The publication was started 1879 and contains an immense number of original treatises on the geography, natural history, ethnology, and history of Greenland, written by Danish and foreign scientists. The early volumes Were mostly written in Danish with a French summary, while the more recent ones are generally published in English. Among the latter are several works on the Norsemen by H. P. Steensby, Daniel Bruun, Finnur Jônsson, Poul Nôrlund, and Fr. C. C. Hansen. A work of utmost importance for the later history of Greenland is the " Diplomatarium Groenlandicum " to be published by Louis Bobé. This author has also written many very interesting papers in " Det grônlandske Selskabs Aarbog ". " Det grônlandske Selskabs Skrifter " are mostly new editions or translations of early authors on Greenland. The previous colonies of Denmark date from the same period as those of most other European countries. They comprised Tranquebar on the southeast coast of India, a few trading posts in Bengal, and the Nicobar Islands, five or six forts on the coast of Guinea, and the islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. Jan in the West Indies. From the viewpoint of universal history they are not very interesting and do not differ essentially from the early colonies of other European countries. The possessions in India and Africa were given up as early as the middle of the 19th century, whereas the West Indian islands were not sold to the United States till 1917. Several works on the tropical colonies of Denmark have been written by Kay Larsen. The colonial history of other countries has only been very little dealt with, and nearly always in quite popular works which have not been included in the list below. It may be mentioned, however, that there has been a rather considerable Danish emigration to the United States and Canada, where a few essentially Danish speaking settlements still may be found in the west.
