Cancer tackled in Women’s day celebration in Calbayog By AVAH EBALDE CATBALOGAN City -- Six types of gynecological cancer were among the subject tackled in Calbayog City, Samar as part of the celebration this Women’s Month. St. Camillus Gynecologist Dr. Flora Rosales explained that gynecological cancer is any cancer that starts in a woman’s reproductive organs. The six gynecologic cancers begin in different places within a woman’s pelvis, which is the area below the stomach and in between the hip bones. Each gynecologic cancer is unique, with different signs and symptoms, different risk factors, and different prevention strategies, Rosales said. All women are at risk for gynecologic cancers, and risk increases with age. When gynecologic cancers are found early, treatment is most effective, she added. The five main types of cancer that affect a woman’s reproductive organs are the cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvae. As a group, they are referred to as gynecologic cancer. The sixth type of gynecologic cancer is the very rare fallopian tube cancer. Rosales said the best way to avoid cancer is to have a regular check-up with ob-gynecologist, sexual abstinence, and being faithful. She said that other gynecologic cancer like cervical cancer is caused by being unfaithful. Cervical cancer begins with abnormal changes in the cervical tissue. Infection with human papilloma virus (HPV) is the cause of almost all cervical cancers. Other known risk factors for cervical cancer include early sexual contact, multiple sexual partners, cigarette smoking, HIV infection, and a weakened immune system. The doctor informed the women, “Take good care of yourselves, as women who have more responsibilities, you deserve to be healthy.”

Track down ex-cop killers By RICKY J. BAUTISTA, News & Features

PNP Director Soria

CATBALOGAN City -- Police Chief Superintendent Elmer R. Soria, Regional Director of Police Regional Office 8 (PRO8) ordered an “immediate arrest” to the two gunmen who killed a retired intelligence police officer in Catbalogan City last Tuesday. “This is a very unfortunate incident. Whatever the motive of the perpetrators is, the attack is very uncivil and cold-blooded, and deserves appropriate police action to give justice to the victim and his family,” Soria told his men during Monday’s PRO8 Command Conference. The police official said he has alerted PNP investigating units to join the hunt for the two gunmen who shot and killed Severino “Benny” Solis, a retired Police Senior Inspector in Catbalogan City. Probers said the slain ex-cop Solis had just finished playing tennis at around 7:15 A.M. at the Capitol Tennis Court located behind the Samar provincial capitol when the two unidentified men treacherously shot him from behind. Responding policemen conducted dragnet operations and alerted nearby units to possibly intercept the suspects while

COMELEC trains 10,000 tutors as BEI members TACLOBAN CITY – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is now training in the region more than 10,000 teachers that will serve as Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs) in the upcoming May 2013 elections. Comelec Assistant Regional Director Veronico Petalcorin said the training for BEIs, which will man the region’s 5,135 clustered precincts, has started during the first week of March and will be completed before April. “We are on track with all our preparations for election officers and teachers. The training for BEIs is about 60 to 70% complete,” Petalcorin said. The Comelec regional office earlier trained the pool of trainers for BEIs, composed of provincial election supervisors, election officers, and board of certifiers. “The training is almost the same in 2010 but we have to make sure that teachers are well-versed on the use of precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machines,” he said. The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will certify BEI members if they are capable of operating the PCOS machines for the automated polls as one PCOS machine is intended for each of the clustered precincts. In 2010, the region posted a 93% passing rate among the 9,704 BEI who took both the written and practical examinations, according to DOST Regional Director Edgardo Esperancilla. The DOST expects a higher passing rate this year with the intensive training and some BEI members are already aware of the tech-

nology. The BEI is composed of a chairman and a poll clerk, who are public school teachers. The board conducts the voting and counting of votes in their respective polling places, acts as deputies of the Commission in the supervision and control of the election in their assigned polling places. Eastern Visayas has 2,576,250 registered voters in 4,390 barangays. The Comelec has identified 17,328 precincts clustered into 5,135. At least 3,773 will be used as voting centers in May 13, 2013 polls. Of the 5,135 clustered precincts, 2,017 are in Leyte province; 1,076 in Samar; 690 in Northern Samar; 605 in Eastern Samar; 578 in Southern Leyte; and 169 in Biliran. Each of the merged precincts has two BEI members from the Department of Education. They will be augmented by two members, each representing the two accredited political parties. Meanwhile, Petalcorin said they have been regularly meeting with police and military officials to ensure peace and orderly elections on May. “We are closely the monitoring the situation in Samar province because it seems that violence is just normal (there) every campaign period and on Election Day,” Petalcorin said. Samar has been tagged as election hotspot due to its past electoral history of violence, presence of private armed groups (PAGs), and operations of the rebel group, the New People’s Army. (Sarwell Q. March 2013 SWS survey results for Senatoriables

TEAM PNoy senatorial bet Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero dropped from Number 2 position in the Social Weather Stations (SWS) March survey to Number 4, losing 12 percentage points, with him claiming that he was ganged up on in the smear campaign launched against him, adding that the demolition efforts directed against him already are being reflected in the latest survey results. Escudero, who had 62 percent in February now has only 48 percent of the intended vote. Also taking big drops in the SWS survey ratings are Team PNoy’s senatorial bets Grace Poe Llamanzares who placed Number 6, but is now down at Number 11. But even as Sen. Loren Legarda stayed at first place, she lost 5 percentage points from the SWS February survey, obtaining 59 percent from 64 percent.

Cynthia Villar who was in solo 4th place last month with a vote of 53 percent, slid to 48 percent and now ranks from 5 to 7, tied with Sen. Koko Pimentel. Alan Peter Cayetano jumped to number 2, with the same but with the same 58 percent of intended votes. The latest survey results showed Legarda of Team PNoy leading the tally as choice of 59 percent of respondents, followed by Cayetano with 57 percent, with United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) candidate Rep. JV Ejercito in third place and Escudero in fourth place at 48 percent; UNA’s Nancy Binay, Team PNoy’s Cynthia Villar and Sen. Koko Pimentel were also tied with 47 percent in the survey. Ejercito moved up the ladder strongly from 9th place in the previous survey with his rating adding six points from 42 percent in the February survey.

TRACK from page 1 ... elements of the Samar Provincial Public Safety Company were also deployed to join the pursuit. Investigators are now conducting forensic examination on the three slugs recovered from the victim’s body and four spent cartridges from a caliber .45 pistol that were recovered from the scene while police have already came up with a composite facial sketch of the suspects for possible identification by witnesses. Solis was a highly decorated and well-respected police officer and regarded as a folk hero in Catbalogan City where he spent most of his law enforcement career. He gained prominence and hero status when he shot and killed a mentally-deranged man who runs amuck in downtown Catbalogan in the late 80’s. As seasoned investigator, he handled and solved several high profile cases in Catbalogan City in a colorful law enforcement career spanning three decades. He was the Intelligence Officer of Samar Police Provincial Office when the PNP launched the first serious police operations against Private Armed Groups (PAGs) in Samar’s first district on January 25, 2005 when he led a composite team from the PNP, Navy Seals and National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA) leading to an armed encounter with high profile criminals. Aside from capturing several lawless criminals, drug suspects and communist-terrorist leaders, Solis also served as Chief of Police in Daram, Pinabacdao and Hinabangan towns in Samar prior to his retirement from the service in 2009. Police omni-presence reaches remote barangays

CATBALOGAN City — Samar police pushes for the PNPs omni-presence or the availability of the PNP in each barangay. Samar Police Provincial Director Eusebio Mejos reported to the local media that in Calbayog City, the police are required to visit seven barangays a day. This is to identify the problems in the barangay and address peace and order concerns. To augment their presence in the barangays, the PNP Samar started deploying personnel to Sta. Margarita, Matuguinao and Calbayog City. They are also getting security support from the Philippine Army. He also asked the religious sector, media, and the people of Samar to work hand and hand, and he said “Let us help each other, and the PNP is always ready to do our part.” The director added that if each and every one of us will help, it is not impossible for us to achieve SAFE 2013 election. the first quarter,” she said. Director Zarraga further informed that as of press time, the Agency has already disbursed a total of Eight Million Ninety Six Thousand Seven Hundred Forty Nine Pesos (P8,096,749.0) from its Cereal Procurement Fund (CPF), the financial source of NFA’s palay buying operations. “Even if we have surpassed our targets in the first quarter, we are still aiming to procure more palay in the succeeding days and months, ” Director Zarraga underscored. Under NFA’s palay procurement program, the Agency buys palay at the current government support price of Seventeen Pesos (P17.00) per kilogram, clean and dry or those with fourteen percent (14%) moisture content and “Purity A” level. Palay deliveries falling below this specification can also be accommodated subject to buying price adjustments computed in accordance with the current NFA Equivalent Net Weight (ENW) table, Manager Zarraga said. On top of the basic support price, additional incentives are given to the palay farmers. For every kilogram of palay sold to the Agency, there is an additional Twenty centavos (P.20) called drying incentive and a delivery incentive fee of Twenty Centavos (P.20) or Ten Pesos ( P10.00) per kilogram based on the distance from the farm to the NFA buying station within zero (0) to ten (10) kilometers. This delivery incentive escalates as the distance of the farm to NFA buying station also increases. Moreover, farmer groups or cooperatives gain an add-on of Thirty Centavos (P.30) per kilogram of palay sold to the Agency as their Cooperative Development Incentive Fee (CDIF). The accumulated CDIF can be used by the concerned farmer cooperative to acquire post-harvest facilities. Director Zarraga is encouraging all palay farmers and farmer cooperatives to sell their produce to the Agency. She said that the Agency has simplified its requirements for its palay procurement program. The farmers’ passbooks are now free of charge with photo provided by NFA. Moreover, walk-in farmers now deliver a maximum of Two Hundred (200) bags. “One of the factors that contributed to the increase in NFA’s procurement accomplishment is the simplification of requirement,” Manager Zarraga added. “We also conducted Ugnayan or advocacy prior to harvest and closely coordinated with the Local Government Units (LGU), Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), National Irrigation Administration (NIA), farmers groups and barangay officials. Moreover, the Agency undertook close monitoring of palay harvests , timely positioned the necessary logistics and opened buying stations in strategic production areas. “This way, we are able to motivate and encourage the palay farmers to sell their produce to us,” Manager Zarraga said. A Pope for all

WEBSITE: www.issuu.com/samarweeklyexpress

Amid a multitude of church faithful and well-wishers and engulfed in a rousing applause and cheers, the Roman Catholic’s new supreme pontiff was officially installed into his papal office. As was earlier reported, the installation mass officiated by the recently elected Pope Francis of Buenos Aires, Argentina took place in the presence of over a million members of the Roman Catholic Church and tens of hundreds of delegates from different Christian sects, world leaders and political diplomats. On top of it, a sizeable number of representatives from various faiths like the Jews, Buddhists, Muslim and Islam came around to witness the inauguration of the 266th successor of St. Peter, the first successor of Christ in building the Church. Nothing pompous overwhelmed the historic event as it was earlier publicized by Vatican insider sources. Except for the anticipated presence of church and state dignitaries and affluent world entrepreneurs, the inauguration of Pope Francis was so far the greatest gathering in the Church’s happenings this year. The choice by the Jesuit Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio as his pontifical name was a driving point that spurred the people to excitement that he is a pope of all peoples, especially the underprivileged poor. In an appearance before about five thousand media and journalists few days ago, he also explained choosing Francis to be his name as he was also a man of peace regardless of political, religious and economic faction and affiliation. Pope Francis is a leader of Argentina’s Catholic Church who has been known in “promoting interfaith dialogue” and tightly embraces what he calls “what the Catholic faith should be about — an outward-reaching, bottom-up effort to improve lives, no matter what people’s faith.” A Buenos Airesx Rabbi Alejandro Avruj was quoted of describing the Pope as “the one who opened the cathedral of Buenos Aires for interfaith ceremonies, like when we prayed for peace and not one of those who waits for you to call them to participate in these events.” This is what made the people from across the globe think of Pope Francis as “truly the child of God.” It was likewise stated in another documentary about Pope Francis that there are Jews, Orthodox and other religious leaders, who thought that the new pope’s choice of Francis as his name has significant reference to the Italian town of Assisi, where now Blessed John Paul II began conferences encouraging interfaith dialogue and closer bonds among Christians, while a pope. This, among other high-impact unification programs of the church under Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, must be among the factors that drew them close to the people and respected them like they would God’s son, Jesus. Pope Francis is gaining such impetus being a pope for all people in the world.

Official campaign for local bets begin

The official campaign season for candidates running in local elections begins, today (March 29), but sad to say, campaigning on a Good Friday that is supposed to be devoted for self reflection is not allowed in this country, which is dominated by millions of Catholics. But hard-headed local candidates, still, displayed their Lenten Season greetings in tarpaulins, which are obviously aimed to show off their names in public, as their one way of campaigning. The Church and the Commission on Elections earlier reminded them to start their campaign on Black Saturday, and discouraged everyone to do it on Good Friday and Holy Thursday in observance of Holy Week. In the cities of Catbalogan and Calbayog, both in Samar province - there are still those who did not heed this call, and we already knew who are these people. They’re the ones who we shouldn’t vote, because we can’t trust these kind of persons in a public offices. By the way, the Comelec said there are about 44,532 local candidates running nationwide will also be under close scrutiny of the Commission under the nose of Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. And I expect the Chairman to be honest enough for all of his promises to monitor all election violators. In the past elections, no one has been charged in court despite numerous violations on elections laws has been recorded in the Philippines. The Commission has been very good, only in, media hypes, I and many Pinoys noticed that since the start. This time, however, I am giving the benefits of the doubts that the Commission can monitor and bring to court winning or losing bets if they’re found to be violated laws such as vote buying, early campaigning, illegal postering, mud slinging, resored to guns and goons, etcetera. Admittedly, it is very hard to watch the national candidates as well as the 18,000 local bets in the lower House, regions, provinces, cities, and towns. But I am crossing my fingers! Public should also help and be vigilant. I encourage them to have a watchfull eyes.

Hints and Traces By Fr. Roy Cimagala Education for life and beyond SCHOOLS are obviously a controlled environment. They are like greenhouses for the students. They have to be like that, since the students, like young, tender saplings, need a more favourable atmosphere for them to grow to maturity before facing the world on their own. In schools, the students are given a kind of pure nourishment of knowledge and other values to prepare them for the challenges in life. They need to be protected somehow from the very fluid if confusing realities of life in the meantime so they can develop the appropriate attitude and skills to be able to sort things out properly. One of the concerns that we, the elders, should all bear in mind is that the students should be formed in such a way that they can be weaned at the proper time and start to face the realities of life on their own, even if everyone of us always needs the help of everybody else and our education never ends. We need to see to it that they become fit and able to live meaningfully in the world. What should be avoided is to spoil them in the school environment such that they could only “survive” in controlled conditions and would be at a loss when they step out of school. In other words, the students should come out knowing more or less what their proper place and role are in society, so they can work in solidarity with others for the attainment of the common good. This will involve acquiring things that are both basic and general, applicable to all, on the one hand, and specific, attuned to the individual’s qualities and capabilities, on the other. And so the basic questions about man, like who and what he is, where he comes from, to where he is supposed to go, etc., should be made clear to them. The various implications of those questions, both in their theoretical and practical Republic of the Philippines REGIONAL TRIAL COURT 8th Judicial Region BRANCH 32 Calbayog City IN THE MATTER OF DECLARATION OFPRESUMPTIVE DEATH OF ABSENTE SPOUSE ENOPE CANONOY, ELSA E. LLADOCANONOY, Petitioner Special Proceedings No. 492 x----------------x ORDER

This is a verified petition for Declaration of Presumptive death of Absentee Spouse ENOPE S. CANONOY, filed on October 09, 2012, by petitioner, thru counsel, praying among others, that after due notice and hearing, the Court will render judgment declaring the petitioner’s absentee spouse ENOPE S. CANONOY, presumptively dead and granting petitioner the right to remarry without prejudice to the effect of reappearance of the absent spouse as provided for by the law. The petition reads: That the petitioner is of legal age, married, a Filipino, and with postal address at Brgy. Luna, Tagapul-an, Samar, that she is married to Enope S. Canonoy on December28, 2000 in Brgy. Luna, Tagapul-an, Samar according to the rites of the Church of Bishops of Suga-sa Tuluhu-an officiated by Msgr. Solomon Biore; that Petitioner an Enope S. ing that typhoon ”Caloy” is set to hit their place, petitioner’s husband Enope S. Canonoy, something in May 11, 2006 at around 10:00 o’clock in the evening, together with six (6) others, went to the sea of Brgy. Labangbaybay, Tagapul-an, Samar, to safe keep their fishing boat named El John Jules, that while trying to safe-keep the fishing boat in the open seas of Tagapul-an, Samar, petitioner’s husband Enope S. Canonoy and his six (6) other companions, never returned home that evening May 11, 2006, that on May 13, 2006, when typhoon ”Caloy” subsided, any three(3) of the seven (7) persons aboard the fishing boat were able to return, that from the accounts of one of the survivors named Alberto R. Catamora, the fishing boat was shattered to pieces while they were negotiating the sea of Brgy. Luna, Tagapul-an, Samar going to San Vicente. All of the passengers of the boat fell to the sea including Enope S. Canonoy, whom AlbertoR. Catamora saw to have clung to a piece of shattered boat material until the latter vanished from his view; that petitioner and the relatives of Enope S. Canonoy made exhaustive search and recovery efforts from May 13, 2006 up to May 15,2006on the coasts and seas of nearby island towns, and on the following weeks but no recovery of the body of Enope S. Canonoy was had, that petitioner went to the Police Station of Tagapul-an, Samar on May 16, 2006, to report the disappearance of her husband. She also went to DYOG Radyo ng Bayan Calbayog to air the fact of disappearance of her husband, that from the time Enope S. Canonoy sailed on the seas of Tagapul-an, Samar on May 11, 2012 at 10:00

aspects as they impact on the different areas and levels of human life, should be taken up. Along with this concern should be the effort to know each student personally, so his or her unique and peculiar qualities can be known and given due consideration in planning for each individual’s formation. In this regard, it is important that each student gets to have a mentor to guide him personally in an atmosphere of friendship and confidence. It’s where students feel a bit alienated in some areas that anomalies can arise—like misconceptions of basic values that can lead to bad practices, habits and vices later on. The formation in the school should try to cover not only the academic aspect, but also and more importantly, the human and spiritual aspects—like the development of basic virtues like humility, order, sincerity, etc., as well as, interpersonal and social skills, etc. The students should know how to cultivate their spiritual life, their relationship with God which ought to undergird their relationship with others. In the first place, they need to be aware between what is spiritual and what is material, what is eternal and what is temporal, etc., and the many implications these distinctions generate. Thus, they need to learn how to pray and grow in their spiritual life through the study of the right doctrine, recourse of the sacraments, development of virtues and the art of ascetical struggle, so indispensable in our life marked by weakness, temptations, and sin itself. They have to be taught how to deal with all kinds of situations and circumstances, favorable or not, advantageous or not. They have to learn how to develop convictions based on eternal truths as well as skills in flexibility to dynamic temporal factors and immunity to unavoidable negative elements. These are tough things to achieve, but as long as they are pursued as early as when both teachers and mentors on the one hand, and students on the other are able to undertake and receive such efforts, then we can expect good results. There’s obviously a need on the part of the school officials to monitor the development of the students, especially in the individual and personal level. Obviously the cooperation of parents is a must here. They, after all, are the primary teachers of their children, though they can delegate much of the dirty work to the schools. Thus, the healthy linkage between parents and schools is vital here. That connection has to be nourished in a continuing way. o’clock in the evening up to this time, petitioner, the absentee’s immediate family and their common children have absolutely no communication with absentee Enope S. Canonoy; Petitioner had earnestly and exhaustively made efforts in ascertaining her husband’s location and existence over the past six (6) years but of to no avail; that petitioner has well-founded belief that Enope S. Canonoy is already dead, such that his being totally unheard of and absent for over six (6) years runs counter to normal course of things for a husband to his wife on one hand, and for his being father to two (2) children on the other, had he been in fact living, more so since the circumstance of his disappearance is such that, it was in danger of death; that petitioner’s ordeal of being bound to her marriage with Enope S. Canonoy despite being and absentee spouse has been recognized by law such that Art. 41 of the Family Code grants the petitioner the right to institute a summary proceeding pursuant to Title XI of the Family Code of the Philippines, for the declaration of presumptive death of the absentee spouse for purposes of remarriage, if the latter had been absent for four (4) consecutive years and that the spouse present has a well-founded belief that the spouse was already dead, and that the lapse of over six (6) years after having last seen her husband in May 11, 2006 and the well-founded belief of the petitioner that her husband is already dead since there was absolutely no communication between them, and the circumstances of his disappearance is in danger of death, gives rights to the petitioner to seek for a judicial declaration from this Honorable Court, of the presump-

tive death of absentee spouse Enope S. Canonoy, thereby entitling her to remarry under the provisions of Article 41of the Family Code of the Philippines WHEREFORE, finding the petition to be sufficient in form and substance, notice is hereby given that this case is set for initial hearing on May 20, 2013 at 2:00 o’clock in the afternoon before this Court, at which date, time, and place, all persons who have objection thereto may file any opposition and show cause why the petition should not be allowed. Let this Order be published at the expense of the petitioner, once a week for three (3) consecutive weeks prior the above-setting in a newspaper of general circulation in the Province of Samar and in the City of Calbayog. Furnish copy of this Order together with a copy of the petition and all its annexes to the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG), 134 Amorsolo Street, Legaspi Village, Makati City, the Office of the City Prosecutor of Calbayog, the Office of the Clerk of Court, Calbayog City, the parties and their counsels, for their information and comments.

Man’s destiny is prosperity and victory LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… `For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, 1plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’… (Jeremiah 29:11, the Holy Bible). -ooo“NEGATIVE DISPOSITION” PULLING FILIPINOS DOWN: A famous columnist from a Manila newspaper is asking: “Why is the Philippines poor?” Citing a book on selfdevelopment entitled “The Secret”, the columnist concludes that it is because Filipinos have a “negative disposition”, so that “it is a matter of shifting our consciousness from poverty to that of wealth”. He maybe correct, but his perception is actually just the tip of the iceberg. Yes, it has something to do with “negative disposition”, but then, the real question is, why are many of our countrymen---and many in the world, in fact---pessimists and negative in their perception of many things in their lives? Why can’t people be positive instead? Why can’t they focus their thoughts on matters that will give them a victorious and successful life? Why are many people mired in negative thoughts, and are always filled with fears and doubts? The answer should be simple enough---they do not know who they really are, why they have been put here in this world in the first place, and what is the purpose in their lives. -oooMAN’S DESTINY IS PROSPERITY AND VICTORY: The truth is that most of humanity have been trained to fear and doubt, and to feel mediocre and useless. But fear and doubt and mediocrity and uselessness have not been destined to be the future of man. Rather, man’s destiny is prosperity. His future and that of his family are designed to be filled with hope and victory. From his birth, the promise to man has been that, he will have a full and abundant life, a life of importance, a life in a land filled with vineyards and olive groves, with milk and honey, with his barns filled to the brim, with his crops and animals always booming, a life where his enemies if any will be vanquished right before his very eyes even if he is less strong. In fact, when he was created, man was given power and authority to rule over everything here on earth. He was given everything he ever needed. He did not have to do anything to provide for himself. Everything had already been created for him, too, so he could live a life of pure joy and satisfaction. In fact, every good thing had already been paid for so man can enjoy them, even when he does not deserve them. So, why are many men and women poor and are abject failures? -oooWHAT IS SEPARATING MAN FROM PROSPERITY? One thing is certain: they have been separated from the promised prosperity, hope and victory. There is something that separates them now from a full and abundant life, from a life of importance, a life in a land with milk and honey, a life of power and satisfaction. Consequently, if they wish to rise above the poverty and the failure that are stalking them now, men must endeavor to understand what separated them from all these blessings and good things that have been promised them at birth, and work things out. I am sure it will not require a lot of thinking to find the answers. I am sure that employing just a little logic and reasoning will show the way for those who are really desirous of changing their lives. As it has been written, we must no longer conform to the patterns of this world, even as we renew our minds and attain the destiny that has been ours right from the very beginning. -oooREACTIONS? PNoy calls on people to emulate example of Jesus Christ MANILA President Benigno S. Aquino III joins the Filipino nation in the observance of the Holy Week and called on the people to emulate the example set forth by our Savior Jesus Christ. “Bilang mga tagasunod ni Kristo, nararapat lamang na tayo’y tumulad sa Kanyang mabuting ehemplo,” the Chief Executive said in his Lenten message issued on Wednesday. President Aquino asked his fellow Catholics and Christians to remember the great atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ for the sins of mankind. “Ngayong panahon ng Kuwaresma, ginugunita po natin ang natatanging halimbawa ni Hesukristo sa sangkatauhan. Nagkatawang-tao siya, nagpakumbaba, at iniligtas tayo sa kasalanan; naging huwaran Siya sa landas ng pagbubukas-palad, at wagas na pagmamahal sa kapwa,” he said. The Chief Executive emphasized that one of the great messages of the Holy Week celebration is sacrifice. “Wala na nga pong tutumbas sa sakripisyong ipinamalas ni Hesukristo. At kung tutuusin, dahil sa dakilang pag-aalay Niya ng buhay para sa kaligtasan natin, kakarampot na lamang ang kanyang hinihiling – ang mahalin at arugain ang ating kapwa. Makukuha pa ba nating ipagkait ito sa Kanya?.” the President noted. President Aquino said the Filipino nation is now succeeding in pushing for reforms in a bid to attain unity and progress. He also noted that the Filipinos continue to manifest God’s love and compassion through their charitable works.

He also called on the Catholic faithful and Christians to stand firm on our Christian faith to be able to attain our goal to transform the country into a progressive nation. “Ngayon pong Mahal na Araw, muling ipinapaalala sa atin ang halaga ng pagiging tanglaw sa isa’t isa, at ang liwanag na hatid nito sa buong bansa. Napakaganda na po ng mga nasimulan nating hakbang; at ngayong Semana Santa, patuloy nawa tayong makapagnilay kung paano pa mapapayabong ang mga butil ng pakikipagkapwa na ibinahagi sa atin ng Poong Maykapal.,” he said. The President also wished all Filipinos a peaceful and blessed celebration of Lent.
