PLANTS AND PETS

Create a home that connects you to nature without endangering your furry family members..

Are you feeling the excitement I'm feeling at being able to travel again? For most of my life, I've traveled and explored the world. For relaxation, I've often sought out the most unexplored, unspoiled places I can find in nature. For business, I've gone in search of the small artisanal factories overseas, where families have passed down techniques for generations, and who can make our indoor/outdoor furniture in a responsible manner for our residential and contract customers around the world. And while I haven't been able to get overseas again - yet - I was recently able to travel to the coast of California for a week. My spirit was restored. I am sure many of you reading this can relate to the feeling of well being that accompanies any journey out into the pristine, the unspoiled, the natural.

And speaking of the California coastline, I am excited to announce that, this Summer, we are introducing our first licensed indoor/outdoor furniture collection with an internationally recognized award winning interior designer who grew up on the wild edges of the California coastline, Los Angeles based Laura Muller, the President of Four Point Design Build, Inc. I hope you will take a few minutes to view the Provenance Signature Collection by Laura Muller for Seasonal Living on our website HERE. COVER STORY

R

V travel is booming. Across the country, people are looking for safe ways to travel, unwind, unplug, and get connected with friends, family, and nature... without having to jump through any pandemicrelated travel hoops. There are a few things to learn about RV'ing, but it is nothing too difficult. You can generally find all of the information you need at the rental location. If you want more information, there is an abundance of videos online and a very strong community of RV'ers who are happy to help. Your regular drivers license will work for most RV and motorcoaches. If you want more instruction, you can usually get it at the rental location. Many offer onsite driving lessons for those who purchase or lease. RV travel parks are similar to hotels in that they range

from basic necessities to five-star amenities like pools, gyms, spas, theaters, golf, and onsite chefs (see our top 10 list of luxury parks on the next page). Also, similar to hotels, the price varies accordingly. At either end of the spectrum, you are sure to pay less for an RV vacation. And that's not the only advantage. RV travel is different... and because of that, there are a different set of unique advantages. ESSENTIAL LIVING - When traveling in an RV, space is limited. As such, you will need to be very thoughtful about what you pack. Have no fear, most current RVs are well equipped with basic cooking equipment, etc., but there just won't be space to bring along every modern convenience. When you pare down, you will discover what is really important and make the best of what you have at hand. While WiFi is widely available at RV parks, this will be a good time to escape emails and hashtags, disconnect from the web, and re-connect with loved ones. Those

RV TRAVEL TIPS FOR BEGINNERS MAKE A BUDGET - this goes for most travel, but a budget will help you stay on track and prevent overspending. TAKE IT SLOW - often the best moments of RV travel happen on the way to the destination. The destination is NOT the beginning of your adventure. PLAN, BUT BE SPONTANEOUS - a good plan is essential, but there will be many things to see and do along the way. Be prepared to stop and enjoy. MAKE A CHECKLIST - make a list of things to do when you arrive and depart each park that includes RV maintenance, but also things like 'is the dog in the RV'. BRING BASIC TOOLS, BUT NOT TOO MANY - a basic set of tools should be sufficient, but there could be a few extra things to bring based on the RV you are renting. Consult the rental agent and review videos online for what is really essential. The RV community is strong and generally willing to help if you hit a snag. DON'T PANIC! - things might go wrong. It's all part of the adventure. Be prepared to pivot when necessary... and keep at least one phone charged. PACK WHAT IS NECESSARY - pare down to the bare essentials. This will cut down on the weight of the RV, keep clutter to a minimum, and, hey... make more space for souvenirs along the way. BRING ENTERTAINMENT - there will be time between destinations. Keep everyone happy with an assortment of reading or viewing materials. BRING FOOD - eliminate mood swings and unnecessary stops by ensuring that there are ample supplies of light snacks for the journey. DUMP TANKS OFTEN - don't wait until it is necessary. Get a systematic plan in place to tackle this task often.

PANZANELLA SALAD A hearty, rustic loaf of bread will be best for the croutons. We selected a whole wheat bread with plenty of grains and small seeds. Choose the bread that suits you best, but look for one that is not too soft and with a substantial crust.

CHEESE, PLEASE While cheese is not required, it will certainly take this salad to new heights. It will add a new texture and flavor. The flavor you add will depend on the type of cheese you use. The recipe is written with mozzarella, but you could also use feta, smoked Gouda, or even goat cheese in its place.

neighborhood wine A neighborhood wine tasting party might be just the thing to bring people together outdoors safely this summer after a long year of being separated. More than simply tasting wines, this is a way to gather a small group of friends for conversation and fun.

TIPS TO GET STARTED • Arrange seating areas that encourage conversation • Have a plan in place to time wines according to temperature needs and what you will be serving as small bites to accompany the wines. • Choose a theme, invitations, and decor that match how formal or informal you want the party to be. • Serve wines from lightest to heaviest and pair accordingly with small bites. • Consider hiring a wine specialist or view a couple of wine tasting videos with your guests before you begin. • Arrange for transportation for those who need it after the party. Don't let anyone drive home after drinking. Send invitations that let your guests know exactly what to expect. Be clear about how formal (or not) the party will be so people know how to dress. Address what and how much food will be served so your guest know if they should eat before arriving. Need a theme? Consider something like tapas for a selection of Spanish wines or small Italian bites to accompany wines from the regions of Italy. Want to match it to your decor? Try a tasting of all rosés and serve light bites with a decor colored black, white, pink, and peach. Create a playlist that suits the theme. Your decor does not have to be too complicated. Start with picking fresh greenery from your yard, add corks, grapes and candles. Keep the focus on the wines and bites, and let the decor enhance the friendly, casual neighborhood ambience.

tasting party FOR SUPPLIES YOU WILL NEED: • glasses (real glasses) • scorecards (optional) • a spit bucket • table linens • small plates • utensils • servingware • seating

Choose foods to support your theme. Create simple bites that won't break the bank or take all of your time. They should complement the wine and not be seen as a full meal. Keep bread and water available throughout the party. Depending on the wine variety you could serve things like hard cheeses, sausages, charcuterie, fresh fruit, chocolate, or nuts. For the wine, five varieties is a good place to start. Have 2 bottles of each variety for every 4-6 guests... one bottle for the tasting portions and one bottle for those who wish to continue drinking that variety later during the party. Also, be sure to have some non-alcoholic beverage option(s) available for those who do not wish to drink... or continue drinking. Party games and favors are optional, but a good way to make the party memorable. For games, consider your theme. Create a trivia game around the regions of Italy or play a card game from Spain. Your favors could be a simple as a personalized corkscrew or, for very small groups, a wine-themed gift basket.

DESIGNING A PET-FRIENDLY HOME OVER 85 MILLION U.S. HOUSEHOLDS HAVE AT LEAST ONE PET ACCORDING TO THE MOST RECENT STATISTICS. IF ONE OF THOSE HOUSEHOLDS IS YOURS, YOU MAY HAVE ASKED YOURSELF, "HAVE I CREATED A SANCTUARY FOR MYSELF AND MY PET?" IF YOU AREN'T SURE OR YOU KNOW YOU COULD MAKE SOME IMPROVEMENTS, READ THROUGH OUR HELPFUL TIPS TO POINT YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

NO MORE HAIRY CHAIRS Select upholstered pieces in a fabric that won't easily be covered in fur and clean easily. Avoid fabrics like velour, corduroy, and velvet, which attract and hold fur. Consider more durable materials like leathers and heavy twills. Invest in quality fabrics that are soft and sumptuous, but still strong enough to withstand claws. REMOVE THE TEMPTATION For many pets, exposed wood is an invitation to chew (or scratch). Steer clear of exposed wicker or rattan. A sisal wrapped leg might just as well be a scratching post. Go for metal or chrome legs for safe results. ON THE FLOOR If your pet goes outdoors, it will inevitably bring some of it inside. Even indoor pets can cause problems with occasional accidents. Traditional wood floors are not ideal for homes with pets. Consider laminate, ceramic, or stone. These flooring solutions are easy to keep clean and also keep pet bellies cool in warmer months. CHAOS CONTROL Stay in control by stowing your pet's things when not in use and creating safe play-zones. Keep toys in a basket. Find a discreet spot to tuck away food bowls and bring them out only for meal time. Keep water available at all times, but in an 'out of the way' space. Limit indoor play to one space, if possible, to train your pet to not be rambunctious in less favorable areas of your home.

throne does not have to stick out like a sore thumb in your design. There are many choices now for pet beds that will complement your look. There are also many great designs that are a frame and comfy, washable pillow insert. Customize the pillow covering to perfectly match the look of your design. WASH & GO If possible, create a barrier between the outside door and the rest of the house. For example, a door between the entry or mudroom and the rest of the house would be the perfect way to isolate your pet briefly while you remove mud from paws or dry them off after a walk in the rain. Removing dirt from your pet will be a lot easier than removing it from your sofa. WINDOW WATCHERS Most pets like to look through the windows. Keep the window sills free of objects and curtains pulled back when possible. If you have blinds or shades, keep them raised just enough to allow heads to see from the bottom of the window. A cat weaving in and out of blinds equals you need new blinds. BULL IN A CHINA SHOP Avoid losing your favorite objects by moving them out of harm's way. Many pets have big, clumsy, uncontrollable parts that accidentally send vases, candles, and picture frames to the ground. Move them up and away, when possible, and don't be ashamed to use a little poster putty on the bottom of things for a little extra security.

ROYAL TREATMENT Let's face it, every pet needs a throne. However, their

ROLLERSKATING REVIVED WHAT'S OLD IS WHAT'S NEW. GRAB A PAIR OF SKATES AND TAKE IT TO THE STREETS... OR FIND A RINK NEAR YOU TO ROLL YOUR CARES AWAY.

by Meredith Weiss President, Merri Interiors, Inc.

Treadmills and yoga aren’t the only hot exercise trends. Roller-skating got a huge boost in 2020 which is continuing today as it is a fun, safe way to relax, to dance, and to get exercise, whether indoor or outdoors. Most of us, depending on our ages, remember jamming to our favorite 60’s, 70’s, 80s or 90s tunes while skating around a rink or on the hardwood floor with our friends. We were having so much fun! We weren’t thinking of exercise, we weren’t thinking of wellness, we weren’t thinking of heart health, we were just enjoying our time with our friends listening to music. Rolling with the wind through our hair and dancing on wheels. Like most people, when we grew up we stopped meeting our friends on a Friday night at the rink and we forgot all about roller-skating, but now roller-skating is once again bringing joy back into people’s lives. And now, it’s not just for the fun of it but also for all the things we never thought about back then - the health and wellness benefits. Is roller-skating something that interests you? If so, have you thought about engaging in this kind of fun in your own home? Does your home

have a spot for you to enjoy skating? Skating in your home does not necessarily require a huge space. You can use a small square or oval space and the floor surface doesn’t need to be hardwood. It could be laminate, linoleum, luxury vinyl plank and even concrete. If you’re thinking your roller skates are going to damage your hardwood floors, you are wrong. Outdoor wheels are much softer than indoor wheels, so you can absolutely roller skate to your heart’s content without damaging your beautiful floors. There are many articles you can consult online about what types of roller skate wheels are best for where you want to skate. Google is your best friend. Many people are redoing their basements now, and if you’re considering that, too, and hate the idea of lifting weights or running on a treadmill, re-doing your basement to include a rollerskating area could be the perfect solution for you. Roller-skating is such an easy sport to get involved with and people ages 3 to 95 years old can skate and have fun. It’s a wonderful sport for the whole family to enjoy together.

If you’ve skated to music in the past, but it’s been a long time since the last time you put on your eight wheels, you’ll be surprised how fast your muscle memory comes back. It’s like riding a bike. When you put on a great playlist, the memories will come flooding in and your feet will not want to stop. If you’re a beginner or haven’t skated in a while, it may be smart to wear protection such as wrist guards, knee and elbow pads and maybe even a helmet because, just like with any sport you do, you want to make sure you’re keeping your body safe from harm because falls do happen and they certainly feel different than they did when you were 10! If you follow the roller-skating hashtag on Instagram, [ #rollerskating ], you will find so many people of all ages to follow for inspiration, advice and a sense of community. As an avid skater myself, I grew up skating with my father and the rest of my siblings. My children skate now, too, and it’s a fun activity we do in our house together. To have my children enjoy an activity with me that makes them smile while we dance and have fun together to music - that also keeps them getting healthier and healthier - is pure joy for this Mom! I hope you will seek out a rink or outdoor skating part close to your own homes, if you can’t skate indoors, so you can discover the feeling of freedom, happiness and community that rollerskating can bring to your life. Whether rolling to the sound of the wind or your favorite playlist, roller-skating is #wellnessonwheels. Have fun!

HIGH STYLE ON THE OPEN ROAD

Just because RV has the word “vehicle” in it doesn’t mean it’s the same as a car, it’s much more like a “tiny home”. There are so many ways that you can infuse your rig (that’s what the cool kids call it) with your personal style! Just like interior home spaces, paint is going to be your best friend. If the rig is outdated, it probably has a dark interior. Brighten up the space by repainting the interior then layer on the decorative elements like rugs, textiles, art and even custom window treatments.

Interior designer RACHEL MORIARTY renovated a 22" Airstream Bambi for a client and shares her top takeaways for transforming your own RV or camper.

PRO TIP: USE Command Strips as hooks and also to hang light canvas art. Also make sure everything that you bring in can easily be stored behind locked doors because the inside of an RV is kind of like an earthquake inside when it’s going down the road at 70 mph.

17

his year, we saw a growing demand for recreational vehicles and travel trailers in the US in large part due to the recent pandemic. Individuals and families rethought how to regain a sense of freedom during quarantine. With an RV, they could travel safely and roam the country while remaining socially distant. The thing about these recreational vehicles is that the interior can either be outdated or basic. Similar to what designers would call “builder basic” in the home industry. Since an RV is truly your home away from home, you should elevate your experience by personalizing it as you would your home. Just like a home, you can

make modifications to the layout of the interior. For example, if you have an online business, you may want to reconfigure the space to accommodate a small office zone. I have a client that travels with her two large poodles, so we transformed the dinette area into a large sectional seating area for lounging. Finally, consider joining a Facebook group (or two) that focuses on RV Renovation. I didn’t even know that these existed before I became an Airstream renovator! Search for Facebook groups that focus on Airstreams such as “Airstream Interiors” or “Airstream Addicts”. The groups can be very inspiring but more importantly they’re an excellent resource when you run into the inevitable snafu that comes with renovating.

WATCH THE WEIGHT

Fun adventures are had in RV’s so make sure you pay attention to the types of surfaces and textiles you are bringing into the space. I love working with outdoor performance fabrics like Sunbrella. They come in so many vibrant colors and are easy to live with which is exactly what you need when you’re on the road! You never know which type of environment you’re going to be in from one trip to the next.

One major difference between redesigning an RV or travel trailer versus a home is the weight of the materials that you are bringing into the project! Inside an RV consider vinyl murals, removable wallpaper like Tempaper, laminate if you’re refacing your cabinets, or peel and stick floor decals and tile in vibrant colors and patterns from Mirth Studio. You can use them on the floor as intended or use them to update the backsplash area or bathroom walls.

With over 20 years as an interior designer, Mark Stocker is making colorful waves as the principal of his own design firm in San Diego, CA. His designs are refined, modern, and vibrant. His experience in the model home industry makes it easy for him to walk into a space and re-imagine it for maximum usage and appeal. Here, we highlight two of Stocker's recent projects... in living color.

LA JOLLA In La Jolla, Mark turns his attention toward creating a cool and modern space that incorporates the best of indoor/outdoor living with five different patios. With an interior courtyard at the heart of the home,

Mark seamlessly blended the space to allow his clients to take advantage of the Southern California climate. With the Pacific Ocean as a dramatic backdrop, he kept the architectural lines clean and the palette white. This allowed him to infuse loads of color, bold geometric patterns, and rich, textured materials. There is harmony felt moving from one space to the next, from indoor to outdoors. Being keenly aware of the effect saltwater has on outdoor furnishings, Mark relied heavily on Seasonal Living products to create modern outdoor spaces that blend perfectly with indoor spaces... and are built to stand the test of time (and nature).

studio MAHA

ENCINITAS Modern. Bold. Red. This remodel was a monumental task, wherein Mark determined the best way to transform the Mediterranean style home was to strip away the flourishes and start from a clean slate. That included removing a staircase/pantry

that divided the kitchen and living areas and installing an open staircase that doubled the space visually (see cover). By maintaining a minimalist white palette throughout the interior, Mark was able to focus the attention on luxe finishes and a curated collection of modern art. Using the client's favorite color, red, he tied the spaces together with accents in various shades to create a welcoming and ultra-modern home.

ABOVE - Bright, vibrant color puts an exclamation point on the neutral background of this oceanside patio designed for the clients' daughter.

After much research and initial interviews, the family selected us to bring their Florida vacation home dreams to life. Our team provided interior design for living areas and decorating services for the bedrooms and several additional spaces— living room, dining room, kitchen, and even the outdoor spaces— in this waterfront condo on Sunny Isles Beach. QUALITY IS ALWAYS IN STYLE.

LIGHTWEIGHT OUTDOOR FURNITURE Furniture pieces that are easy to store, rearrange or move to another location. Particularly, when selecting pieces for vacation homes in Florida, we need to think about the flexibility to easily move the furniture when our clients are not at their homes.

WHAT WAS THE DESIGN BRIEF GIVEN TO YOU BY THIS CLIENT? Our clients were dreaming of a place to disconnect and to unwind from their day to day lifestyle in the city. They wanted a place close to the beach where they could have that special feeling of luxury and indulgence that we get when staying in a luxury hotel in the comfort of their own home away from home. Our team turned their 4,346-square-foot condo into an ocean-inspired haven. A modern take on nautical, each room in this home represents either the beginning, in-transit, or destination phases of traveling the high seas on a sailboat. To accomplish this, our team blended natural materials and finishes, from bleached oak to rustic to walnut, and incorporated a variety of blues into the design. Each space was meant to encourage rest and relaxation through calming modern style, streamlined furniture selections, and a tranquil color palette. Functional interiors enhance every interaction between family members and their visitors, making the most of the apartment’s spaces and stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES YOU ENCOUNTERED AND WHAT SOLUTIONS DID YOU DEVISE TO DELIGHT YOUR CLIENTS? The condo featured a large rectangular great room, meant to house the dining room, living room, and kitchen spaces. Our team’s goal for such a large open-concept space was to break up the room to create individual areas without losing the openness. We accomplished this through careful space planning and material and lighting selection. Another design challenge was to add the needed lighting to the condo. As the unit had just a few j-boxes locations, our design team came with creative and functional design solutions to bring lighting to all the spaces. Solutions like table lamps everywhere and lighting selections with creative installations like the one in the dining room. WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU WITNESSED THIS PAST YEAR IN HOW YOUR CLIENTS ARE APPROACHING THE INDOOR/ OUTDOOR LIFESTYLE? An indoor/outdoor connection has always been on the top of the list of our client's requests. The truth is that with the COVID-19 pandemic our clients are prioritizing this request in their home projects. All of them are looking to create fresh-air havens. Since this condo design project was inspired by the journey of sailing from one destination to the next, we were inspired to create a chic indoor-outdoor feel in the common spaces.

GRILLED CHIPOLTE CHICKEN AND PEACH TACOS continued from page 10

For the tacos:

5. Assemble the tacos with a bed of red cabbage first. Add a few pieces of chicken and two peach wedges. Add scallions and sliced peppers. Serve immediately with a lime wedge to squeeze over the top.

• 12-15 tortillas, corn or corn/flour blend • 1 red cabbage, thinly shaved • 3 peaches, each cut into 8 wedges • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 5 scallions, white portion only - sliced diagonally • 3 serrano or jalapeños, thinly sliced with seeds removed • lime wedges The instructions: For the marinade: 1. Add all of the ingredients (except the chicken) to a food processor. Blitz until smooth, at least two minutes. 2. Place the chicken breasts and marinade in a bowl or plastic container and rub the chicken breasts to ensure that they are completely covered. 3. Cover the chicken and marinade with a lid or plastic wrap and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or up to one day. Remove marinated chicken from the refrigerator, keeping it covered, 30 minutes before grilling. For the tacos: 1.

Bring grill to high heat. Preheat oven to 350˚F. Ensure that chicken breasts have a good coating of marinade on both sides.

2. Place chicken on grill and cook until it is seared and has good grill marks on both sides (about 3-5 minutes). Move chicken to the oven and continue cooking until it reaches an internal temperature of 165˚F (about 15-20 minutes). Remove the chicken and allow to rest for 10 minutes before cutting into 1/ 2 inch slices. 3. While the chicken is in the oven, lightly brush the peach wedges with olive oil on each side. Place them on the grill and cook until wellseared on each side (about 2-3 minutes). Transfer to a plate to cool slightly before assembling tacos. 4. Just before assembling the tacos, place the tortillas on the grill briefly... just long enough to soften them and slightly toast the edges. Remove them from the heat, stack them, and cover them loosely with aluminum foil to keep them warm.

RV TRAVEL

continued from page 3 board games hiding on the top shelf of the closet... bring those, and replace the sound of ringtones with laughter. PET-FRIENDLY - Good news! Snowflake can come, too. There's no need for boarding your furry friends or hiring someone to stop by the house everyday for pet care. RV parks are very welcoming to pets. This will give you the chance to connect your complete family in a way that seldom happens. MIND AND BODY - RV travel can help you reduce stress. You will be doing many things that you don't normally do at home... hiking, rafting, walking in nature, fishing, etc. This exercise will boost your spirits and connect you to nature. The fresh, clean air and sunshine will replenish your body in a way you might not have known you needed. Calm settings and quiet sounds of chirping birds and running water will put you at ease. If you live in an urban area, you will be delighted to see a nightly display of twinkling stars that can't be seen from your backyard. NEW ADVENTURES - This kind of travel generally leads to natural settings or national parks with some of the most beautiful views on the planet. Expect to see things that you will remember forever. Share new adventures with those who are close to you. Even the most simple things like chopping wood, cooking dinner over an open fire, or toasting marshmallows will have a lasting impression and create lifelong memories.
