bitants of St. Domingo. T h e adherents of the ancient government were joined on this occafion by the partizans of de­ mocracy and republicanifm. T o the latter, the conflitution of 1789 was even more odious than the old tyranny; and thefe men, with the deepest and darkeft designs, poffeffed all that union, firmnefs, and perfeverance which were neceffary to their purpofes; and which, as the world has beheld, have fince ren­ dered them irrefiftible. Thefe two factions hoped to obtain very different ends, by the fame means; and there was another party who exerted themfelves with equal affiduity in promoting publick confusion : thefe were the difcordant clafs of fpeculative reformers, whom it was impoffible to reconcile to the new government, becaufe every man among them h a d probably formed a favourite fyftem in his own imagination which he was eager to recommend to others. I do not confider the philanthropick fociety, called Amis des Noirs, as another diftinct body, becaufe it appears to me that they w e r e p r e t t y e q u a l l y d i v i d e d between the democratick party, and the clafs laft mentioned. Strengthened by fuch auxiliaries, it is not furprizing that the efforts of this fociety fhould have operated powerfully on the minds of thofe who were taught to confider their perfonal wrongs as the caufe of the nation, and have driven fome of them into the wildeft exceffes of fanaticifm and fury. fuch of thefe unfortunate people refident in France as were thus inflamed into madnefs, was a young man under thirty years of age, named James Ogé: h e was born i n St. D o ­ mingo, of a mulatto woman who ftill poffefTed a coffee planta­ tion in the Northern province, about thirty miles from Cape François, AMONG
