WHY IS IT SO BEAUTIFUL AT THE MÖHNESEE? So beautiful that the Westphalian Sea has become in 2022 the favorite lake of North Rhine Westphalia again. There are many good reasons for this! Swimming, cycling, hiking: in fact there is a wide range of offers for sports and fun in the fresh air. Whether alone, as a couple, as a family or in a group, the Möhnesee is a place of well-being for young and old. Kanzelbrücke, Seetreppe oder Möhnesee-Tower: picturesque places invite you to linger. But the real star ist the imposing Dam, which has been impressing visitors of the lake for more than 100 years. So: Let’s go to the Westphalian Sea! We are looking forward to welcome you. It would be a pleasure for us to help with the planning!

MÖHNE-DAM Beautiful, romantic, majestic ... Möhne Dam impresses, stirs the senses and sends the imagination soaring! Visible from far away, Westphalia’s weightiest monument rises above the surface of the balancing reservoir. Its story, which is meaningful and moving in equal measure, began more than 100 years ago. For the planning stage of what was then the largest dam in the Sauerland, the Ruhr Dam Association had to acquire about 12 square kilometres of land and encourage people to leave their homes. 700 residents of the villages of Kettlersteich, Delecke, Drüggelte, Stockum and Wamel had to find somewhere else to live. It took four years for the huge quarrystone dam to grow to its height of 40 metres, which it reached in October 1912 – a year ahead of schedule! During the Second World War, the Möhnesee played a crucial role in the armaments industry in the Ruhr area. The Allied forces recognised this. And so, on the night of 17th May 1943, the dam became the target of air raids. Using their specially developed “bouncing bomb”, the English attackers managed to tear a 70-metre-wide, 20-metre-high hole in the dam wall. But just five months later, the dam had been restored to its original size.

MÖhnesee

A hundred years ago, people in the Ruhr area already regarded the Möhnesee as a local recreation area, and its importance for tourism has continued to grow over the years. Today, the dam is a protected cultural monument and the area’s main attraction. The two power plants, which were integrated into the dam right at the outset, now supply environmentally friendly, climate-neutral electricity. Guided tours of the control tunnel are a fascinating way to see the inside of the structure. A good start to every Möhnesee holiday! 5

Was it an ancient pagan place of worship, a baptistery from the Carolingian era, or is it a replica of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem? Drüggelte Chapel is still full of mystery. Surrounded by farm buildings, a barn and a bakery, the chapel is situated on a slight hill near Delecke. Its roots are said to go back to the eighth century. The unusual, twelve-sided central structure with its 16 columns and its mysterious ornaments, never fail to get people speculating.

The Church of St. Pankratius (Pankratiuskirche) in the heart of Körbecke might not look parti cularly special from the outside, but it’s a true gem on the inside. The wonderful 18th-century altar carvings were done by the master carver and sculptor Heinrich Stütting, who worked in Körbecke for decades. The Romanesque tower of the three-nave, four-bay hall church was built around 1100.

PANKRATIUSKIRCHE Am Kirchplatz 2, 59519 Möhnesee 7

PANKRATIUSPLATZ Pankratiusplatz is a square right in the centre of Körbecke. With its field of water fountains and a wealth of places to sit, it’s a good place to stop for a while, particularly for families. For children, it fulfils that urge to cool off in the summer, and the culinary options wherever you look keep your body fit and well. A market takes place on the square every Thursday afternoon, from 3 pm to 7 pm. 8

SEEPARK & SEETREPPE

MÖhnesee

A park with attractions for all generations. The Seepark offers spacious sunbathing and lounge areas directly on the reservoir, as well as separate paths for cyclists and pedestrians. The lower part has a lakefront stage with steps leading down to the reservoir, which creates a pleasant route down to the water and offers an impressive setting for events. Young and old can really let off steam with leisure activities including an expanded skate park, a large adventure playground with a toddler play area, a boules alley and spaces for other ball games and different kinds of sports. Because it connects directly to the promenade, the Seepark in Körbecke is a good starting point for walks and for the Gesundheits parcours, a physical activity trail that is suitable for wheelchair users. It’s also easy to reach the southern side of the reservoir and the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park via the footbridge. 9

Opening hours & Guides: May 1 until October 3: on Sundays and public holidays 10:00 am until 12:30 pm During the holidays also on Wednesdays at 10:00 am Haarhöhe B 229/Haarhöhenweg 59519 Möhnesee-Delecke Additional information: www.heimatvereinmoehnesee.de

A little hint: From April to May one may observe the breeding kestrels in their nest.

BISMARCK TOWER The view is breathtaking! From the Bismarck Tower (Bismarckturm), the highest point in the Soest Börde area, you can see for miles across the fertile fields of the Haarstrang ridge and the foothills of Arnsberg Forest. On days with good visibility, you can even see the Dortmund TV tower 10

and the Hermann Monument in Teutoburg Forest from the 18-metre high platform. Situated north of the Möhnesee, near Wippringsen, the Bismarck Tower has become a popular stop for hikers and cyclists.

MÖhnesee

HEVEARM PLATFORMS The Hevearm and Hevesee nature reserves make up the largest resting and wintering grounds for waterfowl in Westphalia. Great crested grebes, mallards, coots and gray wagtails provide scientists with data for their research. If you just want to enjoy the panorama, you can take a break on the viewing balconies on the Hevearm part of the Möhnesee.

MÖHNESEETOWER Anyone who climbs the steps to the Möhnesee Tower (Möhnesee Turm) on the southern shore is rewarded with a breathtaking pano ramic view of the lake, the Haar strang hills and into the Sauerland. The possibilities for visitors are just as varied as the landscape itself: you can get onto the Sauerland Waldroute or other marked trails from right by the tower. 11

KANZELBRÜCKE NEAR WAMEL The columns of this bridge rise out of the water of the Möhnesee like pulpits in a church. The German word for “pulpit” is “Kanzel”, so these columns are what give this picturesque bridge its name. The charming Kanzelbrücke over the forebay at Warmel is more than 100 years old. 12

The centerpiece (featuring red, fallow and sika deer, sheep, goats, peacocks and pheasants) is still the wildlife park, but there is also a newly built aviary and a showroom. It’s worth taking a walk around the forest bee stations and meadow orchards with rare varieties of fruits. And if you want to know what a xylotheque is, you should definitely include Völlinghausen in your holiday itinerary. 13

FISHING PARADISE Anglers value the peace and exercise in the fresh air here, as well as the good infrastructure and of course the Möhnesee’s rich fish stocks. Catfish, pike, carp, zander, lake trout, eel, tench, perch and vendace swim about in the water, along with bream, roach and cisco. 24

The boat rocks gently on the still, misty morning lake. Gradually the sun rises and gains strength.

Tips for the cold season – Wildlife park Völlinghausen at rutting season – the mighty roar of the game resounds in the forest between September and October

In autumn, calm returns to the Westphalian Sea. Temperatures drop and the leaves on the trees turn brightly coloured. It’s the best time of year for nature lovers and explorers at one of the largest reservoirs in Germany.

Waterfowl appreciate the tranquility of winter too; the Möhne Dam offers resting and overwintering opportunities and has been designated a European special protection area. Thanks to the favourable living conditions, a particularly large number of different bird species can be observed here. 25

Our special tip: A full moon hike in the Arnsberger Wald. For information ask Touristik Möhnesee.

OUR FOREST IN TRANSITION The Möhnesee borders the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park, one of the largest contiguous forest areas in Germany. It is criss-crossed by hiking trails and has been offering space to relax and exercise in nature for many years. Heat, drought, storms and pests have had a significant impact on the forest. As part of projects like Bürgerwald Möhnesee, locals and visitors get involved in reforestation by sponsoring trees, often in connection with a personal occasion. The forest will look different in the future, but it should remain a place where people long to be. 26
