How They Met: Grace was hosting a political fundraiser for a County Commissioner candidate when she caught the eye of Dr. Croley. Determined to date her, he showed up at a mutual friend's birthday party and pursued his dream girl. The pair became inseparable. Last December, Croley surprised Grace with an engagement ring and those four little words. "Will you marry me?" Power Couple: While the popular news anchor is missed by viewers since leaving journalism, she's thriving at the helm of her company's team of innovative marketing experts, television producers and engineers. Grace Star Media Agency produces tv commercials and digital content for small businesses and large corporations in Texas and now throughout the United States. However, Grace can often still be seen on television in various Public Relations roles for her roster of clients. The self-made media mogul recently acquired BOERNE Monthly Magazine, a publication that highlights business leaders and high

profile figures in the Hill Country. After practicing at his own successful dentistry, Dr. Croley now serves as a Senior Transitional Analyst at the largest national dental practice transition firm in the United States, AFTCO. He guides clients through the complex acquisition process of buying and selling practices. Grace has since created a new division for Grace Star Media that solely markets for dentists nationwide. Grace Star Dental combines smart technology, digital marketing and clever commercial campaigns to grow dental practices. The couple will continue to reside in San Antonio, Texas. Grace is thrilled to welcome Croley's four sons as her step-children. (She is also excited to become the mother-in-law to all four of their wives.) Her own mother, Debra Prude adores "JC" (as she calls him) as her own. Congratulations to the entire family. LOVE IS IN THE AIR.

MARISSA VALDEZ Collaboration and mentoring by an award winning musician and music producer are valuable tools grooming the early music career of Marissa Valdez, a San Antonio singer/songwriter. Marissa recalls displaying her love for music by singing in her child car seat and later performing at her elementary school. In high school, choir directors encouraged her talent for music and English teachers encouraged her talent for prolific poetic writings. Her fellow students in the arts programs were supportive and inspired Marissa to follow her first love, music. According to eighteen year old Marissa, humming her original tunes, envisioning her own performance on a grand stage, and then writing poetic lyrics make up her creative process. She describes using the process everyday, all day, as she adds to her catalog of songs and plans a global career as a singer/song writer. Grammy award winner, Chris Lieck, has guided Marissa’s

musical journey since her first singing lessons at his state of the art recording studio, San Antonio Voice.! Under his guidance, Marissa now sits at the sound board in The Community of the Music Industry & Arts recording studio. Marissa engineers her own vocal tracks with music accompaniment that often includes her playing guitar. With 100s of her original songs to choose from, an album for disc and download is in production. Marissa admits that working in the music industry is often a struggle. For success it requires total, time-consuming dedication and sometimes that creates a feeling of loneliness. Once active in the youth social scene, time became scarce for activities other than Marissa’s high school courses and her in-studio music business education. Studio time needed to write and practice songs, do sound checks, lay down tracks, mix and finalize a master recording requires hours daily. Marissa wishes she had made a full commitment to her craft earlier than she did. Even with all her early age accomplishments, she regrets losing some of those needed hours because of real life responsibilities. Marissa humbly envisions her music future providing a fulfilling career. Her true reward and comfort, however, comes from engaging an audience in upbeat music, memorable lyrics, and fun energy. The Covid 19 pandemic interrupted some performance and promotion momentum. She used this time to reflect on her music career. She still strives for the big stage but appreciates the opportunity to be free of quarantine. Feeling live audience energy is her definition of achieving "Stardom" these days. Marissa’s professionalism is unmatchable. She asks the

right questions. She maintains a positive attitude. She seeks and takes advice from seasoned professionals and is committed to honing her craft. She applies much needed common sense to a challenging industry. She recognizes her talent and is grateful for her gift. Marissa’s voice recordings are rising to the caliber of artists in the genres she admires, like Ariana Grande and Katy Perry. In 2021, as venues are opening up and hiring performers, she is eager to market her recordings and take to the stage at both small and large venues. Pursuing an opening act gig at festivals and concerts peaks her interest. “Artist Series” Resumes in 2021-2022 Season “Music on Tuesdays” to mark 98th season If you love world-class music in small settings for an incredibly affordable cost with free parking, read on! As a local magazine stated: “The Tuesday Musical Club is one of the fine institutions—created by and for ladies— that survived two World Wars, the tumult of the late 20th century and the vicissitudes of the early 21st to maintain its position as one of the city’s foremost presenters of classical music.” Tuesday Musical Club’s Artist Series, which was paused in 2020 in response to coronavirus concerns, is resuming its 2021-22 concert series of four world-class artists, beginning in the fall of 2021. The club’s first Musical Teas occurred in 1923 and evolved into its Artist Series concerts featuring worldclass artists, with only one year of interruption. It is one of

the oldest continuous musical series sponsored by women in the United States. During the past 97 seasons, such preeminent artists as Isaac Stern, Leonard Rose, Josef and Rosina Lhevinne, Angelika Kirchschlager, Arcadi Volodos, Chanticleer, The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, Joshua Bell, Nathan Gunn, Stephen Hough and Lawrence Brownlee have graced our stage. The 2021-2022 TMC Artist Series schedule is: October 26, 2021, 2 p.m. - Jonah Kim, Cellist The recipient of two Grammy Awards who has recorded across a spectrum of genres, Jonah Kim is highly sought after internationally as a chamber musician and a founding member of the “hip, unstuffy, and malleable” Ensemble San Francisco. What’s New at NIOSA in 2021

A Night In Old San Antonio® (NIOSA) will be back in June 2021—better than ever with smaller crowds.

Originally scheduled for April 2021 during Fiesta San Antonio®, the four-night festival will now run Tuesday to Friday, June 22-25, 2021 from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. nightly. NIOSA brings the city’s heritage alive in its 14 cultural areas through the magic of 155+ food, drink and atmosphere booths and entertainment stages; continuous live musical acts; decorations; souvenirs; and many dedicated volunteers. This is the 72nd presentation of NIOSA, solely produced by and benefitting The Conservation Society of San Antonio (one of the nation’s oldest and most active historic preservation organizations). SOMETHINGS NEVER CHANGE (thank goodness!); NIOSA 2021 will still: • occur in the heart of downtown San Antonio on the grounds of La Villita Historic Arts Village District, with

Those stations will also allow guests to load more money on their wristbands. o Don’t worry: There will be many manned BlastPass stations on the NIOSA grounds to help people buy and

This year, ONLY e-Tickets will be accepted at NIOSA this year and can only be purchased on NIOSA website. The e-Tickets will then be scanned at the entrance gates. (No advance paper tickets will be sold at locations around San Antonio, as in past years.) A limited number of tickets for each night of NIOSA will be sold in advance on the NIOSA website. This will lessen crowds and allow for more distancing. • A few areas and some booths will be in new locations in La Villita this year. Leah Carrizales discovered her love for dance at the tender age of three when she had the opportunity to watch her older sister perform. At that moment Leah knew she wanted to dance. Shortly after she was enrolled at The Jewel of Art Dance Studio in 2018 where she began her training in Mommy and Me. It was at that point that Leah was born to dance. Most students need assistance from their mothers in the Mommy and me class however Leah was dancing all on her own. Due to her natural abilities she quickly advanced into the upper level children classes in Combo I and currently in

Combo II. She currently practices Jazz and Ballet under the direction of Jackleen Rios. She has performed in the past three years at the Annual Jewel Fest, Princess Fest and Deco fest. Leah also performed for the Jewel of Art Winter Spectacular Show in 2020 at the spectacular Tobin Center. She was also chosen to be part of a special event at the Tobin Center in San Antonio for the Premier I am Patrick Swayze performing for Patrick Swayze's family and friends. Leah is 6 years old in Kindergarten. She loves to learn to read, color and draw however, her truest passion is


dance and to performing. She dances with confidence and charisma. Jackleen Rios has inspired Leah's heart to continue to dance and one day she wants to be a dancer just like Ms Rios. She is always shinning bright like the brilliant diamond she was born to be. Leah is known to be the Sunshine in her family and just as sun shines so will Leah.

I started boxing in my youth and was influenced by my father I started boxing in my youth and was influenced by my father and my brother, William, who were both boxers. My father fought in Mexico and finished his career in Houston, and my brother had a brief amateur career. My younger brother and I used to box at the Boys and Girls Club on the northeast part of Houston. I was always surrounded by boxing and had an early idea about being in shape. Our childhood heroes were Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Julio Cesar Chavez and Muhammad Ali, among other boxers. I always felt the need to show people how to get in shape to prevent from getting overweight and getting sick from high blood pressure and diabetes. I always enjoyed teaching white color boxing. Also important to me was to teach youth and translate the analogies of boxing to life. I trained people at different fitness centers. I trained a lot of First Responders. One of my major passions is health and fitness. I had a big following, and my clients would implore for me to open up a gym. So, after my professional boxing career, I opened up my own boxing gym and fitness center. The name of my gym is Ferocious Fitness Boxing Gym. I take pride in, not only teaching boxing classes and fitness,

but also, in helping people and giving back to the community. I also train professional and amateur boxers. In my facility, it is extremely important to me that the boxers, the white color clients and First Responders are treated equally and enjoy a family camaraderie. Having a positive atmosphere is part of what makes my gym different. I give every child that trains at my gym the same treatment I would give my own children.

There are a million other things I could say I love about my career, but the thing I love most is being able to help people live a longer, healthier life, and to help other boxers achieve their dreams and aspirations of becoming a Champion.

Summer Road Trip Snacking Done Right Summer is here!!! Itís hard to believe that weíve almost made it halfway through this year and itís time for summer, but here we are, and I know we are ALLLL ready. For all those who are doing summer road trips (or just need some help in the snacking department!) I am here to help keep you on track! Avoid the drive-through and that afternoon blood sugar crash because youíve decided to not eat all day to save up calories for vacation eating a terrible idea!! Instead, prepare for travel snacking ahead of time. It is easier than you think to get some healthy snacks while youíre on the road (not to mention it will save you from hours of regret after youíve stuffed your face with crap after starving in the passenger seat for 4 hours). Pack a travel bag of snacks and consider these easy-toeat-easy-to-make tasty snacks that will fill you up and not leave you with a carb hangover. Homemade trail mix (mix in nuts, seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, hemp), dried fruit (like cherries, cranberries, goji berries, or raisins, just watch out for added sugar on these when you buy them), or fresh fruit (like chopped apples or some berries)

One of my favorite homemade trail mix recipes that also happens to be super nutritious and high in antioxidants: Equal parts pumpkin seeds, goji berries, roasted edamame; then drop in Hu Chocolate gems (however much chocolate you like!) Hu Chocolate is SOOO good and even better itís vegan, paleo, and itís sustainably and responsibly sourced; if you just want to use whatever chocolate you have at home, of course, that works, but this stuff is worth the Amazon order! Store-bought Energy/Protein Bars These should be bars that are made with whole foods and real ingredients; choose bars that have 6 grams of sugar or less (otherwise you might as well drink a soda...) Here is a list of some energy bars that have less than 6 grams of sugar and real ingredients!


FitJoy barre (see link for example)- (great sources of protein as well) Kind bars (some are great, some flavors have a lot of sugar; just read the sugar content on the label) Larabar Uber (this particular kind of Larabar contains less sugar than the regular one), but the regular ones are equally as delicious and nutritious, the sugar comes from dates (not added) Health Warrior Chia Bars Quest Bars (great source of protein as well)

Change doesn't happen overnight What to do when you aren’t seeing any progress Started a new workout regimen but haven’t seen progress? Have you reached a plateau and are no longer seeing results like you once were? With everyone having to work out at home now, many of us are still trying to stick to our goals and want to see results! And it can be hard to keep going when we’re not seeing the results we’re long for. This can be discouraging and frustrating, and many times can lead to poor decision making like crash dieting, dangerous workouts or giving up. I get questions about this all the time. Take a look at some of the questions I am most frequently asked about what it means when your workout isn’t getting easier.

2. Why am I not seeing immediate results? Should I try a new workout? Try other workouts to increase my muscle? Change doesn't happen overnight. As cliche as it sounds, it is true and many of us have to be reminded of that on the daily! Change takes time and commitment. So the first step should be to assess your goals and expectations. Losing 20 pounds in 90 days is a lofty goal and not realistic; set realistic goals before throwing out your workout routine entirely. If you have started a new workout and haven't seen results at all, chat with the trainer or in1. Does not improving week over week necessarily mean I’m not improving? A week is far too short to find meaningful improvements in exercise. 3-4 week should give you a good idea of whether your body is getting stronger or you are improving. Even if it doesn't feel easier, another sign that you are improving is your recovery time; a quicker recovery can mean that your body is getting stronger and adapting well to your new exercise. And the best change of all of course, is finding that your clothes are fitting differently (in a good way!).

4. I have a hard time pushing myself. How can I stay motivated and keep pushing through when a workout gets tough? Looking around and knowing you are not in it alone is usually the key! A group class (even virtual) is a great motivating factor for people; misery loves company, right?! Also remind yourself how much good you are doing for your body. The results are always worth it. 5. I typically do low intensity workouts or just some stretching, but I know I need to do some more challenging things to see results. I struggle getting through high intensity workouts, what can I do? Stick it out! Power through and you will thank yourself on the other side. The feeling of accomplishment after a tough workout makes all the sweat, struggle, hurt and self doubt worth it. Own the struggle and walk out of class feeling empowered!

Heading into this summer we are hitting the ground running Heading into this summer we are hitting the ground running in a new realm. Post Covid we are all recovering from having our existence and lives on pause . There's no better timing than summer to jumpstart our world again, right? My concern for people is a form of PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder with all of the trauma we've experienced socially and personally with Covid. Loss of life, loss of health and loss of friends and family, loss of freedom, loss of jobs and loss of a community spirit have deeply effected every single one of us. As I see patients in my clinic, I have had many different types of conversations about many different levels of anxiety with stepping out into the free world so to speak. Some are absolutely done with the whole idea-taking off their masks, with getting their vaccine, ready to run and return to a normal world that's not quite normal yet. Some are still intensely afraid as I see some double masked and wearing gloves and resisting the return to the work and social world. There are those who are completely against vaccinations and afraid of long-term effects and issues surrounding vaccines and potential conspiracy theories which may not

always be so far fetched but confuse legitimate efforts to return society to normal. There are some who were sick and still suffering the long-term effects of a limited recovery and are still struggling to get back to good health. I have written a blog and have a radio show local and stream on AM 930 The Answer KLUP 4pm on Sundays and YouTube channel, podcast on Spotify and iTunes that you can find links on my website drpbetterlife.com in regard to our varied feelings and reactions as we step out into the New World. My hope is that we continue to have deep understanding of each other and resist the new social phenomenon of judgment and blocking, resisting others thoughts, feelings and emotions and anxieties. We cannot judge one another on these anxieties we can only judge ourselves based on our own intensity of experiences. You can count on me and I hope I can count on you to remember that we each have a different perspective as we heal. We should step in to each other shoes and remember that we have to move forward together and heal from this intensely and massively emotional and detrimental experience. Sometimes we need extra motivation to keep us on the fitness bandwagon. But where do you find it? While many fitness events were beginning to reopen in April and May of this year, many were still canceled due to Covid (just like my Ironman Texas was in late April). Thatís when flexing your financial muscle can come in handy. Nothing opened up my eyes more than watching the community come together to make local event fundraisers a record breaking success. This last month I emceed a virtual gala for the Thrivewell Cancer Foundation where they raised a record $3,250,000 dollars! And three million came from one donor!! A few weeks later, I emceed an event for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and again they raised a record $2,230,000. Again, two million came from one donor!! But so many people were inspired by the generosity of that one donor, that extra donations kept pouring in and I know they definitely inspired me to be more active in the non-profit world to help those who are less fortunate or dealing with life-threatening health conditions.

istered for my next Ironman race. I had originally wanted to be done with Ironman races after this year because I wasnít sure my body could take the beating. So the cancellation of Ironman Texas in April threw my whole plan for tackling the mega triathlon into a tailspin. I couldnít possibly stay motivated to train like this for another 2-3 years. Ugh! But, standing by and hearing firsthand how one person could be so moved to make such a significant contribution to the well being of our brothers and sisters going through unimaginable pain and suffering, gave me an idea. Why not throw my name in the ring as an Ironman Foundation athlete? These are athletes who raise money for an organization in exchange for an entry into the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii! So, I did it. I made a few inquiries and calls. My good friend and fellow triathlete, April Ancira, gave me some pointers on how she was approaching her journey to race in Ironman Kona. Sheís been working at it for a few years and has all sorts of plans and alternative plans óincluding Ironman Foundation ó if her initial plans donít work out, sheís got the next step lined up.

In a few days, I was signed up as a potential athlete competing on behalf of the Leukemia & Lymphoma All of this happened at a time when I wasnít sure how Society. I wonít know until December of this year if I I would stay motivated until November, when I am regmake the cut. But if they accept me, my goal is to raise at

Every three minutes, someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer. *More than 1.2 million people are living with or are in remission from blood cancer and more than 33% of blood cancer patients do not survive five years after diagnosis. *Currently, LLS Childrenís Initiative is a $100 million, multi-year endeavor. *In the last 40 years, only four oncology drugs have been approved for first use in children. With approximately 80% of childhood cancer survivors developing one or

Kenni Jandt Bio At 5 years old Kenni’s mom knew her sass needed to be used for good and not evil. Growing up in her mom’s dance studio, Studio of Dance and Cheer, the only world Kenni knew was on a stage in hair and makeup. To channel this energy into something positive she competed in her first of many natural pageants. Within a year of starting to compete Kenni qualified for NAM Nationals in California. Here she won the first ever Runway Model in the princess division. This led Kenni to want to pursue modeling and a meeting with Lari Nelson Fashion Group. The time spent with NFG and her pageant coach Kassidy Klein has helped Kenni further her pageant career. Her first IJM International pageant she placed 4th in modeling. At her second IJM Internationals this past summer she won the international photo shoot. Currently Kenni is

Jr. Miss Lone Star with Texas Regency International and can compete in Las Vegas this summer. When not modeling most of Kenni’s time is spent dancing, cheering, and studying. She cheers for her middle school team and competes in all star cheer with Studio of Dance and Cheer. This past season her cheer team had a zero-deduction performance and her contemporary dance won 1st place overall. Recently Kenni was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. One day Kenni would like to walk the runways like her idol, Tyra Banks. Kenni’s last trip to the Modeling and Talent EXPO, hosted by Mike Beatty proved she is on her way. She was awarded 1st runner up with her comp card and selected for the prestigious fashion show. Having grown quite a bit and aged up for some of the larger markets Kenni cannot wait to return.


Reid Jandt Bio Standing in front of the TV watching the Radio City Rockettes in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade Reid asked, “How old do I have to be before I can go there?” He was 4 years old but knew his dream was to someday be in New York doing what he loved. More than anything Reid loves to perform. His favorite way to perform is through dance. At the age of three Reid began dancing at his mom’s studio in New Braunfels, TX. He has been dancing at Studio of Dance and Cheer ever since. Throughout his years of dancing Reid has won multiple 1st place awards and two National Dance Titles. In 7th grade he made history at his middle school as the first male on the team. Again, in his 8th grade year when he became the first male officer on his team. In eighth grade Reid was selected out of over 1000 dancers to join the prestigious Austin Ballet summer program. The road has not always been easy though. Even currently being a male dancer is not always accepted by others. Joining the mod-

eling world helped Reid to see other males who appreciate clothes and hair! While waiting backstage with his sister Kenni at a fashion show Reid was asked to join the show. He declined but did join modeling classes with his sister. It did not take him long to realize he loved all forms of being on stage, including the runway. Reid joined the Nelson Fashion Group and has been working with them since. The Modeling and talent EXPO presented by Mike Beatty was a success for Reid. He was awarded best headshot and comp card. Reid was also selected to be in the prestigious fashion show held at the end of the EXPO. Not only did he walk the fashion show, but he opened the show with his solo dance routine. These steps lead Reid to have the confidence to land the “Back to School” add for Melrose. His picture was featured in their stores all over the United States. As he has grown in height so have his dreams. Reid cannot wait to return to EXPO and further his dreams.

DUTY VS. LOVE WRITTEN BY JEN GUIDRY

God calls us to be imitators of Christ. To spread His word throughout the nations. Declare His glory. To not grow weary of doing good. To love one another.

Duty makes your spouse coffee in the morning. Love brings that coffee to her with a dance and a smile to make her laugh in the morning.

Yet we get so focused on the destination, that many of us forget the journey along the way. We know that we are supposed to do all of these things and we work toward them, but we forget to inject them in to EVERYTHING we do. That includes work. What better way is there to inject love (God’s love) into your day and the day of everyone you come across than to perform your tasks... your obligations...your chores... with love in your heart?

Duty pops out of bed the second the alarm goes off. Love builds in 5 minutes for morning snuggles.

Hear me out here as I talk about duty versus love today. Duty is making your spouse a lunch. Love is putting a nice note inside the lunch sac.

Duty is finishing your assigned task early and blowing off the rest of your work day. Love is asking if anyone else needs help. Duty is saying, “That’s not MY job, sorry.” While love rolls up its sleeves to assist. Duty says goodbye to your loved one with a quick obligatory peck on the cheek. Love stops what it is doing, gets up and gives your sweetie a long, purposeful hug.

Terrin Fuhrmann How did you get started in this business? My senior year of high school, a friend of mine was dating a promoter at Club Level. I asked him for a job, and that’s where it all started, much to my mother’s dismay, since I was still in high school. Over the years, I was a promoter, barback, bartender, manager, and a GM. I learned how to manage a bar at Suede Lounge downtown under Sarah Hartman. While I was working there, a friend of mine who used to build custom homes asked if I wanted to open a bar with him… Long story short, that’s how I started Back Porch in Stone Oak. Why are you in this type of business? As I said, I started promoting at Club Level in high school, and the night I started, I knew I wanted to be in the business. I love curating a customer’s experience, from what they are listening to, seeing, smelling, drinking, eating, and feeling. We are in the hospitality industry, so I try and think of every aspect involved in making a customer feel welcome and ensure a good time. What is your background? Education, Work Experience? I went to St. George and then to Central Catholic here in town, and Baylor University. As I said, I came up through the ranks of this business at some iconic

San Antonio clubs and bars. How long have you been in business? In the business since 2002, but I have been an owner since 2006. Over 15 years and 11 concepts. How has technology, such as computers and the internet, impacted on how you conduct business? Social media is the key to success in any business nowadays. Elsewhere has grown to over 23k followers on Instagram and over 15k likes on Facebook in little over a year. With quality content that’s engaging, your posts get seen by more and more people, and in turn, bring in more customers. A lot of Elsewhere’s success is a direct result of our social media presence. With very Instagramable spots all around Elsewhere, it’s like built-in advertising as people take, tag and share pictures of our space. What is your management style? I lead with a very common-sense approach to all situations. If it doesn’t make sense or slows down the process, it’s not worth doing. I’m very blunt and matter-of-fact


when dealing with customers and employees. There’s nothing worse than wasting everyone’s time. I also take care of the people that work so hard for me. We have staff outings with everyone, where we will go do something fun and blow off some steam. My partner, Nolan, and I buy the staff dinner a couple nights a week during their shifts as a “Thank You.” We try our hardest to cultivate a good team energy and atmosphere. Culture over everything. Why is it important to you personally to succeed? Well, my dad died when I was four, and my sister died when I was 15, and I was not the best of kids when I was growing up. I put my mother through a lot by always getting into trouble. After a lot of self-reflection and years of therapy, I got my act together. So, it’s important to me because I want to make my mom proud, as cliche as that sounds. What do you see the future holds for your type of business?

This past year was a very strange and tough one for the hospitality industry, but I think the industry, as a whole, pivoted and shifted so well that a lot of these new ways of operating are going to become standard in the way we do business. To-go alcohol is now law in Texas. Outdoor spaces are a must (thank God Elsewhere is all outside). People are now comfortable using QR codes. Elsewhere now offers order and pay at your table, so you don’t have to wait in line for drinks. Also, with everyone being so isolated for the past year, I think people appreciate social gatherings with friends now more than ever. Again, it’s our job to give them the best and most comfortable place to do that. Is there anything in particular you’re looking to accomplish with your career? I just want to keep growing. I love the creative process of starting a new concept and getting it off the ground. What type of business form do you have, sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation? Partnership with Nolan Ellis. I’m also a partner


in two restaurants in Austin, TenTen, a high-end modern Japanese restaurant, and Devil May Care, a Mediterranean supper club. How did you get the background and skills necessary to run this type of business? Learn by doing, a lot of trial and error. Early on in my career, I was part of a worldwide organization called EO, Entrepreneurs Organization, recommended by an old boss of mine. Like-minded businesspeople that can use others’ experience as a resource. Kind of like a Board of Directors for a small business. It definitely helped me navigate some of the more tedious aspects of the business world. How do the social, economic, environmental, technological, legal and political environments impact your business? One thing that is great about the bar/restaurant business is that people will always want to go out and eat and drink. How are people aware of your business? Social media, word-of-mouth, winning awards such as

Best New Bar, Best Bar, Best LGBTQ Spot, Best Patio for happy hour, etc… Where do you see yourself in your line of business in the next year? In the next five years? The next ten years? My partner and I have some really cool concepts we want to bring to life that we are working on as we speak. And of course, we want to scale Elsewhere and open another one in SA, and eventually, go to other markets in Texas. Whom do you seek advice from for your type of business? I have some really great business mentors I’ve picked up along the way. I also have some really great Partners and colleagues that are always there when I need them. Do you have a business plan to operate your business? I always make a business plan for all of my businesses. It helps to organize my thoughts and make sure I’m executing the plan as I should. Can you describe your customers? We have been so fortunate with our customers at Else.


where, it is such a great mix of people that all come together and just want to have a good time. Being on the local side of the Riverwalk, there are so many apartments and condos all around us, that our regulars are our neighbors. It’s a great sense of community down here. Why do your customers select you over your competitors? Elsewhere is unlike anything else in the city. The aesthetic is carefully curated to make people feel at ease and comfortable, from the landscaping, to lighting, to the art installations around the property, Elsewhere is an experience. With trivia, live music and DJs that only play loungey, vibey house music, it’s a very “nonchalant” atmosphere. What are the biggest issues for running your type of business? Well, COVID definitely played a huge role in operations this past year, but we were lucky enough to open fully last May because we have a full kitchen. Also, being 100% outside, customers felt a little safer than being inside a bar or restaurant. Another issue in the bar/restaurant world is always trying to stay relevant. Again, with Elsewhere's uniqueness and close proximity to all of the River North living, we are primed for longevity. With constant updates to the landscaping, art instillations, food and drink menus, we are solidifying our place on the river.

What are your greatest achievements and significant milestones to date? (Please provide a timeline, if possible). Opening IVY Rooftop was really amazing. It was my first venture 100% by myself, and it was also the city’s first rooftop. Definitely stressful at times, but the journey is always the reward. Also, opening Back Porch at 23 years old and being the youngest bar owner in the city at the time was pretty cool. What three pieces of advice would you give others in your line of business today? Always adapt, always evolve… crowds are fickle, so you always have to keep innovating to keep them coming back. Don’t let emotions get in the way of making the right decision for your business. Don’t compromise your vision. If you think it’s the right move, then make it. What is the most satisfying quality about your job? I love when customers truly love the space and experience we’ve created for them, that they feel comfortable enough to keep coming back, to share birthdays, graduations, engagements, and weddings with us. When you have an idea, you execute it and see the positive reaction you get.


What would you say are your greatest challenges in your job? Trying to make everyone happy. It’s an impossible goal, but being in the service industry, that’s our job. We try and elevate as many people’s experience as we can.

What has been your most satisfying moment in your business career? I don’t think there is one instance, but opening night at each place is always so satisfying. After just an idea that was bouncing around in my head to producing something tangible that people enjoy is always fun to experience.

How do you define success? Money is always nice, but not the end-all be-all. Money allows you to not have to worry about certain things, but success, to me, doesn’t have to do with business at all. As I said, I wasn’t a very good kid growing up, and the work I’ve done to become more self-aware is probably what I’m most proud of. Self-awareness is a never-ending journey because we should all work on ourselves every day, but being a mentally healthier person, treating others with respect, helping when and where you can all plays

What would you like your business legacy to be? I love hearing customers tell me stories about nights they’ve had at one of my venues, that, indirectly, I played a role in cultivating these memories. I always want my customers to have an amazing experience where they make memories with their family and friends.

I always say that I make business owners dreams come true and for a long-time people did not even know what I sold. My point is selling your vision not a product. Once you have that team in place, it is important to develop the leaders in your team. Research show that employees are happier

when they know there is room for advancement in their company and their bosses care abut their professional development. • Hire experts. Don’t try to do everything yourself – This tip right here is so crucial for success. Many times, I see business owners trying to do everything themselves. They often get bogged down or burned out. Some tasks may fall short or never even completed. Find the experts that can help you accomplish the goals for your business. Delegate tasks to the experts and enjoy work life balance. • Networking – surround yourself with the right people. Networking and giving back to your community are keyways to ensure that you and your business are being recognized. Get involved with associations like the chamber or any industry specific associations. Those groups can make a huge difference on the growth of your business. • Keep up with the latest business trends – always stay on top of your competition by being aware of any latest trends or techniques in your field. SAM: What would you say are your greatest challenges in your job? Finding consistent resources, and ensuring the families that we assist are taken care of after we step out of the situation. SAM: In your line of business, what motivates you? Knowing that God is using me to help others. I wake up every day thinking about who I will assist, and how can I do more.

SAM: How do you think women today define success? Everyone is different. Success to me is setting your goals and crushing them. It’s also about being the best mother to my children, and setting them up to be successful. Pouring into others, and sharing my gifts. I believe that success is not about how much money you have, but the impact you have in the lives of others. Many women will define success by being a great mother, wife, and entrepreneur/worker. They will define success by income, job titles, the car we drive, and the house we live in. Though all of those play a significant part in our success story, my definition is a little more grounded.


SAM: What woman in history or your own family has been your greatest inspiration? My mother and my sister. My mother is a very strong woman. She intentional and very organized. I obtained my work ethics from her, learned to love, and give when you can. My sister is also a strong woman. Life has thrown her so many lemons, but I always watch her make lemonade. SAM: Do you think women feel intimidated in business? Yes! Most industries are male driven. Women are sometimes afraid to speak up, and let their voices be heard because they don’t want to lose their jobs or be retaliated against.


SAM: How do women today achieve work-life balance? Work-life balance is very difficult. Oftentimes, our job will get more attention than our families. It is very important to be organized and disciplined with your time. There has to be cut off times, and family days. I always make time for family to let them know that they are the most important people in my life. SAM: How did you get where you are today, and who/what helped you along the way? The person I am today was bred from a lot of difficult situations that I encountered throughout my lifetime. Everything that I have ever worked for was very difficult to achieve. I have always had to go above

and beyond to succeed. There was one person that believed and invested in my future because he saw the potential that I carried. He was a great friend! He poured into me, and mentored me. I’m very grateful that he saw the best in me! That was the beginning of something beautiful! That one seed, has produced this great harvest! SAM: What have you learned about leadership, entrepreneurship and mentoring others? I have learned that it is my responsibility to give back! Are Personal Injury Settlements Considered Community Property? Let's say you find yourself injured in an accident, and you are fortunate enough to receive a settlement. Let's also say that your marriage is on the rocks and you unfortunately also see the potential for a divorce on the horizon. The question that this scenario creates is whether or not the settlement is considered community property. The answer is, it depends. Hopefully, you'll never have to consider this question, but let's take a look at how your settlement could be affected. First, under Texas law, community property consists of property, other than separate property, acquired by either spouse during marriage. Separate property, on the other hand, consists of property owned or claimed by the spouse before marriage, property acquired by the spouse during marriage by gift, devise, or descent, and recovery for personal injuries sustained by the spouse during marriage, except any recovery for loss of earning capacity during marriage. Note that the way the law is written, any economic damages (income, earning capacity, property damage) are not considered community property. So any

settlement you receive that consists of these types of damages are community property. Additionally, if you co-mingle your personal injury settlement with community property you'll essentially be changing the way that it is categorized. It is also important to note that, under Texas law, property possessed by either spouse during or on dissolution of marriage is presumed to be community property. This means that if you recover damages in your personal injury case for pain and suffering, and you are going through a divorce, the burden will be on you to prove that the settlement is separate property. So if you receive a personal injury settlement, and you are unfortunate enough to see a divorce on your horizon, you may want to consider putting the settlement in a separate account while you consult with an attorney about your options. As always, do everything you can to avoid an accident, and divorce for that matter, but if you find yourself in this situation, make sure to consult with a seasoned attorney, as there may be issues with the settlement that you hadn't considered.
