Thank you for helping us expand opportunities for our community! You, our donors, are an integral part of all we do here at Schlitz Audubon. We cannot thank you enough for your passion and dedication to our mission. Your support ensures that we do the best we can by our land and our people. We have the unique opportunity to carefully and deliberately create habitats of the highest

Aliah Berman, Board President and Helen Boomsma, Executive Director

possible quality here at Schlitz Audubon, and

to serve as a model for regional restoration work. This land, and the stewardship of it, in turn provides the backbone of our innovative education experiences. It also provides a beautiful, abundant setting where any visitor can just relax and enjoy nature. As you read the following pages, you’ll see how the special connections between our objectives of conservation, education, and experience are reflected in each of our highlight pieces: Summer Nature Experiences light a spark of passion in the youth who will become Earth’s future champions. Rare Habitat Restoration shows how work in our wet prairie is providing a unique opportunity for visitors to witness high-quality habitat and learn why its existence is crucial. Nature-Based Learning Leaders highlights how our teaching philosophy—that young children learn best through inquiry and play in nature—is growing beyond the Center to inspire educators throughout the region. Finally, Enriching Animal Encounters illustrates how we’re even improving habitats indoors to provide meaningful new experiences for visitors. Your support, by giving us room to grow and thrive, allowed us to take our mission to the next level during the 2019 fiscal year. We’re looking forward to an amazing 2020!

Expanding Opportunities | Summer Nature Experiences

S

chlitz Audubon summer programming provides educational, physical, and social enrichment that keeps children engaged during their break from school. What’s better than catching frogs, paddling

a canoe, or hunting for fossils on the beach? Thanks to the support of our generous donors and community partnerships, Schlitz Audubon works with organizations like the Boys & Girls Club and Milwaukee Public Schools to serve students from across the economic spectrum throughout the summer months. Engaging with nature creates memories that will last a lifetime. Imagine a child’s excitement when looking eye to eye with a screech owl, or climbing our 60-foot observation tower to get what is sometimes a first-ever glimpse of Lake Michigan. During our Boys & Girls Club summer camp week, 25 children ranging in ages from four to 10 partake in such pivotal experiences. For these kids, summer visits to Schlitz Audubon are more than just fun: they also provide a boost to students’ mental and physical development and increase their overall positive attitude toward the outdoors. Our collaboration with Milwaukee Public Schools Summer Academy offers another opportunity to reach more children from throughout the community. A free program for City of Milwaukee students, we offer camp-like learning experiences that help students retain skills they might otherwise lose during summer break. We keep students busy, engaged, and enthusiastic by featuring a different theme every week, such as pond life or geology. Not all of our summer fun takes place at Schlitz Audubon. A special subset of Summer Academy students are part of the MPS Extended School Year (ESY) program, through which students with specific needs experience programs that help them maintain academic skills gained during the year. We work with children who have visual, cognitive, auditory, and other impairments in a comfortable setting to foster tactile learning—feeling the texture of turtle shells, examining the differences between feathers of different bird species, and smelling summer flowers. Between on-site and off-site programming, Schlitz Audubon facilitates nearly 900 student experiences through Summer Academy. Thanks to a special grant from Herb Kohl Philanthropies and other donors to our education programs, transformative summer opportunities are available for many of the students who need them most. Every kid deserves to experience Schlitz Audubon during this special season!

Your generosity impacts hundreds of students by fostering summer learning experiences at Schlitz Audubon.

Expanding Opportunities | Rare Habitat Restoration

W

e intentionally measure every conservation action we take at Schlitz Audubon by the impact it will have in the decades to come. Careful stewardship of our unique habitats both ensures

their long-term health and helps educate the next generations of those who will care for them. The establishment of our wet prairie is a prime example of this philosophy at work. Visitors traversing our new 1,570-foot Gateway Trail have the unique opportunity to witness a wet prairie, one of Wisconsin’s rarest habitats. Once abundant, this habitat type has been reduced to less than one percent of its original footprint across the state. The Gateway Trail is entered off our parking area, making this special habitat extremely easy to access. Observation of wet prairie in our region was previously much harder to accomplish: the next closest example is nearly 50 miles from the Center. With the new trail, our prairie can be accessed by anybody—whether on foot, stroller, or wheelchair—in mere minutes. The Gateway Trail was intentionally designed for easy access while still maintaining the integrity of the ecosystem. After a wetland delineation in 2017, it was determined that 23 acres, or about 16% of Center habitat, is wetland. Visitors can recognize that they’re traveling through wetland by the presence of boardwalks. These help prevent disturbance to sensitive plant and animal populations while providing an elevated view of our distinctive habitats. The boardwalk view of the wet prairie is spectacular, showcasing a mass of tall sedges and grasses punctuated by plants associated with wetter habitats, like Joe Pye Weed, Boneset, and Turtlehead. Ongoing restoration will continue to increase its splendor in years to come. This year alone, staff and volunteers installed 4,000 plants throughout the prairie, like Glade Mallow, Prairie Violet, and Swamp Milkweed, that will attract and sustain the native pollinators that rely on them. Thanks to our many conservation project funders, transformations like this one are occurring across the Center. Together we will restore and protect Wisconsin’s natural heritage for generations to come.

Your generosity allows the Center to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of all of our diverse habitats.

Expanding Opportunities | Nature-Based Learning Leaders

O

ne of our most important objectives as an environmental education organization is to spark children’s curiosity about the natural world. We can ensure that this spark ignites and contin-

ues to grow by providing teachers with tools to effectively integrate hands-on environmental education into their everyday classrooms. Our dual philosophy of supporting both students and teachers in environmental education informs our teaching methodology for students of all ages. Through our Urban Outreach Program, a preschool partnership with Next Door Milwaukee and Malaika Early Learning Center, we not only provide nature programming for students, but also one-on-one interactions with educators. Through face-to-face planning meetings with teachers we evaluate the effectiveness of our programs, discuss curriculum, and brainstorm ways we might bring more nature into school classrooms. At the elementary level, our on-site field trips and in-school assembly programs are designed to correlate to Next Generation Science Standards and meet STEM requirements. These programs, on topics including Lake Michigan, birds of prey, and other subjects, complement and enhance grade-specific science curriculums. Before- and after-program study materials assist teachers in further meeting their required science standards. Our involvement with the nature-based education movement also extends beyond our own unique offerings. In 2018, Catherine Koons-Hubbard, our Nature Preschool Director, founded the Wisconsin Nature-Based Early Childhood Association (WiNBECA) as a collaborative of educators and administrators working in nature-based early-childhood education. This group provides resources for those looking to start their own nature-based programs, as well as for those wishing to incorporate more nature into their existing curricula. We’re also proud to have received a 2019 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools award, earned for our leadership in providing hands-on learning and environmental literacy for early childhood. Thanks to our donors, more students, both here at Schlitz Audubon and throughout the greater Milwaukee community, are establishing a life-long affinity for nature. Donor support of our educational program gives us the flexibility to take a holistic approach to teaching, and allows us to lead from the forefront of the environmental education movement as nature-based early childhood education expands nationwide.

Your generosity helps establish Schlitz Audubon as a leader in nature education! 7

Expanding Opportunities | Enriching Animal Encounters

W

e strive to provide exceptional experiences for visitors to deepen their relationships with nature and to cultivate future stewards of the natural world. Our Animal Ambassadors are

central to these efforts, and over the past year, we are excited to have initiated a comprehensive plan to enrich and enlarge our animals’ presence in the Great Hall. By providing new, state-of-the-art housing and more opportunities to interact directly with the animals, we are significantly increasing learning opportunities for visitors. Animals are sensitive to changes in their environments and are an important gauge of the health of the ecosystems we all share. As part of our education team, they help us provide information about habitat concerns and other issues facing many species today. Though we’re in the first phases of implementation, big changes have already taken place. Thanks to an anonymous donor, the Center’s beloved Snapping Turtle, Emerson, has a new home! At 530 gallons—nearly double the size of his previous tank—Emerson’s new digs feature a river rock substrate, a boulder-like basking platform, and a waterfall filter system. By mimicking a natural environment, we’re providing Emerson with a healthy, enriching habitat, while also giving visitors a better look at the behavior of his wild counterparts. Over the course of the year, visitors have also had more opportunities to interact with our entire Animal Ambassador team in the Great Hall. In 2018, volunteers spent 675 hours fostering personal interactions between our animals and nearly 10,000 visitors! Today, a visit to our Great Hall can include feeling the smooth skin of one of our Corn Snakes, getting face-to-face with Boxy the Box Turtle, or marveling over our Blue-tongued Skink, Grover. These initiatives have brought renewed energy to our Great Hall, and there are more exciting changes to come. The majority of our Animal Ambassadors currently spend their "off" hours in a private location, but our goal is to increase each animal’s visibility by building each a healthy habitat in public view. More than 100,000 visitors pass through our Great Hall annually, and the bolstered presence of our ambassadors will give us ample opportunities to spark engagement between humans and animals each year.

Your generosity provides quality habitats for our Animal Ambassadors and increases our capacity to educate visitors.
