideline to this trend, bold, patterned wallpaper - on all four walls - is also being revived in a big way.

botanicals

Botanicals continue to be top of the hit list for freshening up our homes - searches for pictures of house plants spiked towards the end of last year, as did queries on how to keep them alive. Leafy palms, fiddleleaf figs and hardy succulents are among the low-maintenance options that are proving particularly popular. We’re also searching for botanical motifs on fabrics and wallpapers, but of the subtle, traditional variety, rather than the tropical designs that have been splashed all over cushions of late.

green

Green is the colour of choice - not just the light, bright green of new leaves that was Greenery, Pantone’s colour of the year for 2017, but darker forest tones, strong jades and pale minty shades. Calke Green is one of Farrow & Ball’s key colours for 2018, which it describes as “a rich sage with a dark, masculine feel” - and, incidentally, the brand’s colour consultant, Joa Studholme, suggests pairing it with Pitch Blue, a cross between cobalt and cornflower, for an “intense yet perfectly balanced combination that is filled with fun and optimism”.

Flatweave Rug, £10, JD Williams

brass

Brass is becoming the metal of choice as we move on from copper and rose gold, particularly when teamed with marble in kitchens and bathrooms. Some are predicting a return to polished chrome this year, but for now we’re sticking with warm metallic tones and matt, brushed finishes.

The velvet sofa is a trend that is showing no sign of stopping, just make sure you're bold with your colour choice.

PEACHY: The 5A range from Dorma at Dunelm

pastels

Not just blush pink, but also peach and lilac - are widely thought to be the hot colours for this year, especially on walls, where they could potentially take over from grey. Bathrooms are also getting in on the act, with companies introducing bathroom suites in powdery hues. A touch of black or charcoal grey will neutralise the sugariness pastels bring, and mixing in accents of richer tones such as terracotta will help keep the look current. Look out for salmon pink and sage green, a colour combination that is appearing everywhere.

boho

A slightly toned-down version of this is the boho look, which has made a comeback from its noughties heyday, albeit in a more modern, sophisticated iteration. Texture is key to this look, in the form of woven fabrics, rattan furniture and cushions embellished with appliqué and fringing. Layer up rugs in muted tones with embroidered floor cushions and poufs to add instant interest and warmth.

W

ould you like to spend the summer working on some of Tyne and Wear’s most popular beaches? The RNLI is searching for new recruits and has opened applications for beach lifeguards and face-to-face fundraisers.

Both roles are essential in reducing the number of people who drown on the North East coast, and keep people safe by providing safety advice to holidaymakers. Successful applicants receive first-class training in search and rescue, lifesaving and casualty care techniques. Ben Mitchell, RNLI area lifesaving manager, said: “Working as a lifeguard has got to be one of the best summer jobs - you get to call the beach your office for a start. But, far more importantly than that, you are there to make sure the public enjoy it in the safest possible way. The RNLI provides local summer patrols at Sandhaven, Whitley Bay North and South, Cullercoats, Tynemouth Longsands and King Edward’s Bay amongst other local beaches. Ben said the role is demanding and will require commitment, skill and a clear head. He added: “We’re looking for people with courage, determination and the ability to draw on their training and make the right decision if someone’s life is in danger. It is an incredibly rewarding role.” Face-to-face fundraisers will work alongside lifeguards to provide beach visitors with important safety advice. They will play a vital role in saving lives by educating the public on risks at the coast. Applicants need to be dynamic and act as a positive ambassador - encouraging support for this lifesaving charity is just one of the things the fundraisers will do over the summer. Callum Moffat, RNLI face-to-face fundraising manager, said: “A good fundraiser generally has to be friendly and relaxed, but also energetic, able to talk to anyone and be passionate about what they do. We provide quality training which ensures new fundraisers feel confident and capable in the role.” To apply for one of the roles visit summerjobs.rnli.org or search for #BestSummerJob on Facebook and Twitter.

PURE SHORES: Writer Mark Twain once said ‘Mauritius was made first and then heaven, heaven being copied after Mauritius’

Magical Mauritius Hays personal travel consultant, Brittany Harrison (pictured left), is passionate about travel and enjoys passing on her recommendations to potential customers. Here she shares her own experience of a visit to the beautiful island nation of Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean. 22

M

auritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, best known for its beautiful powder white beaches, turquoise waters and luxury resorts.

Whether you like to chill out on the beach or take on a more active holiday, there is something for everyone in Mauritius. Over 100,000 British tourists visit the island every year. If you are a citizen of the EU, USA, Australia, Canada and a number of other countries you won’t need a visa, initial entry is granted for 3 months. There is only one airport on the island, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. You can fly direct from London Heathrow with Air Mauritius or British Airways. Connecting flights from regional airports are also available. A direct flight from London Heathrow takes approximately 12 hours. Mauritius is a year round destination, ideal for winter sun, and this is considered the best time to go weather wise. High season is between December – February, with average temperatures between 25c and 33c but there is a slight risk of cyclones at this time. December is also the best month for snorkelling and diving. May – September is low season, with cooler average temperatures between 18c and 25c. There are many different attractions and tours that you can do on the island. Many tour operators offer full day trips that cover various attractions in one day. My favourite tour was Dodo’s trail, this was around 10 hours included a visit to the capital Port Louis and the central market. On the way there we stopped off at Fort Adelaide and enjoyed magnificent views over the town and harbour. After Port Louis we went to a local restaurant, Escale Creole – Table d’Hotes for an authentic Mauritian lunch. The hosts were amazing and it really felt like we were at a family meal, we were presented with Mauritian specialities such as Creole sausages, chicken

curry and fricasseed cabbage, all served with a local flavoured rum. We then headed to the Blue Penny Museum and Caudan Waterfront – a modern shopping centre. I also went on a full day scenic tour, the Wild South West. Another long day but a great experience we visited Chamarel Waterfall, 7-Coloured Earth, La Rhumerie de Chamarel, Grand Bassin, Trou aux Cerfs and a ship model factory. The highlight for me was La Rhumerie de Chamarel, it was really interesting to find out how the local rum is made and also sample the different flavours. If you are into hiking, then Black River Gorges National Park is for you! It is recommended you go with a local guide as it is easy to get lost. Mauritius is often a go to destination for weddings and honeymoons, but don’t let that put you off. This is also a great destination for families. With plenty of history, culture and attractions on offer, it is not just for those who want to relax in the sun all day. Writer Mark Twain once said ‘Mauritius was made first and then heaven, heaven being copied after Mauritius’ I have no hesitation in recommending Mauritius, and we have all year round deals and offers available. As your Hays personal travel consultant you only need to deal with me direct, so rest assured I'll be at the end of the phone or email for any assistance you may need. Booking the perfect holiday for the you is my highest priority, from a weekend away to a dream wedding abroad, I aim to make the whole experience first class. Being part of the UK's largest independent travel company makes me extremely competitive on price, and you'll also have peace of mind that your holiday is financially protected. To book your next holiday call Brittany Harrison on 0191 4329548. Email: brittany.harrison@hays-travel.co.uk www.haystravel.co.uk/brittany-harrison

HEALTH

LOOKING AFTER YOUR EYES Our sight is so precious, here Kevin Gray of Robert Green and Partners gives advice on looking after your eyes

T

he best way to check on the health of your eyes is a regular sight test with an optometrist who can often pick up some eye problems before they cause significant damage to your sight. Some eye problems such as glaucoma will

not cause symptoms for a long time and early detection, as with most things, makes treatment easier and more effective. Patients I see often ask for advice on maintaining eye health, in particular, with regard to diet. Clearly a healthy diet is beneficial to everyone, but there are some specific foods that can be valuable for eyes. Green leafy vegetables such as kale or spinach are high in micro-nutrients which may delay the onset of age-related macula degeneration (AMD) and cataract, and oily fish, fruit and nuts are good too. Supplements, whilst no substitute for a healthy diet might be appropriate in some individuals. Being overweight, whilst not directly affecting eyesight, substantially increases the risks of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and stroke, all of which pose significant risk of damaging your eyes. Many people don’t realise that smoking doubles the risk of developing AMD, and increases the risk of cataract too, so quitting is important. UVA and UVB in sunlight is harmful to eyes, especially with regard to cataract, and may well be a factor in other eye conditions including AMD. Good quality sunglasses carrying the CE marking will offer protection, especially for people who work outdoors or who have outdoor leisure pursuits, and particularly abroad, at high altitude, or where 24

there is reflected light from snow, the beach or on water. Many regular prescription spectacles can have UV protection built in to them and most prescriptions can be made up as sunglasses. Also, many contact lens brands include UV filters. In addition patients who have had cataract surgery might also benefit from extra protection from harmful rays. Your optometrist can offer specific advice on all of these. Eye injuries at work, in the garden and from DIY are a regular presentation at casualty departments, as are sports related injuries. Wearing appropriate protective spectacles or goggles whilst carrying out these activities is essential. The more dangerous sports for eyes are squash, badminton, tennis and cricket, and sports safety goggles, including prescriptions, are widely available and are highly recommended. Oh yes, and be careful when opening the bubbly too! If you haven’t had an eye examination then booking one is easy. You can find a local optometrist on the NHS choices website, and ask friends or colleagues if there is one they would particularly recommend.

She is dedicated, passionate and committed to ensuring each and every client receives the absolute best skincare advice, treatments and aftercare recommendations that is personalised to meet their beauty objectives. ‘Louise performed an outstanding treatment on one of our most hard-toplease clients and he provided nothing but praise for the entire experience.

Considering Louise had such a difficult journey to get to Ascot due to fog, she excelled in all elements of the assessment day with composure, not to mention, her smile didn’t leave her face the entire visit! Louise has worked with the brand for over ten years and her passion still bubbles over the surface for how keen she is to provide a superb treatment. I am proud that we have therapists like her representing the brand and she has set the bar for many assessments to come!’ Alicia Haynes, Training Manager, Guinot-Mary Cohr UK Ltd. Client feedback: “The overriding feeling that I have with Louise is one of total trust, in that Louise would always offer the best solution to a problem and never offer me something I did not need. THE IMPORTANCE OF

DE-CLUTTERING & CREATING A RELAXING HOME

W

ith most of us today balancing the demands of increasingly busy work and family lives, our homes have never been more valued as places of sanctuary and enjoyment.

So, it’s important that your home feels relaxing and calm, something that Helen Ross, owner of award winning North Tyneside domestic housekeeping business Bright & Beautiful, knows all about. Our home is our place of rest and refuge and somewhere to indulge our love of beautiful things. So, it’s important to look after them properly and our Bright & Beautiful professional housekeepers do this in two ways – by using the very best natural products and by following a meticulous cleaning process.

CREATING A SANCTUARY

Helen says: “We make each client’s home feel like a welcoming and soothing place to be, from the minute they walk through the door. To achieve that we use high quality, eco-friendly products that clean effectively, give a luxury finish and smell beautiful. Our attention to detail is meticulous – from hotel standard bed making to getting windows gleaming and streak free.”

DE-CLUTTER AND DE-STRESS

Helen says: “It’s been proven that clutter and mess around our homes can make us feel unwell and unhappy. Just as we detox our bodies, so we work with our clients to bring order to chaos,

tidying and cleaning their homes, and taking care of the ironing. For me a tidy house and a tidy mind definitely go together!”

CHERISHING YOUR HOME

We are seeing a real resurgence in the popularity of wood in the home, from antiques and mid-century classics to modern collectibles and they are wonderful pieces to reflect your taste and style . Wood is a naturally porous material that allows more dust and moisture in. So for older wood we always use an oil based cleaner, usually almond oil, instead of wax to care for wood pieces. Oil loosens the dirt as well as bringing out the natural sheen and keeps the wood looking good for years to come.

SHINE BRIGHT

The popularity of glass and mirrored furniture in our homes has presented a whole range of new cleaning issues! Just like glossy kitchens, they look fantastic but one fingerprint or smear and the effect is ruined. The key is to use products that really suit the surfaces so for glass in particular, we like to use a white vinegar based cleaner – a natural and very effective product.

RELAX AND UNWIND

The secret to Helen’s success is that her clients can relax, knowing that their Bright & Beautiful housekeeping team treat their homes with the utmost respect, operate the highest standards of security and are fully insured. So why not take a leaf out of their book and let someone else look after your home so you can look after yourself?

Bright & Beautiful is an award winning domestic housekeeping service that delivers the highest standards of cleaning, tidying, ironing and laundry. 90 BRAND NEW HOMES UNVEILED FOR SALE AT SMITH’S DOCK

P

laces for People and Urban Splash, the joint venture redeveloping Smith’s Dock in North Shields, have revealed for the first time their site-wide masterplan vision; it shows the extent of the new Tyneside community, with many of the planned residential and public realm phases visible.

The reveal comes ahead of the creation of 90 new homes at the waterside development, many of which will be launched for sale in March. 80 of the properties will be housed within the waterfront Smokehouses; the two buildings – designed by Simpson Haugh– will comprise a range of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom properties each offering amazing views of the River Tyne and will be ready for occupation from early next year. Prices start from £125,000. Stuart Wheeler of Simpson Haugh said: “It’s incredibly exciting to see Smokehouses take shape, one of the first phases of the Smith’s Dock masterplan we’ve been developing with Places for People since 2009. Inspired by the site’s rich history, and in collaboration with Places for People and Urban Splash, we’re creating unique, light-filled and spacious homes, the quality of which sets a benchmark for the rest of the development of the landmark site.” A further 10 homes will be launched for buyers looking for spacious family homes; known as Fab House, they are designed by North East TV star and architect George Clarke in conjunction with TDO Architecture, and TRANSFORMATION TEAM (L – R):

Guy Ackernley of Urban Splash, George Clarke, Mark Latham of Urban Splash and Nigel Brewer of Place for People. 30

stand adjacent to the three-storey Town Houses launched at the scheme late last year. Speaking of the Fab Houses, prices which start from £225,000, George said: “I am thrilled that we can now show buyers around these homes. What we’re creating here are proper family homes that are spacious, well planned and will encourage family living.” Tom Lewith, director, TDO Architecture said: ‘We are delighted to have contributed to this pioneering project. Fab House is the culmination of a rewarding design collaboration with George Clarke and extensive R&D with SIG Off-site. Modular construction has a vital role to play in reaching house building targets and as a young practice we’re excited to be part of this” Added Nigel Brewer of Places for People: “I’ve been involved in this project for many years now and it really is exciting to have reached this stage. It shows just how we’re working to make the whole area make for a wonderful community; it’s an important historic site and its redevelopment is the epitome of true regeneration – with diverse home designs, sensitively designed public spaces and the reopening the stunning waterfront.” Concluded Guy Ackernley, director of residential sales at Urban Splash: “The Smokehouses and Fab Houses bring more options to Smith’s Dock; it’s a demonstration of how varied we want the residential offering to be here and means that we can now offer properties across a much broader price spectrum. “We’ll have some amazing apartments on offer from a great, first time buyer friendly price point,of £125,000 through to the last remaining three-storey family homes on offer in the Town House first phase of the scheme. Help to Buy is available on some homes too too, making these homes an accessible option for local customers.” To register your interest or secure details ahead of the launch, please contact Rose Miller at Sanderson Young on 0191 580 7999 or email rosemarymiller@smithsdock.co.uk.

HAVE YOU DISCOVERED YOUR RELAXED GLAMOUR? British womenswear brand Mint Velvet have opened their first North East stand-alone boutique at Sanderson Arcade in Morpeth

M

int Velvet started with passion and a desire by three friends and working mothers (Liz Houghton, Jane Rawlings and Lisa Agar-Rea) who identified their own needs and desires to wear the trends in a relaxed way, to be fashionable, but not feel hampered by it, and for luxury without the matching price tag.

They set to design a collection which was contemporary, stylish with an everyday feel, and perfect for the

modern woman who wants a nod to fashion in a carefree way. MV call it relaxed glamour – easy, effortless style. And, they have recently opened their newest boutique in Morpeth, bringing their relaxed glamour collections right to your doorstep! Mint Velvet curates the ultimate wardrobe to provide stress-free dressing by taking the trends and relaxing them whilst adding tiny details to give each piece a contemporary edge. The collections keep in mind practicality so, that even on the busiest of days, you will look

effortlessly stylish. Their gorgeous Hygge range (pronounced heu-gah) is inspired by Liz’s (MV’s founder) trip to Copenhagen where she discovered the Dane’s Hygge way of life. Liz fell in love with the Scandi simplicity, and so the Hygge collection was born. The collection is packed full of super soft knits, sumptuous layering pieces and cosy cold weather accessories perfect for those tucked in winter nights, featuring luxe slippers and gowns, cashmere knits and cable knit cardis and luxurious lounge-wear detailed with lace,

Hand picking the softest yarns, cosiest cuts and most tactile textures, the Hygge collection will give you a relaxing and much deserved hug, and is worth staying in, and snuggled up, for. The brand has also included a curated edit of other brands to complement the different elements that the collection follows – Hygge REVIVE, Hygge RELAX, and Hygge HOME. This includes handcrafted body brushes from Iris Hantverk, bath products by L.A Bruket, Cashmere and Wool care products by The Laundress and Christmas spice chocolate by the Coco Chocolatier. Their latest collection, Wilderness, is Scandi and Nordic log-cabin weekend-chic at its finest! Shades of pale mocha and creams with a soft raspberry highlight pack with blue denim for an authentic casual feel. Texture is as always key with new lofty knit stitches, yarns, tassel and pompom trims. “We believe shopping should be easy and enjoyable, so we put our hearts and souls into MV to ensure that we continue to be a brand that you love as much as we do.” (Liz, MV Founder) Looking for something special

Heat the oil in a sautĂŠ pan over a medium heat, add the garlic and stir until fragrant. Add the kale with any water from washing still clinging to its leaves, the spinach, tomatoes and mushrooms and cook until almost tender. Hollow out four spaces and drop an egg into each. Put the lid on and cook over a low heat to steam for three to four minutes, depending on how you like your eggs (we only cooked two for the photo). Make the sauce by simply mixing all the ingredients together. Transfer the eggs to plates and drizzle with the dressing, sprinkled with chilli, if you want.

WORK STARTS ON NEW NORTHUMBERLAND COASTAL PATH

W

ork is due to start on the Northumberland stretch of the England Coast Path which is set to become the longest managed and way marked coastal path in the world. The 2,795 mile route will follow the coastline of England and Wales and is due to open in 2020. It will pass stunning beaches, castles, fishing villages, famous seaside resorts and dramatic landscape features, offering walkers the opportunity to experience some of the country’s most varied coastline. In Northumberland the coastal path will follow a route from the Scottish Borders right down the coastline via Berwick and Bamburgh to Seaton Sluice. Northumberland County Council will carry out the work to establish the path and will be responsible for its ongoing maintenance. Natural England will fund the establishment of the route and 75 per cent of the ongoing maintenance costs. Work on the first section of the route between Seaton Sluice and Amble is to commence over the coming weeks. An initial grant of £149,250 has been awarded to Northumberland County Council by Natural England to cover these costs. Northumberland County Councillor Glen Sanderson Cabinet Member for the environment and local services said: “ This new path will be a great addition to those who already know our superb coastline but it will open up new opportunities for visitors who want to explore the wonderful assets we have in our county. Additionally the path will help draw in visitors

40

all year round and help provide a boost to local businesses along its length.” The new route will, where possible, link into the existing Northumberland Coastal Path, but sections will need to be added to allow it to directly follow the coastline of the county. The Seaton Sluice to Amble stretch of the route has already been agreed by the Secretary of State and was proposed by Natural England following extensive research and consultation with landowners and Northumberland County Council. It will follow existing pathways on council land and recorded highways and footways and so only minor work such as the installation of gates and signage is needed.

The 2,795 mile route will follow the coastline of England and Wales and is due to open in 2020.

Work is ongoing with the planning of other sections of the route in the county. New stretches of grass pathway will need to be created between Newbiggin and Lynemouth and between Cresswell and Druridge. A further two sections of the Northumberland route - Amble to Bamburgh and Bamburgh to the Scottish Borders, are still in the research and consultation phase. www.northumberlandcoastpath.org

LIFESTYLE

The

Good Life If you fancy becoming self sufficient and producing your own tasty homegrown vegetables, then here are ten tips for starting your own vegetable patch:

1

4

2

5 6

What do your family eat? It’s all very well having a beautiful array of beetroot but if you can’t stand eating it, it’ll all go to waste. Always have a think about what your household would utilise best and start from there! Consider what is likely to thrive best depending on the month. For example, with the risk of frost being low, more tender vegetables such as courgettes and tomatoes have a better chance to thrive in June.

3

Involve the family, if your children/partner or housemates have a vested interest in what may end up on their plates, it will always help to have an extra pair of eyes or hands.

Do your research! There are several various diseases that can affect your plants and for each one, a quick Google search will bring up several forums of people having the same problem and the things they’ve tried/cures they’ve found. Official websites are great for learning your craft but on a forum you will likely discover a neat trick using common household items.

Weed, weed, weed! It’s the most important job, it will give your vegetables space to grow and will ensure there’s no pesky weed taking your crops food, light or water! Having said that, make sure you know the difference between the weeds and the flowering plants. Start small, you don’t need a jungle of potential dinners the first time you start growing your own vegetables. Start out growing easy to tend vegetables such as tomatoes, cabbage or peas. They require minimal effort and once you’ve got the hang of the basics; you’ll be more confident when you come to planting other items.

7

Don’t have a big garden? Not a problem! There’s a misconception that you need a huge space to be able to have a vegetable patch. There are several techniques you can learn to make the most out of a small space and even high rise flat dwellers can grow things in a container or pot. And not just herbs; carrots, beetroot, beans and cauliflower are just four examples of foods that can be grown in pots or containers.

8 9

Ask your local garden centre for advice. Internet searching is very handy but sometimes it is nice to chat to someone directly and your local garden centre will have a wealth of information just waiting to be tapped into by talking to the staff. Keep going. There are things you can grow all throughout the year and many people find once they’ve grown and tasted their own produce, it’s a difficult habit to give up! Summer is not the only time you can benefit from your own hard work and all year gardening is a relaxing, fun and rewarding hobby.

10

Relax! Remember that you can do everything you’re supposed to do and some bad weather, or a lack of abundant growth can be disheartening. But it isn’t your fault and you shouldn’t give up after one bad harvest. Every gardener will tell you that sometimes, for whatever reason, your efforts just don’t bear fruit (or vegetables!).

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY …BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.

Property and Affairs

This power enables your attorney to deal with your 44

bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.

Personal Welfare

This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes.
