ilton Glaser, the godfather of modern graphic design who died on his 91st birthday June 26, was responsible for a number of iconic designs: The “I ♥ NY” logo, a classic Bob Dylan poster, the “chubby” psychedelic imagery that inspired the look of the animated Beatles movie “Yellow Submarine.” He was also co-founder, president and design director of New York magazine. The insider/outsider aesthetic was on display in a July 1968 issue of New York, when, moonlighting as the Underground Gourmet columnist, he co-wrote “A Gentile’s Guide to Jewish Food.” The first installment treats the appetizing store with almost anthropological respect. “The appetizing store is … a unique and wonderful institution,” it reads. “To be precise, the items in an appetizing store were and are not necessarily Jewish inventions. The Jews exercise an international gastronomic curatorship by bringing together and developing foods of Scandinavian, Middle European and Middle Eastern origins.” Oh, and the average price of lox was $3.15 a pound. The cover of the magazine featured — what else? — a Glaser design of a whole salmon trapped in a bagel.

Where’s God in the Coronavirus? Clergy of All Faiths Weigh In

A

rabbi, a pastor, and an imam walked into a pandemic — and realized it was not a joke. Russia’s Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and Bosnia’s Grand Mufti Mustafa Ceric are just three of the more than 40 clerics taking part in an online interfaith initiative dubbed “Coronaspection.” A project of the Jerusalem-based Elijah Interfaith Institute, the project “brings the wisdom of all religions to members of all religions,” said its director, Rabbi Alon Goshen-Gottstein. The clergy, representing Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and the Bahá’í faith, grapple with the thorny theological questions underlying the pandemic and dwell on the prospective shifts to worship and community in a world of

digital congregations. The video conversations include everything from practical advice on how to conquer fear and build spiritual resources, to making the home and family the center of worship, to the power of prayer and questions of whether God sent Cobid-19 as a punishment. Rabbi David Wolpe, of Temple Sinai in Los Angeles and regular contributor to The Jewish Week, argued the pandemic was a manifestation of what he and Goshen-Gottstein settled on calling “holy randomness.” If the world weren’t random, the rabbi suggested, people would do good only to earn a reward, not out of a sense of real goodness. “Coronaspection” videos are available at elijah-interfaith.org.

ver the last few months, we’ve seen and heard how families crave and value their relationships with Jewish educators and the meaningful Jewish experiences Next Steps: they help to A Post-Covid bring into Community their lives. For many, the shelter-in-place experience opened eyes about the role and work of educators. This is the time of year when many families, under normal cir-

are not the only ways Jewish education will be delivered post-pandemic. But we’ve learned so much about what makes education effective, relevant, meaningful, even efficient, over the last few months. First, I hope our community continues to embrace its educators. When society reopens, Jewish educators will be tasked with rebuilding much of Jewish communal life. The relationships and the connections they are maintaining with their students today will be the foundation of that growth tomorrow. Many Jewish educators will need to be re-employed, paid more and valued more. Our

Our community should empower a new generation of Jewish educators. At the same time, this period of isolation confirmed what almost every educator already knew: Our youth can access knowledge whenever they want. One need not be a rabbi or a scholar to find all the answers. Rather, real knowledge is contained within learners. Wisdom is not in any curriculum, or source sheet, and not even in a canon or Torah. New Group Linking Climate Change with Systemic Racism

Dayenu stresses environmental justice ahead of Election Day.

new national Jewish group dedicated to tackling the climate crisis is emphasizing the connections between racial injustice and a degraded environment. Minority communities, says Rabbi Jennie Rosenn, founder and CEO of the new group, Dayenu, “are more likely to have polluting industries close by, less access to cooling in extreme heat, and significantly limited access to quality medical care.” Launched one month before George Floyd’s killing in police custody led to weeks of demonstrations against police brutality and racial injustice, Dayenu aims to link the issues in its push for clean energy and a “Just Green New York Recovery” — a pledge by the presidential candidates to rebuild the world after the coronavirus so that it is more just and sustainable rather than supporting the coal and gas industries. “We want an economy that runs on 100 percent clean energy,” said Phil Aroneanu, Dayenu’s chief strategy officer. “Iceland has done it and some other countries are working towards that. The coal industry is dead and the question is whether we are transitioning from coal to gas or to renewables … such as wind, solar, paddle power and batteries.” Dayenu’s emphasis on “climate justice” is a re-

The climate crisis disproportionately impacts

“those who have been historically marginalized: people living in the global south, in poverty, in particularly vulnerable areas, and people who experience racism and other kinds of bigotry,” Rabbi Rosenn told The Jewish Week. information, but the real wisdom is held within the hearts and minds of every learner. Nevertheless, learners crave human beings who matter in their lives. It is within these rich relationships between educator and student that effective and positive transmission of Jewish tradition occurs. In its simplest form, all education is based on the transmission of knowledge and skills. Educators often play the important role of selecting which pieces of knowledge to focus on, and when. Being Jewish today takes on different meanings for different people, and almost certainly is different than it was even just one generation ago. Educators are tasked with tapping into the singularity of every individual — their interests, ambitions, fears, questions — and helping that individual find their connection to Jewish life. The new paradigm also reminds us about the vast amounts of knowledge accessible beyond the classroom. Learning can happen in the playground, in the streets and the mall, most definitely in homes, and of course online. Educators support that which is being lived by learners on a daily basis. Technology has been shown to be remarkably effective and efficient

in helping our community achieve educational goals. Most importantly, technology is a native, intuitive platform for our children. Ignoring technology or implying that it is only a distraction is to dismiss an essential tool through which our children develop relationships, engage in learning and find meaning in life. After Covid-19, online social and learning experiences will continue to be powerful tools. We have also seen technology’s limitations. We now have more clarity about the kinds of experiences and learning that are best achieved in person. Educators will never again take face-to-face time for granted. Instead, we will be able to design in-person learning experiences in intentional ways, enabling learners to gain deeper insights and thrive. This reality — an abundantly positive one — compels us as Jewish educators to think about “proactive possibilities.” Jewish education has the power to change minds, to change lives and to change the world. Our wisdom, values and tradition can help young people thrive and can bring deeper meaning into all parts of their lives. As more and more educators embrace this approach to Jewish education, more of our learners will understand — because they will experience — the value of Jewish learning in their lives today, in an increasingly complex world they must navigate. ■

District. Engel lead by 22 points among white voters and the two were tied among men. When Engel first won the seat in 1988, just 11 percent of the population was African American and 13 percent was Hispanic. Today, fewer than one-third of the district’s residents are white. This time, Fuchs noted, voters also viewed “older people in elected office as failures.” Engel is 73, Bowman is 44. And she said younger voters and black and Hispanic voters blame the political establishment for the election of Donald Trump as president. “They see the world they are inheriting as a disaster on every front, whether it is true or not,” she observed. “We have a public health crisis, an economic crisis and a crisis around race. That is the political storm taking place in New York where political engagement is very strong right now among particularly folks in the progressive left who want change.” Voters also appear to have also chosen two other African-American progressives in safe Democratic districts: New York City Councilman Ritchie Torres in the 15th District representing most of the South Bronx; and Mondaire Jones, 32, who won more than double the votes of any of the other six candidates running for the 17th District (Rockland and Westchester counties) seat now held by retiring Rep. replied: “I’m not concerned.” “I think he is in a position where he is formulating his position and is taking input from various sources and we hope he will continue to listen to his Jewish Democratic constituents who strongly value the U.S.-Israel relationship,” she said. Soifer added that Jones “is good on Israel. We held a forum with all of the candidates running for Lowey’s seat and all said they supported unconditional aid to Israel.” Michael Miller, executive vice president and

CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, said he knows Torres and described him as “very progressive and strongly supportive of Israel. I believe Mondaire will also be a friend of Israel in Congress.” He noted that the JCRC has taken Torres to Israel twice, the last time in May 2018. Although the JCRC routinely takes elected city officials to Israel to have them see for themselves the complexities of the region, it is unusual to take someone twice. “He wanted to see it again,” Miller said. ■

enry Olsen, a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, said the “likely victories of Bowman and Jones show that the progressive wing of the Democratic Party is especially strong at this moment. I think you can’t draw too firm a conclusion about any waning influence of a pro-Israel Jewish ethnic vote from these two races. Wait to see if this happens in other [districts] with a large Jewish population and at other times (e.g., in the fall or in 2022) when the Floyd murder is not the major domestic news item.” Fuchs also noted that the fact that Bowman “was a dynamic, exciting, qualified challenger and a black man in the current politics and in this district is significant. … And there was a mood in the Democratic base in New York to get rid of incumbents because people believed they have been there too long.” That was the view of Jews for Racial and Economic Justice, a group founded in 1990 that focuses on dismantling racism and economic exploitation but also opposes Israel’s occupation. Rachel McCullough, its director of organizing, said in an email that her group considered Engel “part of an old generation of Jewish leaders and politicians who are out of touch with the mainstream of our community. … Last week, Jewish voters in Riverdale … were inspired by Jamaal’s compassionate and bold message of bringing communities together to build a thriving and inclusive multiracial democracy because they know that our own safety and well-being as a Jewish community depends on achieving that vision too.” Although it supported Engel’s re-election, the Jewish Democratic Council of America said it is confident Bowman “is committed to the priorities of Jewish voters.” “We think he is going to closely align with the values of the Jewish community on all the issues that Jewish voters prioritize, starting with combatting gun violence, insuring access to affordable health care and advocating for racial justice,” said Halie Soifer, its executive director. “We look forward to working with him to ensure that he is also aligned with our community when it comes to Israel.” While some progressives are urging Bowman to follow the lead of House members like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-14th), who this week called on the United States to cut assistance to Israel should it proceed to annex parts of the West Bank, Soifer

For New York Politics, a Changing of the Guard

t was a very good Democratic primary day for New York progressives: Jamaal Bowman, the middle school principal who challenged longtime Rep. Eliot Engel in the 16th District, declared victory; in the 15th district, the likely winner is Ritchie Torres; Mondaire Jones is leading in the 17th to succeed Nita Lowey — like Engel, a Jewish pro-Israel stalwart. Although the candidates are not in lockstep on the issues, their apparent victories have dramatic implications for the New York area’s Jewish community. While Torres had the backing of mainstream pro-Israel PACs, and Jones vowed to continue Lowey’s pro-Israel legacy, Bowman has said that he supports conditioning U.S. aid to Israel. Many Democrats have been critical of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but the aid package is mostly considered

C

sacrosanct. This week, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whose 14th District straddles Queens and the Bronx, joined three other House Democrats in calling on the United States to cut assistance to Israel should it annex parts of the West Bank. New York is undergoing what one reporter called “a generational political shift,” drawing on progressive energy and shifting attitudes toward race, sexuality and gender. (All three congressional candidates are black; Torres and Jones are gay.) These insurgents aren’t necessarily ready to abandon Israel. But it will take a renewed effort to press her cause, from grassroots organizing to political fundraising. Coalition-building is more important than ever. As Eliot Engel found out, the messages that worked in the past cannot be taken for granted.

A BLM Platform Is Hardly Kosher

Re: Michael Koplow’s “Why Zionists Should Stand with Black Lives Matter” (Opinion, June 19): Mr. Koplow is misguided in his assumption that “Jewish law considers a dish with a 60-to-one ratio of kosher to non-kosher food to be unequivocally kosher.” The concept of “bitul beshishim” applies only if the one percent of non-kosher food was mistakenly added to the kosher food. The key word here is “mistakenly.” It does not apply if the one percent of non-kosher food was purposely added. When this is done on purpose, the entire dish is considered non-kosher. The Movement for Black Lives had purposely included the one percent of vitriol to its platform, and this cannot be ignored. It singles out Israel and uses words like genocide that serve no purpose in moving forward its agenda. Therefore, the entire amount is deemed non-kosher. Judith Eisenberg Pollak Manhattan

Shuls Should Beware the ‘Silent Spreaders’

Stuart Ain’s description of The Hampton Synagogue’s “strictest protocol” might be interpreted as false security in light of a recent study of the natural history of the Covid-19 virus disease (“As Some Synagogues Reopen, a Mix of Emotions,” June 19). The New England Journal of Medicine (June 12, 2020) described a cohort of 128 passengers from the cruise ship Diamond Princess, quarantined in a Japanese hospital. Ninety-six had tested positive and 32 negative. This entire group was asymptomatic — that is, had no symptoms of the illness. The purpose of this observation was to observe their clinical course, while they were isolated. Of the 96 positive cases, only 11 became symptomatic between three and seven days later, whereas 85 never did. Those 85, who had no symptoms at all, were carriers and potential “silent” spreaders of the disease for the next several weeks. Translated into meaningful language for the “strictest protocol,” safe admission to shul would require being tested negative no more than six days before attendance. Those tested earlier could have been infected more recently and be asymptomatic (silent) spreaders davening right next to any of us. Was this critical parameter of time included in the “strictest protocol”? If not, it would seem that social distancing, hand washing, masks and gloves is still the only program to fol-

low, if we are not satisfied with davening at home until the “all clear” signal is sounded by the public health leadership of the land. Dr. Robert S. April Manhattan The writer is an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Neurology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

Does Grant Deserve His Place of Honor?

In the frenzy of removing statues and symbols of hate, bigotry and prejudice, let me suggest the litmus test of sincerity (“What We Should Do About Those Statues,” Editorial, June 26). After the capture of Vicksburg, Miss., by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, the hero of the Civil War in America, issued General Order 11 giving the Jews of towns in Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee 24 hours to pack up and leave their homes and towns. Grant was a man of his times and anti-Semitism was virulent during the Civil War and, especially afterwards, when Jews were seen as carpetbagging peddlers from the North profiting from the defeat of the South. Abraham Lincoln rescinded the order after Jews of the North worked with their congressmen to inform him. Grant later tried to show support for Jews, but it didn’t remove the stain. So, do we take Grant’s picture off of our currency? Do we exhume his body from Grant’s Tomb in Manhattan and ship it to some unmarked grave? Would leaders of today’s movements support this? Yes, symbols of hate need to be removed. It should be done with dialogue among all groups to determine how and when, and to ensure that these symbols no longer provide permission for the hatred and persecution of any fellow human being. David Wayne North Bellmore, N.Y.

Fighting Covid or condemning hate, Trump’s instinct is to play to his base.

I

’ve said this before: I don’t know if Donald Trump is a white supremacist or an anti-Semite. I do know that he is good for white supremacy and anti-Semitism.

Andrew Silow-Carroll

And I’ll add to that: I doubt the president is proCovid, but he couldn’t have done a better job of helping spread the virus had he been on its payroll. Whether eschewing a mask, taunting governors for following his own government’s advice or proposing unproven cures, Trump has been a super spreader by proxy. Hate, anti-Semitism, Covid-19: There’s a link between these medical and metaphorical contagions. It is found in his press secretary’s response after Trump retweeted a video showing a group of supporters in Florida, including a man who twice chants “white power.” Kayleigh McEnany explained Trump’s retweet, which he took down but for which he did not apologize: “His point in tweeting out that video was to stand with his supporters, who are oftentimes demonized.” That’s the skeleton key to Trump’s presidency: stoking his base, comforting the aggrieved, owning the left. This tendency is also the key to his Charlottesville remarks. His “very fine people, on both sides” statement after the 2017 Unite the Right rally has been debated, and occa-

sionally distorted, to death. Let’s talk about it again, because it’s important. The ostensible focal point of the Unite the Right rally were attempts by the city to remove a Confederate statue. As Trump would later say, people “were also there because they wanted to protest the taking down of a statue of Robert E. Lee.” However, the rally was organized by various farright and white supremacist groups for other extremists — not by or for Southern “heritage” groups. Even the United Daughters of the Confederacy denounced what it called the “hate groups” that organized the rally. On Aug. 11, the night before the main rally, hundreds of white nationalists, some wielding tiki torches, gathered at the University of Virginia. This was the mob that chanted “white lives matter” and “Jews will not replace us.” Trump’s first tweet came the next day, after clashes between far-right protesters and anti-hate counter-protesters: “We ALL must be united & condemn all that hate stands for. There is no place for this kind of violence in America. Lets come together as one!” Later that day, when a car driven by a white supremacist killed a counter-protester, Trump said, “We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides, on many sides.” “Many sides.” Up to this point, Trump did not specifically condemn the racists who organized the rally, angering many observers. Trump focused on the clashes between the protesters and the counter-protesters — not the torch-light march, not the car-ramming, not the racist rally. The next day, after even

The link between medical and metaphorical contagions. fellow Republicans like Florida Sen. Marco Rubio called on Trump to condemn the “terror attack by #whitesupremacists,” the White House tried again, saying “The president said very strongly in his statement yesterday that he condemns all forms of violence, bigotry and hatred, and of course that includes white supremacists, KKK, neo-Nazi and all extremist groups. He called for national unity and bringing all Americans together.” “All forms” and “that includes” suggest that the anti-racist protestors as well as the KKK and neo-Nazis were driven by bigotry and hate — a clear equivalence. If I condemn “all forms of cholesterol, and that includes the bad cholesterol,” that means I also condemn the good cholesterol. Criticism of the president subsided somewhat — for two days. At an Aug. 15 press conference to discuss infrastructure, a reporter asked about his initial comments on Charlottesville. Trump said, “Yes, I think there’s blame on both sides. If you look at both sides — I think there’s blame on both sides. And I have no doubt about it, and you don’t have any doubt about it either.” Again, Trump is focusing on the clashes in Charlottes-

ville, not the racist rally nor the racist groups that organized it. In Trump’s framing, the tragedy of Charlottesville was not that white supremacists gathered in force in an American college town in 2017, but that two groups of agitators fought violently in the streets. His insistence that this was a Confederate heritage event led to his most arguedabout comment: “[Y]ou had some very bad people in that group, but you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides….You had people in that group that were there to protest the taking down of, to them, a very, very important statue and the renaming of a park from Robert E. Lee to another name.” Certainly, Trump’s people had time to digest the ac-

counts by law enforcement and local officials. They had to know that the rally was a gathering of zealous white supremacists. But then as now, whenever Trump gets close to an idea that could be embraced by a Democrat or that might alienate even a small portion of his base — whether condemning a racist video or wearing a mask — he plays almost exclusively to the Maga crowd. Typical presidents would have understood that to lead a coherent, bipartisan assault on Nazis or a deadly virus would carry no political risk, and might even ensure their re-election. Not Trump. I’d say he was unmasked by Covid-19, but his response to Charlottesville back in 2017 told us exactly who he is. n

hroughout the desert, the Israelites rebel, quarrel and fight. They demand meat, have fond (and false) memories of Egypt, seek to usurp the leadership of Moses and demonstrate repeated ingratitude to God. To a reader who comes to the story for the first time, it can often seem that Bertolt Brecht’s quip about unsatisfacMusings tory government — that one should dissolve the people and elect another — is the only solution. Indeed, God proposes it more than once. In experiencing the long days of the pandemic, however, we can perhaps develop more sympathy with the situation of our forebearers. For a difficult, prolonged situation sorely tests the nerves of even the most patient. Slight disagreements erupt into full-throated arguments. Different strategies become polarizing fights. People get on one another’s last nerve. That is why the vision of a promised land is so important in the story of the wilderness. We have to envision a better world at the end of the trials. Like the Israelites, we need not come through the desert empty-handed. We can come through it understanding more about ourselves, one another, and believing that at the end of the journey there will be peace. Supporting Artists in This Moment is Not a Luxury

I

don’t typically cry at work. But last week, the tears flowed. I’ve read thousands of grant proposals in my career. None have been as devastating as the applications my organization, Asylum Arts, received from 141 artists as part of our emergency Covid relief funds. We have $50,000 to disburse to artists impacted by the pandemic, thanks to the generous support of the CANVAS initiative, a partnership of five Jewish foundations working with Jewish Funders Network. But we know that every single artist across the globe has been hurt by the pandemic. The cultural sector is one of the industries that has completely shut down, exacerbating most artists’ already precarious place Rebecca Guber is the director and founder of Asylum Arts, and previously was the founding director of the Six Points Fellowship for Emerging Jewish Artists.

in our economy. Supporting artists and culture in this moment is not a luxury. During this period of social distancing, all of us have been comforted, inspired or moved by a work of art. We’ve read poetry, attended online performances, listened to podcasts or toured museums digitally. These experiences allow us to understand and process our world, creating understanding and empathy, and shifting our perspectives. They expand our minds and hearts. All of those experiences are possible only because an artist spent hours working to share their creative voice with the world. And much like other vulnerable members of our society, many of these artists are struggling with basic needs right now. Artists typically survive on a patchwork of paid jobs, creative gigs and travel to wherever a grant or commission can take them. Now they have lost most of that work,

shocking reality for us. Like so many fellow Boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964) who think of themselves as engaged, active older men and women, we recognized that we are now perceived, in the time of the pandemic, as The Elderly. That’s a particularly tough pill for Boomers to swallow. We were the generation of the ’60s and ’70s that thought we could change the world through our music, energy and political activism, much of it focused on opposing the Vietnam War. Now that we’re in our 60s and 70s, we’re being forced to recognize and accept our limitations and more directly, our mortality. We are now the generation most susceptible to the ravages of the coronavirus, fearful that this time of quarantine could become an extended period of isolation from family, friends and much of society, perhaps for the rest of our lives. When will we be able to hold and hug our grandchildren? Will we ever get on an airplane to visit distant loved ones? Is 70 the new 90? Laura Geller, rabbi emerita of Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills, Calif., and an expert on issues concerning aging, says, “70 is neither the new 50 nor the new 90. Seventy is simply a new 70.” A generation uncomfortable with words like “retired” or “senior” or “elder” has the opportunity “to make the rules for how we want to live these years.” Rabbi Geller was named an Influencer in Aging

Rebecca Gruber Culture is crucial during times of crisis. and are not being compensated for much of the investments they’ve already made. Very few venues are honoring contracts, even when artists have already spent a significant amount of time and money (shipping art across the world, buying materials or hiring colleagues). Many have lost income from work they did before the pandemic. One New York artist shared that she had paid for shipment

and materials for two shows slated to open in Poland in the spring, both of which were cancelled. Although galleries have reopened in Tel Aviv and Berlin, live venues have not, and due to the larger economic situation, it’s unlikely even those now-open shows will result in significant sales. By necessity, artists often live a nomadic life. The pandemic has exacerbated the risks of this lifestyle. We’re hearing of artists stranded in unfamiliar communities without a network of support and navigating a foreign government’s bureaucracy and health system, all of which is terrifying during a crisis. Many artists have insecure visa situations, and aren’t eligible for emergency support. One artist who relocated to Australia shared that, “Despite being registered as a resident in AUS and paying taxes to the Australian Tax Authorities in the last 2.5 years, I am not eligible for any financial aid from the Australian government since all the

financial aid offered (both those specific to artists and those to the general population) are reserved to Australian citizens and those with permanent resident status only.” Artists’ creative and collaborative processes have also suffered. Nearly all artists work in a community, whether they are visual artists in a print or pottery studio or a choreographer making large-scale work with 30 dancers. The pandemic isn’t just making the work impossible, but robbing artists of inspiration, connection and cross-pollination. Artists can still create at home in isolation — and many do — but this is just a fraction of their actual practice. And most artists, and certainly the Jewish ones, are drawn to cities, with limited space, higher costs and greater exposure to the virus. At Asylum Arts, we put out a call to our network of nearly 700 artists, offering $1,000 grants that we named Sustaining Practice Grants,

In the meantime, Rabbi Geller reminds us that “the gift of the pandemic” is the opportunity to focus our thoughts on how we choose to stay engaged in the world. “We can’t pretend anymore” about the impermanence of life. We must learn to navigate our lives with courage, thoughtfulness and faith, mindful of the words of Psalm 90, which we read each Shabbat morning: “Teach us how to number our days, that we may attain a heart of wisdom.” Amen. ■

specifically intended to allow them to continue doing their creative work. We asked artists only to apply if they had lost more than half of their household income. Our application allowed artists to share the pandemic’s impact on their practice and life. We received 141 applications, far more than we can support. And each application is a microcosm of both suffering and resilience. We have given 50 of these 141 artists grants that will perhaps pay part of their rent, or allow a breath during a moment of acute financial stress. One artist who received funding wrote, “Sweet and calm tears of joy and gratitude soothingly glide down my face. I feel like somebody cares if I’m safe with

stable housing and feels like my art has a positive contribution to make in this world. That is a gift from beyond the beyond.” And if you are doing the math, that support only reached 35 percent of those who applied and qualified. In this moment, we all need to support our artists, whether it is purchasing an album you’ve been streaming, buying a new work for your home or, if you’re in the position to do so, donating generously to an organization or fund that is supporting artists directly. We must ensure that our Jewish artists can continue to work, creating culture that will allow us to reflect on this moment, and have hope for the future. ■

THE ARTS Finding His Voice, and His Identity, in the Theater

David Adjmi grew up gay and artistic in Brooklyn’s tight-knit Syrian community. The stage changed his life. Sandee Brawarsky Culture Editor

W

hen David Adjmi was a small child, his mother would drive him from their Brooklyn home to Manhattan to see Broadway shows, sit in the lobbies of grand hotels or walk through museums. She had dropped out of school at 16 to marry his father, as was traditional in their Syrian Jewish community, and even i f s h e wasn’t quite sure what “culture” was, she knew that she wanted to imbue her youngBOOKMARKS est son with it. He wasn’t sure what culture was either, but he preferred it to going fishing with his father and brothers in Sheepshead Bay. Raw, blunt, gripping and funny, Adjmi’s “Lot Six” (Harper) is a memoir of self-invention, the story of a man who grew up always feeling the outsider — an artist, a non-believer in their tightknit Jewish community, a gay man. His childhood was lonely, often full of selfloathing, and he felt trapped in Orthodox yeshivas where he didn’t fit in. But he managed to hold onto his instinctive feeling that he could be a citizen of the world. The pain ultimately fuels his big talents as a writer. “I wrote the book for people who were like me, who felt lost in the world, or hopeless, or didn’t know if their voice mattered,” he says in an interview from his home in Los Angeles. “I wanted to write the book to say to them: Your voice matters.” Adjmi, 47, has won many awards and fellowships for his plays, including “Marie Antoinette,” “Elective Affinities,” “3C” and “Stunning.” The latter is set in the Syrian Jewish community and had an extended run at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater. “Lot Six” is his first book. He explains the thread that connects all of his work, “I often think that my

writing is about people trying to understand how to live, searching for a moral or spiritual compass for how to be in the world. That runs through everything.” Mixing humor and tragedy is the way he sees life and truth, he says. “Different optics, but they’re showing you the same thing.” The memoir’s title is Syrian slang for homosexual. When he first heard the term as a child, he didn’t know what it meant, but did know that it was something freakish, a person who had no place in the world. He promised himself then that he wouldn’t be a Lot Six. The expression comes from Syrian business practices: Lot numbers were affixed to all of the items, doubling the wholesale price. So, Lot Six was code for three, an odd number, as he writes, “odd, as in queer. It wasn’t just an epithet for a gay person — it was a price tag, a declaration of value. And a Lot Six had no value. The identity, if I ever claimed it, would render me worthless.” Adjmi grew up with a family name that is well-known in the community — but his own family — both sides had immigrated from Aleppo genera-

tions earlier — was on the fringes. It had lost its wealth, lived in an undesirable part of the neighborhood and didn’t have the sports cars and vacation homes that his classmates’ families did. His mother, who was his “ambassador” to things cultural, still wanted him to fit into the community and marry a nice young Syrian woman. His father wanted him to work in an electronics store. His sister and two brothers were considerably older and mostly out of the house when he was growing up, and when their parents split up. “In some way, exile was my native state,” he writes, explaining that the word “adjmi” derives from the Arabic “ajam,” which loosely translates to outsider, or more specifically, exile from Persia.” In well-crafted prose, he describes his friendship with Howie — most names are changed — for whom the distinctions between falsehoods and truths are a blur, and Adjmi is his underling in acts of mischief. With Howie and then others, it’s as though Adjmi’s self-identity is a blank canvas, painted by those around him. For his bar mitzvah at the Ahi Ezer synagogue on Avenue S, he wears a suit bought in a discount outlet on Long Island by his father. At the party in the basement with a DJ, he has a rare moment of losing the feeling of being watched, as he danced with his sister-in-law, getting lost in the music and feeling “light as air” and later “one

with the gold chains, the slithering bodies and the swarms of Armani.” Then follow arguments with teachers where he finds contradictions in Jewish philosophy classes, suspensions and demotion to “the Dumb Class.” There, he feels free to question, less pressure to do well and more acceptance by his peers. When he is asked to leave the school, his mother fights back against school officials, but he won’t return, and finds that his “exile was transmuted into freedom.” His father won’t let him attend public school, so he finds a private school in Manhattan and feels ownership over his life — and works at losing his Brooklyn accent. At film school at USC and then Sarah Lawrence College, he still casts about for an identity, finding thrills in intellectual and artistic pursuits, but he is also filled with deep sadness. During his senior year, he goes to see the play “Six Degrees of Separation,” and soon after is determined to become a playwright. “I left the theater with my eyes blurred with tears — I couldn’t see straight. That play changed my life. It kind of broke me into pieces in a certain way. I had to put myself back together again. Great theater does that — it shatters you.” Studying playwriting at the Iowa Playwrights Workshop and then at Juilliard — neither are smooth paths — he begins to find his voice and the stories he needs to tell. “The thing that made me separate in the world was the thing that gave me my life. It made me who I am. I’m so grateful,” he says. Adjmi explains that all of his plays have elements of autobiography, even if he’s not aware while writing them. “If you have no skin in the game, if you’re not exposing yourself in some profound way as an artist, I don’t know if there is a point to it.” About the differences between writing plays and writing prose, he says that over the course of writing his memoir the two forms “started to narrow and converge. In the beginning I was just trying to draw up memories from my lived experience and trying to figure out if there was a narrative in that, a story that is true.” “Memoirs have to be fictionalized to some degree so the reader can ascertain the meaning and feeling, the truth of what happened. I’m not saying you make stuff up, but events have to

Turning Curses into Blessings

ho is the storyteller? Is he reliable? All writers are faced with these questions. This week’s Torah portion begins with the Moabite king Balak sending messengers to the sorcerer Balaam with a proposal. The king resorts to flattery: “Whoever you bless is blessed; whoever you curse is cursed.” Balak believes in the power of the word, and in the holy hitman’s capacity to manipulate it. A curse delivered by him could annihilate the Jewish people, the latest regional threat to Balak’s kingdom. The narrative focuses Parshat not on the king but on his Chukat-Balak spiritual adviser, and is seemingly told from his perspective. The fast-paced plot holds us in suspense as Balaam does not immediately accede to his patron’s request. Piously, he bids the messengers stay overnight while he sounds out the divine will. The God that Balaam believes in bears remarkable resemblance to the Almighty. Like the king, and like many rabbinical commentators, readers may first be impressed by Balaam’s claim of access to the Deity. However, what Balaam receives is a flat rejection. He is not to curse Israel, either from his home turf or from Moab. No change of location or perspective will help. Tersely, God explains that Israel is intrinsically blessed. Living up to his role as God’s honest broker, Balaam can only tell the messengers to go home. However, the honest-seeming Balaam relays God’s reply not as a blunt refusal but as a pretext for denying the king his request. In reality, his desires and those of the king converge. As in flirtation, Balaam postpones consent, using God as a cover to raise the stakes and inflate his sense of selfimportance. A more prestigious deputation arrives, offering higher honors; again they are turned down. How can God’s prophet go against the divine word? Nevertheless, the messengers are bid to stay overnight. What does Balaam hope to gain? Does he think he can change God’s mind? In fact, he does gain some traction. This time, God lets Balaam accompany the messengers to the king, on condition he not utter anything

He wrote “Stunning,” he says, thinking it would never be produced, as he was portraying a community that no one had heard of, while clashing genres and tones. It’s the story of a 16-year-old in Brooklyn pressured by her family to marry an older man, who turns out to be a con artist. The play became a scandal in the Syrian community, although many came to see it. He says that writing it was cathartic, and he got to see it performed in the same theater where he saw John Guare’s “Six Degrees of Separation” — and where he would later be presented with the Steinberg Playwright Award, with Guare in the audience, applauding him and later embracing him. Adjmi went back to Brooklyn for the first time in a long while last Thanksgiving. “I had a nostalgia for the old neighborhood. I had felt oppressed by it, but I missed it. The book awakened a desire to go

back to the past.” He misses the food, the particular sensibility of the community, some of which is in “Stunning,” and the looseness of Syrian slang. He also misses “the gaudiness and the materialism — I find it repelling and delicious at the same time.” And he admits that he wishes now that he might have been part of that tight-knit world. He adds, “I don’t have to define myself against it anymore.” He’s now working on a play with music by Will Butler/Arcade Fire, “Stereophonic,” that is scheduled to open on Broadway next spring, and “The Stumble,” commissioned by Lincoln Center Theater, about the composer Oscar Levant and his obsessive relationship with George Gershwin. “My most Jewish play yet,” Adjmi says. ■

it says “we have had enough with this destruction and being on the path that is neither just nor sustainable,” and it is also saying “we have enough” in terms of the “science, technology and capacity to ensure a just and sustainable world so all can have enough.” Dayenu is joining several grassroots Jewish environmental groups currently at work on the issue, among them Hazon, Jewish Earth Alliance and Jewish Climate Action Network (JCAN). Adrienne Leveen, a co-founder of JCAN-NYC, said Dayenu will “help connect grassroots Jewish climate groups with a larger national movement focused on climate justice.” Dayenu is getting out its message through what it calls Dayenu Circles, small groups of five to 10 people who meet monthly to engage in Dayenu-led climate campaigns. The first one has been established by 15 members of Congregation Beth Elohim, a Reform synagogue in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn. Lisa Cowan, the group’s leader, said they are participating in Dayenu’s Just Green Recovery campaign and are “thrilled to have this new pathway to advocate for climate solutions.” Rabbi Jonah Pesner, director of the Reform

“The Claims Conference has one purpose and one purpose only,” said Menachem Rosensaft, a board member and general counsel of the World Jewish Congress, “and that is to help and support Holocaust survivors and to negotiate with Germany and to a lesser extent with Austria … in order to obtain the necessary additional funds in order to provide for the needs of survivors. In that respect there is no one with the experience and the knowledge that Gideon has in this regard. He doesn’t need a learning curve. He doesn’t need to try and figure out what the various funds are, what the issues involved are.” Taylor’s time as executive vice president, however, also coincided with a low point for the organization, when employees stole an estimated $57 million in funds designated for Holocaust survivors in a scheme involving false claims for restitution. The Claims Conference itself alerted the FBI to the scam after Taylor left the job in 2009, and neither the FBI nor an internal probe found Taylor responsible. In an interview with The Jewish Week last Friday, Taylor spoke about the scandal and also about his priorities for an organization that dispenses nearly $1 billion a year in direct support for 60,000 survivors and to social welfare programs that serve them. “I deeply regret the fraud took place, and I deeply regret that we didn’t catch it,” said Taylor, 55. “It was discovered after I left and once it was discovered, I worked with the investigating authorities closely. And since then, the Claims Conference has taken many steps in conjunction with the German government to prevent fraudulent activity.” That the conference continues to secure “major

He has outlined a plan, what he calls a Clean Energy Revolution,” to address what he said is “a grave threat” so that the U.S. can “lead the world in addressing the climate emergency.” President Donald Trump has widely rolled back measures meant to address climate change. When U.S. government scientists released their latest volume of the National Climate Assessment, Trump rejected its central finding that emissions of carbon dioxide are caused by human activities and causing lasting economic damage. He has also begun the increased funding” from the German government every year is a sign of the trust placed in the organization, he said. “We all learn from the mistakes that happened 11 years ago,” Taylor continued. “There’s been a set of very significant changes to the systems and procedures following what happened.” Rosensaft says the fraud scandal is well in the past and that board members agreed that Taylor’s experience and expertise outweighed any criticism that might be directed at his appointment.

“Survivors tell us, ‘Don’t forget the message of what happened.’ That’s a sacred mission.”

“Balancing between potential optics and ensuring that the needs of the survivors are served, I will take the latter anytime,” said Rosensaft. “I also have the added benefit of having known Gideon throughout his entire tenure at the Claims Conference. I have always found him to be a person of the highest integrity, total dedication and one of the brightest people I know.” In addition to annual negotiations with the German government assuring funding for survivors and

yearlong process of withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris climate treaty that has been signed by nearly all nations to reduce fossil fuel emissions. He called it flawed, said it protects polluters and is too costly. In addition, he has moved to weaken fuel economy standards for cars. Dayenu hopes that climate will be a factor in the coming election. A majority of Americans (63 percent) report seeing the effects of climate change in their own communities, according to the Pew Research Center, and 60 percent said they believe it is a threat to the well-being of the United States — as high a figure as in any Pew survey going back to 2009. Fully 65 percent believe the federal government should do more — including more than half of Republicans and an overwhelming number of Democrats. “Solar energy is the cheapest form of energy and the reason we still burn oil and gas is because we have the infrastructure and the companies running them don’t want to close them down because of shareholder value,” said Aroneanu. “The technology [for clean energy] is there, what is lacking is the political will and investment in clean energy infrastructure. There are tax credits that are about to expire for solar and wind that Congress is considering continuing. We have to invest money up front to get a good return later.” ■ the 300-member network of social service agencies that serve them, Taylor said he hopes to focus on property restitution in partnership with the WJRO. Another priority is Holocaust education and commemoration, currently a small part of the overall budget but a growing concern as the survivor generation dwindles. “Their welfare is the first priority of the Claims Conference, but what we often hear from Holocaust survivors is, ‘Don’t forget the message of what happened. It’s your job to make sure that that message is transmitted, that’s your responsibility too.’ For us that’s also a sacred mission,” he said. Taylor will also address the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, setting up a task force to focus on places, like Florida, where there are significant populations of Holocaust survivors and rising case counts. The goal is “making sure that agencies have the flexibility to move the funds around in order to deal with what the needs are, and that they have the cash to deal with them.” The conference made $4.3 million available to enable agencies to respond to specific needs of the pandemic. Next up: Fighting the effects of social isolation on the elderly, which he sees as an opportunity to “link a younger generation with the generation of Holocaust survivors.” Taylor said he intends to build on Berman’s legacy, which he described in part as unifying disparate groups and interests around the needs of survivors. The conference “brings together the range of Jewish life — Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, secular Jews are all sitting at the table. Americans, Israelis, Europeans are all at the table. What Julie was able to do, and what is essential for the Claims Conference, is to bring together all those different views to make sure that the Claims Conference moves in a unified way, because the challenges are great.” ■

mid pandemic and economic turmoil, there is of course speculation about what life will be like “after” and how the new “normal” will likely be different. I suppose it’s true. Change is inevitable, even in good times. But one world I believe will remain much the same First Person — live theater. Yes, I’m just a Broadway baby and I’m confident the show will go (back) on, brilliant and vibrant as ever. For me, there’s nothing as thrilling as that shared moment when the lights dim, then brighten and an actor (or actors) appear on stage and begin to speak; when set, lights, sound and costumes come together to create a perfect illusion; when fantasy becomes reality. It’s that moment when the action — even if the action is merely a raised eyebrow — takes your breath away. And it is that moment shared in the moment of the performance with fellow audience members, then re-lived walking out of a theater — in hushed or loud exhilaration — and in conversations and memories lasting long after the performance that can never be replicated by streamed content. And that is why live theater will never change in the post-pandemic “after.” Karen Galatz, who lives in Berkeley, Calif., is a regular blogger for The Jewish Week.

backgrounds, but I did worry that he wasn’t a living-breathing theater fanatic. In fact, on our honeymoon, it did cause a problem. I secured primo seats for the U.S. debut run of “Les Misérables.” All through the first act, my adorable new spouse squirmed and twisted in his seventh-row-center seat. Was my beloved ill? At intermission, I asked what the problem was. His tortured explanation was that he was surprised everybody in the show was — and I quote — “so miserable.” I reminded him of the name of the play and asked if that wasn’t a clue. I asked if he had read Victor Hugo’s novel and asked if that wasn’t a clue. His reply — and I quote: “Well, yes, but I thought this would be different. It’s a musical. I thought it would be happy.” All through Act II, I contemplated getting the marriage annulled, and how I could have given the ticket to my mother or brother, who would have appreciated sitting seventh-row-center at the U.S. debut of an acclaimed production. Happily, despite the honeymoon contretemps, our marriage has survived. Just as the theater has — and will — survive. Still, it breaks my heart that the theaters on and off Broadway are dark — until at least Labor Day or perhaps January. I can’t wait for the marquees to light up. The stage doors to fly open. The orchestra pits to start humming, and the lobby doors to swing open. The show will go (back) on, and this Broadway baby cannot wait! ■

was placed was an Orthodox Jewish home. [The mission of Ohel] includes placing biologically Jewish foster children in Orthodox Jewish foster homes.” Doe was adopted as a teen by an Orthodox family in Brooklyn where Ohel had placed her, but the trauma she had earlier gone through continued, the suit claims. “Ohel and its case workers even hid her abuse from Plaintiff’s eventual adoptive parents, preventing them from providing her with the validation, support, and care she desperately needed.” Doe, whose name at birth in the Ukraine was Yana, but who has legally changed her name, is now divorced and lives in the Bronx with her son. Her mother died of suicide when Doe was about 12. “By placing undue emphasis on connecting biologically Jewish foster children with Orthodox Jewish foster homes, at the expense of adequately vetting and monitoring the foster homes in conformance with clear legal requirements, Ohel placed Plaintiff in a gravely dangerous home, ignored obvious warning signs, and failed to take even the most basic steps to ensure Plaintiff’s safety,” the suit alleges. “Ohel’s actions and inaction caused Plaintiff to be repeatedly sexually abused” by Jacobs when Doe was approximately 6, 7, or 8 years old, according to the suit. “During the ensuing years, Plaintiff has struggled to address the severe trauma that she continues to experience as a result of being sexually abused … The abuse has caused and continues to cause her extreme terror and has affected all of her

“Prospective foster parents undergo an extensive process including home evaluation, references, background checks, and training as per state regulations,” said Ohel CEO David Mandel. relationships throughout her life.” “Ohel’s case workers didn’t just fail to protect me. They falsely branded me a liar,” Doe said in a statement issued by her attorney, Eric Hecker. “They told me never to talk about being abused because no family will let a liar into their home.” “They did not do their job,” Hecker said of Ohel. “They did not adequately supervise the [foster] home. “The [long-term] emotional damage is profound,” Hecker, who works at Cuti Hecker Wang LLP, told The Jewish Week. “It destroyed her entire identity. We look forward to using the legal process to establish that Ohel utterly failed to protect this defenseless little girl while she was entrusted to its care.” The civil suit does not specify an amount of compensatory damages from the defendants, but “we certainly will be seeking seven figures,” he said.

The suit is one of the first brought against Ohel under the New York Child Victims Act (CVA), a state law that came into effect on Aug. 14, 2019, extending the statute of limitations for child sexual abuse cases. The limitations period permits civil cases to be brought until victims are 55 years old. Critically, the law includes a one-year window for survivors to file a civil lawsuit. After the CVA was signed into law, charedi Orthodox organizations — as well as the Boy Scouts, the Catholic Church and other groups — expressed fears that the look-back provision and extended statute of limitations could wreak havoc on schools, camps and other institutions under their auspices. Agudath Israel, the charedi umbrella group that lobbied against the passage of the legislation, warned that the one-year look-back window “could literally destroy schools, houses of worship that sponsor youth programs, summer camps and other institutions that are the very lifeblood of our community.” Mandel, the Ohel CEO, declined to comment on what financial effect the suit may have on his agency. “Like in any organization or private individual, there is always a concern about any lawsuit and its outcome. We review the information, review the facts, and present our findings.” While the 51-year-old Ohel has earned high praise in the Jewish community for services it provides for foster children, the way it has dealt with sexual abusers has drawn criticism in some circles. Child advocates and observers of sexual abuse cases have accused the agency of functioning in a way that does more to protect the reputation of the Orthodox community than the safety of its children. The Jewish Week has reported several times in the last decade about allegations that Ohel handled sex abuse accusations in ways that were legal, but, some experts say, put children at risk. “Concerning [the] question of Ohel being ‘lax’ on previous allegations, all such issues were fully investigated by Ohel and oversight agencies including allegations made by The Jewish Week and Ohel was found to be in full compliance by NYS,” Mandel said. “These documents stipulating Ohel compliance are found on Ohel’s website. Ohel as all other agencies in the child welfare system continues to be audited by government as part of ongoing compliance.” ■ steve@jewishweek.org
