Lifelong Tulsan Chris Lieberman knows a great idea when he sees one and isn’t afraid to take the steps to make it happen on his terms. After running marathons in Dallas and Oklahoma City in the early 2000s, Chris observed the incredible impact the events were having on their cities. Not only were the races bringing a huge economic boost to the host cities, they were also contributing to local charities and promoting health and fitness to improve the quality of life of local residents. “I wanted that for my city,” Lieberman said. “At the time, we had the small Oklahoma Marathon, which did two loops on the Riverside Trail. As a born and bred Tulsan, I thought, we can do better than this and promote our city in a totally new way.” The inspiration to put Tulsa on the figurative marathon map was born. Chris gathered some of his running friends — Jack Wing, former race director of the Tulsa Run, Tim and Lori Dreiling, owners

4

of Fleet Feet Tulsa, and Trani Matthews, owner of Tulsa Runner — and formed a non-profit organization in 2004 that began planning about a year and a half before the first race. “This is going to be big,” Lieberman thought. He had no idea just how big the event would become. The inaugural Route 66 Marathon was held in 2006; the race takes its name from the famous and storied American highway that runs directly through Tulsa. Cyrus Avery, the “Father of Route 66,” believed that the road could become more than simply a means of transportation; the road itself could be the destination! In the same way, the Williams Route 66 Marathon strives to be more than just a race or box to check off your bucket list; it seeks to promote Tulsa’s unique qualities and encourage runners from outside the Oklahoma area so they can discover all the city has to offer. Lieberman and Assistant Executive Director Kim Hann have certainly been successful in spreading the race’s influence far outside the city and state boundaries, and the race has grown at

an incredible pace. Three thousand runners and walkers participated in the inaugural event, while 15,800 participants from every state and 10 countries will line up at the starting line at the race’s tenth anniversary event. In fact, nearly 40% of the event’s participants each year come from outside the state, a huge testament to the race’s draw within the running community and Lieberman’s success in marketing the race as a destination. Four-time participant Danielle Cemprola, from South Carolina, remarked, “The first time I ran Route 66, I was in pursuit of my goal of running a marathon in all 50 states. I didn’t think Tulsa would be very exciting, but a lot of my friends were going, so I thought it might be fun. Boy, was I wrong! The city is beautiful and the course offers a wonderful tour of all of the different neighborhoods and sites. The community is so warm and inviting and they do a great job of cheering on the participants. Of course, the medals and race amenities are top-notch! I never thought this race would be one I would do again, but now it is the only must-do race on my calendar each year. No matter what, I know I’m coming back to run the Route 66 Marathon each November — it’s truly that much fun!”

In fact, fun is the secret ingredient that makes the Williams Route 66 Marathon such a recipe for success each year. The race committee is constantly looking for new entertainment, amenities, course changes, aid stations, and other opportunities to make the race unique and exciting. In fact, the Williams Route 66 Marathon course was broken in early by two famous runners who ran the course ahead of time, providing a great opportunity for a dress rehearsal: Dean Karnazes, author of Ultramarathon Man, ran the course in his quest to run 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days, as did Sam Thompson, a member of the Marathon Maniacs who ran 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims. An incredible fireworks display the night before the inaugural marathon was thanks to the Oklahoma Centennial Celebration and provided a fitting start to a race that would become vitally important to Tulsa’s economy, community, and spirit. Since the inaugural event, the Williams Route 66 Marathon has seized on many unique opportunities to bring new flavor and excitement to the race, including witnessing two Guinness Book of World Records attempts! The 2009 Stroller Derby pitted two elite marathoners, Michael Wardian and Zac Freudenburg, against each other to see who could run

5

the fastest marathon while pushing their child in a stroller. After getting medical releases from the children’s pediatricians and getting the strollers checked out by Lee’s Bicycles, Wardian and Freudenburg were off! Freudenburg ended up winning the marathon overall in a time of 2:32:10, setting a Guinness World Record in the process! Oklahoma Native Camille Herron brought some extra excitement to the course when she set the Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon run by a woman in costume while dressed up in a full Spider-Woman outfit in a time of 2:48:51 in 2012. And although there is no official Guinness World Record for unofficial beer stops along a marathon course, if there was, the Route 66 Marathon would be a top contender. One thing is for sure — you never know who will show up to race in Tulsa or what kind of crazy antics you’ll see out on the course! And speaking of crazy antics, you might notice that the course seems overrun with yellow, red, black, and red, white, and blue. The Williams Route 66 Marathon is proud to welcome members of the Marathon Maniacs, Half Fanatics, and 50 States Marathon Club to Tulsa, and the event really rolls out the red carpet for these groups! These frequent marathoners and half-marathoners travel from all over the country and the world to participate in this world-class marathon, which has become a “bucket list” race for many members of the clubs, and with a long list of perks, it is easy to see why.

6

Participants in the clubs receive access to exclusive VIP tents at both the start and finish lines, where club members have access to private gear check, food, drinks, and porta-johns. According to Assistant Executive Director Kim Hann, more members of the clubs are coming every year. “We have over 2,000 members of these three clubs already registered for 2015,” Hann says. “We go above and beyond to make this experience special for them because we appreciate how far many members are traveling to run our race, and we love their support! The Maniacs, Fanatics, and 50 Staters are part of what make this race so special.” Club members who register for the event by September 1st are also able to choose whether they would like to receive a special finisher’s medal featuring the colors of their club and may also receive a custom bib printed with their club’s colors. With all of the unique perks available to members of the Marathon Maniacs, Half Fanatics, and 50 States Marathon Club, don’t be surprised when Tulsa’s streets are awash with the club colors! No matter which year you participate in the Williams Route 66 Marathon, one thing is guaranteed: all finishers will receive a top-of-the-line medal. The Williams Route 66 Marathon finisher medals are critically acclaimed have been named among the Top 5 medals in the country by Marathon and Beyond

during multiple years, including taking home the top prize in 2011 for that year’s “Flying Goddess” finisher medal. The “Flying Goddess has been reborn for the 10th anniversary after past participants voted on their favorite medal from previous years. The 2015 version of the beloved medal will be bigger and feature a special spinner in the center in honor of the race’s 10th anniversary. Race participants actually have the opportunity to earn six pieces of that award-winning bling; a special volunteer medal is awarded to all volunteers to thank them for their service, and runners can participate in the Fun Run and 5K on Saturday to earn a medal for each of those events. On Sunday, participants can sign up for both the marathon relay and the marathon and start the marathon relay as the first runner for their team, then pass the baton and go on to finish the marathon, earning a medal for both the marathon relay and the marathon! Participants who are looking for that final piece of shiny metal will find it when they take the Center of the Universe detour, which adds an extra 0.3 miles to the marathon course and awards participants with a

commemorative coin for completing the “World’s Shortest Ultra Marathon.” Regardless of how many events you choose to complete, you won’t be walking away empty-handed! The Williams Route 66 Marathon is an event unlike any other. The races transform Tulsa in November, turning this underrated charmer of a city into a bonafide tourist destination. Whether they come the first time for the medals, the perks, the course, or the comradery, participants keep coming back year after year. Here’s to 10 more years of Oklahoma’s biggest party! We can’t wait to see what they come up with next.

WILLIAMS ROUTE 66 MARATHON LEGACY RUNNERS When the Williams Route 66 Marathon was just slightly more than a twinkle in the eye of Executive Director Chris Lieberman, he opened up registration with a promise: the first 250 registrants would be assigned their number for life. Ten years later, Elite 250 members Brian Gebheart and Patty Powell have run every marathon since that inaugural event, and they plan to keep at it, lifetime numbers and all. Ten other marathon legacy runners have also completed the race each year and all vow to continue their streaks for as long as possible. Stephen Abernathy, who has also run all of the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathons, says “My favorite part is seeing different parts of the Tulsa metro each race. The crowd support and entertainment is amazing as well. I would be remiss if I didn’t say I enjoy the Center of the Universe Detour, which I have taken every year since its inception and the beer stops all along the course!” Patty Powell celebrated her 50th marathon at the 2013 race and plans to make the 10th anniversary of the Williams Route 66 Marathon her 100th marathon. A local run leader, Patty Powell, loves the comradery along the course and says, “The race has grown and improved so much over the last 10 years. The medals and shirts get better every year, the finishers’ food and area is fantastic, and the expo is one of the

8

best! I plan to continue running every year that I am able.” Williams Route 66 Marathon pace group leader Kathryn White has also run the marathon every year while helping train other participants through Fleet Feet Tulsa’s training programs. A special part of the event for her is seeing her friends and trainees along the course, but she also appreciates the changes in the race over time. “Every year, the organizers have listened to participants to make improvements to the race. The course adjustment has lessened the time on Riverside Drive and has also added some of the more scenic locations in Tulsa; Philbrook, University of Tulsa, and Guthrie Green. While impressive from the start, the medals have become more ornate with specific ribbons for special groups who attend (Marathon/Half Marathon Maniacs and 50 States Club). Plus, there is enough beer for everyone!” It looks like these legacy runners show no signs of stopping, and we can’t say we blame them. MARATHON RELAY INFORMATION The Williams Route 66 Marathon Relay is a five-leg relay event. The Marathon Relay will follow the same course as the Marathon. One runner can run more than one consecutive leg of the relay. However, each relay team must have between three and five participants. Mixed teams must have at least two female participants. All members of a team must be 40 or older for the Masters division.

RELAY EXCHANGE ZONES The Relay exchange zones will be clearly delineated with cones and fencing. As runners approach the relay exchange zones, relay runners will be directed to the right side of the course and Marathon and Half-Marathon runners will be directed to keep left.

RELAY TEAM MEMBERS MUST KEEP THE EXCHANGE ZONES AND THE MARATHON COURSE CLEAR. IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO CROSS THE COURSE TO GET TO EXCHANGE ZONES 1 AND 3. RELAY PARTICIPANTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR GETTING ACROSS THE STREET SAFELY AND FOR CROSSING THE COURSE WITHOUT INTERFERING WITH ANY

MARATHON RELAY EXCHANGE ZONES – WHILE YOU’RE THERE Be aware of the conditions and dress appropriately for the wait. There will not be much in the way of shelter at the exchange zones. Water and portable restrooms will be available near each exchange zone. It would be a good idea to have a clothing bag for each exchange zone, so that the runner just finishing will have some warm, dry clothes when he/she is done running. The runner starting out on the new leg can leave his/her clothes in the bag for the teammate to take back to the start. However you work out the logistics, you are responsible for your own gear! Don’t leave it on the bus and don’t expect the volunteers to be able to take care of it for you.

RACE-DAY CANCELLATION, RACE ALTERATION POLICY AND WEATHER POLICY It is the primary goal of the Williams Route 66 Marathon to provide and ensure a safe event for participants, volunteers and community attendees alike. We will be diligent in not exposing the participants, the volunteers or the community at large to any undue risk in the production and/ or execution of the event. We understand the commitment the participants have made in entering the race, however, the decisions regarding race cancellations and/ or alterations will be based on the larger community safety as well as the participants. Moreover, if community resources are threatened, we will act to protect them from unnecessary stress. When weather conditions or other physical conditions present a danger to the participants as a whole, the Williams Route 66 Marathon officials maintain the right to cancel the race. Less threatening conditions could cause alteration of the race and/or the race course or length of the race to further ensure participant, volunteer and community safety. The conditions fall under an “Act of God” — and will not result in refunding of any race entry fee or future race credits. The staging of an event of this magnitude places large financial burden on the Williams Route 66 Marathon organization prior to the event date. Thus, in the event of a forced race cancellation or alteration, it is probable that the financial impact on the race would not be any different than if the race was held without compromise.

46

The Williams Route 66 Marathon officials, along with City of Tulsa officials, will make decisions regarding the cancellation or alteration of the race. Prior to the race, the Williams Route 66 Marathon officials will apprise the participants of the weather conditions and how the on-course flag system designation works. Williams Route 66 Marathon officials will describe any changes that may be decided as a result of weather or other unsafe conditions. In the case of a course evacuation, Williams Route 66 Marathon officials and Tulsa Police and other City of Tulsa officials will communicate throughout the race course to direct participants to safe shelters to await transportation back to the start and/or finish area.

WEATHER In regard to weather specifically, the Williams Route 66 Marathon has adopted the WBGT (Wet-Bulb Globe Temperature) index as its standard. High heat and humidity, as measured in accordance with the American College of Sports Medicine recommendations for participation in endurance events, could result in cancellation of the event. WBGT is considered “the most practical heat stress index characterizing the effect of a heat stress environment on the individual.” WBGT was developed because the drybulb temperature alone does not provide a realistic guide to the effects of heat, inasmuch as it does not take humidity and heat radiation into consideration. WBGT

is so-called because two of its input variables are wet-bulb temperature and a “black-globe” temperature; the third variable is the shielded dry-bulb temperature. The result of the WBGT will be indicated on a flag system that will be displayed at the start and finish area as well as at the medical stations along the race course. The flag color will indicate the safety conditions based on the WBGT readings. They are listed in the table below. At the starting line there will be a banner over the street. Suspended from that banner will be two flags, each 2'x3'. The flag color will reflect the heat stress at that moment. Medical aid tents will be stationed along the course. Each medical aid station will be flying a flag of a color corresponding to the heat stress at that time. The flag colors will change within 15 minutes of a change in the heat stress level. The staff at the aid station will know the meaning of each color flag.

The Williams Route 66 Marathon asserts that each participant assumes responsibility when entering an event with the potential risks that a marathon presents. All runners should be discerning of their own fitness level in their decision to enter the Marathon and associated events. Furthermore, it strongly advises all participants to cooperate with directives given by Williams Route 66 Marathon officials and to assist in ensuring the safety of their fellow participants, particularly when conditions are less than ideal. As the WBGT lowers in cold weather and EAS alerts go to yellow and/or red, it is strongly recommended that all runners slow their pace and reduce their risk of hypothermia when conditions warrant.

Extreme conditions that are high risk already place a burden on community health care systems, including emergency medical transportation, as well as hospital emergency room capacity. Williams Route 66 Marathon officials will not knowingly place the community in any such position that will place burden on overall community safety.
