IT HAS been heartwarming to see casinos heed the call to lend a helping hand during the recent Mandela Day. While we have highlighted a few initiatives in this issue of Gaming for Africa, it is easy to forget that gambling operators work tirelessly and often without recognition behind-the-scenes 365 days a year as their CSI Initiatives reach the communities in which they operate.

At the recent National Gambling Board conference it was exciting to see gambling regulators and operators try to understand each others perspectives; the gambling operator that feels regulators are over-regulating and stifling the free market and regulators who feel that unfettered, operators will increase the public propensity to gamble. Dialogue is always good when the future of a very important industry is at stake.

Opportunities aplenty for Business Tourism in Africa – PwC Africa Hotel Outlook Report Growth in Africa’s hotel sector is expected to remain positive over the next five years despite current economic uncertainty and tempered foreign investment. Opportunities are aplenty for business tourism in developing economies with governments taking steps to promote their MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) infrastructure to attract more business tourists. In addition, Airbnb is also gaining momentum as a mainstream tourist option across the African continent. THESE ARE some of the key findings from a report issued by PwC on Africa’s hotel sector. PwC’s ninth edition of the Hotels Outlook: 2019-2023 includes information about hotel accommodation in South Africa, Nigeria, Mauritius, Kenya and Tanzania. Pietro Calicchio, Hospitality Industry Leader, PwC Southern Africa says: “While leisure is an important component of the tourism industry, governments are taking steps to develop more diverse initiatives, fueled by business tourism and conferencing. Business tourism is a critical component to the growth of African economies – business events are increasingly being held in a number of diverse locations across the continent. South Africa is already established as the leading convention destination in Africa led by Cape Town, which is among the top-50 conventions cities in the world. In the coming months, South Africa will host a number of events, in particular the World Economic Forum on Africa, attracting experts, business leaders, and governments from around the world. “This is an excellent opportunity for Africa to be branded as a destination that not only offers an amazing travel experience but one also for business and global conferences,” Calicchio adds. In South Africa, hotel room revenue rose only 0.5% in 2018, its smallest increase during the past six years. Growth is expected to pick up beginning in 2019 and is forecast to expand to R19.7 billion in 2023, up 3.3% compounded annually, from R16.7 billion in 2018. This relatively modest increase will reflect the expectation of low ADR (average daily rate) growth, as growth in online booking and the increasing use of travel sites promotes price shopping. Growth in foreign visitors to South Africa dropped to 1.7% in 2018, down from the 2.4% gain in 2017 and the 12.8% increase in 2016. The slowdown in large partly reflected concerns about the drought in Cape Town and the possible approach of Day Zero when Cape Town would run out of water. Although the threat of a Day Zero has been alleviated, we don’t expect a rebound in foreign tourism in 2019. For the forecast period as a whole, foreign tourism is forecast to rise at an estimated 2.9% compounded annually to 12.1 million in 2023 from 10.5 million in 2018. It is notable that the number of foreign visitors in 2018 from Europe fell 2.5% and from Asia-Pacific by 1.9%. Declines from the UK, Germany, France and the Netherlands contributed to the drop from Europe, while India, China and Australia posted decreases from Asia-Pacific. On a percentage bases, Brazil recorded the largest percentage increase with a 4.0% gain and

visitors from the US and Canada rose 1.7% and 0.9% respectively. Of African visitors, the largest number came from Zimbabwe at 2.2 million, followed by Lesotho at 1.7 million and Mozambique at 1.4 million. The Tourism Amendment Bill 2019 was issued in the Government Gazette on 12 April 2019. The most controversial aspect of the Bill is the proposal to regulate ‘short-term home rentals’ under the Tourism Act. This means home-sharing apps such as Airbnb and their hosts may soon be regulated in South Africa. During the next five years, Nigeria is expected to be the fastest-growing market with a projected 12.0% compound annual increase. Tanzania and Kenya are projected to be the next fastest growing with compound annual increases of 8.2% and 7.4%, respectively. Hotel room revenue for the five markets (South Africa, Nigeria, Mauritius, Kenya and Tanzania) as a group will increase at a 5.8% compound annual rate to R50.6 billion in 2023 from R38.1 billion in 2018.

Hotel accommodation: South Africa – Nigeria – Mauritius – Kenya – Tanzania

Guest nights in five-star hotels fell 11.1% amidst concerns about the drought in Cape Town and due to general economic pressures. Guest nights are expected to remain stable in 2019 and then return to their 2015-17 levels beginning in 2020. The Airbnb market has grown in South Africa. It is believed that much of the Airbnb traffic occurs at peak periods when hotels are full. It is at the lower end of the market that moderately priced hotels face growing competition from Airbnb outlets. In Nigeria, room revenue rose 20.0% in 2018, fueled mainly by an increase in guest nights. Overall hotel room revenue is expected to expand at a 12.0% compound annual rate to $445 million (R5.9 billion) in 2023 from $252 million (R3.3 billion) in 2018. Guest nights will continue to increase over the forecast period, rising at a 7.6% compound annual rate to 2.6 million in 2023 from 1.8 million in 2018. Hotel room revenue in Mauritius is expected to grow at a 5.7% compound annual rate to 2023. An expected increase in room capacity and less aggressive growth in ADR should have a positive impact on guest nights, if supported by an increase in airline capacity and routes. Challenges that remain for operators are their actions with regards to sustainability, labour and the regulation of the informal sector. The January 2019 terror attack at a hotel and office complex in Nairobi may temporarily impact tourist arrivals and guest nights in Kenya. Kenya will benefit from growing demand for experiences and adventure, with mid-scale hotels being the main driver, but growth in Airbnb and the shared economy will cut into the hotel market. Tanzania is targeting India and China to bolster tourism and drive growth in guest nights. To widen its appeal beyond adventure tourism, the Government is looking to expand its MICE offering to boost business tourism. Namibia has been targeting the Asian and American markets and has a seen a small growth in Chinese arrivals to Namibia. Leisure tourism to Namibia contracted slightly in 2018 and is expected to decline in 2019. In Windhoek (300+ rentals) and Swakopmund (400+ rentals), Airbnb has placed the hospitality market under pressure in terms of both supply and price. The category of ‘home vacation rental’ has not yet been officially recognised by the Namibia Tourism Board and Airbnb providers cannot be registered for now.

In South Africa, the number of available rooms is expected to increase at a 1.2% compound annual rate to 67 200 in 2023 from 63 400 in 2018. With guest nights projected to grow faster than available rooms, the occupancy rate for hotels will increase to a projected 61.1% in 2023 from 59.2% in 2018. While three-star hotels accounted for 36% of all available hotel rooms in South Africa in 2018, it is projected that they will generate 41% of the overall increase in room revenue during the next five years. Room revenue in three-star hotels will expand at a projected 4.3% compound annual rate to R6.4 billion in 2023 from R5.2 billion in 2018. With a number of four-star hotels opening in 201718, available rooms increased 3.4%, the largest increase during the past six years. Guest nights rose 2.4%, the only category to post an increase in 2018. This increase, however, did not match growth in available rooms and Download the full report here, courtesy PwC: https://www.pwc.co.za/en/publications/hospitality-outlook.html the occupancy rate dropped to 65.4%.

Namibia to Lift Gambling Licence Moratorium Over two decades after the Namibian government imposed a moratorium on the issuing of gambling licences, lawmakers are finally ready to lift the moratorium that will allow slot machine owners to operate legally. ACCORDING TO the Minister of Environment and Tourism (MET) Pohamba Shifeta, it is estimated that there are at least 100 000 unlicensed gambling machines in about 3 000 illegal gambling houses countrywide. Shifeta made these remarks recently during a consultative meeting in Oshakati with local slot machine owners. The meeting was held prior to the drafting of the new Gaming and Entertainment Control Act of 2018 which is due to be completed soon. Currently, the gambling industry is regulated under the Casinos and Gambling Houses Act of 1994, to be replaced by the new Act. “This piece of legislation will not only ensure strict regulation of gambling activities, but has new provisions to protect the public who participate in these activities, and the national economy,” says Shifeta. Shifeta said under the new act, all gambling houses must be registered. There will be an electronic monitoring system, and there will be gambling inspectors with the powers to arrest people, and to seize assets when procedures are not followed. The proposed central electronic monitoring system would “detect and monitor significant events associated with gambling machines or any device associated with gambling machines that are made available for play in

Namibia,” he stated. He further added that the gambling board will also require that licensed gambling operators who provide products to consumers put in place measures to help people who might develop a gaming addiction. “The mission is to promote the industry in a more productive and positive light to remove any stigma that exists, we should love one another and share a cake together no one should be left out,” he said. Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairperson Tomas Iindji said the business people were tired of empty promises made over the years about the issue of gambling machines, maintaining that it is time for the leaders to “walk the talk”. “We want to operate legally and access the licenses as urgently as yesterday. The process of securing licenses should not be cumbersome, it must be easy and straightforward. I am of the view that the Government of Namibia is about equal distribution of wealth but we are now defeating our own objectives and ideals. Why is it difficult to do business in Namibia, more especially for the Namibians? The system has to change and our government has all the powers to change the system,” said Iindji. (source: New Era)

North West Gambling Board, Varloflash & Vegas Bingo CSI Initiative Benefits Needy Learners As part of commemorating the legacy of former President Nelson Mandela and his selfless service to humanity, the North West Gambling Board in partnership with its licensees Varloflash and Vegas Bingo spent 67 minutes in remembrance of this stalwart of freedom by putting final touches into a pre-school project that was adopted by the Board in 2016. THE PROJECT was then taken over by Varloflash and Vegas Bingo in 2017 and over four hundred thousand rand (R400 0000) was set aside for the refurbishment of the school. To date the old dilapidated building has been renovated. A borehole and palisade fence have also been erected. Upon completion of the project the pre-school will among others things, boast a sick bay, a walkway, ablution facilities and a food garden. Acting Chief Executive Officer, Harry Mashao says these are ongoing efforts by the Board to contribute into the socio-economic development of marginalized and economically depressed communities. “We are delighted that this project is now nearing its completion. We are duty bound as the Board to help our government address some of the socio-economic challenges confronting our communities. We can only achieve that if we work hand in glove with our licensees “Mr Mashao said. The pre-school was built in 1983 through donations from community members, after they were forcefully removed from their land in the late 1970’s in Koster near Rustenburg and dumped in Ramabatlama village twenty kilometres north of Mahikeng. Since

then no renovations had taken place, and efforts to source funding from private donors drew a blank. Community spokesperson, Mpho Scheepers said this project is will benefit the community in various ways. “A number of learners enrolled at this preschool will surely increase and that is what we are looking for. To give the kids a solid academic foundation. But the project has also had spillover effects through creation of employment for locals. The food gardening project will also benefit impoverished households in the community.” Mr Scheepers said. Varlosflash and Vegas Bingo’s representative, Ms. Thando Mathebula maintained that changing the lives of the poor tops their agenda. “We are humbled to be part of this project. Through our commitment in this project we hope to change the attitudes and perceptions about the gambling industry in our communities and we believe solutions in changing our country’s past shouldn’t be the role of government alone. As business we have an equally important role to play in the socio-economic development of our community.

The Ridge Ladies in Leading Casino Industry Roles eMalahleni’s top entertainment destination, The Ridge Casino, is celebrating women who work in the casino industry this Women’s Month. Meet some of the ladies who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure visitors have an ongoing feast of entertainment 7 days a week, 365 days a year! MARINA COETZEE, Marketing Manager, says she is the person she is today because she believes that we only have one life and it is short. We must make the most of it and do what is important to us. And this includes finding the balance between home and work life. Marina admits that in her career this is where she falls short. However, she constantly reminds herself that no matter what happens, work will always be there, but she may not. So, she makes appointments for after work to force herself to leave on time, and is happy to admit that this strategy seems to be working! But that is not the only challenging part of her day. Marina says that marketing in the casino environment is a high-paced, highly pressurised environment with limited recognition – especially because marketing is seen as a “spender” and not as a revenue generator. However, seeing the results of their marketing campaigns is extremely rewarding. Her most cherished memory in Tsogo Sun was when she was promoted to marketing manager - as the youngest female medium unit marketing manager in the group. But with success came challenges that have grown her as a person. The biggest lesson she has learnt in the workplace is that it’s not personal. It’s never personal at work, even though it might feel that way. When asked what advice she would give young people considering a career in the casino industry she said, “Work hard! It doesn’t matter who you are, what you look like or where you come from, there is one thing that will assist you in moving up, and that is hard work. Make sure that you stay true to yourself, don’t ever compromise on your values and norms. Your hard work will get recognised, maybe not the first, second, third or tenth time, but eventually it 16 I Gaming For Africa I

will, and then success just tastes so much sweeter!” Nqobile Mlilo, Assistant Tables Manager, says her life changed for the better when she realised that it was possible for her to make it in life - for herself and her family. Nqobile’s admits that her daughter is her heartbeat and she is driven to work hard to give her daughter a better life. She says that the family value system that was instilled in her when she was growing up led her to manage her family and business responsibilities without compromising one for the other. But working in the casino industry is not without its challenges. In her day-to-day role she is constantly faced with customer and staff issues because the environment is heavily regulated by policies. On a positive note this means that Nqobile is learning and growing in her role on a daily basis. Besides the on-the-job learning, she was given the opportunity to complete the Gaming Management Development Programme in 2018. This training was the highlight of her career at Tsogo Sun. This is where she rediscovered herself and realised that there was no one limiting her success but herself. She also learnt over the years that you can’t give up after failing once. You need to shake it off and move on. She believes that women are strong and even though the gaming industry does not accommodate women during pregnancy, a strong nature helps them to push through and survive anything. When asked what advice she would give young people considering a career in the casino industry she said, “Gaming is not an easy industry, it needs dedicated people with passion and people that have free spirits, as well as a sense of humour in order to be able to deal with the daily business demands.”

Atheesha Fortune, Tables Manager, might be small in size but she most certainly makes up for it in stature! She has never been afraid, even in her younger years, to face challenges head on. She admits that she has always had the innate drive to be the best and succeed at everything she does. One area that challenges her is finding a balance between her personal life and work life. Atheesha has been blessed with a beautiful daughter who is only seven years old, and a wonderful husband who is hands on and steps up to the plate when she has work commitments. Her family drives her to schedule and use her time wisely so she has time to be with them and watch her daughter grow up. The most challenging aspect of her day-to-day role is to keep the millennial work force motivated and vested in a common goal as a department and team. To do this, Atheesha has to make the job at hand exciting and beneficial to them at all times. The hardest lesson she has had to learn in her working career is that no matter how hard you work, there will always be people who are given opportunities ahead of you. But the rewards far outweigh the challenges. In 2018 she was chosen to study the Executive Development Programme at UNISA and passed with distinction! When asked what advice she would give young people considering a career in the casino industry she said, “The sacrifices endured in this industry are worth it, as there is no industry out there quite like this one! You soon find very successful ways to work around what outside people see as the “schlepps” of the profession. This actually enables you to have more of a meaningful life than people working nine to five jobs.”

New R600m Port Elizabeth Boardwalk Redevelopment

Property developers, Flanagan & Gerard Group and Moolman Group, have signed an agreement with Emfuleni Resorts to extend and upgrade Port Elizabeth’s Boardwalk precinct. THE REDEVELOPMENT will more than double the retail space in the precinct when it opens in 2021, and is expected to cost R600 million. The precinct currently comprises of a 6,000sqm Boardwalk Casino, 140 key 5-Star Boardwalk Hotel, conference facilities, 11,800sqm of existing retail and a five-screen Nu Metro cinema complex. The redevelopment will see this increase to 26,000sqm, including new shops, restaurants, and a new Sun Park Square designed to host major events. Other new developments will include two supermarkets, one speciality food store, two pharmacies and two or more major banks. “We are delighted that the Boardwalk mall development is back on track, said Anthony Leeming, CEO of Sun International.

“When it is complete, the new and expanded mall will complement the Boardwalk’s other leisure offerings, and further serve the needs of surrounding communities. “We view the new mall to be an essential component of the broader Boardwalk precinct, which was identified and earmarked by the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro as an important growth node. We are confident that it will accelerate the metro’s economic growth, job creation and increased returns to the province.” Work on the project is planned to commence in early 2020. In keeping with the team’s commitment to economic development, local contractors and materials will be used wherever possible. The developers will work with a local community liaison officer to ensure optimal positive impact.

Myan Moodley takes the reins at Sibaya There is a new man at the helm of Sun International’s Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom, Myan Moodley. Myan recently took the position of General Manager after a successful tenure at the same group’s Wild Coast Sun Casino. Bringing with him a wealth of experience, this dynamic and career-focused leader has worked in the entertainment and hospitality industry for well over 25 years. HAILING FROM Durban, Myan was born in Tongaat where his father was a truck driver for Hulett’s sugar. His family then moved to Campbells town where he lived most of his life and then relocated again, this time to Phoenix, where he completed his high school career at Greenbury Secondary school. He furthered his studies at the ML Sultan Hotel School after which he moved to Cape Town and this is where his career took off. “My first job was at the Southern Sun Hotel Inn on the Square as a trainee chef but I decided I wanted to move into management, so I could wear a suit.” The next step in his impressive career path was the Ritz Protea, still as a trainee, “But then I had a suit on,” Myan says with a grin. Working as a night auditor he advanced to become night manager and from there, front office manager. This is also where he met his wife, 26 years ago. The two of them moved together to the Strand and then on to the Castle Hotel Group in Camps Bay, which had two guesthouses. Myan feels it is by sheer perseverance that he landed a job at the Cape Sun as a manager. “The industry is small and when I heard they were looking to fill the position I kept going until they afforded me the opportunity. I cemented lifelong friendships at this hotel, and I will always be grateful for my time there.” During his career, Myan has been the general manager at no less than nine properties and was part

of the leadership team that opened four hotels for the Southern Sun group, including Southern Sun Maputo. Other properties he worked at includes the Monte Casino, The Holiday Inn in Milpark, the Cape Sun, and the Grayston where he played host to the Bafana Bafana team during the World Cup in 2010. “I took every opportunity that came my way, no matter what or where it was – I wanted to learn, grow and succeed and was not afraid of change.” When Myan was offered the job as general manager at the Wild Coast Sun, he and his team grew the business by double digits year on year for five consecutive years. He attributes the successes achieved throughout his career to commitment, tenacity, hard work, relationships and “fear of failure which drove me.” Myan says these aspirations drove him to achieve his goals and will continue to form the backbone which motivates him in his new role as General Manager at Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom. “The hospitality industry is exciting but also demands a lot of time and dedication. The people are what makes this industry so special – without the amazing team I work with, it will be impossible to steer this ship in the right direction.” Myan believes in treating employees and colleagues with the utmost respect. “We need to reward people by talking to them, by showing empathy and

Myan Moodley is the new General Manager of the Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom. most importantly being honest with each other.” He has a great love for cars and collected miniature car models all his life. When he is not enjoying this hobby, Myan can be found either on the golf course or behind the stove in the kitchen. “Golf and cooking are two other great loves in my life.” Sustainability and a sense of responsibility for the environment in which he operates is close to his heart. This, and his belief in an ‘open door policy’ towards his staff, will certainly go a long way as Myan takes the helm and steers Sibaya to even greater heights over the coming years. “If you really want something and you have the passion to drive you, you will most certainly reach your goal,” concludes an inspirational Myan.

Montecasino’s Marketing Manager Embraces the new Challenges in ‘the finest casino’ Gareth Kaschula, Montecasino’s Marketing Manager since August 2018, is in his element – in “undoubtedly the finest casino in South Africa, he states, and in an industry and a career he loves. GARETH HAS been in marketing in the casino industry for 24 years. “Apart from the casino offering, there really is no other industry that offers the entertainment and escapism quite like the gaming industry does, he says. Marketing is Gareth’s second career; he made a quick decision that electrical engineering wouldn’t hold his interest, and when he started his first “real job in public relations, he knew that the variety, the people, the different facets and activities in marketing would give him the challenges he was searching for. Gareth grew up in Pietermaritzburg and matriculated from Alexandra Boys High. He spent most of his career in various casinos around the country and he has worked in every aspect of the casino marketing industry, “from being an entertainment manager, promotions manager, marketing manager, to group marketing manager. I’ve had the pleasure of being part of small and big casino builds, launches, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have travelled the world within this industry. Prior to joining Tsogo Sun, Gareth spent seven years with Peermont’s Emperors Palace casino on the East Rand, where he was employed as the Group Gaming Marketing Manager for Peermont. Over the years, his continued education has included an Executive Manage-

ment Programme through the University of Cape Town, and he has received certification by UCT in Digital Marketing. In October 2013, he joined Tsogo Sun as Marketing Manager at Gold Reef City. The big lessons he learned there included “the need to embrace change, to always try your best, and that you are never too old to learn new things. At Montecasino, Gareth’s primary role is to develop a cohesive marketing strategy that provides strategic direction for Montecasino and the collective precinct. The strengths he brings to this new job include his extensive experience in marketing and promotions from a wide range of casinos, as well as his creative skills and boundless enthusiasm. The best things about his job at Montecasino, Gareth says, are “my team and fellow colleagues – who are super focused on working toward a common goal. It obviously also helps that we come to work at this award-winning Tuscan themed marvel, which is the finest casino in South Africa. In the ever-changing entertainment environment and with visitors’ expectations for constant fresh new excitement at Montecasino, Gareth acknowledges that “remaining relevant and appealing is a challenge, but not one that he finds daunting. His appreciation for Montecasino is authentic. “On a personal level I appreciate the entire Montecasino environment. It’s not only a great place to come to work every day, bearing in mind the aesthetics and location, but most importantly, it is surrounded and filled with great people who contribute to this incredible culture here at Montecasino – and I’ve learned that this culture is actually an inherent part of the Tsogo Sun DNA. Reflecting on his career, Gareth says he regards his greatest career achievement as being part of the nurturing and building up of the various teams he has managed and worked with over the years. “While I’d like to think that I contributed, albeit in a small way, to each person I’ve worked with over the years, they too have contributed in their own way to my life and allowed me to grow and achieve and learn over the years. That’s significant. Gareth’s advice to a young person starting out in a career in marketing is, “Take everything in, open your mind to all ideas and possibilities. Be prepared to put time and effort into your work. Not every idea is going to work, but that is how you will learn. Don’t be scared to try new things and most importantly, enjoy the ride. While he’s not big on role models, Gareth does admire Elon Musk for proving that anything is possible with a little determination and focus. Gareth is currently reading Simplicity by Edward de Bono. His life beyond the work place is with his “beautiful, talented wife, who teaches ballet, and three healthy children – two sons and a daughter – who thankfully all love being outdoors and respect and connect well with nature. I spend as much time as humanly possible with my family – they mean the world to me. He loves any outdoor activities, including motocross, and says, “the more extreme the activity the better, and if it involves speed and a bit of dirt, better still!

Sun City Wins Two Prestigious World Travel Awards Sun International’s iconic Sun City resort in the North West Province has received two awards in the annual World Travel Awards™ programme which is renowned as the most prestigious and comprehensive in the global industry. THE RESORT scooped the awards for Africa’s Leading Resort and Africa’s Leading Casino Resort for 2019, trumping top destinations from across the African continent in these categories. The World Travel Awards™ was established in 1993 to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all key sectors of the travel tourism & hospitality industry. Today, the World Travel Awards™ brand is recognised globally as the ultimate hallmark of quality, with winners setting the benchmark to which all others aspire. The annual awards programme covers the globe with a series of regional gala ceremonies staged to recognise and celebrate individual and collective successes within each geographical region. The winners of World Travel Awards Africa and Indian Ocean 2019 were revealed in Mauritius earlier this month. These gala ceremonies are regarded as milestone events in the industry

calendar, attended by the industry’s key decision makers, chief figure heads and the key trade and consumer media. Commenting on the awards, Sun City’s Marketing Manager, Thapelo Modise, said: “We are honoured that Sun City has claimed awards in two categories in the regional World Travel Awards™ programme. To still be recognised as amongst the best on the continent after 40 years is a source of tremendous pride. “These awards show that we are indeed suc-

ceeding in creating the types of experiences that live long in the memories and hearts of our guests. It is, after all, the guest experience which is the key differentiator. We will continue to focus on ensuring that our guests’ experiences are always exceptional.” It has been 40 years since Sun International’s legendary Sun City opened its doors, marking the start of a new era in leisure and entertainment for South Africa. Emerging from the dry African bush in what was then known as Bophuthatswana, the resort, launched by hotel magnate Sol Kerzner, instantly captured the hearts and imaginations of entertainment-hungry South Africans. For the first time, they could enjoy concerts by international bands and artists, leisure activities and the thrill of glamour gambling at one encompassing destination. Over time, Sun City has evolved into one of the most exciting and all-encompassing entertainment and leisure destinations in the country.

Sun International heeds the call to Rise Against Hunger Sun International joins hands with Rise Against Hunger to alleviate the plight of hungry children in underprivileged communities across South Africa to mark International Mandela Day on 18 July 2019. Teams of volunteers wil roll up their sleeves to pack food parcels at eight Sun International units, with the goal to pack 418 000 meals to feed over 59 000 preschool children for a year. THIS IS the fourth consecutive year that Sun International has supported this worthy cause. In the past three years, Sun International has helped pack over 5-million meals at its properties with the help of volunteers from local businesses. This year, employees of Sun International and other corporates will once again work in packing lines at the eight participating Sun International units. The participating units include Time Square in Pretoria; GrandWest in Cape Town; Carnival City in Brakpan; The Boardwalk in Port Elizabeth; Sibaya in Durban; Meropa in Polokwane; the Wild Coast Sun in the Eastern Cape and Windmill in Bloemfontein. Employees from Golden Valley in Worcester and The Table Bay in Cape Town will join the packing lines at GrandWest. Volunteers will pack enough meals to feed about 59 000 preschool children three times a week for the school year. The meals are highly nutritious and comprise of rice, soya, dehydrated vegetable mix and a fortification pack of 23 essential minerals and vitamins specifically formulated to combat malnutrition (complying with the UNICEF standard). The theme for this year’s meal packing drive is “This is Possible”. Rise Against Hunger International recently launched a campaign to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with a special focus on its second goal which is “Zero Hunger by the year 2030”. In South Africa millions of children go hungry every

day, with hunger killing more people annually than HIV/Aids, Tuberculosis and malaria combined. In 2017, 6,8 million South Africans experienced hunger (Statistics SA: http://www.statssa.gov.za/?p=12135). “Each year, on the 18th of July, we celebrate the birthday of a true South African icon, and everything that he stood for by embracing his values and doing something to help make a change for good in the lives of those less fortunate. This is the fourth year that Sun International will be part of this spirited food packing initiative with Rise Against Hunger. “We call on representatives from local businesses, government representatives and other likeminded stakeholders to join us for 67 minutes on Mandela Day when we will join hands to pack food parcels for the most vulnerable in our society, needy young children. School feeding programmes can help prevent hunger, increase school enrollment, reduce absenteeism and improve learning outcomes “Mandela Day is dedicated to Nelson Mandela’s, life and work and aims to inspire people to embrace the values that he shared so that all of us can help change the world for the better. We feel privileged to be part of this meaningful Mandela Day initiative which has tremendous and far reaching impact across underprivileged communities,” says Sun International’s Group Social Economic Development Specialist, Heidi Edson.

Nigerian Government Fury as Illegal Operators Siphon Off a Trillion Naira Annually Vows to Stamp out Illegals The Nigerian Federal Government has started moves aimed at putting an end to the activities of illegal lottery operators, which leave losses amounting to more than one tril ion Naira annually. To this end, the federal government through the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) is to police unauthorized online games.

SAVE THE DATE

NATIONAL LOTTERY Regulatory Commission is also considering on one hand to enlist the help of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to monitor the payment settlement services to unauthorized lottery operations; and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on another to ban illegal lottery and gambling activities on GSM networks. It will be recalled that Mr Bello Maigari, acting executive secretary, National Lottery Trust Fund (NLTF) has last week raised alarm over the activities of illegal lottery operators. Maigari, said that there were many lottery operators in the country without a licence, adding that this has resulted to leakages in terms of what they were supposed to remit to the trust fund. “Nigerian government is losing more than one trillion Naira every year because of illegal operators. There are a lot of illegal operators in the industry and these are part of the reasons why there are leakages. Some are conducting this business without being regulated and there are chances that such proceeds will be channelled towards crime, fraud and money laundering,” he said.
