and Afrikaans, that occasionally contain communications of interest in relation to such subjects, which have, of course, a very lively importance in the Union. There are only two universities in the colonies proper of the British Empire, — the University of Malta and the University of Hong Kong. Malta naturally fills a special position and the work of its scholars is rather directed to the interesting archives of the island and their background of European history than to anything properly included in Colonial history. The study of history by the Chinese students in Hong Kong is as yet comparatively rudimentary. The two university colleges in the colonies, University College, Colombo, Ceylon and Raffles University College, Singapore,? Malaya do not grant degrees but present their students for the degree examinations of the University of London and are therefore governed by its curricula. There is no organised study of colonial history as such, but in Ceylon an increasing amount of attention is being given to the early history of the island. Gordon College at Khartum in the AngloEgyptian Sudan is not strictly a university College and it has no specialised historical studies. Endeavours are now being made especially in West and East Africa and Zanzibar to encourage the study of the history of each colony to provide a basis for the education of the natives in the history of their own countries. This work, however, is solely concerned with education in the schools and it cannot be said that as yet there is any general consensus of opinion as to what these local histories should include. Few expert scholars have yet taken part in the discussions, but they are a sign of an increasing interest in the subject and may ultimately lead to an encouragement of serious research. A. P.
