Expedition in the « Fram » 1898-1902 under Otto Sverdrup 1. These territorial claims (Sverdrup 1903) were not followed by diplomatic notifications. Sverdrup Islands have later on come under Canada's control by the establishment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Ellesmere Land. Norway officially recognized Canada's sovereignty of Sverdrup Islands by a royal decree of Dec. 19, 1930. NORWEGIAN

ANTARCTIC

INTERESTS.

In connection with the development and expansion of the modern whaling industry (described by Risting 1922, Rsestad 1928, Isachsen 1929, Aagaard 1930), Norway has also in recent years acquired political interests in the Antarctic. Bouvet Island : The little, ice-covered Bouvet Island (54°26'S. Lat., 3°24' E. Long.), was taken in possession for Norway by the first « Norvegia » — expedition 2 on Dec. I, 1927, and Norway's sovereignty was officially proclaimed by a royal decree of Jan. 23, 1928. On Nov. 19, 1928, the British government communicated that it had no objection to the Norwegian proclamation of sovereignty of Bouvet Island. Particulars about the occupation are found in Aagaard 1930, vol. 2, and Ræstad 1929. Peter I Island : The second « Norvegia » — expedition succeeded in landing on Peter I Island (68° 50' S. Lat., 90° 35' W. Long., SW of Graham Land) on Feb. 2, 1929, whereby the island was annexed in the name of the King of Norway (Aagaard 1930, vol. 2). It was officially submitted to Norwegian sovereignty by a royal decree of May I, 1931. Antarctic continent : Norway is also politically interested in the territories on the Antarctic continent explored by 1. Scientific results in four volumes under the title of Report of the Second Norwegian Arctic Expedition in the « Fram » 1898-1902. 2. The scientific results are being successively published by the Norwegian Academy of Sciences in Oslo under the litle of : Scientific Results of the Norwegian Antarctic Expeditions 1927-1931, instituted and financed by Consul Lars Christensen.
