Thank you for helping us grow stronger! The 2018 fiscal year was one of marked growth for the Center, and we couldn’t have achieved our accomplishments without the extraordinary support of our donors and volunteers. In the following pages you’ll see how your contributions catalyzed this growth and the many program areas impacted by your efforts. Our environmental education programs

Aliah Berman, Board President Elect and Helen Boomsma, Executive Director

now reach more youth, because we nearly doubled the number of students served through our scholarship program. Our Citizen Scientists are gathering more data on plant and animal populations at the Center as we expanded the number of staff-directed projects. A new accessible trail draws visitors toward Mystery Pond, and a beautiful boardwalk spans the entire expanse of the water. A Barred Owl named Perseus, the newest addition to our Raptor Program, now educates the public both at the Center and throughout the community about the vital role birds of prey play in our ecosystem. In tandem with this growth, we are also always keeping an eye to the future. To complete the year, we developed and implemented a new strategic plan that will harness and guide our momentum moving forward. The Trails to Innovation: 2018-2022 Strategic Plan builds upon the strong foundation that we’ve established over the years and articulates a clear vision of growth for the next five. It also renews our commitment to our time-tested mission of conservation, environmental education, and accessibility to nature for all. With a plan in place to guide us—and the community to support us—we look forward to our next chapter.

Aliah Berman Board President Elect

Helen Boomsma Executive Director 1

Growing Stronger | Student Scholarships

O

ur scholarship program has long been an impact area near to the hearts of many of our donors. Scholarship students attend schools where an average of 85% of households are considered

economically disadvantaged, and their communities often offer little green space and few outdoor play areas. Sharing the Center with children who might not otherwise have the chance to experience our educational programs is a key part of our mission. During the 2017-2018 school year we decided to amplify our reach to serve even more students. In the past, scholarships were only made available for field trip visits, and with finite classroom space and a busy team of educators, we knew that scheduling more programs on site wasn’t an option. Our golden opportunity, instead, was to take our educators into the community. Today, our scholarship program includes field trips here at the Center, assembly programs that take place right at schools for elementary students, as well as offsite hiking adventures—with transportation included—at state natural areas for high school students. Last year, our first year of expanded programming, we nearly doubled our reach by serving 4,800 students as compared with 2,600 the year before. None of this would be possible without the support of our generous donors. Several funders underwrite scholarship programming as a whole, while others choose to focus their support on schools within specific neighborhoods. The Johnson Controls Foundation, a long-time supporter of our scholarship program, uses a place-based approach to philanthropy and engagement called the Milwaukee Neighborhood Initiative to guide their scholarship giving. The Foundation’s goal is to transform three challenged Milwaukee neighborhoods in close proximity to their Glendale headquarters, and we use their support to provide specific programming for more than 800 students who attend schools within this area. Collaborations like these are integral to the health of our expanding scholarship program, and we will ensure our efforts remain relevant and in-tune with the priorities of the community. Thanks to our expansion efforts, our educators get to work with more students, as well as take part in the revitalization efforts occurring in so many Milwaukee neighborhoods.

Your generosity has given nature experiences to more youth in the Milwaukee community.

Growing Stronger | Raptor Program

S

chlitz Audubon’s Raptor Program was established in 1987, and the support of the donor and volunteer community has played a vital role in keeping the program growing and thriving since

day one. Our partnership with the We Energies Foundation, the premiere supporter of the Raptor Program, dates back to early 2000 when they generously sponsored our monthly Raptor Saturday events, which are still going strong today. With such steadfast support, our Raptor Program has grown to become the most comprehensive in the Midwest. The 17 birds in our program, including our newest, a Barred Owl named Perseus, are all non-releasable. Each of their unique experiences have made them reliant upon humans for survival, and they can no longer live safely in the wild. We’re lucky to have them, because these birds have a big job! Collectively, they reach 50,000 people every year by starring in more than 350 educational programs that take place across the region in classrooms, libraries, museums, and at outdoor events like Wisconsin State Fair. Of all our birds’ endeavors, the eleven-day run of the State Fair is by far the opportunity with the greatest reach, and another testament to the power of We Energies support. Thousands of fairgoers each day are awestruck by flight demonstrations at We Energies Energy Park: Audience members come face to face with owls, compare their grip strength to that of an eagle, and witness the six-foot wingspan of Tallulah, the Turkey Vulture, as she buzzes the crowd with a fly-by. Additional up-closeand-personal meet and greet opportunities also take place throughout each day of the fair, with smaller birds such as Malary, our female American Kestrel, or Loki, our American Crow. State Fair is a lot of work for our birds and their human handlers, but every member of this team is used to logging long hours. Our three dedicated raptor staff members and 50 volunteers—an amazing group who averages 6,200 hours of service per year—provide the daily care of our birds and assist us in providing programming. It is only with their help and the help of our donors, like our long-term supporter We Energies, that we are able to reach so many people each year and to keep our birds safe, healthy, and ready to teach.

Your generosity has allowed our Raptor Program to broaden its reach.

Growing Stronger | Accessible Trails

O

ne of the central tenets of our mission is "to provide meaningful experiences and environmental education for all," and we recognize that physical access is a real barrier for many visitors

who wish to engage with nature. Over the past four years, we've been removing such barriers by converting segments of our trail system to become wheelchair friendly. The response from the community has been tremendous, and has fueled our drive to keep going. Thanks to the Elizabeth Elser Doolittle Charitable Trust, we were able to open one of our most ambitious segments to date in late 2017 with the completion of the Mystery Pond and South Ravine Accessible Trail. Branching off the Mystery Lake segment, (completed 2016), the new trail draws visitors toward Mystery Pond, and a beautiful boardwalk across the entire expanse of the water leads visitors on to experience this unique aquatic habitat at all depths. Before the new Mystery Pond and South Ravine Accessible Trail was created, the pond’s old teaching deck was becoming warped, water fluctuations had made school group access from the platform difficult, and the surrounding habitat was becoming overgrown with invasive plants. Fast forward one year, and the entire area is thriving. Ongoing restoration around the lake and pond has dramatically enhanced the health of the landscape. Invasive vegetation like buckthorn and honeysuckle has been removed, and native perennials like Zigzag Goldenrod, Viburnum, and Wild Geranium are finding a second life in a new home after having been rescued from other project areas at the Center. Today it's not uncommon to find a school group on their bellies, with nets in the water, searching for pond creatures. A bench in memory of our longtime Naturalist Jean “JP Pagel provides a resting place and a perfect vista to view dragonflies or sunning painted turtles. During winter months the pond makes for an easy cold-weather hike. Thanks to the Elizabeth Elser Doolittle Charitable Trust and many other contributors, transformations like this one are occurring across the Center. Not only does our accessible trail system continue to grow, but our ability to accommodate all members of the community also grows stronger with each and every new segment.

Your generosity has improved access for people of all ages and abilities.

Growing Stronger | Citizen Science

W

ith 185 acres of wetlands, forests, ravines, prairies, and Lake Michigan shoreline to care for, Schlitz Audubon has nearly unlimited need for citizen science data. As conservation efforts

at Schlitz Audubon become more sophisticated, these data help drive our decision making in terms of land stewardship. The better we can understand the land, the better we can work to create healthy habitats for native plant and animal populations. While citizen science isn’t new to Schlitz Audubon — birders have been keeping logs of every species seen on property since 1974 — last year we took steps to strengthen and grow our citizen science efforts by increasing the number of staff-directed programs. In the first eight months our citizen science volunteers spent more than 700 hours collecting vital population data about bats, amphibians, herbaceous plants, trees, and other species. Without these volunteers, this amount of data collection would not be possible. Some projects have very specific impacts on work performed here at the Center. For example, the federally endangered Rusty Patched Bumble Bee was found at Schlitz Audubon in summer 2017, and efforts to ascertain where the bee forages on property can help us make habitat restoration decisions to help maintain their population. Other projects are part of regional data collection efforts spearheaded by groups like Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, eBird, and Monarch Watch. The beauty of citizen science is that anyone with an interest can find a way to help. Even our preschoolers are getting in on things by keeping an eye on a rain gauge in their main play space. When the gauge tops one inch in a 48-hour period, they notify our Resource Ecologist. He heads to the ravine to perform water sampling, data that he shares with the Naitonal Fish & Wildlife Foundation. That’s big work for kids who can count their age on one hand! Our citizen scientists donate their time with other like-minded volunteers, performing a vital role. They gather data that will not only inform the work of future generations here, but also across our region.

Your generosity has provided the Center with critical data about our ecosystem.
