elcome to the May issue of Seattle Natural Awakenings! This is our “Women’s Health” issue and one of my favorites of the year. Health is a deeply personal topic to me, as I live (and learn to thrive) with autoimmune disease. For years, I thought that if only I got enough acupuncture, ate enough kale or somehow cleared my mind of every last nagging worry that I could banish my symptoms. It hasn’t worked that way—it turns out there are some battles in life we are meant to fight and learn a great deal about ourselves along the way. For anyone who is experiencing chronic illness, I have just two recommendations, but they are the most important I’ve found: improve your digestion, and rethink how often you put your physical, emotional and mental needs aside to honor other commitments. Sometimes, life is unavoidably full of these commitments and we all go through seasons when it’s impossible to consistently carve out time to stay healthy, well and fit. That’s why I love “Meditation: The End of Suffering” (page 21) and Sadhguru’s emphasis on meditating as something you become; if you can’t have an ideal life right now, learn to let go of your expectations and love the life you have. It may be crazy, but there’s beauty in the chaos just look a little closer. For those days when you really do feel a little crazy, our article “Edible Hormones” (page 13) delves into recent research on a handful of power foods that have been found to offer hormone balancing properties. In a profile article (page 19), local esthetician Victoria Raiskey Anderson offers great tips and insight into the mind/body connection when it comes to skin care. Multiple Sclerosis Researchers Seek Help with Unconventional Studies

astyr University researchers are launching a series of studies into underexplored facets of multiple sclerosis, a nervous-system disorder with no known cause. An unpredictable disease, MS causes severe degenerative symptoms in some patients while others remain largely unaffected. One study, led by clinical research assistant professor Laurie Mischley, ND, will explore why some MS patients do not worsen over time, and whether diet, lifestyle and integrative medicine are related to their success. Anyone with MS can participate in the five-year study, which will involve completing an online form once every six months. Researchers will review the data for common traits shared by those with benign MS. The study will support future clinical trials measuring whether complementary, alternative and integrative medicine (CAM) can help slow the progression of MS. (Visit http://bit. ly/11t3g7p to participate in the study.) A second study explores the relationship between blood clotting and MS, and how diet affects the disease. Participants will come to Bastyr’s campus for a single visit to give a blood sample and answer questions about diet and lifestyle. “When little is known about effective treatments for conditions such as MS, it makes sense to cast a broad net to try to identify the most promising treatment options,” says Daniel C. Cherkin, PhD, director of the Bastyr University Research Institute. He says Dr. Mischley’s focus on diet and disease connections will be especially useful, since few medical researchers receive extensive training in nutrition. healthbriefs Fewer Scans May Lower Breast Cancer Risk

More Sleep Helps Shed Pounds

E

njoying more zzz’s is not usually associated with weight loss, but a growing number of epidemiological studies suggest that insufficient sleep may be linked to a greater risk of weight gain. The latest results from a study presented at the 2012 annual meeting of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior points out that sleep behavior influences body weight by affecting not only how many calories we consume, but also how much energy we expend. When researchers at Tübingen and Lübeck universities, in Germany, and Uppsala University, in Sweden, investigated the effect of short-term sleep deprivation on hunger, physical activity and energy levels, they discovered that insufficient sleep increased the participants’ sensations of hunger by raising the level of the “hunger hormone”, ghrelin. The less sleep a person had, the hungrier they felt. After only one night of disrupted sleep, the volunteers moved around less and burned off fewer calories in their resting state than their counterparts that enjoyed a good night’s sleep.

hile screening for breast cancer is important, women should avoid unnecessary medical imaging, according to a recent report issued by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) which identified two factors that increased the risk for the disease: post-menopausal hormone replacement therapy and radiation exposure from medical imaging. Physician Rebecca Smith-Bindman, a professor of radiology and biomedical imaging, epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California-San Francisco, who contributed to the IOM report, notes that CT scans and other forms of medical imaging have revolutionized medicine and can be lifesaving. However, she recommends that women engage their doctors in the decision-making process and discuss the necessity and safety of all potential radiological scans. To understand the risks and benefits, it’s suggested women ask their doctor: “Is this scan absolutely essential? Is it necessary to do it now? Are there other, alternative tests [such as thermography]? How can I be sure the test will be done in the safest way possible? Will having the scan information change the management of my disease? Can I wait until after seeing a specialist before getting the scan?”

Midwife-Led Birth Centers Improve Outcomes

W

omen that receive care at midwife-led birth centers incur lower medical costs and are less likely to have Caesarean births than women that give birth at hospitals, according to new findings by the American Association of Birth Centers (AABC). The rising number of Cesarean births in the United States (32 percent in 2010, according to the National Centers for Disease Control National Vital Statistics Report) has generated concern due to short- and long-term health implications for women, their newborns and future pregnancies. The AABC study, which included more than 15,500 women that received care in 79 midwife-led birth centers in 33 states from 2007 through 2010, found that fewer than 6 percent of the participants required a Caesarean birth, compared to nearly 24 percent similarly low-risk women cared for in a hospital setting. Birth centers—homelike facilities functioning within the health care system—are based on a wellness model of pregnancy and birth personalized to individual needs. “They are uniquely positioned to provide healthy women and their newborns with maternity care, avoiding unnecessary Caesarean births,” advises AABC President-Elect Lesley Rathbun, a certified nurse midwife and family nurse practitioner. “Americans need to learn about the high-quality care that midwife-led birth centers offer.” Source: American College of Nurse-Midwives

ne of the most common and uncomfortable symptoms of menopause may respond positively to a simple, no-cost measure. Health researchers at Penn State report that menopausal women that exercise may experience fewer hot flashes in the 24 hours following physical activity. In this first-time study of objective versus subjective, or self-reported, hot flashes, the Pennsylvania researchers studied 92 menopausal women for 15 days.

aking a brisk walk or bike ride may stave off cognitive decline better than reaching for the daily crossword puzzle, says a new study published in the journal Neurology. Researchers at Scotland’s University of Edinburgh reviewed the medical records of more than 600 Scots born in 1936 that were given MRI scans at age 73. “People in their 70s that participated in more physical exercise, including walking several times a week, had less brain shrinkage and other signs of aging in the brain than those that were less physically active,” says study author Alan J. Flax

Unwelcome symptoms of perimenopause (which can last years before the completion of menopause) can be offset through daily ingestion of ground flax, which can be added to cereals, salads and other foods. Ground flaxseed mixed with dried berries is particularly palatable. As the ovarian reserve of naturally manufactured hormones exhausts itself and prompts an imbalance, flaxseed is particularly effective in rebalancing levels of desirable estrogen metabolites, such as breast-friendly 2-hydroxylestrone. and increase flexibility. A new yogi might wonder what the heat adds to the practice. Students tend to sweat prolifically, and the warmth of the room burns a few additional calories. These differences lead to detoxification of the body and skin, as well as added flexibility due to warm muscles that are capable of stretching farther. Any yoga practice will help detoxify and stretch the body, but hot yoga is even more effective in these areas than other forms of yoga. There are a variety of temperature ranges for hot yoga, with the heat in some studios being set around 105 degrees. Meanwhile, power vinyasa studios tend to set the heat to 90-95 degrees, and many other studios leave the thermostat at room temperature. Rachel James, owner of Hot Yoga of Mill Creek, said that one of the most common misconceptions about hot yoga is that you have to already be very fit to attend class. “You are able to do it at any age, with any physical disability,” said James. “It is a low impact workout, with high results.” James, herself, lost weight and experienced a lot of other benefits when she started her hot yoga practice. “I believe [yoga] really helps you to become a more balanced person overall,” said James; “I lost 25 pounds and feel better than I have ever felt. I was an athlete who ate very well and worked out five to six days a week; however… It was with hot yoga that I saw a huge change and now love the way my body looks. It also helped with stress and injuries… I will practice hot yoga for the rest of my life.” Of course, James said students should check with their doctor if they have health concerns or if they are pregnant. “I believe that the Pacific Northwest is pretty active and health conscious,” added James. “Since it is pretty cold and rainy here, students love to do hot yoga for many reasons, but one of the top ones is to get warm.” Writer Andrea Blair Cirignano is a local yoga instructor with a journalism background. is not enough. For any other creature on this planet, when the stomach is full, life is settled. But for a human being, life does not end with the survival process. Actually, for a human being, life begins only after survival is fulfilled. Meditation means giving you an experience, an inner state, where what is you and what is yours is separate. It brings an absolute clarity of perception; you see life just the way it is. Right now, your ability to go through this world is only to the extent that you clearly see it. For example, for thousands of years, people went on arguing about whether the planet is round or flat. Leave all the textbooks that you have read aside, take a walk and see—in your experience, is this planet round or flat? In your experience, it is still flat. This argument could have continued forever, but man started flying.

We went up and looked down and it was very clear that the planet was round. We even went to the moon and looked down, and it was 100 percent clear. Only when we removed ourselves from this earth and looked down was there no more argument about it. Otherwise, we would still be arguing. The same is true for your own body and mind; unless there is a little distance, you don’t see it the way it is, because you are in it. Meditation is a simple process that gives you a little distance from your own mind and your own body. You have probably heard of the word “Buddha.” Bu means “buddhi,” or the intellect. Dha means “dada,” or one who is above. One who is above his intellect is a Buddha. A Buddha has clear perception of the nature of his mind. One who is in the intellect is a nonstop suffering human being. Look at this sincerely. Whatever you experience as moments of happiness and peacefulness are just those moments where you are able to leave anxiety, tension and stress behind. But if you turn back, they will be sitting right there, because once you are in your intellect, stress, anxiety and tension are very normal. But if you are above the intellect, it is the end of suffering. Being a Buddha means there is no question of suffering, because suffering has either come through your body or through your mind. Do you know any other kind of suffering other than physical and mental suffering? Once there is a distance from your physical body and your mental structure, that is the end of suffering. Meditation is the first and the last freedom, because it gives you a gallery view of your own body and your own mind. There can be no suffering once this distance is established. After the rebates and energy savings, I will basically be paying the same per month.”

any of us suspect that our homes could be more airtight and energy efficient. We might even wish we could be more comfortable at home—that we could get rid of cold drafts, for instance. But where do we begin?

Knowledge Is Power Before starting to fix what’s wrong, a homeowner must identify problem areas. The first step is to get what’s called an energy assessment. During an energy assessment, a Seattle City Light auditor visits the home and thoroughly inspects the different contributors to the home’s energy footprint, including the heating system, insulation, windows, and major appliances. Inspections may also use an infrared camera or depressurization test to evaluate air leakage in the home. Seattle City Light and Community Power Works offer home energy assessments by certified auditors for just $95 (valued at $400). Income eligible customers may receive their assessment for free, along with subsidized energyefficiency upgrades (Seattle.gov/housing/homewise). Soon after the assessment, the homeowner will receive an “Energy Performance Scorecard” that rates the current efficiency of the home and offers suggestions for improvements. The report includes the estimated costs of each

The Puget Sound region may not be the sunniest spot on earth, but it is actually a very good place for solar panels. Not only can a properly sized solar panel array provide enough electrical power to meet a household’s needs, it is also a sound investment. The federal government offers a tax credit worth 30 percent of the cost of installing a solar electric system. Washington State will pay for the solar electricity homeowners generate. Incentives are even higher for systems that are manufactured in Washington. In addition, there is no state sales tax for most residential systems. The greatest incentive, however, might be watching the electrical meter spin backward on a sunny day. Becky Chan, a resident of Seattle’s Greenlake neighborhood, is adding a large solar panel array to her home (installed by A & R Solar), which will bring her a federal rebate of $6,360. Despite the large rebate, Chan says her primary motivation for going solar was to help the environment. “Don’t get me wrong,” Chan says. “I’m happy to get the rebates, but we need to take care of the earth for future generations.” The Solarize Washington program facilitates neighbors organizing group-buying purchases that can result in discounts of 10 to 20 percent to residents of NW Seattle. When combined with the incentives and rebates above, the additional Solarize discount allows most participants to recoup about half the cost of installation in the first year.

Is an Appliance Upgrade in Order? Seattle City Light offers generous rebates to homeowners willing to replace their old appliances with new, energy-efficient models. Customers who purchase a new, approved refrigerator can get a $50 rebate. Getting rid of a second refrigerator or freezer earns a $30 rebate (plus free removal of the old appliance). A new clothes washer earns a $100 rebate. Customers wanting to save even more on their electric bills and get even bigger rebates can trade in their existing water heater for a new, ultra-efficient heat pump water heater and get a $500 check in the mail. For customers with electric heat, the city offers a $1,500 rebate for upgrading to a ductless heat pump, which can be twice as energyefficient as the old baseboard models. natural awakenings

Toilets are the main source of water use in the home, and getting a new one can lower utility bills by about $260 a year. Customers of Seattle Public Utilities can get a $30 rebate on a new high-efficiency toilet with the “WaterSense” label. Qualifying low-income customers can get a new toilet for free. Homeowners can reduce the effects of toxic stormwater runoff by installing a rain garden or cistern. A rain garden acts like a native forest, collecting, absorbing, and filtering stormwater runoff from a home’s rooftop. A cistern is a large tank that collects the water from the roof and stores it for later use, such as for watering the lawn during dry spells. Many residents of Seattle’s Ballard, North Union Bay, Windermere, and Delridge neighborhoods qualify for the RainWise program from Seattle Public Utilities. The program rebates up to 100 percent of the cost of installing a rain garden or cistern system. The average rebate is about $3,500.

Lowering Barriers While many homeowners would like to help the environment and lower their utility bills by making their homes more efficient, they worry about the initial investment. “People are looking for ways to do more for the environment and save money,” says Shannon Ellis-Brock, chief operating officer of Puget Sound Cooperative Credit Union, an official lending partner for Community Power Works. PSCCU offers “Energy Smart” loans up to $50,000 to cover a wide array of green upgrades for borrowers who may or may not qualify for a traditional home equity loan. “Now is a really good time because of the rebates,” says Ellis-Brock; however, she cautions that borrowers can’t always expect their loan payment to be offset completely by energy savings. “It’s about being more comfortable in your home, saving energy, and reducing your impact on climate change, as part of the total package” she says. Realtor Kim Mulligan echoes that sentiment. “It’s not just a monetary thing; it’s also about comfort and con-


servation.” While she expects that her new heat pump and insulation will add value to her home, she is most excited about eliminating the cold spots and drafts that plague older homes like hers. “I'm looking forward to sitting and watching TV and not having to have an afghan on to stay warm,” she says.
