S UMMER’S END NOTE FROM THE EDITOR... Embrace. Feast. Celebrate. I am so excited to share with you the premiere issue of Seasonal Living Magazine - our new bi-monthly online magazine. Through inspirational images and articles about travel, food, entertaining and home decor, we hope you'll find personalized ideas that will help you and your families celebrate and redefine the art of indoor/outdoor living. Here at Seasonal Living, where we design, source and manufacture award-winning boutique indoor/outdoor furniture, lighting, and decorative accents, we’ve always believed in traveling to the source. Whether that be some hidden tropical gem or to the heart of America’s furniture country, we look for small factories that mingle their artisan skills with 21st century production methods while (where possible) looking for ways in which we can maintain, support or grow traditional craftsmanship to be passed down through future generations, while also being conscious of sustainability. I can't wait to share some of these stories with you, and in this first issue of Seasonal Living, see our video on how our ceramics are hand made by artisans who are appointed to the Royal Kingdom of Thailand.

SEASONAL food

WINE POACHED PE ARS Now that it's late summer, pears have returned for the season. To take advantage of their local availability, work them into savory and sweet dishes. For savory dishes consider pears with chicken and gorgonzola or combine them with pork chops and red onion. Of course, sweet and fruity pears are very well-suited for baked goods and desserts. Here we have a pear recipe that is simple enough to prepare, but will wow your guests with its elegance. These pears are covered in a luscious wine sauce flavored with robust spices and a touch of citrus. Search for pears that are ripe but still a bit firm. Additionally, look for pears with stems as they will make the best presentation. It's hard to believe that something so simple can be so flavorful. By chilling, the fresh pear flavor melds wonderfully with the fragrant and slightly spicy syrup. And because they will chill for several hours or overnight, they are the perfect make ahead dessert. Take them outside to finish off the meal around the fire or carry them down to the lakeshore. Top them off with a bit of sweetened whipped cream or a simple zesting of orange.

WINE POACHED PEARS Ingredients: 6 servings prep time 5 min, cook time 35 min •

zest and juice of one lemon

6 ripe but firm Bosc pears, peeled with stems left on

2 cups/480ml red wine

½ cup/120ml water

¼ cup/50g cup sugar

3 whole cloves

1 cinnamon stick

1 whole star anise

Instructions: 1. Stir together all ingredients except the pears in a large saucepan.Bring mixture to a boil over medium heat. Bring mixture to a boil over medium heat. Continue cooking for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. 2. Add pears to saucepan and cover with a parchment round to prevent splattering. Reduce to simmer. Continue cooking for 20-30 minutes or until pears are tender. Carefully turn pears by their stems once or twice during cooking to cook evenly. 3. Remove pears and set aside. Bring liquid back to a boil and cook until reduced by half, 7-9 minutes. 4. Place pears in a shallow bowl and pour syrup over them. Wrap loosely and refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serving. 5. Serve chilled pears in small, shallow bowls and pour a bit of syrup over each. Top with lightly sweetened whipped cream, if desired.

SEASONAL entertaining

AL FRE SCO SOIRÉE S

Indoor/outdoor living is at its best with al fresco dining. Blurring the line between the interior of your home and the outdoors makes it easy to entertain your guests in style without having to decide between paper or plastic. Here we have some of our top tips to help you in your entertaining efforts. Bring the indoors out - choose unconventional seating by bringing some of your furniture outside (or consider purchasing furniture that works both inside or outside). Set a warm and inviting stage using furniture and accents that don’t necessarily look like they are just outdoor décor. Create a focal point or two with a unique piece of art or furniture that is a conversation starter. Define your space - use planters and cordless lighting to set the entertaining space apart from the rest of your outdoor space.

WHAT TO SERVE Weather-proof snacks and appetizers •

Choose things that won't be affected by heat such as nuts, olives, or roasted cherry tomatoes

Avoid cheeses (save them for dinner)

Use thoughtful lighting - create a glow with lighting. Use cordless LED lights that cast a soft glow on your guests. Set up a secondary serving area - establish stations for drinks and appetizers to encourage mingling among your guests and prevent over-crowding in one spot. Add natural elements - decorate with what is around

Classics and something unexpected

you. Create a centerpiece using pinecones, wildflowers, or

seashells and sand.

Offer favorites like salads and BBQ, but toss in a dish that isn't necessarily thought of as outdoor fare.

Work with the weather - expect the best, but be

have a more informal feel if you use items that coordinate, but don’t necessarily match. Set the mood - create a playlist that embodies the vibe you want. Choose music that is lively but not overbearing. Keep the volume at a level that allows people to enjoy it without it interrupting conversation.

Keep bugs at bay - place citronella lanterns or incense strategically around the entertaining space to prevent uninvited guests. Gather around the fire - everyone loves an outdoor fire. Create a warm spot for people to gather with an outdoor fire pit. Add stools around the fire to encourage guests to linger.
