The Residence Life staff at Southern knows that choosing to live on campus is an important decision. Southern offers a variety of living options and experiences to support you and your needs as you transition through your academic career. Nationally, residential students tend to perform better academically than commuting students, thanks to the additional support they receive while living in the residence halls; residents have access to full-time, live-in professional staff and trained graduate and undergraduate student staff members who serve as resources and sponsor a variety of educational/ informational programs, social events, and leadership opportunities. Residential students live within walking distance of academic and student support services, dining and athletic facilities, the library, the Adanti Student Center, and the fitness center. Inside this booklet you will find out all about what Residence Life has to offer. Standard Amenities Southern’s residence halls offer a variety of housing options. Applying for Housing and Meal Plan Basics Applying for Housing
1. Visit our online guide for newly admitted students at SouthernCT.edu/orientation/ nextsteps and follow the directions. 2. Log in to the Next Steps Checklist, activate your Owls email account, and pay the $200 non-refundable admissions deposit. 3. From the Next Steps Checklist, select “I want to live on campus (proceed to the MyHousing Portal).” 4. From the home page of the MyHousing portal, click on the “Applications” tab and select the housing request and deposit application. Please note that you are required to make a $250 non-refundable housing deposit, at the time of application, using a credit card.

Living-Learning Communities (LLC)
Southern offers a number of living-learning communities and themed housing, which provide students the opportunity to reside with other students who share their specific interests. Students who wish to live in an LLC must meet the eligibility requirements for the particular residence hall and select the LLC within their regular housing application. Students requesting to live in the Honors LLC must be accepted into the Honors College at the time of application.
Meal Plans
Southern offers a wide variety of dining options for students. Residents in traditional rooms without kitchens will be assigned the default full meal plan. Residents in kitchenequipped rooms (Brownell, Schwartz, North Campus) will be assigned the default block meal plan. Please visit the Dining Services website at SouthernCT. edu for more information.
Residential students meet more diverse people and are exposed to a wide range of ideas and cultures. Our Living-Learning communities are specifically designed to ensure such experiences. 5

Brownell Hall offers suite-style living for four or six students in double-occupancy bedrooms; each suite includes a bathroom, living room, and pantry. Some suites also include a kitchen, and all rooms are air-conditioned. Residents have access to open study spaces, a TV lounge/video game room and kitchen area on the third floor; pool and foosball tables; and laundry on the first floor. Brownell residents who live in a suite without a kitchen are required to purchase a full meal plan. Farnham Hall is a traditional on-campus residence hall with double-occupancy rooms and community bathrooms. The North Campus Residence Complex includes both the large Midrise building and the individual Townhouse units. Upper-class students can request four-person accommodations in either the Midrise or the Townhouses, both of which feature carpeting, air conditioning, storage spaces, and full kitchens. A community quiet study area and the North Campus computer lab are located on the first floor of the Midrise; both spaces are accessible to Midrise and Townhouse residents. Laundry facilities are located on each floor in the Midrise as well, and the firstfloor Marketplace serves as a convenience store for all Southern students. Students living in on-campus apartments with a kitchen are required to purchase a per-semester block meal plan.

Schwartz Hall offers housing accommodations for upperclassmen in two-, three- or four- and five- or six-person apartments. All apartments are furnished and feature carpeting, air conditioning, storage space, and full kitchens. A community lounge is available on the first floor, and several campus resources are located within the building: the Office of Residence Life; the Violence Prevention, Victim Advocacy and Support Center (VPAS); and the Wellness Center. Student Involvement At Southern, we strongly encourage student involvement and believe that active students are more likely to succeed academically and professionally. The university offers over 100 clubs and organizations to meet students’ individual interests, including sororities and fraternities; leadership and service organizations; honor societies; religious organizations; and intramural and club sports. The Residence Hall Association (RHA) represents residential students; serves as a forum for student questions and concerns; and offers intellectual, social, and cultural programs throughout the academic year. Proceeds from vending machines within the residence halls helps to support residential programming. Hall Council is the governing body within each residence hall community. Members plan social, cultural, and educational programs and represent their hall communities in the larger Residence Hall Association. There are also a number of open-recreation spaces on campus including both indoor and outdoor tracks and basketball courts and an indoor swimming pool.
Residential students develop strong interpersonal skills and are more likely to develop a healthy self-esteem. 26

Academic Success Buley Library is an excellent resource for on-campus students, offering print and electronic resources, quiet study rooms, a computer lab, and much more. Additional computer labs are available across campus and within several of the residence halls. All computer labs are free; there is a small fee for printing. The Office of Residence Life, in partnership with the SCSU Academic Success Center, also offers tutoring and quiet study hours in the Farnham Programming Space.
Residential students are more likely to graduate and enter graduate school. They also typically finish college in less time and interact more frequently with faculty and fellow students than their commuting peers. 28
Campus Dining Southern offers a number of dining options, including an all-you-can eat facility, Connecticut Hall; both on-campus Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks locations; and several other food vendors in the Adanti Student Center. Small markets are available in Engleman and Davis Halls, two academic buildings, and a convenience store is located on the first floor of North Campus. Southern’s dining facilities strive to provide healthy options, including allergen-free products, and our dining services team works diligently to meet all students’ individual dietary needs.

Transportation and Community Amenities Southern offers on-campus parking and numerous other transportation options for residents, including shuttle bus services (which circulate on campus and follow routes to the New Haven-Union train station, Connecticut Post Mall, and the Hamden Plaza), the Zipcar car rental program, the U-Pass, and the R.I.D.E.S. program. These options provide students with ample opportunities to explore the surrounding communities and the many social, cultural, and educational amenities available in downtown New Haven and Hamden.

Safety/Security Student safety and security is one of our highest priorities. All residence halls feature a welcome desk staffed 24/7 during the regular academic semester with an attendant who registers guests, serves as an information source, and monitors the safety of the lobby. Most Residence Life locations also have 24-hour video surveillance, and all buildings are fully equipped with sprinkler and alarm systems.
