Thank you for improving access to the natural world! Together, we’ve improved access to nature for our members, visitors, and broader community. As you will read in the following pages, improving access manifests itself in many ways, including environmental education for all ages, and habitat for plants and animals.

You’ve improved access to nature by welcoming Milwaukee Public Schools students to explore a world only previously seen in textbooks, by helping develop a 15 year land management plan, by cultivating citizen scientists, and by building pathways that ensure nature is accessible to everyone. This year many developments took place at the Center. We’ve increased educational outreach to underserved children throughout our community. We welcomed a gray-phase Eastern Screech Owl named Baron von Screech to our Raptor Program. Our seasonal events attracted thousands of new visitors to discover Schlitz Audubon. Your support of Schlitz Audubon has always been and remains local. With our first full year under a new relationship with National Audubon Society, our organizations continue to be strategic partners, working together in the areas of education and avian conservation. We’re working hard to improve the experience of, and access to, Schlitz Audubon Nature Center for our entire community. But none of this important work is possible without you. Thank you for providing that spark of curiosity in a child’s eye, a place for birds to build a home, and the trees taking root throughout the soil.

Improving Access | Connecting Students with Nature
Q
uintessential childhood experiences include exploring the textures of leaves and tree bark, trying to catch a frog or turtle, and watching a butterfly open and close its wings atop an aster.
This summer, for the first time, Schlitz Audubon participated in the Milwaukee Public Schools’ Summer Academy, providing both classic summer experiences and environmental education to MPS students. This program creates a bridge between grades, reinforcing the previous year’s lessons and previewing the coming year’s material. The five week Summer Academy included four weeks in the classroom followed by a weeklong Summer Adventure at Schlitz Audubon. What an adventure it was! Students explored Lake Michigan’s aquatic life and the geology of rocks along the shore. The eternal question, “Why is grass green?” was answered by learning about photosynthesis in plants. They explored the significance of pollinators and other insects throughout the prairie. Witnessing pollen stuck to a bee’s legs, or holding a sedimentary rock next to a metamorphic rock made the textbook come to life. Time on the trails enhanced their classroom learning. According to MPS Superintendent Dr. Darienne Driver, “Keeping students learning over the summer with engaging programs is mission critical to help them prepare for the year ahead. It also helps fight summer learning loss, which is the tendency for students to lose some of the progress they made in the previous year during the summer.” Our participation addresses both of these goals. The Summer Adventure is just one component of our ongoing partnership with Milwaukee Public Schools. Schools within the district visit our Center more than any other district and receive the largest number of our scholarships. Through our scholarship program, we were able to provide our innovative programming to children from schools where at least 60% of the students live at or below the poverty line. Our reach extends beyond the city of Milwaukee. This past year, our school programming reached 153 schools in nine counties. Many schools are able to get a comprehensive look at nature by participating in multiple programs throughout the seasons.

Improving Access | Creating Crucial Habitat
B
ehind the prairies, forest, ponds, and shoreline, a dedicated team is hard at work ensuring our land’s natural beauty. This year Schlitz Audubon’s new Director of Conservation Marc White,
created a 15 year land management plan for the property. To do so, he divided our 185 acres into 256 stands. An inventory of each stand, consisting of the canopy, sub-canopy, shrub, and ground layers, was taken to develop a strategy to increase the habitat’s biotic diversity. The plan was created to both restore the existing natural areas and improve visitors' access to our ecological bounty. More than 2,000 trees and shrubs will be planted by the end of 2015 to both increase forest diversity and offset future canopy loss due to Emerald Ash Borer. Being situated above Lake Michigan, storm water erosion is a constant threat to the Center’s bluffs and ravines. Two of the seven major challenges indentified in the new land management plan involve storm water impacts. This year Schlitz Audubon received a $60,000 planning grant from the Fund for Lake Michigan to develop a water management and land remediation plan. The current land plan includes a trail plan that will intercept and filter overland flow and capture storm water runoff in a series of shallow trail side ponds. Throughout the year volunteer land stewards, staff, interns, corporate partners, and an AmeriCorps crew worked to control established infestations of several invasive species, including Dame’s Rocket, Garlic Mustard, Buckthorn, and Reed Canary Grass. In the past year, volunteers donated more than 10,000 hours to improving the Center’s land and providing space to conserve and reestablish native species. Marc envisions that 15 years from now visitors will experience a more biotically and visually diverse landscape with rich, intelligible layers. Because of your support, the land will invite people in and offer a sense of mystery. We’re not only making a better space for humans to visit, we’re creating crucial habitat for native plant and animal species to flourish.

Improving Access | Growing Citizen Scientists
M
aple seeds tumble from tree branches and fall to the soil. If they break open, they can take root. Like Maple trees, our new Master Naturalist Course has sprouted a forest of citizen
scientists throughout our community. The main goal of this bold, year-long course is to create citizen scientists who go into their communities and teach others about the natural world. Inspired naturalists can become life-changing mentors for future generations. Led by Senior Ecologist Don Quintenz and Director of Conservation Marc White, the course participants gained access to these educators' over 80 combined years of conservation and teaching experience. Participants already had enthusiasm for nature—the course teaches how to knowledgeably pass on this exuberance. This course turned the outdoors into a living classroom, with most classes being conducted at Schlitz Audubon. Instead of sitting in a lecture hall looking at illustrations of birds, students learned how to identify birds through their binoculars on the trails. Instead of being handed a sample in a lab, students put on hip waders and collected their own in the Milwaukee River. Instead of studying a field guide to learn about flower identification, students collected and dissected their own specimens to learn the parts of a flower and its family relationship. To help get a comprehensive look at what Wisconsin has to offer, students took insightful journeys to places such as Lulu Lake, Cedarburg Bog, and Horicon Marsh. Joanna Demas, pictured left, is already putting this knowledge to work as Land Manager for River Revitalization Foundation. “I’ve been utilizing all the citizen science surveying we’ve been doing in this course as a way to measure and report out on the success of restoration goals in my organization’s grants.” Another participant, Kate Parent, pictured right, is excited to take what she has learned into her community. “We can put into action what we have gained over this year by becoming citizen scientists, sharing this passion with others, pursuing further observations, and independent voluntary research.” Course graduates can pass on their knowledge and enthusiasm to other budding naturalists.

Improving Access | Building Pathways for Everyone
M
ystery Lake offers a biotically diverse environment, showcasing pond life, vibrant flowers, and a spectrum of bird species from shorebirds to hawks. Until now, not everyone could witness
this wide range of wildlife at Mystery Lake. This year, a portion of the trails surrounding the lake have been renovated to become ADA accessible, allowing more visitors in wheelchairs and with walkers to experience nature here. In the future, the two trails will be joined by a boardwalk, providing teaching spaces and even more access. Susan Winters, pictured, said, “I am so thankful that Schlitz Audubon Nature Center has more accessible paths for those of us that would otherwise be unable to enjoy this beautiful and special place!” These current and future additions were made possible thanks to the generosity of the Elizabeth Elser Doolittle Charitable Trusts, Margarete and David Harvey, and many donors who gave because of a challenge grant initiated by the Harveys. The environmentally-friendly path is made out of a durable, locally quarried rock mixture. These trails offer optimum water absorption, mitigating the impact of rain on ravines, bluffs, and surrounding flora. Meeting both goals of land stewardship and access for visitors, these enhanced trails are connecting people with nature in a whole new way. Another benefit of these trails has been discovered by parents with young children and elderly visitors, who find the surface helpful when hiking with a child in a stroller. Striving to provide a more inclusive natural space where everyone can engage their passion for the outdoors is intrinsic to our mission. We're excited to share a greater portion of our land with more visitors, and to expand everyone’s access to the outdoors!

2014-2015 Financial Summary Friends of Schlitz Audubon Nature Center has completed its first year of operation as a stand-alone entity under a ground lease and management contract with National Audubon Society. Under these agreements, the land and buildings remain the property of National but the local board of directors has legal independence and fiduciary responsibility for the Center and its employees. In the past, Schlitz Audubon presented financial statements for both the locally-controlled Friends organization and for subsidiary operations of National. Due to the new relationship, this annual report and those going forward will include the financial performance and standing for only the Friends.
