Swain, United States vice commercial agent at P o r t - a u - P r i n c e , do hereby certify that the annexed document is a just and true copy of a report of a survey recorded and signed in the books of this office. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and affixed my offi足 cial seal, at the city of P o r t - a u - P r i n c e , this thirty-first day of May, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and [ L . W e , whose names are hereunto subscribed, do h e r e b y certify and attest, that, on the twelfth day of May, at the instance and request of Thomas George Swain, E s q . , United States vice commercial agent resident in this city, w e went on board and alongside of the American brigantine called the Venus, to examine the said brigantine, in order to ascertain the possi足 bility of said vessel being able to prosecute h e r voyage hence to N e w York, as well as the state of said vessel ; and we do r e p o r t : T h a t it is entirely impossible for said brigantine, called the Venus, to proceed to sea in the state that she now is in, as she makes water very freely whilst lying at anchor in the harbor ; and, furthermore, we give it as our opinion, that the repairs necessary to make said vessel seaworthy will amount to more than said vessel is worth. W e further give it as our opinion that the necessary repairs cannot be made in this place. W e therefore recommend that the said vessel be sold for the benefit of whom it may concern.
