Cover Photo The Magnolia Warbler is one of 35 warblers that have been observed at the Center during migration, inviting discovery among bird watchers. Research on the Magnolia Warbler verified that within its genes is a map of the constellations of the Northern hemisphere, one of the tools they utilize while navigating during migration.

Preschool Urban Outreach Program. Our
new Raptor Exhibit introduces visitors to our birds of prey. Significant trail improvements ensure that everyone has access to wilderness. Our conservation efforts at Mystery Lake increase the habitat for wildlife. We take great pride in our stewardship of this land. In partnering with Schlitz Audubon, you’ve helped us create, and begin to realize, an innovative 15-year land management plan. This plan has many components, including addressing Emerald Ash Borer and reducing encroachment by invasive species. The plan also works to conserve wildlife populations of greatest need and reduce storm water impact to Lake Michigan and surrounding communities. The land is the foundation for all we do at the Center, including our nationally-recognized environmental education programming. This year we grew our reach with new afterschool, homeschool, preschool, and citizen science offerings. We also partnered with Milwaukee Public Museum to host the area’s first BioBlitz, a 24-hour species inventory completed by both scientists and volunteers. As a part of the event, families engaged with the scientists and participated in educational activities. Your generosity empowers us to create both natural and educational habitats that sustain life throughout our 185 acres. Because of you, we invite people to discover the wonderment of nature. Onward,

Inviting Discovery | Creating a Ripple Effect
N
ature provides children with some of their most profound formative experiences. From learning about shapes and colors through arranging fallen leaves, to exploring the tactile
differences between angular rocks, smooth lake stones, and wet and dry sand, nature has many lessons to teach. But what about children who may not live near a park or nature center, or aren’t able to visit natural spaces on a regular basis? Since 2009, our Preschool Urban Outreach Program has provided opportunities for early learners to enjoy nature-based experiences that they may not otherwise have. Through this program, children from low-income neighborhoods have access to forests, ponds, prairies, and Lake Michigan shoreline. Classes spend their time exploring trails with Schlitz Audubon teachers, playing outdoors, and engaging in nature. Our Preschool teachers work closely with partner educators to tailor our nature-based programs to meet the specific needs of their classes. As a result, partner teachers develop greater confidence teaching natural science topics. Center teachers also visit partner schools twice a month, bringing hands-on natural materials, books, activities, and detailed lesson plans. This helps their teachers build on, and continue, the curriculum that began while visiting Schlitz Audubon. “Now our kids are so much more comfortable in nature,” said Sandy Gadzichowski, Education Manager for Next Door’s Educare Milwaukee. “They think about nature, they talk about it, and they enjoy it.” Funding from the Herzfeld Foundation provides the opportunity for children from Malaika Early Learning Center, in Milwaukee’s Harambee neighborhood, and students from Next Door's Educare, located in the Metcalfe Park neighborhood to participate in the Preschool Urban Outreach Program. This consistent nature-based learning has a more lasting impact than occasional visits could provide. These regular nature experiences create a ripple effect where children go on to share their adventures with family and friends.

Inviting Discovery | Improving Access at Mystery Lake
M
agical. That’s how Wendy Sopkovich described the first time she was able to hike Mystery Lake with her children and grandkids.
“To be able to go on these trails, now, it’s really special,” said Wendy. “My grandchildren are very excited that I’m able to join while they lay on their tummies and see the creatures in the pond.” Wendy, pictured left, uses a powered wheelchair to get around. Prior to the boardwalk’s completion, she wasn’t able to admire the bountiful wildlife and scenic backdrop of Mystery Lake. The boardwalk was completed in June 2016, and since then, Wendy has accompanied her family hiking and exploring the trails at Schlitz Audubon. With the goal of improving access, Margarete and David Harvey issued a matching challenge grant to other potential donors to help fund the creation of the Mystery Lake Boardwalk. Forty-three generous friends responded with gifts, and together they exceeded their goal by raising more than $46,000. The result is a stunning natural wood structure that complements the contours of Mystery Lake, while linking two previously upgraded hard-packed gravel trails. With these paths connected, Schlitz Audubon can now offer visitors a wider array of wheelchair-accessible trails. Now, countless explorers of any age or ability can experience the rich hues of autumn’s multicolored palette, witness frogs sitting on lily pads, turtles sunning on logs, and geese and ducks gliding through the water. Since the boardwalk’s completion, families and individuals piloting wheelchairs, and strollers have been able to explore new trails together–or at their own pace. As for Wendy, getting out in nature with family has been an amazing adventure, while the joy of experiencing nature on her own has been equally fulfilling. She lives just a couple of miles away and visits much more often now to hike the Mystery Lake boardwalk and surrounding trails.

Inviting Discovery | Meeting Our Raptors
T
he Raptor Exhibit has quickly become one of the ways that visitors are first engaged when visiting the Center. The Exhibit is located just outside of the main building, and is an experience
unique to visiting Schlitz Audubon. Since spring, through the Raptor Exhibit, children and adults have been able to develop a connection with Sky Walker, the Center’s resident Red-tailed Hawk. Visitors, Preschoolers, and school groups stop by to watch and wave and say, “Hi Sky Walker!” “It’s such a gift to see a hawk so close,” said Sondra Salgado, a member of Schlitz Audubon. “Every time we visit, my husband, son, and I pause to watch and listen to this beautiful animal. Sky Walker is lovely.” Schlitz Audubon created the Raptor Program as a way to help educate the public about these birds of prey, and their importance to the ecosystem. The program started with one Great Horned Owl in 1987, and has grown into a nationally renowned program that has provided 31 birds with their forever home. Each of our 16 current resident raptors is not releasable to the wild, and serve as feathered ambassadors educating the community. These powerful and graceful birds make an enormous impact, providing a connection to, and an appreciation for, all wildlife and the habitat we share. Until the completion of the Raptor Exhibit, it was only during Center programs that the public was able to engage with our birds. The Raptor Exhibit, which was generously funded by the Buchanan Family Foundation, features a mesh barrier designed to appear transparent to people and raptors alike. Most raptors spend about 85% of their day perched, so the Raptor Exhibit is a safe and familiar environment for Sky Walker. Encountering Sky Walker through the Raptor Exhibit, every day from 10:00am - 3:00pm, provides visitors with a greater understanding of her wild relatives that perch along our tree tops, fence posts, and roadways, and soar above our rivers, lakes, and prairies.

Inviting Discovery | Growing Vital Habitats
P
eople come to Schlitz Audubon to experience our abundant wildlife, and one of the most treasured places to do so is Mystery Lake. Throughout the warm weather months, families visit
to spot turtles surfacing and sunning, tadpoles swimming in the shallows, and water insects jetting about. In spring, birders scope the lake for both Blue and Green-winged Teal, Wood Ducks, and Solitary Sandpipers. Part of our mission is to create habitats that attract and sustain both year-round and migratory animal populations. When muskrats burrowed through the southern bank of Mystery Lake, the leakage created by their holes threatened the entire ecosystem. As water levels dropped, so did the lake’s oxygen levels, devastating sensitive fish populations in winter. Mystery Lake was seeping through to the southern ravine, exacerbating the erosion of a vulnerable bluff. Thanks to a generous donation by the James E. Dutton Foundation, Center staff restored lake water levels by repairing the dike and adding a muskrat barrier. The project was further advanced when Wacker Neuson Corporation loaned an excavator to core and re-pack the dike, creating a less permeable barrier. Raising Mystery Lake’s water level increased the oxygen level, offering the opportunity to restore and sustain fish populations, and ensuring that more animals can survive winter. Once lake levels had been restored, installation of a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk could begin. The boardwalk now winds along Mystery Lake. Following the boardwalk’s completion, we began to transform more than 2,500 square feet of compacted, bare soil trails into native ground and shrub layers featuring species such as Zigzag Goldenrod, Viburnum, and Wild Geranium. This rejuvenation was funded in part by the James E. Dutton Foundation. The Mystery Lake restoration is part of Schlitz Audubon’s 15-year land management plan laid out by Director of Conservation Marc White, pictured left. While improving the landscape, these and many other plants provide cover for Blue-spotted Salamanders and Blanding’s Turtles, and nesting material for thrushes and other resident breeding birds.
