Schlitz Audubon Nature Center conserves our land’s diverse habitats on Lake Michigan and provides meaningful experiences and environmental education for all.

Thank you for treasuring nature! You, our donors, are a vital part of all that we accomplish here at Schlitz Audubon. Thank you for your dedication and support of our mission for 50 years! Over the past year, we commemorated half a century in the community by embarking on new land restoration efforts and enhancing the nature-based education programs that you have come to expect from the Center over the last five decades.

Aliah Berman, Board President and Helen Boomsma, Executive Director

As you will read in the following pages, our accomplishments this past year poignantly illustrate how so many in our community treasure the celebration and stewardship of nature. With donor and volunteer support, we have restored a degraded corner of our property into a rare and thriving southern hardwood swamp ecosystem. These four and a half acres will provide plentiful food and cover for migrating birds and high-quality habitat for several bumble bee species and other pollinators. Through the creation of a forest preschool classroom, we now offer our youngest learners experiential opportunities to engage with nature on an even deeper level. The Secret Forest is a fully outdoor, year-round learning space that uses the magic of nature to teach essential skills as we prepare these children for kindergarten and beyond. The heart of our hiking experience, the Central Wetlands Loop takes visitors on a journey of vistas: some familiar, some new. Featuring diverse habitats, this trail traverses through wetlands, forests, ravine, and prairie. Over the course of the next year, we will continue to enhance this loop with wheelchair friendly surfaces. Our new comprehensive wayfinding signs ensure that visitors confidently navigate their way through our complex trail system. These signs also indicate ecosystem type, trail distance, and surrounding areas of interest. We are happy to share that for the fourth consecutive year, we have received four stars from Charity Navigator, their highest rating. Thank you for entrusting Schlitz Audubon with your generous support and helping us continue our work throughout the seasons. We hope you continue to join us in treasuring nature as we embark upon our next 50 years.

Treasuring Nature | Restoring a Hardwood Swamp

T

his past year, community support transformed a formerly unremarkable four and a half acres of Center land into a powerhouse habitat of immense ecological value. The emerging habitat, called

southern hardwood swamp, was uncommon in this region even prior to European settlement. Today less than 1% of natural areas in southeastern Wisconsin can be classified as this habitat type. Hardwood swamp and other wetlands benefit many species that are experiencing population decline due to habitat loss. Structurally diverse, hardwood swamps contain numerous microhabitats that many species depend upon. Bird species like Golden-winged Warbler favor understory thickets typical of a swamp, utilizing the cover and plentiful insects they provide. Hardwood swamp is also specifically associated with locally rare bird species such as Rusty Blackbird, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, and Yellow-crowned Night Heron—a species not yet recorded at Schlitz Audubon. In addition to birds, the restored hardwood swamp understory will support many pollinator species, including rusty patched bumble bee, the only federally endangered species known to occur at Schlitz Audubon, and monarch butterfly. Other species associated with hardwood swamp of particular conservation interest at the Center include Blanding’s turtle and northern long-eared bat. Integration of significant habitat types is important to Schlitz Audubon. After careful assessment of the Center’s 256 stands, the land management team prioritized these acres for restoration. Our volunteers and staff were able to begin work in this area in fall 2020 thanks to major support from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, as well as gifts from individual donors. The first task was planting native wildflowers, such as wild bergamot and black-eyed Susan. Next came shrubs, like silky dogwood, winterberry, and nannyberry. Tree installation is currently ongoing, and includes species partial to wetter habitats, such as swamp white oak and American sycamore. When finished, volunteers and the Center’s land management team will have planted more than 24,000 plants in the project area, in addition to having dispersed several pounds of seed.

As it matures, this rare habitat will attract an increasing diversity of species well into the future.

Treasuring Nature | The Secret Forest Classroom

T

he Secret Forest is our first preschool classroom intended to foster a completely outdoor educational experience. Protected by the tower, surrounded by stately conifers, and calmed

by the sounds of Lake Michigan’s waves, this immersion in nature makes the Secret Forest classroom an ideal location for our early childhood nature-based curriculum. Each of the four outdoor classrooms at the Center retain unique characteristics that inspire different types of play. Children in the Secret Forest are clearly inspired to climb and build as they learn and play together. The old limbs of spruce trees make a perfect ladder, and fallen limbs make fantastic structures. Teachers notice that students feel secure in the space, and with this security comes the drive to explore more—just the sort of confidence teachers say sets children up to excel in kindergarten. Patterned after a forest school, our Secret Forest classroom is a place of adventure, discovery, and imagination. Through interaction and play, it is a unique and experiential place to learn about math and science, explore art and crafts, and develop language and social skills. Equally important, it fosters a love and respect for nature among our youngest learners! In response to increased demand, the Secret Forest classroom was created last year to accommodate additional early learners. Though not originally designed to be permanent, students’ enjoyment of the space made it clear that the Secret Forest classroom had staying power. Thanks to the generosity of the community, over this past spring and summer, the Center started replacing temporary fixtures in the space with more durable elements: secure fencing, lasting play structures, and new educational equipment. Looking ahead, the success of the Secret Forest has spurred new ideas. The Center’s education team has decided that during the 2022-2023 school year, one preschool class out of the four will be offered as a fully outdoor experience, even as a return to indoor classrooms becomes the norm. In the years ahead, a K4 fully outdoor forest class will be offered in addition to our current Nature Preschool offerings.

Together we transform challenges into opportunities to innovate, learn, and grow our educational programs.

Treasuring Nature | The Central Wetlands Loop

S

ix miles of trails meander across Schlitz Audubon’s 185 acres, yet large pockets of land remain unexplored. From a conservation standpoint, this is intentional. Key habitats, like ephemeral

ponds, are left undisturbed to ensure that sensitive breeding amphibians and other aquatic organisms can thrive. This fact was front of mind as we made some changes to the trails this year, the biggest of which was the creation of the Central Wetlands Loop. The modified trails in this section maintain the integrity of key wetlands while providing enhanced access. As its name implies, the Central Wetlands Loop is a fundamental part of the Schlitz Audubon experience. At nearly one mile, the loop combines familiar segments with new treasures to traverse a diverse selection of habitats. This large trail loop is easy to find and simple to navigate, yet still produces awe-inspiring natural experiences and inspiring educational opportunities. The Central Wetlands Loop takes visitors to both ephemeral and permanent ponds. It meanders over Teal Pond, Molly’s Pond, and Mystery Lake and includes a connecting trail to Dragonfly Pond. Each of these wetlands is unique: Mystery Lake is a haven for turtles, frogs, and waterfowl. Teal Pond is an insect sanctuary. Both Molly’s Pond and Dragonfly Pond, created only two years ago as a part of our Stormwater Wetland and Ravine Restoration Project, are flourishing with aquatic plants like pickerelweed, arrowhead, and marsh marigold. Prairie habitats are also well-represented on the loop. Oak savannah invites visitors to become immersed in rippling waves of bluestem grasses, goldenrods, asters, and sunflowers during the growing season, or to appreciate beautiful wide expanses of fresh-fallen snow during winter months. Forested habitats on the Central Wetlands Loop offer a peaceful retreat. Hikers experience southern mesic forest habitats in all their splendor with cathedral-like canopies of oak, basswood, and maple. In spring, native woodland ephemerals herald the return of new life. Walking along the rim of the North Ravine, visitors have a birds-eye view of some of the highest quality forested Lake Michigan ravine habitat remaining in Milwaukee County.

We look forward to delighting visitors for decades to come by presenting new pathways to explore diverse habitats.

Treasuring Nature | New Wayfinding at the Center

V

isitor experience is one of the pillars of our mission, and we continually look for ways to enhance every aspect of a visit to the Center. With an increasing number of hikers and

ever-expanding trail network, we decided to undertake a comprehensive Wayfinding Project last year to ensure that all visitors can easily navigate our trails. Accomplishing this was a large undertaking. Work began with analysis of our trails to see how they flowed together, which led to the creation of more clearly defined loops and connector trails. Trail and pond names were also updated to indicate what visitors might find there. Boardwalk Pond became Turtle Pond, North Pond is now Wood Duck Pond, and Bird Blind Pond became Mink Pond. As the heart of our trail system, the Central Wetlands Loop earns its name as it wanders past myriad wet habitats. The bisecting Gateway Trail provides a direct route to the western part of our property. The next step was the most impactful part of the project: the creation of new wayfinding signage. The first comprehensive trail sign system in our Center’s 50-year history, this undertaking was made possible thanks to generous funding from Margarete and David Harvey. Designed and installed by staff, we were able to create signs that give visitors more direction on our trails while maintaining a natural aesthetic. Now, trailhead signs at significant starting points help visitors plan their hike by giving detailed trail information, indicating accessibility, length, habitat, and key destinations along the route. At most intersections and ponds, informational posts remind visitors which trail they are on, and indicate key destination points with arrows. Trail maps with “You are here” markers have been strategically placed across our 185 acres to help visitors to pinpoint their location. Finally, at places like the Water Tower, educational signs impart rich information about these unique spots on our land.

By enhancing visitors' ability to navigate our trails, we hope to create a deeper connection with nature for all.
