Sataedu High Quality Education from Finland

Director’s Greeting Sataedu is a strong provincial and international provider of vocational education on the west coast of Finland. Our persistent work yields fruit in terms of the quality of education. Measured by the completion of studies and the students’ employment and further studies, we rank among the best quarter of the education providers in Finland. Our teachers’ competence is of a high quality. VET teachers are required to have at least a Bachelor’s degree, three years of work experience in the field and at least one year of pedagogic studies. This guarantees the students’ high level of competence. In some fields, such as social services and health care, teachers are required to have completed a Master’s degree. Of the approximately 150 Finnish providers of vocational education, only a few – including Sataedu – have been awarded the Erasmus Mobility Charter. It is an EU-level guarantee of international competence. In terms of mobility and projects, Sataedu is among the ten best education providers in Finland. High quality, competence and strong international skills made it possible for Sataedu to open activities also outside Europe. Elderly Care, in the field of social services and health care, as well as Automation and Robotics, are our essential areas of expertise. This is the expertise we also wish to offer to our partners.

Sataedu’s Way to Success Finland’s first vocational school was founded in Helsinki in 1899, and soon there were vocational schools also in other Finnish cities in need of skilled labour. From the 1950s onward, vocational schools were also founded to meet the needs of the provinces. Kankaanpää and Kokemäki were among the first municipalities to have their own vocational schools in 1957, thus creating the basis for the establishment of Sataedu. Later on, vocational schools were also founded in Harjavalta, Huittinen, Nakkila and Ulvila. When they joined their competences, Satakunta Educational Federation of Municipalities (Sataedu) was established in 2010. In national performance surveys, Sataedu ranks among the best providers of education. Kankaanpää, Kokemäki and Ulvila are locations of Sataedu’s comprehensive educational options. The Harjavalta unit focuses on education in social services and health care, the Huittinen unit on the transport sector as well as on education for immigrants and language training, and the Nakkila unit on education in the fields of media and culture. Strong development work, internationality and welfare are essential features of Sataedu’s operations. For many years, Sataedu’s Director Matti Isokallio has been involved in various positions of trust, developing European vocational education and training. Currently he acts as the Chairperson of the Board of EUproVET, which cooperates with the European Commission.

SOCIAL AND HEALTH CARE, PRACTICAL NURSE Practical nurses are social, health care and education professionals with a protected occupational title. All qualified practical nurses are listed and registered in the public register of Finnish National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health. Practical nurses adhere to shared values and professional ethics. In their work, practical nurses are responsible primarily to the customer or patient, but also to society as a whole. At our college, social services and health care (practical nurse) is one of our most popular study programmes. Qualifying as a practical nurse opens many doors in the labour market. The social services and health care sector along with the education sector provide a wide variety of jobs for which practical nurses have the required upper secondary level qualification. The qualification of practical nurse also awards general eligibility for higher education in Finland. In addition to Elderly Care, students can specialise in Rehabilitation.

AUTOMATION AND ROBOTICS Automation currently affects all areas of life. It has evolved into a cross-border umbrella concept, with information technology, process automation, robotics and artificial intelligence shaking hands, just to name a few. The last few decades have seen the emergence of the fourth industrial revolution, called Industry 4.0. Industry 4.0 takes the focus of digital technology in recent decades to a whole new level by leveraging connectivity through the Internet of Things (IoT), access to real-time data, and the deployment of cyberphysical systems. Sataedu’s trainings are strongly focused on Industry 4.0 and IIOT. The students at Sataedu study primarily the discrete automation installations study programme. This module covers comprehensively sensoring installations, actuator installations, the basics of control technology, troubleshooting and document reading comprehension. Our students graduate to become professionals in automation and maintenance. Our students have been successful in national and international vocational skills competitions which proves that we are competent in our field. Together with the strong robotics industry in our area we strengthen our skills in using and developing robotics. We are an active participant in the Robocoast cluster.

GAME DEVELOPMENT The video game industry is a multidisciplinary business, with professionals from a variety of backgrounds. In our vocational studies, we focus on the fundamental skills of game development; design, programming, project management and 2D/3D art. We also offer our students a good environment to specialize in their chosen career path and to gain teamwork experience during our group projects.

AUDIO-VISUAL COMMUNICATION, FILM AND TV The student is able to become familiar with the field by working as a part of a team in multi-camera production, in a role both in studio and in field productions, working as a member of a team in a mobile film crew and learning how to choose the right kind of equipment for different kinds of productions. In addition, the student is also able to learn how to process the recorded material with an editing software and learn to understand the meaning of work ethics when processing the material. A big role in training is also given to learning aBout following schedules in broadcasting. Our training packages aim to give both comprehensive and practical conception about vocational education in the fields of TV and Film in Finland.
