Hair Majesty Priscilla Fuentes Owner of Crown Couture Salon

Opening a business is hard. Nobody knows about the late nights, tough conversations or the sacrifices personal and professional that have to be made. Priscilla Fuentes is very familiar with the grit it takes to open a business. She opened the fabulous Crown Couture just months before the start of a long unpredictable pandemic. Construction was set to start November 7th of 2019 for her build-out, date to open was the following February. Priscilla had the professional background learning from her mentors at previous

salons she has worked at, the family support with the words of her father, Marcos Fuentes, “Treat everyone like a movie star,” and her heart for people to push her past any obstacle. Amidst the height of the pandemic, the Crown Couture team, not discouraged by the current limitations, set out to deliver everything from product and color kits directly to clients all over the city. Priscilla’s vision and leadership allows her team to work when-

ever, to accommodate clients’ safety. “Some clients have medical concerns, and their stylist can schedule a time with minimum people present, so they feel safe and cared for.” It is that flexibility and creativity usually found in the top leaders of any industry. “Learning to adapt, that is all we can do… is adapt.” –Priscilla Fuentes. Priscilla is mother to three beautiful children. Jake, 16 years old, Audrey, 10 years old, and sweet

Ysabelle, five years old. They support their mom’s hardworking ethic and sometimes get to help with tasks as a family. It is an entrepreneur education they are happy to learn from their mom. Being a business owner has taught Priscilla a confidence that she learned through the hard times. She appreciates the support and love she has received from her grandparents, her parents, and her uncle in filling the gaps that all parents can experience. Her roots are deep and rich in her love for her city and her family.

The Crown Couture team consists of ten stylists, an esthetician and salon coordinator that provide the highest quality in hair services. They specialize in catering to the specific needs of every client that walk in their doors. They have taken every extra step to sanitize and maintain a clean salon for every client. The inspiration for their name came from Priscilla's strong faith, as Jesus wore a crown. “Our hair is our crown.” “Couture” is, by definition, custom and made specific to a client’s fashion. Crown Couture will have you feeling like a movie star. As for Priscilla Fuentes, she has big plans for the salon and her growth as a business owner, mother, and friend. She has worked hard to get to where she is, and can’t wait to share Crown Couture with YOU!

BEFORE

By Hair Editor Cynthia Garza

My name is Isabella Adele Gonzales. I have grown up in San Antonio for most of my life. I am currently a Junior at Johnson High School. I have to admit, I am not a straight ‘A’ student. I have to work hard in my classes. One of my favorite classes in school, right now, is Japanese. My fun and outgoing teacher, Kato Sensei, brightens everyone’s day and treats everyone fairly. I also enjoy my Spanish VI class with Sra. Henderson, who makes class enjoyable and even lets us eat popcorn in her class. I am involved in the “Do Something Club”, in which we volunteer our time and talents where needed in our community. I also a member of the “Mental Health Club”, where we learn about and educate others on the real challenges people face. I also enjoy Art. I love taking pictures and drawing. I find Art to be so ravaging! You can get so much out of a single piece of art. Even the artist

themselves sometimes can’t explain why a stroke is in a certain spot. Art should be driven by passion and feeling. What good is art without feeling? I feel the best art made was made during a time of turmoil or excitement in one’s life. My current obsession is studying languages. I have actually studied Spanish since I was in Kindergarten and attended a bilingual elementary school. I have

traveled to México a few times with my family. Over this past summer, I became interested in Japanese and have been learning since then. I am going to Japan this summer, for the first time and plan on applying to College in Japan. Italian is another language I am interested in learning and I plan on traveling there in the future. There is a beauty to learning a language, though it may be difficult. I am so thankful to have the opportunity to learn. I enjoy speaking Spanish

with my dad and brother. I want to work hard so I can make friends who speak different languages all over the world. In school we had to draw on a board what we wanted to be when we were older. I hesitated in fear of judgment from others in my class. They were writing things like doctor, lawyer, and other “normal jobs” that a kid would want to be. I wrote “Model” on mine. I stood there for the picture questioning if I could really do it. Due to bullies I dealt with in elementary school, I think I really wanted to prove to people that I could be something and do something great for the world. Through the years I have forgotten about getting revenge on those who have said hurtful words or done hurtful things to me.

a singer or dancer. I’ve always enjoyed acting and performing. At the age of 7, I told my parents that I wanted to be a Model. The desire never went away. At the end of 2019, my parents contacted Lari Nelson, who is now my mother agent. I have been pursuing modeling and acting ever since. With Lari’s help, I was able to attend The Model and Talent EXPO in Dallas in November of 2020. I received callbacks from 13 different agencies. I signed with an agency but due to COVID-19, national and international opportunities have been limited. I am now working hard, doing my research and building my resume in the local San Antonio and Texas market. I have loved the opportunities and experiences that I have had. I hope my hard work will allow me to spread my wings and sign with more agencies around the world.

Like a lot of other kids, I had aspirations of becoming

Texas has started to make its mark on the fashion indus-

try! I was selected and honored to be a part of Texas Fashion Week 2021. I had the privilege to walk for talented designers including Desja Chanel Boutique, Roshnic, Nicó, Adrienne Yunger, Gabby Garcia Congrains, Agosto Cuellar, BY-Bonnie Young and SONSUZ by Angelina Mata. Some others in the industry who I have worked with include Henry De La Paz, Justine’s Photography, Al Zavala, Samantha Rose, Acting studio 101, Selah Trevino, Saige Tomas and the team for Texas Fashion Week, Miguel Flores Photography, Johnny Edward Coronado and many others who I have enjoyed getting to know. We have

some serious talent right here in San Antonio and throughout Texas! Whenever I feel down, I look to my future goals and dreams and remember what I am working towards. I will continue to pursue International Modeling and Acting. While studying at a University in Japan, I would like to Minor in Linguistics and Major in Criminology. I am doing this for myself. I’m still learning. That’s what life is about: find your own self-worth and find

the best version of you. The journey might be long, but that’s okay. I have always thought you can’t see the light without the dark and you can’t underestimate either because each has its own purpose. “You’ve got to have bad days to have good ones”, is what I’ve told many of my friends and family. Helping others makes me feel good because I also know what hurting others feels like. I am grateful to God for putting people in my life who are helping me to achieve my dreams and goals.

JAMES DEAN

Hello everyone interested in anything I've done or am attempting to do.I'm trying my best to represent underprivileged people and represent minorities everywhere that don't get enough recognition. I was born in Oklahoma city, Oklahoma but only lived there for a short time. I was raised in small towns in west Texas like Knippa, Uvalde, Devine, and Pearsall Every summer I would live on a piece of land my family owned and Hunt for food and appreciate my childhood outdoors I would fish minoes with my hands and fish and hunt animals to eat but, I would always show respect and never waste any part of the animal. My family is pueblo native and Hispanic and French my grandmother has a piece of pottery that's been in my Family since her grandmother and the pottery will be past down eventually to my Grandmother's Grandkids and so on. My family also associates hair with wisdom so I can't

have my hair longer than my Brothers hair and, he can't have hair longer than my grandfathers hair out of respect because my Grandfather has lived through more intense situations than me or my brother. I have one older Brother and one older Sister we grew up with a single Mom who occasionally had a boyfriend and tried to lead a happy life. My mother is now married and I have the respect for women and elders that she wants me to have. I've struggled with my mother but, we didn't grow up poor we grew up appreciative and I appreciate the woman who raised me into the man that I am today. As I grew up, I found myself moving closer and closer to San Antonio finally and I went to several high schools in San Antonio eventually graduating from John Jay high school. While I was at John Jay high school I was able to further my education and experience my love for Acting and Choir. I went to one act play where we placed and I performed choir for a uil competition where we scored

1's unanimously which is the highest score you can score .Needless to say there is a giant trophy with my signature on it and everyone who performed and placed. After high school I took a page from my moms book and started working relentlessly so I would never have to struggle again. After working as a server for a time I fell in love with a cbd company named SA Botanicals and started helping my community with affordable cbd to help anxiety depression and sleep disorders as well as chronic pain. I would wake up and recall dreams of me performing on stage or on film or singing and I knew my mom would want me to chase my dreams and dare to dream.

the young talented actors and models apart of Lari Nelson Fashion Group. It is my dream to perform my own humanity to save me from my own sanity to help inspire minorities so that they can dare to dream as well and they can achieve their dreams as long as they have heart and work hard. Since joining Lari Nelson Fashion Group I have become better as a man and an actor and have been flooded with so many amazing opportunities I am beginning to lose count. My life and families life is forever changed thanks to Ms. Lari Nelson. I'm getting excited but I took amazing photos with the amazing and talented AL Zavala and performed my work at the Dallas 2021 Expo .

My cbd company brought me to Wonderland of the America's where I met Lari Nelson and she changed my life. Not only did she tell me it was okay for me to dream but that my dream while inspire others like me to dream as well and that if I worked hard one day my dreams could come true. I immediately fell in love with everyone and it was only a coincidence that miss Lari grew up in Uvalde too.All the signs pointed to Ms. Lari myself, wanting the absolute best for Ms. Lari like she is my family and all

The second Expo after COVID. I was awarded the best Teen Male monologue award for performing the best monologue for my age group and I am proud to say that I got callbacks from a Dallas Agent named Clutts Agency, who has the most experience I could ever ask for to help me accomplish my dreams. I also signed with Landrum Arts Talent, my L.A. agent, and had the privilege of introducing myself to my manager and the amazing and beautiful Justine Hunt from Hines and Hunt. My life is forever

changed and I am forever grateful to have had the privilege to be apart of Lari Nelson Fashion Group and I hope everyone with a dream can get the kind of help that I have received. Thank you all for hearing my story and giving me the motivation I need to succeed and perform well for all of you. Thank you all I love you all and I will be working hard for you all and it's all possible Thanks to Ms. Lari Nelson. James Vincent Dean.

SIMPLICITY JUST MIGHT BE THE ANSWER TO OUR PROBLEMS By Howie Nestel-Business Editor Well, here we are in the year 2022. We may not all be on the same boat, but we’re all in the same storm. How did we get here? Global pandemic, erratic business and employment cycles, inflation, political divide, escalating uncertainty, and product shortages just to name a few problems we face as a society. But these challenges weren't supposed to happen. Not in 2022. Not at the best time in history to be alive. Medical advances have greatly improved the quality and length of our lives, the internet serves up everything we need to

know in seconds, and we video chat with loved ones anywhere in the world for free. So why are so many citizens of the first world depressed, anxious and uneasy? These are some of the big questions I’m contemplating while on a New Year’s weekend retreat in Concan, Texas on the Frio River. While here, I’ve thought about these societal concerns while on long, secluded walks in nature. I’ve even spent time meditating on these challenges that tie us human beings together. They are the subjects I’ve gone to bed thinking about and are among the first things that I think

about when I wake up to see the sun rise. Then, as I’m looking at the orange, yellow and red painted sky at sunset on my last night here, it hits me. The answer to feeling cheerful, carefree and confident is exactly what I’ve been doing for 3 days - resting, meditating, connecting with nature, walking, not watching TV, and having no phone service. For 3 days, I disconnected from the routine and stressful stimuli in my life and plugged into positive, readily accessible catalysts which transported me to a happier state of being. The answer is right there for all of us. We’ve known it all

along, but maybe we think that improving how we feel must certainly be more complicated than some simple exercise, or floating on a river, looking up at the stars, or spending a few quiet minutes alone while thinking about the blessings we’re thankful for. What’s our role on this planet? It certainly isn’t to worry, complain, repeat the pattern for 8 or 9 decades and then die. So, why are we here? My credo is this; To live an extraordinary life, you must destroy the law of familiarity. And what that means living outside the ordinary. Being grateful for what we have without being complacent. Helping enough other people get what they want, and as a result we’ll most certainly get what we desire. Life rarely

gives us what we want. Life is a mirror. It reflects back on us what we are. It’s a giver's gain mentality. But G-d, karma, nature, and life know when you’re not sincere, and you don’t get rewarded if you only give in order to receive. My friend, former Deputy Assistant to George H.W. Bush and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Sichan Siv imparted these words of wisdom which can benefit us all - ‘Be well, be wise, be worthy, be flexible and adapt to

difficult circumstances, follow your passion and when you do well don't forget to do good.’ For 2022, my resolutions are simple, give more, take walks, meditate, rest more, go barefoot more often, say ‘yes’ way more than I say ‘no’, connect with nature, spend more time with people who are uplifting, tune out the noise both from both inside my head and external sources, read, write and think more. Happiness comes from progress and service. Make 2022 an extraordinary year.

Local Businesswoman Elected as the First Female Board Chair in the 170-year History of Central Catholic High School, an All-Boys Marianist Catholic High School Central Catholic High School, a Marianist Catholic, all-male college preparatory school, has made history by naming Priscilla Gonzaba, a proud San Antonio Native and local businesswoman, Board Chair. She is the first woman in the school’s 170-year history to receive this title. While women have always played an integral role in Central Catholic’s community, this is the first time a female has assumed the top leadership position on the board. When asked about this historic moment for the school and her thoughts on becoming the first, Gonzaba said, “It is an honor to lead the charge as the first female Board Chair of such a diverse board. I am humbled to serve and feel that as a parent we want our children to be strong, positive servant leaders within our society and I plan to continue to support and works towards fulfilling our mission.” Gonzaba has roots that run deep at the school due to a family history that dates all the way back to 1949. She has numerous relatives who attended Central Catholic, including her brother, brother-in-law, and both of her sons who are class of ‘13 and ‘17. Gonzaba attended Incarnate Word High School, a private, Roman Catholic, all-girls school in San Antonio and a graduate of St. Mary’s University. She has many shamrock sisters and friends whose sons,

brothers, or husbands attend, or attended, CCHS. Her history of devoted leadership at CCHS begins all the way back in 2009 when she was asked to hold the office of Secretary for the Parent Club. This was just the beginning of Gonzaba’s long leadership journey at Central Catholic. Her numerous positions include becoming Parent Club President and serving as Parent Liaison to the CCHS Board of Directors in 2011, Board Member and Finance Chair on the CCHS Board of Directors in 2013, CoVice Chair in 2016, Co-Vice Chair in 2018, Chair-Elect in 2020, and officially Board Chair in July 2021. Also worth noting, Gonzaba was recognized and received Outstanding Leader in Catholic Education from the Archdiocese of San Antonio in 2015.

When asked about her unique experience and the potential challenges of being a female board chair of an all-boys San Antonio institution Gonzaba replied, “I have been involved with Central Catholic for several years. My family and I feel at home and consider the school and entire Central Catholic community as part of our extended family.” Central Catholic struggles with similar challenges that most Catholic schools face today such as declining enrollment and the cost of tuition. However, Central Catholic continues to thrive and retain its strong reputation for growing servant leaders in our community. Part of this could be due to the fact that there is such a strong community at Central Catholic of not only parents who have children attending CCHS, but of parents of alumni who continue to support Central Catholic when their children have graduated. “In 2018, Central Catholic High School created a Parents of Alumni group that is dedicated to supporting the Central Catholic community. As their sons graduate from Central Catholic High School, parents who have become lifelong friends still want to remain involved with the school and community,” said Gonzaba. Parents in this

group are able to stay connected and support the school through their FangDango fundraising event held during San Antonio’s Fiesta celebration. The school continues to grow and evolve through strengthening its partnership with St. Mary’s University and continuing to expand its facilities. Most recently in 2019 Central Catholic opened its Khalig-Cowie Convocation Center, a new 40,000 sq ft area that includes a gym with a competition-sized basketball court, a new weight room, a 150-seat chapel, and outdoor mediation and prayer garden. Central Catholic High School offers opportunities for young men of all backgrounds and offers both academic and financial assistance for those that qualify. There are many opportunities to be involved in extracurricular activities from service, academic, athletics, J.R.O.T.C., band, leadership and numerous other student organizations. “The young men who attend Central Catholic High School embark on this journey with the support of the entire CCHS community,” said Gonzaba.

Joanna Weidman, Businesswoman and Community Leader Extraordinaire Besides a rewarding career as Senior Vice President of Administration for NuStar Energy, Joanna Weidman volunteers her time for many non-profits, including serving as Board Chair of Clarity Child Guidance Center—the only nonprofit in South Texas providing a continuum of mental health care for children ages 3-17 and their families. Ensuring that every child and family that needs help receives help is a passion for Weidman. This mission hits close to home as she has family members who have had mental health struggles. Weidman is not alone as the nation is facing a mental health crisis. In December, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued a strong advisory on the urgent need to address the nation’s youth mental health crisis “further exposed by COVID-19 pandemic.” This crisis has reached South Texas as Clarity has seen a 65% increase in first-time patients seeking inpatient care; a 159% increase in the use of its Psychiatric Emergency Services beds; and a 19% increase in the number of patients placed on suicide

risk precautions. With the support of Weidman and her fellow board members, Clarity’s leadership and staff have worked hard to meet the demand for services. They have developed a COVID unit to provide treatment to asymptomatic COVID-positive patients; established the Next Step Center to help families navigate the behavioral health system; created a special unit for the treatment of children and

adolescents with high-acuity needs; transitioned many counseling services to telehealth; and supported eight school districts experiencing high demand for mental health services. Weidman has seen the needs first-hand as a volunteer for countless nonprofits, an advisor for Women United, past Chairman of St. PJ’s Children’s Home, and a mentor with The Thru Project. But her most important role – as mom to her 16-year-old daughter – fuels her passion for ensuring all local children and youth have access to mental health services.

TIPS FOR SELLING YOUR HOME IN THE NEW YEAR

By: Angela Brooks Have you been waiting until after the holidays to list your home? Now that the holidays have come to an end, now is the perfect time to take steps to prepare your home for a sale in 2022!! In addition to hiring a REALTOR®, who will be advocating for you, and ensuring you have the best selling experience possible, here are six steps to getting your home ready for sale. 1. Decide on a listing date How soon are you looking to sell? Make sure you have a realistic timeline for all of the tasks needed to get your home prepared. 2. Deep clean your home This requires a little more than everyday tidying.

Consider hiring professionals to clean your home (windows, carpets, walls, baseboards, ceiling fans). The cleaner your house is, the better it looks to potential buyers. 3. De-clutter your space Go through each room, and either throw away, or donate things that are broken, or no longer needed. Remove personal touch items, such as family photos , if possible. Open spaces, less clutter, and less personalized items, help a poten tial buyer envision themselves in your home. 4. Make needed repairs and/or Updates Are there any areas in the home needing attention? Maybe carpets need to be replaced, walls need to be re-painted, light bulbs replaced, is the faucet leaky? Fixing little things (or sometimes not so little things) lets the buyer see that the home

has been well -maintained. If you are expecting top dollar for your home, you may need to be prepared to spend a little in repairs/updates, to achieve the price you are expecting. 5. Curb Appeal When your potential buyer arrives at your home – what do they see first? The outside! Make sure the front of your home is appealing to the eye. This may mean trimming trees, planting flowers, mow ing the lawn, or a fresh coat of paint on the front door. 6. Stage your home Staging your home means presenting your home in the best way possible. It allows the buyer to

envision themselves in your home. Staging doesn’t have to be overwhelming, it can be as simple as rearranging existing furniture, to make the spaces appear larger. Staging can also include changing out window treatments, for a brighter look to the home, or repainting in a more neutral, light color. If you are ready to sell your home in the New Year, be sure to follow the steps above, to help you get top dollar for your home. In today’s market, every little thing helps to make your home stand out, and attract the perfect buyer!

The Eclective By Autumn Medina

Real Estate Editor I had the pleasure of meeting Shawna Misiong, of the Greater San Antonio Area, and touring her new showroom and boutique in Helotes. When you walk in, your eyes are immediately entertained by a unique combination of colors, shapes and patterns. Even their customer-accessible bathroom was so appealing I was taking pictures of the floor and fixtures (and coveting all of it!). It didn’t take long for my curiosity to spark and want to know more about the woman behind the design. This is what Shawna shared about The Eclevtive: “The Eclective is an eclectic collective of new and vintage home décor and gifts merged into one fun and bold collaboration. Our showroom is filled with furniture, rugs, lighting, art and home accessories for all design styles and tastes. Vintage items collected from auctions and antique shows have been given new life and mix beautifully

When you visit, you will be sure to smile from ear to ear. with new styles and trends. The Eclective can also offer its customers more in-depth assistance with their home projects with our in-house Interior Designer. This new boutique opened its doors in Helotes, Texas on December 2nd 2021, and is just outside loop 1604 on Bandera Road in the Helotes Country Village shopping center. Owner, Shawna Misiong is a local, licensed interior designer that took the recent pandemic as an opportunity to be closer to her family and home. Shawna stepped away from her decade long career with a design firm in San Antonio to begin paving the way for her vision of The Eclective. Shawna moved to San Antonio in 2002 from Corpus Christi to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio and graduated with Bachelor of Science in Interior Design. Registered with the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners, Shawna will continue to practice her passion of interior design within The Eclective.”

In talking with Shawna about her experience, we laughed about how people often think designers are just decorators who are very good about picking colors and furniture. Shawna’s experience is much more in depth, and she has the training and experience in working with architects and engineers, architectural software, CAD drawings, ADA requirements, and more. Her experience boasts projects including multimillion-dollar multifamily developments, offices, and private homes. Big or small, Shawna embraces all projects and gives them love and attention as if they were her own. The personality she brings is evident in her showroom and boutique. The Eclective is unique, appealing and entertaining! When you visit, you will be sure to smile from ear to ear at the lovely and sometimes humorous gifts and housewares. The items available in her showroom are witty, full of personality, beauty and flair. It is a happy

place to be. I would be confident to say that every item has a story – whether it’s a Willie Nelson Christmas ornament or a Hermes vintage scarf framed and made into beautiful art. Take a short trip to Helotes and visit the Eclective. You’ll leave a little more inspired, and hopefully a piece of that creative inspiration will find its way home with you! Follow The Eclective on Facebook at facebook.com/theeclectivehome or on Instagram at instagram.com/theeclectivehome/.

THE HOPPY MONK Article and photos by Editor Bryan Shreve SA Monthly Food and Wine Editors Bryan and Sandra Shreve visited one of our favorite local taverns in San Antonio’s northeast side. Located at 1010 N Loop 1604 E, San Antonio, TX 78232. The Hoppy Monk is a family-owned tavern with a simple décor. My first impression is this is a clean establishment and perfect for an after-work beverage. Immediately, Sandra and I felt the warm atmosphere and was greeted by friendly staff. The customers appeared very comfortable and able to chat and enjoy each other without the typical crowded bar noise we all know too well. What sets The Hoppy Monk apart from the many other taverns or pubs in the city is the simple but unique archi-

tectural brilliance of design and space. The Hoppy Monk was built for the locals to gather and sit in an old-world look with communal tables and benches and small intimate tucked away tables. Unlike the corporate restaurants that plague San Antonio, The Hoppy Monk feels European with a lot of attention to details focusing on the taps and the enormous variety of craft beers and spirits. We met the manager, Mr. Fabrice Bouet, and was pleasantly pleased with his friendliness and hospitality. His French accent was a fun experience to chat with about the taps (I believe around 48), and the pride the staff takes in marketing local craft beers. Some may think there is just bartenders pulling the taps, but I would believe there has to be a cicerone on staff. The Hoppy Monk is the place to

experiment with unique flavors and spirits, and explore drinks found in both Europe and South America to include infusions of Agave, exotic spices, and herbs. There is also a definite executive chef somewhere behind the scenes with appetizers and entrées that you

will not find in a corporate pub or tavern. The ribeye sandwich with provolone, wild arugula basil aioli and grilled onions with a side of fries is a perfect sharable perfectly done by the cooking staff. If you are in the mood for something a bit different, you may want to try the rabbit tacos dorados or the duck in purgatory. The menu wel-

comes nearly every foodie who seeks quality and originality in many unique cuisines. The Hoppy Monk is local, and where you and I can sit and enjoy a craft beer on tap or a unique spirit without wait staff hurrying you to turn the table to the next customer. The food is awesome and worth exploration! Check out their menu at https://thehoppymonk.com/.

2022 is the year of recovery and new beginnings making San Antonio alive again. 2022 needs to be the year we thank our neighbors who work and sacrifice in the service industry. Thank you, Ms. Cierra Flores, for the friendly service at The Hoppy Monk. You are awesome! As always read SA Monthly Magazine, share, tip your wait staff, and support small businesses.

Winter Wines by Kuhlman Cellars With colder temperatures finally here, our food tends to get more substantial. So should our wine. Get cozy with full-bodied wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux blends, Australian Shiraz, Argentinian Malbec, and California Zinfandel. Even a light-bodied red like Sangiovese goes beautifully with winter favorites like chicken pot pie and a nice Viognier will balance the spiciness of gumbo. Roussanne goes nicely with buttery roasted chicken.

A few of our favorites this winter are full bodied red wines like Kuhlman Cellars 2017 Ignis, 2017 AstÈries, and 2017 Barranca. All three go well with hearty winter dishes or are perfect to enjoy while curled up by the fire. Ignis, a blend of Tempranillo, Malbec, and Cabernet Sauvignon, is a fan-favorite and recently won gold and Reserve Texas Class champion at the Houston Rodeo Wine Competition. The 2017 AstÈries is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec and offers an aroma of dark black cherry and plum. The 2017 Barranca is full of black currant and

baking spice flavors and is a perfect choice for beef stew, pot roast, and braised ribs. Shop them all at kuhlmancellars.com. Shipping is included for Texas orders over $129.

Since 2010, January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention month. It has been a time to acknowledge those experiencing enslavement and those who have escaped. Although slavery is commonly thought to be a thing of the past, human traffickers generate hundreds of billions of dollars in profits by trapping millions of people in horrific situations around the world, including here in the U.S. Traffickers use violence, threats, deception, debt bondage, and other manipulative tactics to force people to engage in commercial sex or to provide labor or services against their will. The statistics, although can be hard to decipher which are the creditable sources. They all agree the impact on victims is staggering. Crystal Sepulveda, a local

San Antonio woman has been working with victims of trafficking for the past five years. In her roles as a director of a shelter, a residential treatment administrator to being a director of an Austin drop in and advocacy team with SAFE Alliance, she has seen firsthand what gaps victims experience on a daily basis and how businesses can step up to help. What can any business do to look for red flags of trafficking and stop it in its tracks? As a business owner, you cannot see what you do not know what to look for. Learning the red flags of trafficking is a step closer to helping someone get free from this abuse. You can learn about Texas requirements for businesses to help stop trafficking to include specific signage for potential victims to see. If you

need help finding or creating signs, please let SAFE know. You can get training from a SAFE’s CARES team about the signs of trafficking your specific business will encounter and how to respond. Saving a space in your business to hire survivors of trafficking and partnering with reputable organizations looking to get their client’s hired in trauma informed work environments. Donating your services to a local organization’s clients. Gaps in the services are often haircuts, resume reviews, work force training, new clothing, housing and utility assistance. Creating and networking with other businesses to create a local network of safe spaces for survivors and/ or

join anti trafficking coalitions. The Texas Businesses against trafficking provides resources for business owners and a platform to connect. Lastly, listen and believe when someone or your employee says that they are being trafficked. Suppling your staff with the correct information and resources so they can help others. SAFE CARES provides custom presentations and trainings virtually. They can provide signs and assistance with policy review to ensure you are doing all you can as a business owners. They are a survivor led team as well with a variety of experiences. You can contact Crystal Sepulveda at Csepulveda@ safeaustin.org ; (210) 573-7401 to get connected to resources or connected to a SAFE CARES member.

Deposition anxiety? 5 Things to Remember About Depositions rectly from the witnesses and and experts of the opposing side. These are generally conducted in person, however many have been conducted remotely, via Zoom, due to the COVID-19 virus.

For many people just hearing that you have a deposition can cause a lot of anxiety. Itís probably on many peopleís list of things theyíd least like to do. What is a deposition? Generally speaking, a deposition is an opportunity for the attorneys to ask questions di-

Deposition testimony is exactly the same as testifying in a courtroom trial. However, there are usually only the attorneys, a court reporter, and sometimes a videographer present. The parameters for what can be asked are pretty broad. However, your attorney is allowed to make (limited) objections such as privilege and form, and they can intervene, for example, if the opposing counselís questions are simply to harass you. Because there is no judge present, the objections are recorded by the court reporter and can be ruled upon by a judge at a later date. Here are five things to remember: Tell the truth. This may seem obvious, but if the other side catches you in a lie, or making an inconsistent statement, it can significantly impact your case;

Listen to the question and simply answer it. Another obvious one right? Youíd be surprised how many people want to give long-winded explanations, which are inevitably followed up with a lot more (unnecessary) questions; Donít be afraid to ask the attorney to repeat a question. This can come up in a couple of situations. Sometimes the witness is simply nervous and doesnít want to ask for the question to be repeated. Another scenario is when the attorney asking the question is deliberately asking a compound or confusing question. Your attorney can help by intervening in this situation, but donít be afraid to ask for clarification if you donít understand exactly what you are being asked; Keep your cool. Listen closely to the questions asked and donít let them fluster you regardless of their attitude. Because you are being recorded by a court reporter, and sometimes a videographer, your answers are considered testimony, and they can be played back later at trial. Obviously, you donít want the jury to see you loose your cool; and Lastly, donít be afraid to ask to take a break. I have never

seen a situation where a person wanted to take a break during a deposition and the opposing side objected. As long as you are making a reasonable request, it shouldít be a problem. The reality is, most of the time, the opposing side wants to take a break as well. Above all, listen to your attorney. While the above information may give you some insight on what to expect, it is no substitute for the advice of your attorney. Hopefully, you never get deposed, but if you do, the above information may help you be a little less anxious. Philip A. Perez The Law Office of Philip A. Perez, P.L.L.C. What’s in a Resolution?

What’s in a Resolution?

Ok. New Years resolutions. How many times have you kept yours. Thereís an incredible amount of science behind New Years resolutions. A landmark study in 1988 showed 88% of resolutions are broken in a week. Let’s understand why. Resolutions involve habits BOTH breaking them AND making them. It takes about 3-4 weeks of steady “stick-to itiveness”

(I looked it up and yes it”s a word) to make a habit and breaking one takes serious work and even longer in undoing nerve wiring in the brain. Takes months sometimes and even years. So why do we see January 1 as a “new chance?” Ancient Rome is where the tradition of January 1 being the beginning of the new year worshiping the god Janus hence the name January. It is where the length of day equals night in the vernal equinox. The Babylonians 4000 years ago had the tradition in keeping of a promise in the new year meant the gods would favor them, not far

Most New Years resolutions are based on desire to change a behavior from what we think 4000 years later. It’s really not clear where the tradition comes from. Most New Years resolutions are based on desire to change a behavior based on lack of self control and that’s why they fail. Losing weight (stop eating pleasurably,) stop drinking, smoking, gambling, drugs etc (self medicating pleasures,) even to get out of debt and stop over-spending all are based on a pleasure hormone reward system in the brain called Dopamine and is extremely hard to change that pathway in the behavior that raises it. Others like getting organized or gaining wealth etc. are based on lack of procrastination and also difficult. It takes years sometimes to reword the brain away from all these thought processes that we’ve allowed to continue for years. Is it all doom or gloom? No! For instance I will share my personal story. In 2017 I was 300lbs and made the resolution to lose weight and cure my diabetes and bad health. After 13 years of obesity and failed New Years Resolutions finally I stayed with it. Now, it took me over a year into 2018 to finish the weight loss resolution losing 162lbs

but bound and determined I stayed in the game, finally getting it done. Why did it suddenly stick? No idea. I was just tired enough and determined enough. I just finally wanted it enough. All of this editorial is really to convince you to fulfill your dreams and focus on whatís important and to convince you to not give up on yourself. It’s to tell the truth that no it’s not easy. It will not get easier. It is though, worth the touchdown line once you cross it. I wish each and every one of you blessings beyond belief and the power and will to move mountains. No matter how big or how small your dream is. You. Can. Do. It. What’s my resolution? I don’t make them anymore hahaha. That was really hard work just accomplishing that one. I’m just trying now to keep it off. Lol. Blessings to all. Happy New Year.

Build upon last year! Build upon last year...That’s the key phrase to starting 2022 no matter what you’re doing. You may have followed a program and reached a certain level in your fitness journey where you were happy with the progress thus far. Then the holidays hit. And it seems everything you worked for went out the window. That’s why building upon last year works. So you attended too many parties and had too many indulgences. The beginning of the year is a time to reset your body and start fresh. You may have a few extra pounds on you, like me, but your body will have muscle memory and as soon as you get back on your exercise and normal eating routine, that muscle memory will kick in. Most of the time, your body will respond even better and faster because it’s craving health and proper nourishment. But you also needed a break mentally from following your normal routine, so the holiday break was good for your body’s reset.

However, now it’s time to get back on track and remember all those goals you accomplished last year. How far you got and how you’re going to crush those fitness goals this new year. 2022 is about improving and being just a little but better than last year. Did you run a 5K or 10K last year? This year, let’s think about shooting for a 20K or half marathon. Did you religiously attend your Orange Theory or other gym classes last year when you were supposed to? Let’s add an extra 15 minutes of stretching, ab work, or extra strength work once or twice a week to keep you mobile and keep tricking your body so it doesn’t get used to the routine and slow down your progress. Last year I finally completed my second Ironman race in Cozumel. My goal was to finish the swim in an hour, the bike in six hours and the run in four hours. Because of COVID and so many races getting cancelled, I trained for two years for this Ironman. The first time I finished it

Last year I finally completed my second Ironman race in 2019, it took me thirteen hours and fifty-nine minutes. Two years later, in 2021, I finished in eleven hours and forty-four minutes! I shaved off a whole two hours and fifteen minutes from my last race on the same course! For weeks, I was on cloud nine and couldn’t believe what just happened. But I had set the goals and went for them. I finished the swim in 1:03, the bike in 6:03 and the run in 4:17, essentially crushing those goals I had set for myself. I also learned a lot from my race and about how my body reacts to endurance race stresses. I am working on a new plan to overcome those stresses and get faster. Yes, I would love to qualify for the Ironman World Championships, but ultimately if I can just improve upon last year, and race smarter, that’s what I am aiming for. Take care of the body and it will take care of you. I posted several photos from my race. One is the exit point from the 2.4 mile swim (in Cozumel it’s actually a little shorter),

another photo is from the 112 (actually more like 113 miles in Cozumel) mile bike course, and another photo is from the run course. The running photos are the ones that KILL me!! Running is my peace, love and tranquility but you COULDN'T tell that from the look of shear pain and suffering on my face! I have this thing about always being ready for the camera. Haha! Not on an Ironman. I hardly ever spotted the photographers before they spotted me and took the most unflattering pictures! So, here’s goal number two for 2022. Not only do I want to shave time off my Ironman (eleven hours or faster), but I want to look less miserable in my running photos! I swear running is my happy place most of the time and I’d like to have it look a little more that way even if every bone and muscle in my legs hurt.

So in 2022, let’s train harder, stronger, smarter and improve on what we accomplished last year. I believe in you and I believe in me.

A New Year to revisit your Dreams SKIES THE LIMIT

Every day is a new day to start over. Each year is a new chance to revisit your Dreams and Goals. Our lives have changed forever during this pandemic but don’t let these changes place you in a negative state of mind. Use these challenging times to revisit your dreams and goals. I’ve had to do the same. I recently did an interview for a magazine called Aspioneer Magazine Flying High Women Leaders of 2021. As I begin answering the publisher’s questions, I began to revisit my Dreams, Passion and Goals again. These Dreams and Goals have been lying dormant and I have been moving in slow motion towards my goals almost at a frozen state, due to my circumstances, yet still moving forward. Quitting is not an option for me! With each blow that life brings to knock me down, I rise with a stronger comeback. Life can knock us down, it’s up to us to get back up and keep going. There is a Giant and a Hero within all of us. We are the only ones that keep that Giant down. It’s up to us to release that Giant - Hero. As I always say “Health is Wealth” without your health you have nothing. Without your health you can’t continue living a productive life. That is why I always preach a healthy lifestyle following a proper nutrition plan along

with exercise. We all need good weight bearing exercises to keep our bones strong along with strengthening the muscles that surround our joints for mobility and function. “If you don’t use it, you lose it”!! I realized at an early age that being active along with proper nutrition was going to lead me to a more productive lifestyle with endurance for longevity. In order for me to become an asset and pursue my Passion in helping others, I became a Professional in the Fitness Industry and complimented it by becoming a licensed therapist with my associate degree in Physical Therapy and also attained my certification in A4M anti-aging and Sports Medicine. “Make a commitment to yourself and stay committed to your goal. A Quote from the book “Leading in Tough Times” by John Maxwell. If you do what you should only when you feel like it, you won’t keep your commitments. My friend Ken Blanchard says. “When you’re interested in something, you do it only when it’s convenient. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results.”

If you refuse to give in to excuses, no matter how good they may sound or how good they will make you feel in the moment, you will keep moving forward. It’s never too late to pursue your Dreams and goals. KFC Founder said; just because you took longer than others, doesn’t mean you failed. I started KFC at 65. Revisit your Dreams and Goals. What is your Dream? What are your goals to manifest that Dream? Write them down and facilitate that creative mind, take that risk and make it happen “SKIES THE LIMIT.” My Passion and Dream is to continue Empowering and Inspiring others. To be the wind beneath their wings. Leading by example by making a path to open doors for others to follow at any age. My goal for competitors is to build Champions with a Champion mentality to set a positive example for others. We RISE when we help others RISE. My business motto continues to be SKIE: S – Speak life into others K – Know your purpose I - Inspire others E – Empower others

Reforma Norte 24 Santa Maria Tonanzintla San Andrés Cholula Puebla

Come visit and experience the beautiful Club Ecuestre Santa Maria

Armando Terrón Zenteno

Club Ecuestre Santa Maria

Thank You Armando Terrón Zenteno for all your support for my new passion! While visiting Cholula, Puebla, Mexico, my beautiful hometown, I had the honor to meet Armando Terrón Zenteno, owner of Club Ecuestre Santa Maria. Armando has changed the lives of many people around the world and has helped people with disabilities through, what many call, his horse therapy. I was introduced to Armando by Lic. Raymundo Cuautli, a very successful attorney in San Andrés Cholula. I admire the passion and love Lic. Raymundo has for his horses. He invited me to go horseback riding, along with Armando, during my visit, and for the first time in my life, I rode a horse. After a four-hour ride enjoying the beauty of these prestigious animals, along with the most incredible sunset I had ever seen, I have now discovered a new beautiful passion in my life, as well. Armando tells me that, as a young boy, he always had this great love for horses. At the age of 13 years old, he went with his father to a ranch to go horseback riding. He was immediately drawn to the horses, and for the first time, his father saw the love he was beginning to feel for these horses. After that, Armando's father bought him his first horse. Later in life, Armando turned his love for horses into a business that

he could share with his friends and the public. People would come from all over the city to ride the horses. During this time, Armando showed a young, handicapped boy, Salvador, how to ride horses. It was a day he will never forget. He saw the effect that the horse had on Salvador, and how happy and at ease Salvador became around the horses. In time, he bought more horses, and as time went on, more friends came by wanting to rent his horses. His business started to grow. He remembers having to educate himself to learn more about the care and maintenance of horses. He talked to veterinarians. He had to learn how to clean horses, groom horses, make sure they had a suitable environment, learn how they feed and graze, have regular farrier care, and basically, learn everything that had to do with the maintenance of horses. Later, he was invited to take classes on chemotherapy, alongside persons fighting cancer, or those with special disabilities, so he could teach them how to ride horses as therapy. He worked with the local

government and other clients to fulfill this very special dream of providing horse therapy. Today, he has a business with more than 50 horses. He organizes horseback riding events. He teaches classes on how to ride horses, and also, on how to compete in some of the biggest competitions all throughout Mexico. He buys and sells horses, while still taking care of other horses that belong to his clients that share his passion and love for horseback riding. The first time I visited Club Ecuestre Santa Maria, I noticed the love, passion and dedication he has for horses, especially the training and devotion to the children and adults with special needs. I remember when he first took me horseback riding, I was expecting to ride with someone who would have control of the horse. I had never ridden before, how was I to know how to direct the horse? He surprised me by saying I would be in control of the horse. He said, “Trust me. You will guide the horse. You are in charge.” I have to admit, for the first time in my life, I was a little scared. The last thing I needed was to fall off a horse. Thanks to Armando giving me the confidence to do this, I am proud to say that after about ten minutes, I was riding the horse by myself, taking control, and really enjoying it. Thank you, Armando, for your excellent teaching skills, and for giving me the confidence I needed to ride and guide this horse. It is definitely a moment I will never forget, riding this majestic horse, being surrounded by the beautiful mountains, nature all around me, and breathing that wonderful, clean mountain air while watching the most beautiful, spectacular sunset of my beautiful San Andrés Santa Maria. It gave peace to my soul, and I can't remember a time when I felt more relaxed. Armando is happily married to his lovely wife, Alejandra, and they have two beautiful daughters, Triana, eight years old, and Lucía, two years old. They, as well, share his passion for horses, and they also are avid horseback riders. They like to go horseback riding as a family. Their mission is to pass the knowledge and love they've had for horses throughout these many years to others. They currently have 58 horses, and they expect to have 80 horses by

the end of the year. The business continues to grow. They have new acquisitions, and they plan on bringing in new classes, new instructors, and more people with the right experience to continue their growth. They are currently planning new tours throughout Mexico. Armando’s goal for his clients is for them to fall in love and gain a new passion in their lives for the love of horses. He hopes his clients will take with them the best experience from Club Ecuestre Santa Maria that will keep them wanting to come back to Mexico for many years to come. Come visit and experience the beautiful Club Ecuestre Santa Maria in Santa Maria Tonanzintla, San Andrés Cholula, Puebla. The town is surrounded by 365 of the most magnificent churches in the world, which is something they are well known for, as well as their traditional cultural heritage, their excellent food and their stunning natural environment, which makes this very special place paradise on earth. There is so much to do and experience at Club Ecuestre Santa Maria. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2022? JOIN ME ON MY NEXT TOUR! (210-240-5200) Armando states that the tour includes eight hours of local horseback riding, with breaks in between, so horses can get the rest they need. Guests can take this time to eat lunch, drink refreshments, and socialize with new friends. It is a great time for everyone! Thank you, Armando, for making me feel at home the very first time I visited your hacienda. Although, I don't drink, I enjoyed some great tequila in the spirit of their culture, and among the company of friends. The experience I had at your hacienda was incredible, and I cannot wait to visit again! I invite everyone to go visit Club Ecuestre Santa Maria. The best advertising one can ever have is through wordof-mouth by their clients, and Club Ecuestre Santa Maria clients share their experiences on many social platforms. Port A Isn’t Just for the Summer! By Jeanne Albrecht, owner/travel agent/Cruise & Tour Center Big tip: visit Port A in September or early October. OK, maybe not an earthshattering revelation, but it’s worth mentioning. Weather is still summer-like with highs in the 90s, but you aren’t frying in our typical 100+ July/August heat. Biggest bonus: the crowds are significantly less because kids are back in school which is great when looking for a spot on the beach AND when dining out in any of Port A’s 50+ restaurants. You may even luck out and get a better rate on your rental since rates tend to drop after Labor Day. Visited this last September when we headed

down there with two of sons and their families. When you decide to head to the coast and start researching Airbnbs, you will be amazed and perhaps overwhelmed by the amount of rentals. I strongly recommend renting any of the properties managed by Sway. When I started looking, I had a strenuous list of requirements: free-standing house (to avoid condo noise and congestion) with 3 bedrooms (with King or Queen-size beds), 3 bathrooms, private pool, close to the beach and fabulous reviews

from former renters. I found it all with a Sway property called Stay Salty. It was perfect because it fit all requirements PLUS these bonuses: fabulously stocked big kitchen (actually had sharp knives, appliances beyond the usual, and gourmet utensils like garlic press), LOTS of parking, private pool had a 10-foot long shallow lip (less than a foot deep) which is great for little kids, two BBQ pits, close to golf cart rentals, communicative owners, office space with printer and big front porch with lots

of seating. Full disclosure: I was NOT paid by owners to write this review, nor did I get any kind of discount when renting. I rented it just like you would, but I think it’s worth sharing! Sway Facebook; Instagram. Few other tips: bring a canopy for beach days; rent a golf cart; visit the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center—beautiful free nature walk; visit chamber website for festivals and concerts.

To Cruise or Not to Cruise—That is the Question (at least for some) By Jeanne Albrecht, owner and travel agent, Cruise & Tour Center travel@yourvacationhq.com Cruising is back in the news with the latest decision by the CDC to raise the travel warning for cruise ships to Level 4. How are my travel clients responding to this? I am not hearing much! As we speak, I have several clients cruising in the Caribbean on Holland America; five families and four couples that just got off a 7-night cruise out of Galveston to Mexico on Royal Caribbean; and another three clients who sailed in Alaska last September. All had the same reaction: it was fabulous because the staffs on the ship were incredibly attentive and they have never seend the ships so clean! My husband and I (and three other couples) are ready to board a RCL ship on Feb. 14 out of Ft. Lauderdale to cruise to Panama, Costa Rica, Cartagena and Aruba for 11 nights, and can’t wait! And yes, I did have three couples cancel a cruise for the week after Christmas, but that wasn’t because of cruising; it was because many of their ports were demanding unrealistic conditions for cruisers to visit. They are wisely taking the Future Cruise Credit and rebooking their cruise if they are veteran cruisers, they In the first month of 2022, 242 cruise ships across 68 brands will operate around the world, the highest number of ships to sail since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to data compiled by Cruise Industry News. Royal Caribbean will send off 20 vessels, the most of any brand, while Carnival and MSC Cruises will operate 17 and 13 ships,

respectively, this month. The cruise industry is hitting back at what CLIA called the "perplexing" decision "The decision … is particularly perplexing considering that cases identified on cruise ships consistently make up a very slim minority of the total population onboard -- far fewer than on land -- and the majority of those cases are asymptomatic or mild in nature, posing little to no burden on medical resources onboard or onshore," the association said in a statement. "No setting can be immune from this virus -- however, it is also the case that cruise provides one of the highest levels of demonstrated mitigation against the virus. Cruise ships offer a highly controlled environment with science-backed measures, known testing and vaccination levels far above other venues or modes of transportation and travel, and significantly lower incidence rates than land." CLIA used a host of data to back its assertions, including that vaccination rates onboard cruise ships are upwards of 95% -- significantly higher than the overall U.S. population which is about 62% -- and that cruise is also the only industry in the U.S. travel and tourism sector that requires both vaccinations and testing for crew and guests. "The latest data show that even with higher rates of testing, the cruise industry continues to achieve significantly lower rates of occurrence of Covid-19 -- 33% lower than on-

shore," CLIA said. Royal Caribbean Group also put out a statement acknowledging that the omicron variant had increased cases onboard ships, but that the vast majority of those cases "had no symptoms or only mild symptoms" and that none of the omicron cases "have been severe or needed to be taken to a hospital. These figures are a result of almost everyone onboard having been vaccinated and having a negative test before boarding." "We don't like to see even one case, but our experience is a fraction of the comparable statistics of virtually any other comparable location or industry," said Royal Group CEO Richard Fain, who also pointed out that cruising, unlike airlines or hotels, test and report their passengers, putting cruise lines under much more scrutiny than other industries. Early on December 30, Royal Caribbean Group (parent company of cruise lines that include Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, and Silversea) issued a press release aimed at investors touting that of 1.1. million guests the company had carried since restarting operations in June, only 1,745 guests had tested positive for COVID-19, most with mild or no symptoms, 44 of which required hospitalization, according to the cruise company. That is only 0.0159

Later that day, following the new CDC advice, the industry was collectively crying “no fair.” “The cruise industry is the only industry in the U.S. travel and tourism sector that is requiring both vaccinations and testing for crew and guests,” the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said in a statement. The association called the raised CDC warning “particularly perplexing considering that cases identified on cruise ships consistently make up a very slim minority of the total population onboard—far fewer than on land—and the majority of those cases are asymptomatic or mild in nature, posing little to no burden on medical resources onboard or onshore.” CLIA consists of more than 50 domestic and international cruise lines, including some of the largest and most wellknown lines, such as Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Cunard Line, Disney Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Seabourn, Silversea Cruises, and Windstar Cruises.
