Mayor's Message
Recreation employee's who ensure our parks are award-worthy, safe, and have safe equipment, run our community theater and arts programs, and work hard to make sure the Clearfield Aquatics & Fitness Center is the best facility around. It’s our police officers and dispatchers who work endless hours to keep us safe and deal with situations that no one should have to face. The list goes on and on, thank you to all of you!
It’s that time of year when we start looking back at all we are thankful for. My “Thank You” list starts out with all our residents who do so much to make Clearfield a wonderful place to live, work, and play. That may seem obvious, but it really hit home with me as we handed out our Yard of the Year awards at a recent city council meeting. So many people seem to have stopped caring about the appearance of their homes/ yards that our code enforcement officers can’t keep up with all the work. We can do all we can to beautify our major corridors, but it is in our neighborhoods where most of us feel connected. As I start thinking that everyone has stopped caring, I am reminded about the many, many people who work hard to keep their yards looking great. It was fun to award three of them, but the list could have been much longer. Thank you to these great people who help raise the appearance of their yards and their neighborhoods! My next thank you goes to our city staff. It never ceases to amaze me how much our employees

Serving as Mayor takes me away way too often from my day job that pays my bills and feeds my family, but I couldn’t think of a better place to lose myself in service. I truly do love each and every resident of Clearfield. So, thank you for being you and allowing me to serve you.

Aquatics & Recreation Help Wanted! Clearfield City is currently hiring lifeguards, head lifeguards, water safety instructors, and recreation staff for Jr. Jazz and the upcoming season. Winter Parking Enforcement From November 15th through the last day of February, parking on the street is prohibited between the hours of midnight and 5 a.m. This allows snowplow access to clear the streets and provide safer road conditions for drivers. Parking hours will be enforced in all weather, regardless of the presence of snow. Doing this ensures your cars don’t get damaged by our plows or other cars driving along slippery roads! We hope that you will help us out by parking in your driveways at night. Our plow drivers appreciate compliance with this ordinance, especially when we need to send the plows out on short notice. We know this is not always convenient, so thank you for your cooperation and help in keeping Clearfield streets clear.
Snowplow Priorities Check out the map for details on Clearfield City’s snowplow routes. We prioritize high-use streets over others, which include streets with the most traffic and denser residential roads. It’s helpful to keep in mind that just because we haven’t plowed your road yet, doesn’t mean we won’t get to it! In some cases, it can take more than 24 hours to plow the entire city with the trucks and staff we have on hand. We do our best to make sure you get wherever you’re going safely on our winter streets!

Time to Winterize Your Irrigation System As fall ends, it's time to tackle essential tasks around your home to prepare for the cold winter months. One often neglected chore is draining your irrigation system. Ignoring it can lead to freezing and cracking water lines and backflow assemblies, potentially causing costly repairs, flooding, and increased water bills.
Steps can you take to protect your irrigation system? 1. Shut Off the Water: Begin by turning off the water supply to your irrigation system. This prevents new water from entering during the draining process. 2. Open Drain Valves: Ensure all drain valves in your system are open, allowing any residual water to escape. Don't forget to open manual drain valves on sprinkler heads. 3. Compressed Air: If available, use compressed air to blow out any remaining water from your pipes. This helps clear any extra that may be caught in those hard-to-reach places. 4. Backflow Assembly Protection: Shield your backflow assemblies with insulated covers to ward off the cold. This protects your system's hardware from freezing and cracking. By investing a little bit of time in these simple steps, you can protect your irrigation system from costly repairs and flooding issues and avoid higher water bills during the winter months.
Protect Your Backflow Assembly This Winter Most of our city’s residents use culinary water for irrigation, and a properly installed irrigation system should include a backflow assembly. Backflow assemblies play a crucial role in preventing contamination of our city’s water supply. Backflow assemblies prevent harmful substances from re-entering your clean water. As winter approaches, now is the time to make sure your irrigation lines and backflow assemblies are drained and winterized to prevent costly damage. To protect your backflow assembly this winter, turn off and drain your irrigation system (check out our article with a guide on how to clear your irrigation system), inspect it for any existing damages, protect exposed components with insulated covers to help prevent freezing, and maintain your system year-round for optimal performance. Don't overlook the importance of backflow assemblies. Winterize them now to protect our city's water supply and your health.

Clearfield City Information Dispatch Consolidation to Happen in November The Clearfield City Police Department will be combining its dispatch center with the Layton City Police Department at the end of November. This change will increase the efficiency

It will also allow the city to have six dispatchers available each shift to answer calls instead of two. Our department will be able to better serve residents by benefiting from the state-of-the-art dispatch center Layton City has built. Police Chief Kelly Bennett said, “Residents won’t notice any difference—except that their calls get answered quicker and our officers respond faster. They will still be getting the same great service, but the calls will be answered in Layton instead of Clearfield.”
Park Bathrooms Close for the Season Our parks are beautiful during winter! But when you visit, you’ll need to prepare ahead of time because all park bathrooms close for the season on Monday, Nov. 13. The restrooms will reopen in the Spring of 2024.

Ian Barlow
Rielly is a sophomore at Clearfield High School. She is an excellent student who challenges herself academically with AP, CE, and Honors classes. Her favorite class is mentoring because “I have an amazing teacher and a lot of friends are in my class.” It hasn’t taken Rielly long to learn that Clearfield is filled with lots of amazing other students and the school spirit is unbeatable. Her favorite part of being a Falcon so far is going to the football games because “the school spirit is awesome and makes it a lot of fun. Even if we are losing, we’re still there to cheer and support our team!”
Ian is a junior at Clearfield High School. He loves being in Madrigals and truly enjoys his choir class. He is an outstanding student whose schedule is full of AP, CE, and IB classes. These academic programs are one of the reasons he loves Clearfield High as they, “allow you to earn a lot of college credit while you are still in high school. Clearfield also has really good teachers that make sure you learn, and you get to do this with other really good students.” Ian isn’t all work all the time as he enjoys school activities and especially loves Splat during Homecoming Week.

The Vasquez Family of Clearfield TURNING BACK THE CLOCK

M
ost ethnic minorities arrived in Northern Utah with a connection to the railroad and this was the case for Juan Vasquez and his family. Juan was a Union Pacific Railroad worker who made his way west working with them. He arrived in Utah in 1925 and remained in Clearfield for the remainder of his life, working for Union Pacific for 53 years. He was born in Santa Rosalia De Camargo Mexico in 1898, and married Trinidad Najera in Sacramento California in 1925. In 1930, Juan and Trinidad purchased 10 acres of land in Clearfield. They were the first Mexican Americans to purchase land in Davis County, and owned the property until 1991, when Clearfield City purchased the land from their descendants. Juan worked his Union Pacific job, and his land. He grew corn, tomatoes, sugar beets, strawberries, watermelons, squash, alfalfa, and tree seedlings. He and Trinidad raised dairy cows, had chickens, pigs, goats, and sheep. They were known for keeping their land and home meticulous. In 1926, they had a son named Jose, and soon followed a little girl, Celia, in 1928. During the Depression, Juan and Trini were known for their great generosity to others. Some families would have starved without their help. Trini was known for her delicious cooking, and they often spent weekends entertaining with large feasts, storytelling, singing and playing music.

They valued education, and both children received degrees from Weber College. Jose served in the Air Force during WWII. Juan and Trini believed so much in the value of education, they both took adult education classes in the evenings. Jose and Celia raised children in the Clearfield area, and the grandchildren were often visitors to the 10 acres. Juan passed in 1976, and Trini in 1989. Their commitment to education left a legacy that Jose and Celia passed to their children. Their grandchildren went on to obtain bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Upon Trini’s passing in 1987, they had ten grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Leaving a legacy and deep roots here in Clearfield.

A tasty twist on
Thanksgiving

Instead of the usual assortment of pies, this November we’re sharing two non-traditional Thanksgiving desserts that have brought joy and lasting memories to the Spelts family.
Caramel Apples by Melissa Spelts
I have fond memories of Thanksgivings with the Spelts side of the family and the smell of yummy food coming from the kitchen. We are very blessed with good cooks in our family. Our cute niece had the brilliant idea to make caramel apples and sell them. Seriously, such a smart idea. First of all, who can resist that cute face? Second of all, the cousin “peer pressure” is real. If one person buys one, everyone else will want one! They turned out great! This recipe is simple and super fun for the whole family to make. 10 Granny Smith Apples (the green ones) 3 Werther’s Original Soft Caramels (10.8 oz bags) 6 Tbsp. heavy whipping cream Sticks (wooden ones are best) Step 1: Wash apples really well, making sure the wax is off the apples. Dry well, remove the stems and add the sticks. Place them on parchment paper ready for the caramel. Step 2: In separate bowls or paper plates put your smashed Oreo cookies, Heath bars, mini M&Ms, Reese’s pieces, melted chocolate and white chocolate, etc. Step 3: In a microwave safe bowl, place your unwrapped caramels and heavy whipping cream. Microwave for 30 second intervals stirring in between. Step 4: Once caramel is ready, dip apples in and spoon caramel all over the apple until it is evenly covered. Hold it over your bowl of caramel until excess caramel comes off. Then roll in your candy bar bits, crushed Oreo, and/or M&M’s. Drizzle chocolate all over the apple. Step 5: Place in fridge and let caramel cool. Step 6: EAT! Yum!

Molasses Sugar Cookies by Chelsea Schulze
1 ½ cups shortening 2 eggs 2 cups sugar ½ cup molasses 4 tsp. soda 4 cup flour 1 tsp. cloves 1 tsp. ginger 2 tsp. cinnamon ½ tsp. salt Melt shortening over low heat. Let cool. Add sugar, molasses, and egg. Beat well. Sift dry ingredients together. Add to 1st mixture. Mix well. Chill. Form into 1-inch balls. Roll in sugar. Place 2 inches apart on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from oven, let cool and enjoy! clearfieldmagazine.com 29
