From the Editor: THE AFRICAN gaming industry is slowly seeing a return to business-as-usual - this is beyond the phenomenal activity and growth online gaming has seen over the past year, when land-based casino and gaming operations were largely shut down for the better part of a year. While the pandemic lockdown claimed South Africa’s largest horseracing operator - Phumelela Gaming & Leisure - a new operator has emerged from the ashes of the Phumelela Business Rescue that will o¡ er stakeholders, and industry workers an opportunity to share in operations. More on this exciting development in the pages of this issue of Gaming for Africa magazine. Sun International, like all gaming operators whose core-business is based upon land-based gaming and integrated resorts, su¡ ered a R1bn loss last year, but is optimistic that the good times will return. And along with that optimism, many operators are looking at online gaming and ensuring that they are well-positioned with online o¡ erings for the future. Which begs the question, will South Africa allow online gaming soon? And, while the online gaming operators continue to grow their businesses across the continent, the interest in Africa is growing - a must read on entering the African market is Pronet Gaming’s article in this issue, which dispels a host of commonly-held myths about the online gaming market and the European perception of the African gaming market. Seychelles Casinos Open After months of restrictions, closed shops, missed family time and diminished nightlife, the sun-kissed Inidan Ocean island of Seychelles has finally ended the last phase of the COVID-19 lockdown nightmare. THE PUBLIC Health Commissioner, Jude Gedeon, announced that the government ended restriction measures on April 12 since the island nation’s “vaccination coverage is improving and going well, and we have registered a drop in the numbers of admissions to the hospital linked to COVID-19.” “Cinemas, casinos, and standalone bars that were closed are now getting permission to open. Gatherings among family members are now permitted, however it is necessary that they practice restraints, control, and take into account vulnerable people in the households, especially if they have not been vaccinated,” said Gedeon. The Importance of Local Knowledge Mark Schmidt, Pronet Gaming’s Director of Sales for Africa, dispels a host of commonly-held myths about the online gaming market OUTSIDE OF Africa, there are still many misconceptions about the nature of the online gaming industry on the continent. For some European operators entering the market, the mindset is that Africa – arguably the most diverse continent in the world – can be treated simply as one enormous country. That approach can lead to fir t-world products being thrust into the developing world, without taking into account specific factors that would certainly be closely examined when strategising entry into newly regulated territories in Europe, for example. The one-size-fits-all methodology simpl does not stick, and it is why we have seen some brands depart the market with their tail between their legs so quickly after entry. When you are as deeply involved as we are, you also become attuned to myths being attributed to Africa. There is a line of thinking that African players are nervous about novelty and fearful of trying something new. Not only is this a gross generalisation, it is also patently untrue. In fact, Africa is at the forefront of innovation worldwide when it comes to the delivery of online gaming to suit user needs. You only need look at the average number of users each betting brand has across various

countries to be presented with figures that would make European operators blush. Right across the continent, operators are getting it right when it comes to player trust and, in turn, retention. In a world in which many retail betting outlets have been shut for long periods over the past year, African players have been entertained while at home not only through sports betting, but also by joining free-to-play (FTP) jackpot games, virtual products and casino offerings. Operators have successfully transformed themselves into entertainment hubs, rather than strictly betting providers. Another element where Africa is playing a world-leading role is within payments. In Kenya, the use of mobile phones as payment devices is widespread; one survey last year found that in Uganda, 43 per cent of people had a mobile money account and in Kenya, the number was 72 per cent. While in other parts of Africa you can only deposit and withdraw to and from a gambling site using a bank transfer, which can take hours, in Kenya money can be moved into and out of an account in a matter of seconds. A successful approach to online gaming in Africa entails listening to what clients and the market wants in a particular location

and localising the offering accordingly, right across the spectrum – from products to UI/ UX, payments, mobile and omni-channel solutions and bonusing, to name but a few key elements. Localisation is crucial, with the differences between Kenya and Nigeria proving a good case in point. In Kenya, FTP games are hugely popular and players do not necessarily have to spend anything to enter contests that contain large jackpots. In Nigeria, where lottery has great appeal, there are certain virtual games that are must-haves for operators. At Pronet Gaming (pronetgaming.com), we take a consultative sales and business development approach to any new client, in any new country. Our clients play an active role within our approach and we listen to them and adapt to their needs. We also have a very strong executive and product team. This provides us with the edge over our competitors in the region in terms of knowledge, while also positioning ourselves strongly in being able to listen to and respond quickly to needs on the ground. There is no substitute for experience when it comes to understanding the landscape across this wonderful, complex continent.

Mark Schmidt is Director of Sales, Africa at Pronet Gaming. With a long history of working within African wagering and sports markets, he has been instrumental in utilising the continent’s growing network infrastructure and smartphone penetration to deliver Pronet’s platform. He previously held senior roles at IMG Arena and Sportradar.

NorthWest Gambling Board Remains Suspended Pending MEC’s Appeal The North West Gambling Board remains suspended pending an appeal by the Province’s MEC following a recent judgement against her in the Mahikeng High Court. In late February, the˜Judge in the matter ruled that North West Economic Development MEC Keneetswe Mosenogi improperly exercised her power when she ÿred ÿve gambling board members. JUDGE SAMKELO Gura…threw out a…forensic report upon which the MEC based her decision to remove the board.… Board members approached the court on July 30 asking it to review and declare unconstitutional a decision by the provincial finance department to appoint the forensic firm in March 2019 and set aside the findings. The North West economic development MEC…Keneetswe Mosenogi…relied on the report’s findings about misconduct and irregular expenditure to remove five members from the board. Fired board members also succeeded in

stopping the MEC appointing their replacements, saying the Gobodo report was factually incorrect and the findings of misconduct erroneous. “Gobodo relied on outdated and irrelevant policy documents in determining whether the applicants lodged irregular claims,” they said in their court papers. “Gobodo’s failure to consult with and seek the input of members of the board resulted in the erroneous allegations and considerations of irrelevant and inapplicable documents by Gobodo.” The court found that various key individuals who could have been interviewed during the

investigation were not. Some individuals against whom findings were made were not provided with an opportunity to respond. Some allegations in the report do not relate to the current events but historical events which occurred during the term of the previous board. In dismissing the board members, said Gura, Mosenogi acted irrationally because she relied on a flawed report. The judge criticised the MEC for firing the five when she knew they had approached the court asking it to set aside the report. He described it as “an improper exercise of public power”. Navigating Turbulent Times and the Importance of Good Governance by Shuaib Jooman, Governance & Board Advisory Lead at GRIPP Advisory

Good governance is beneficial to the stakeholder community through the creation and enhancement of sustainable shared value.

SOUND GOVERNANCE practices build trust, inspire confidence, and advocate an organisation as being a responsible corporate citizen. Research suggests that investors are willing to pay a premium for a well governed organisation. Moreover, good governance is inextricably linked to good performance, therefore making it a critical success factor. An organisation’s governance processes should extend beyond mere siloed “tick-boxing” and pivot focus to an outcomes-based approach. With the recent spate of governance failures coupled with the impact of

geographical complexities, amongst others. As such, organisations are identifying innovative ways of staying competitive and remaining relevant. The proliferation of Covid-19 is ubiquitous and spread effortlessly across the globe wreaking havoc by creating uncertainty in geographies, their economies and markets, as well as causing panic throughout civil societies. Africa has not been spared and select industries were and still are disproportionality affected. Gaming operators are still reeling from the impact of lockdown measures which included;

“Sound governance practices build trust, inspire confidence, and advocate an organisation as being a responsible corporate citizen,” - Shuaib Jooman, Governance & Board Advisory Lead at GRIPP Advisory Covid-19, stakeholders are demanding greater transparency, accountability, fairness, and inclusivity from organisations. This is amplified in the context of other fundamental and structural changes within the business environment. These changes are centred around themes such as globalisation, climate change, disruptive technologies, and social, political, and

22

inter alia, travel bans, social distancing on the gaming floor, curfews, supply chain disruptions, reduced disposable income, limitations on numbers at gatherings, and prohibition on the sale of alcohol. This led to significant operational losses and stringent cost cutting measures within the gaming sector. This, on the back of already anaemic

economies on the African continent, has and continues to have dire consequences for organisations large and small alike, with ripple effects and unintended consequences experienced throughout economies and its actors. Could the pandemic be termed a Black Swan event? In his book titled The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable, Nassim Taleb postulates that such an event has the three attributes. “First, it is an outlier, as it lies outside the realm of regular expectations, because nothing in the past can convincingly point to its possibility. Second, it carries an extreme impact. Third, in spite of its outlier status, human nature makes us concoct explanations for its occurrence after the fact, making it explainable and predictable.” The very difficult question that seems to be propping up time and time again is “Were organisations adequately prepared, resilient and agile enough to respond to the challenges that the virus has brought?” The short answer is no. Ben Okri, in his essays, opines “Nature and history are not just about the survival of the fittest, but also about the survival of the wisest, the most adaptive and the most aware.” This piece aims at providing certain topics, touch points and questions on

what the governing body and senior management teams should be focusing their attention on during such a time. Some of these have been set out below. Business models need to be transformed. There has been significant uptake from consumers in adopting technology to fulfil their requirements; from online shopping to exercise routines and medical consultations. Similar conversations are required within the gaming industry around how to better leverage the efficiencies of technology to keep and increase the customer base. Health and safety of employees should be a primary concern. Employees should be fully informed about the risks of Covid-19 and measures that need to be taken to mitigate infection and equally important the spread thereof. Is there a health and safety committee championing the process? Is communication to all staff relevant and timeous. Who do employees turn to for assistance? Has the organisation provided employees with the means to mitigate potential infection? Business continuity and disaster recovery plans have been put to the test. These documents should articulate processes that need to be activated during crises. Have all considerations, risks and scenarios affecting the organisation and its material stakeholders been taken into account? Are these documents fluid and updated as and when new information becomes available following an agreed governance process and framework? Is IT infrastructure sufficiently robust and secure to enable employees to work remotely? How will employees continue to work remotely and engage with clients and suppliers. Financial planning and cashflow is a key focus area. Organisations have experienced significant pressure on their cash flow levels. A fine balancing act is required to meet working capital requirements with effective planning and matching of current assets to current liabilities. Options could include postponing CAPEX, seeking various financing options, cost cutting measures and restructuring, enhanced debtors and

April / May 2021

creditors management, diversifying revenue streams and applying for government support. Cost optimisation through improved workforce management and improved efficiency as well as outsourcing of non-core functions. Understanding the risk universe, conducting risk assessments, and reviewing risk registers should be prioritised to ensure that the organisation is equipped to handle exposure. Should risk be mitigated, accepted, or transferred? Is the organisation’s insurance coverage adequate or does it need to be reviewed and assessed? Scenario analyses and brainstorming various possibilities and probabilities that could play out within the short, medium and long term. What are the actions necessary for the governing body and senior management? Do each of these scenarios have action plans coupled with timelines and key responsible individuals. Increase in fraud, corruption and theft owing to lack of perceived oversight. Nefarious criminals and employees are always on the lookout for ways to gain from such situations. Covid-19 creates new opportunities for these individuals to exploit the vulnerable. Organisational internal controls may be lacking due to attention been focussed on more pressing matters. Succession planning and policies ensures that organisations continue throughout and after this pandemic. Have key individuals and positions been identified with possible successors should they become ill or leave the employ of the organisation. Stakeholder engagement and transparency is pivotal. Material stakeholders should be kept informed through various communication platforms. There are many lessons to be learnt from the pandemic. With the rollout of the various vaccines, markets have started to experience some buoyancy. There is talk within certain circles that online gaming be an agenda point at governing body level, together with conversations around its feasibility and

uptake from traditional brick-and-mortar operators. Seemingly, the gaming industry on the African continent has been lagging on this front. Should blame be apportioned to Covid-19 or complacency? There are regulatory hurdles that need to be overcome but these are not insurmountable. The African continent does however require the infrastructure and favourable regulation to make this a success. TCSJOHNHUXLEY’s Chipper Champ UV Shortlisted for Global Gaming Awards 2021 TCSJOHNHUXLEY the world’s premier manufacturer and supplier of live table gaming products and services, is pleased to announce Chipper Champ UV has been shortlisted for the˜Global Gaming Awards London 2021˜in the˜Product Launch of the Year category. ˜The Shortlist was decided after a rigorous process and recognises companies who have performed well in the EMEA region in the past 12 months. Sun International Optimistic Despite R1.1bn Loss Despite income from its operations plunging by almost half to R6.1bn as reported in the group’s recent ÿnancial results, Sun International remains optimistic and says the recovery of SA hotels and casinos might be gradual, but it is upbeat about its debt and cash position. SUN INTERNATIONAL is the owner of landmark casino complexes in South Africa such as Sun City, GrandWest and Boardwalk and the drastic drop in income, largely driven by government-instituted lockdown measures to curb the spread of the covid-19 pandemic virus, saw the group…report a R1.1 billion headline loss for the year. Sun International, along with other gaming and hospitality groups, was forced to shut operations for just more than three months (late March to June) in 2020, but faced ongoing trade restrictions (domestic and international travel bans, liquor bans, curfews, capacity limits due social distancing rules and so on). Sun City in North West province, the group’s largest property, took the most pain after only being able to reopen in September. This led to the value of the resort, which is home to the Palace of the Lost City and other landmark tourist attractions, being impaired by around R900 million at year-end. “The Covid-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the group, with all operations being closed for three months or longer and the March 2020 trading significantly disrupted. Income from continuing operations declined by 49% from R11.8 billion to R6.1 billion and adjusted Ebitda [earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation] reduced by 72% from R3.2 billion to R897 million,” Sun International says in its JSE results Sens statement. “Our total group adjusted headline earnings declined from R763 million to a loss of R1.1 billion with an adjusted headline loss of 633 cents per share,” it adds. Unsurprisingly, the group took its biggest hit in the first half of the year to

26

Gaming For Africa

June 2020, when South Africa was under its hardest lockdowns (between late March and June). Income from its main South African business declined 55% to R2.5 billion for the half-year compared with its corresponding half year to end-June 2019. This led to a 95% plunge in adjusted Ebitda for its 2020 half-year, to R80 million. With the resumption of trading of most operations from July 1, 2020, Sun International notes that income and adjusted Ebitda improved steadily throughout the remaining six months until the move to adjusted Level 3 lockdown, coupled with the imposition of the 8pm curfew and alcohol sales ban in midDecember 2020. “This led to a significant drop in activity and cancellation of bookings for the second half of December and into January 2021,” it says. “As a result of the extended lockdown and anticipated slow recovery we incurred impairment charges of R1.3 billion – being Sun City [R900 million], Boardwalk [R180 million], the Maslow Sandton [R96 million] and intangible assets of R72 million,” it adds. Commenting on the results in a separate media statement, Sun International CEO Anthony Leeming said the group took key steps during the year to manage the impact of the pandemic on the business. “[This] ensured that the group was in a strong position to deal with the lockdown and the restrictions imposed on its operations, but more importantly, they have placed the group on a solid footing for a post Covid-19 sustainable recovery,” he noted. “We worked hard to reduce costs, optimise working capital, prioritise capital

investment and negotiate with lenders, service providers and suppliers for either a waiver, reduction or deferment of payments. We formulated and implemented plans to achieve operational efficiencies and restructured certain parts of the business,” he added. Leeming said Sun International also used the lockdown period to critically assess the group’s operational practices, systems, marketing and guest experience. “Several initiatives were undertaken which are having and will have a positive impact on the group’s future results,” he stressed. Measures Sun International took in responding to the pandemic included:… Addressing short-term liquidity risks, including an up to 60% reduction in payroll costs during lockdown, deferring all capital investment other than critical spend and announcing the closure of the Naledi Sun and…Carousel casinos; Accelerating the disposal of certain non-core assets; The successful conclusion of a R1.2 billion rights offer; and, Disposing of the group’s interest in Sun Dreams in Latin America, which became effective on October 31, 2020. “The capital raise as a result of the rights offer and the proceeds from the disposal of Sun Dreams has improved our liquidity position and significantly strengthened the group’s balance sheet,” Leeming said. “These actions and the various operational initiatives which we have undertaken and implemented in the last 12 months have ensured that the group remains well placed to be able to deal with the current and future Covid-19 challenges and has strongly positioned the group to recover and grow into the future.”

Online Casinos in South Africa will ‘need regulatory framework’ SBC Digital Africa On-Demand South Africa – the birthplace of Nelson Mandela and home to the Springboks. Alongside those, the country is also home to 41 licenced casinos.˜ OPENING DAY one of the recent…SBCDigital – Africa, the panel entitled ‘Lie of the Land: The future of brick-and-mortar casinos’, session sponsor by…ThunderSpin, saw the panel discuss the recent reiteration from the National Gambling board that online casino gaming is illegal and asked the question: is the South Africa casino gaming industry being left behind by its refusal to embrace online?……

Garron Whitesman, founding partner at Whitesman Lurie, noted the country faces a situation where the law is ‘fairly clear’, highlighting principle 7 of the…National Gambling Act, which outlaws the participation in or making available of interactive games without a licence or, if not permitted, through any other law.… He added: “Licences are not able to be obtained for online casinos or interactive games which is what online casinos would fall under. This is the situation that was confirmed by the Supreme Court of Appeal a number of years ago and is the law as it stands according to the authorities.… “In principle, it’s outlawed in South Africa. Now, the question is: what is outlawed? A lot of people don’t understand what the outline of that is and how the public will perceive it or actually even know about it.” Emphasising the substantial growth in online gambling during the pandemic, not only in South Africa but all over the world, Whitesman claimed that before the outbreak, people would have gambled wherever they could and that would have included operators who target South Africa from abroad, many of whom, he noted, were ‘highly reputable operators’.… Whitesman continued: “What is lawful is the placing of fixed outcome bets on the contingencies which are o¡ ered by licenced South African bookmakers. I think where some of that confusion has also arisen is the type of

30

Gaming For Africa

contingencies that we’ve seen being allowed over the last year to two years by some of the regulators in South Africa that have been very casino in nature, and I think we’re starting to get very close to casino games being o¡ ered online through bookmakers in South Africa, if they fall under what is permitted through our law and what a bookermaker can actually do.” Joining Whitesman on the panel, which was moderated by…Roy Bannister, executive director at…Gaming for Africa, was…Alessandro Fried, founder of…BtoBet,…Adhika Singh, chief operating officer at…GRIPPAdvisory,…MartinSack, director of…Brainstorm Online…and…Nit esh Matai, general manager of…Sunbet.… Just as the conversation was swaying in another direction, Sack brought the topic back, where he noted: “I think if you take a look at the major players in the land-based industry in South Africa, it’s absolutely clear that there is a desire to have an online presence in some way shape or form.… “I don’t believe there is anybody in the landbased industry left in South Africa that is fighting against online or any of the contingencies for online. There were issues last year where some of the contingencies were hotly debated but those seem to have just disappeared.”……… Responding to Sack’s remarks, Whitesman stated he was ‘convinced’ the South African landbased industry wants to go online, yet questioned if they want to go online with contingencies that compete with their land-based o¡ erings.… Rounding o¡ the section of the panel, Matai concluded that there can be ‘no confusion’ about land-based desires to go online but stressed that

none of it is ‘worth doing’ unless it is done with the proper framework with regulation and legislation.… He finished: “We work within a very defined and regulated corporate environment as well as a very defined and corporate and regulated gaming environment. It’s very easy for an international operator that isn’t subject to those regulations and corporate governance that we are in South Africa, as a listed entity, to come into this market and have a dip.… “We have the desire, we have the need. The appetite is there to go online but it has to come within a framework that’s properly regulated and managed.” This week’s SBC Digital Africa conference and exhibition features a speaker line-up of 60 senior executives and specialists, all ready to share hardto-find information about the continent’s best opportunities for betting and gaming operators. The agenda for the event on…March 3031, 2021,…includedsessions that examine the future of the markets in South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Kenya and Côte d’Ivoire, and deliver insights on key issues such as payments technology, marketing strategies and the growth of esports. South Africa: Minister and Lottery Board ‘At War’ Over New Chair Numerous Lottery grants are being investigated for corruption MEMBERS OF the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) board have objected to Trade and Industry minister Ebrahimn Patel extending the term of his representative as its acting chairperson. Patel addressed the Trade and Industry Parliamentary Portfolio Committee to get its input.… Communications between the board and the minister trying to address corruption in the NLC has been reduced to lawyers’ letters and official correspondence. Relations between Minister of Trade and Industry Ebrahim Patel and the board of the NLC are now largely reduced to exchanges of lawyers’ letters and official correspondence. This became evident when the minister addressed the Trade and Industry Parliamentary Portfolio Committee recently, which has oversight responsibility of the Lottery, at a virtual meeting. The battle between Patel and the NLC has also involved briefings to selected media, as well as leaks of letters and documents. Patel had requested a meeting with the portfolio committee to discuss the extension of the term of Zandile Brown, his representative on the NLC board and its acting chairperson. Brown, whose term as acting chair ends at midnight on 31 March, was appointed in the acting position after the 11-year tenure of the NLC’s former scandal-ridden chairperson Alfred Nevhutanda. The NLC board and the minister have been at war over the appointment of Brown. Four members of the board wrote to Patel claiming that he did not have the authority to appoint an acting chairperson, and it was their responsibility to make the appointment. Patel struck a cautious note, telling the committee that he had sought legal advice and was told that he had the authority to appoint an acting chairperson until such time as a full time appointment was made. According to Patel, he now has three options: to appoint an outsider as chairperson of the board, appoint another member of the NLC, or extend Brown’s acting term “for a short period” until a new permanent chairperson is appointed.

Dean MacPherson, DA shadow minister for trade and industry, said, “This is not even a low grade civil war taking place between the minister and the NLC. It is a full scale nuclear war that is unfolding. This is for obvious reasons ... there is entrenched patronage and access to millions of rands that is at play here.” Patel declined to identify the four board members who had written to him. But there are currently only five NLC board members and it seems highly improbable that Brown, as the minister’s representative on the board, is one of them. The other members are Advocate William Huma, who applied for the vacant chairperson post but did not make the final shortlist of three, Ms Doris Dondor, Ms Yaswant Gordhan and Dr Muthuhadini Madzivhandila, who was placed third on the shortlist. (GroundUp recently reported that R5 million was paid towards Huma’s house by an organisation that received an NLC grant.) “It would be very helpful to remove uncertainty by getting any thoughts that the portfolio committee may have,” Patel said. “I hope that ... as soon as we have the process completed for a permanent chairperson, the NLC will be able to have this governance issue fully resolved, and that we are all working to ensure that, in fact, the NLC is able to serve the people of South Africa in terms of the Act and within the framework of our Constitution.” DA MP Mat Cuthbert said, “We would like to ask the minister what action he is going to take against those four board members who have not only launched a fightback campaign against him in the media through strategic leaks but have also threatened legal action against the minister, and have constantly sought to undermine him, even though he has given them sufficient rope. “We have long called for the NLC ... board to be sacked considering the fact that they have all failed to act while the looting continued unabated at the NLC.” ANC MP Zolile Burns-Ncamashe said, “What I pick up is that the engagement and the communication with [the NLC] or the board, is that they are communicating through letters and so forth, and it shows that there are serious challenges.”

ACDP MP Wayne Thring called on Patel to ensure that “any and every allegation that has been levelled against board members of the NLC must be dealt with so that we have an NLC that is credible, that is transparent, that has the respect ... of citizens of South Africa.” A previous attempt by Patel to appoint a chairperson was derailed after Parliament’s chief legal officer questioned the legality of the process being followed. The process had to be restarted with members of the portfolio committee compiling a shortlist of eight from the 39 candidates, who were then interviewed for the post. The new shortlist of three names has been submitted to Parliament, which is currently in recess. The National Assembly must first debate and adopt the parliamentary committee’s report on the shortlisting before it is submitted to Patel, who will then appoint one of the three shortlisted candidates as the new permanent NLC board chairperson. When he extended Brown’s acting appointment to 31 March, Patel said his legal advice was that there was no reason that he should not extend her term for two more months. Patel previously clashed with the Board when it sent him a lawyer’s letter demanding that he hand over an independent forensic report into allegedly corrupt Lottery-funded projects. The board threatened to drag the minister to court if he refused to hand over the dossier, which had been handed over to the Hawks to investigate. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is also investigating the NLC. The dossier dealt with four projects involving suspended Lottery COO Philemon Letwaba and members of his family, as well as lawyer Lesley Ramulifho, who has profited from Lottery grants. The number of projects being investigated by the Hawks and the SIU has swelled to over 20, with new ones “being added to the list all the time” a wellinformed source said. R1.8-million Invested in Future Stars of Horseracing A group of apprentice jockeys from the South African Jockey Academy (SAJA) recentl visited the Hollywoodbets Team Support ofÿce in Umhlanga for a special day away from the track. The company awarded bursaries to 16 of the students to cover their training and accommodation fees, enabling them to continue pursuing their dream of becoming top jockeys in the future. The community-focussed betting operator also made a donation towards replacing their broken tractor. This brought their total investment to more than R1.8 million.

DUE TO the countrywide lockdown, funding was crucial for most of SAJA’s apprentices. “Hollywoodbets has blessed the South African Jockey Academy by awarding us with 16 bursaries for our apprentices that will go towards our operational costs. Our apprentices have come from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and their parents can’t afford to pay these fees; this is where Hollywoodbets stepped in to help the parents. If it wasn’t for this generous contribution, we would be closing our doors. So, to Hollywoodbets, thank you for everything you have done for us,” said Graham Bailey, Headmaster of SAJA.

36

…Hollywoodbets and SAJA first began their relationship back in 2020 when the company offered their support to seven apprentices through bursaries. The company admires the work done by SAJA and will continue to offer their assistance to the future stars of the horse racing community. Dermot O’Connell, Hollywoodbets Betting Operations Manager, explained how their relationship with SAJA has grown over the years. “After seeing the great work being done by the academy, we decided to increase our financial support. This handover is very important to Hollywoodbets because it is a reinvestment

into an industry that is critically important to us. We are also investing in the future of young, potential champion jockeys and it is a very exciting project for us to be involved in,” he said. Hollywoodbets Brand Ambassador and South African Jockey Champion, Anthony Delpech, was excited to also be a part of the event as an alumnus of SAJA. “I have done a lot of travelling and nothing compares to what we have here in South Africa. SAJA is one of the best academies in the world and this support from Hollywoodbets will give the apprentices an opportunity to be successful in the horse racing industry,” he said.

Royal Flush for Sandi as She Bids Farewell to Wild Coast Sun after 35 Years Decades of memories including elephants with pink toenails and a roulette photoshoot in the ocean THREE GENERATIONS of guests have come through the doors of the Wild Coast Sun on the Eastern Cape border since Sandi Burger started working at the Resort in 1986, and it’s these faces that the PR and Promotions Manager will miss most when she retires at the end of April 2021. “First the fathers came, they brought their sons, and now come with their grandsons. Our regular clients make Wild Coast Sun like a big family, and it’s like a reunion on an on-going basis,” Burger said. Her journey with the Resort started in 1986 as promotions secretary. “I came from an advertising agency in Johannesburg but was already familiar with the area as my family had a holiday home on the South Coast of KwaZuluNatal,” Burger explains. Her first General Manager was legendary Alberto ‘Chico’ Chiaranda, Italian, for whom the Chico’s Restaurant is named. Since then, she has worked under five General Managers, ending with Peter Tshidi who took over the reins last year. “Coming from a five-star background, Peter has raised the standards and brought the Wild Coast Sun back to a four-star grading. During lockdown he never took his foot o¡ the gas and kept the team together online, discussing what we would be doing when we re-opened and how business would have to adapt. He is all about people, be it the guests or the sta¡ and his vision is taking the Resort from good to great,” Burger said. “It has been gratifying to see many people who started out at Wild Coast Sun going on to hold high positions within the hotel industry. Alberto remains a major influence on my career – he taught us customer service and the love for the industry, based on family values.” She credits Myan Moodley, who began his tenure General Manager in 2014, “for bringing back the passion” to the property. “Wild Coast Sun, which was then located in what was known as the Transkei, was first opened as a Holiday Inn and only later changed to becoming a Sun International Resort. At the time, sta¡ had to have a work permit to work in the Transkei.” With such a long work history at the property, Burger has held various roles, including promotions coordinator, working for the convention centre and also inside the casino as MVG and Gaming Promotions Manager, before becoming the complex promotions manager, and

later, the marketing manager. “I remember the heydays when gambling was still illegal in South Africa and we had 36 scheduled busses arriving from Durban every Saturday night, and additional unscheduled busses parked outside. We had over 1…000 machines and 60 tables.” Over the years, Burger has witnessed how technology has transformed gaming, o¡ ering new ways to reward customers. “With Covid-19 we moved away from draws and started an electronic bonus system, o¡ ering free plays. Promotions are much more targeted than they used to be.” In her early days, Burger recalls the industry was very leisure orientated. “We had a limited Customer Relationship Management programme and the launch of Sun International’s Most Valued Guest (MVG) programme, whereby you could reward customers, was a pivotal moment for casinos. Through this loyalty programme people are rewarded for their play in a fairer manner, with things like room nights, meals or drinks.” In 1986, the hotel was increased from 240 to 396 rooms, when the ‘new wing’ was added, along with a restaurant and swimming pool. “It’s still called the new wing, 35 years later,” laughed Burger. The Convention Centre was built in 1990, and in 2010, the property had a R460-million revamp, with the addition of the Wild Waves Water Park. “The entire hotel was gutted and stripped to bare concrete, it was basically a rebuild.” More recently, a soft refurbishment was completed and the resort was upgraded to a four-star grading. Burger has many memories of fabulous entertainment events held at Wild Coast Sun. “We used to do the Durban July functions, erecting a marquee with 300 people. There was a tattersall and a tab and we had betting and bookmaking, without any licence restrictions at the time.”

When the pool reopened in the 1980s, Sol Kerzner’s irrepressible PR Melanie Millin-Moore brought in live elephants with pink toenails, mermaids and pink balloons. Burger also recalled a photoshoot featuring models at a roulette table – in the ocean. Former Miss South Africa, Wilma van der Bijl and American actor, Robert Wagner cut the ribbon at the opening of the convention centre. “And of course there was our Tropical Nites theatre, which hosted many international shows and extravaganzas.” Recalling the Chippendales, a male dance troupe which was first played in South Africa at the Wild Coast Sun, Burger said screams of excited women had “rung in my ears for days”. And not forgetting the men, there was the Wild Orchid dance review bar with speciality acts. “But everything changed in 1999 when gambling was legalised in South Africa and casinos opened throughout the country.… It was available, on your doorstep. We rightsized our casino with less machines and tables.” As a keen golfer for the past 30 years, arranging golf tournaments like the Sunshine Tour and helping with the handicapping were a most enjoyable part of Burger’s job.…She regularly plays on the 18-hole course, designed by American golfer, Robert Trent Jones II and built in 1983. “I met Robert two years ago when he came back to look at the course, it was very exciting,” she said. “He said the bunkers were still exactly the way he had designed them, and was delighted at its pristine condition.” “I plan to spend my retirement relaxing, playing golf and continuing with my creative hobbies which include painting, cooking, baking and gardening - all the things you don’t have time for usually. “Wild Coast Sun has always been an amazing beach resort for MVG members and leisure clients, and it is going to remain that and continue to grow and find new generations of guests to thrill and excited.” Tshidi said Burger’s departure would leave a very lively void in his team. “Sandi’s extensive knowledge of the property, her sense of humour and her can-do attitude will be missed. But we know we will still see her, since she might avoid the office, but she definitely won’t be able to stay o¡ our greens.” April / May 2021

The Nigerian Federal Government started moves Leadinghas Gambling Trade aimed at putting an end to the activities of illegal lottery News Publication & Newsfeed: operators, which leave losses amounting to more than one tril ion Naira annually. To this end, the federal government through the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) is to police unauthorized online games. NATIONAL LOTTERY Regulatory Commission is also considering on one hand to enlist the help of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to monitor the payment settlement services to unauthorized lottery operations; and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on another to ban illegal lottery and gambling activities on GSM networks. It will be recalled that Mr Bello Maigari, acting executive secretary, National Lottery Trust Fund (NLTF) has last week raised alarm over the activities of illegal lottery operators. Maigari, said that there were many lottery operators in the country without a licence, adding that this has resulted to leakages in terms of what they were supposed to remit to the trust fund. “Nigerian government is losing more than one trillion Naira every year because of illegal operators. There are a lot of illegal operators in the industry and these are part of the reasons why there are leakages. Some are conducting this business without being regulated and there are chances that such proceeds will be channelled towards crime, fraud and money laundering,” he said.
