RADICAL DESIGN FOR ENERGY-POSITIVE CITY GETS GREEN LIGHT IN NORWAY

An entire smart city built on sustainable principles will form the basis of the Oslo Airport City, designed by Norwegian practices Haptic Architects and Nordic – Office of Architecture. Located next to the Oslo airport, the 4 million-m2 city will be powered by renewable energy, served by electric vehicles and take 30 years to build. The new city hopes to be the first energy positive airport city with the capacity to sell surplus energy. It will also be able to provide crucial on-site provision such as the de-icing of aeroplanes. Backed by the Norwegian government’s green shift from an oil-based economy to one powered by renewable energy, Oslo Airport City

will embrace low carbon features and green technologies. Oslo Airport City has received outline planning consent and some of the areas have detailed consents in place. Construction of the first stage is expected to start as soon as next year. Buro Happold Engineering have been appointed the project’s engineering consultant. www.hapticarchitects.com ; www.nordicarch.com

AEDAS ADDS LUXURY TOUCH TO VIETNAM’S MOST SOUGHT AFTER SEASIDE ADDRESS

BENOY’S WAREHOUSE REVAMP SET TO REVITALISE NANJING’S WATERFRONT

The Alacarte Halong Bay Condotel Development in Vietnam is a design by Aedas that blends the modern and traditional to present unique elements of Vietnamese culture in a contemporary context. Due for completion in 2020, the façade design of this 25-storey tower was inspired by the undulating flow of waves in the sea. Beneath the tower sits a four-storey podium, offering hotel rooms, serviced apartments, restaurants, ballrooms, meeting rooms, gyms and pools, spa facilities and retail outlets. While most rooms enjoy breathtaking sea views, the infinity pool, sky bars and restaurants on the rooftop also overlook Halong Bay. The site enjoys good accessibility with road connections on three sides. To enhance pedestrian connectivity and create a focal point along the promenade, the ground level is designated for retail. Its strategic location ensures high visibility from the city and the bay. www.aedas.com

Benoy will start work later this year on a project to develop a new mixed-use destination on the banks of the Yangtze River in Nanjing.Working with developer MCC Real Estate Group, Benoy will regenerate a historic ice storage warehouse as part of a wider masterplan for an area centred on the Yangtze River Bridge. Situated on the riverfront in Nanjing, the former warehouse from 1915 will evoke the memory of the area’s industrial heritage through a new mixed-use, retail and cultural experience for the community.“We are incredibly excited to be working on this significant industrial regeneration project which will become one of the largest commercial developments in the area once completed,” says Qin Pang, a Benoy director. Benoy’s design inserts modern blocks that will form a cultural plaza at the heart of the site.A refined architectural expression on the outer street side elevations is offset with more playful modern cubes. www.benoy.com

Port House in Antwerp named ‘Best Refurbished Building’

GAMMON CLAIMS US$191-M CONTRACT FOR LYRIC THEATRE WORKS AT WEST KOWLOON

Port House in Antwerp has been named ‘Best Refurbished Building’ at the MIPIM Awards 2018. Established in 1991, the MIPIM Awards recognise some of the most outstanding and accomplished projects across the globe. Port House in Antwerp repurposes, renovates and extends a derelict fire station into a new headquarters, connecting the city with the vital activities of its port. With 12km of docks handling 26% of Europe’s container shipping, Antwerp is the continent’s second largest port with ambitious targets for future expansion to meet the Europe’s growth over the next century.

Gammon Construction has been awarded a HK$1.5-billion contract by the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority to deliver the extended basement and public infrastructure works for the L1 Contract for Lyric Theatre Complex and Extended Basement at Hong Kong’s new cultural precinct. The L1 Contract for Lyric Theatre Complex and Extended Basement involves excavation and lateral support followed by construction of a twolevel reinforced concrete structure, as well as public infrastructure works including drainage, a traffic lay-by and associated temporary works. The contract is Gammon’s third from the authority. Gammon is carrying out foundation works for the theatre. “We are pleased to be working again with the authority for the further development of the Lyric Theatre Project,” says Gammon Chief Executive Thomas Ho. “We have demonstrated our ability to offer tailor-made solutions while working to the highest standards of safety throughout the foundations contract, and we look forward to continuing to provide the highest levels of service.” Work on the project is due to commence soon and is expected to be complete by mid-2020. A workforce of 450 will be engaged at the peak construction period. www.gammonconstruction.com

Working with heritage consultants Origin, ZHA’s historic analysis of the fire station revealed its unrealised tower. Port House is a composition of a new volume that ‘floats’ above the old building, respecting each of the existing facades and completing the verticality of the original design’s unbuilt central tower. The new extension points towards the city, connecting Antwerp with the port on which it was founded. Surrounded by water, the new extension’s façade is a glazed surface that ripples like waves and reflects the changing tones and colours of the city’s sky. This perception of a transparent volume, cut to give the new building its sparkling appearance, reinterprets Antwerp’s moniker as the city of diamonds. www.zaha-hadid.com

HASSELL CRAFTS A ‘WELL-BEING-LED’ FUTURE WITHIN SHENZHEN’S QIANHAI

RENSON’S SKYE ECLIPSE SLIDING BLADE ROOF CREATES A COMFORTABLE OUTDOORS

Hassell’s concept for the Mawan Mile urban design project is for a vibrant gathering place that combines parklands, cultural buildings and a winding sky deck into a “well-being-led destination”. Hassell is the design partner for the development of this critical zone in the Qianhai business district. The scheme is a mixed-use precinct designed to draw people in – particularly younger, mobile residents – and improve health and social connections. The masterplan consists of four layers that form a defined public place with above and below ground zones, a continuous park, a series of pavilion buildings and a 1.6km-long sky deck to connect the precinct to the surrounding buildings and street network. The deck provides an uninterrupted cycling and jogging path that promotes exercise and well-being, which was a project goal.At the southern end of the development is a new cultural district comprising three pavilion buildings called M3 Place. Hassell will undertake the design of the buildings; the client’s headquarters, a public exhibition hall and multi-use cultural centre. www.hassellstudio.com

Comfortable outdoor living in style is the promise of Renson’s Skye terrace coverings. The roof structure’s tilting and sliding blades are set in double recessed-mounted modules that can span up to 11.75 m by 4.5 m and that integrate into any structure. The Skye is more than just a terrace cover; it integrates seamlessly into architecture and offers a wide range of possibilities for architects, designers and planners who see a terrace as an additional outdoor space that should serve all year round. This model now comes with tilting roof blades that can slide open and close. In addition to freestanding and lean-to constructions, the Skye now offers a new application as an integrated roof element, minus supporting columns. The Skye’s tilting blades protect from both sun and rain. An app controls the positioning of the blades, offering the option to programme various scenarios and to access to a perfect experience for each time of day. www.renson-outdoor.com

TWIN MALLS BY HONG KONG’S DLN BOOST SOCIAL SCENE IN SHANGHAI, HANGZHOU

DLN architects have completed two malls that bring the social experience back to shopping. The DLN-designed project Longfor Paradise Walk in Binjiang Hangzhou adds 240,000 m2 of multi-function space to an area adjacent to government offices. The complex has rail transit and efficient use of space built in, with a dual subway configuration providing seamless connectivity. The design concept takes inspiration from the Qiantang River, its tides, waves and ripples. The programme demonstrates fluency in point, line, surface and colour, and opens up five floors of four different themes, including almost 10,000 m2 of floor space for children and their parents. Sometimes referred to as the “Silicon Valley of Hangzhou”, Binjiang is an important high-tech zone with a population of more than 300,000 commuters and residents.

The second project designed by DLN is the Xuhui ASE Mall in Shanghai. Located in the Xujiahui shopping and tourist area, and connected to the Caobao Road Metro stop, the 130,000 m2 of floor space includes apparel, specialty restaurants, entertainment, and sport and lifestyle stores. The design enhances the flow of people into a commercial space. The project building is divided into two organic units, with terraces for food and beverage venues. The atrium is replaced by the walking street and piazza between units. The entire site is covered by a canopy, enabling the building to become a gathering spot. www.dln.com.hk

ATKINS-DESIGNED IHG HUALUXE HOTEL SOAKS UP THE VIEWS IN XIAMEN

WOODS BAGOT-DESIGNED TOWER OPEN FOR BUSINESS IN SUNNY SANYA

The Atkins-designed IHG Hualuxe Hotel of the Ocean Empire has opened in the seaside city of Xiamen. Developer Ronshine China has also tasked Atkins with completing a masterplan that includes seven residential towers. From its prominent waterside location, the hotel emulates the city’s symbol of the egret. The two towers suggest the outstretched wings of the bird and the fins on the façade reflect the quills of its feathers. This metaphor is extended into the landscape design.

A soaring new addition to Sanya Bay’s skyline, the Sunshine Insurance Finance Plaza is a mixed-use development featuring a 35-storey tower rising above a tiered retail podium and gardens. The Woods Bagot-designed project on the southern tip of Hainan Island houses A-grade offices for the insurance firm, a 4-star Park Hyatt Hotel, private clubhouse and rooftop pool. The development has a total GFA of 105,000 m2. “We were honoured to design this new headquarters for China’s preeminent insurance company,” says Patrick Daly, Woods Bagot’s lead architect. “Our goal was to design a complex that seamlessly transitions between a variety of uses, moderates the tropical climate.” Standing at 156 m, a central, curved pillar serves multiple demographics. The concave portion includes the entryway to the offices, while the convex beckons hotel visitors and employees. Inside the offices, employees enjoy interior “pocket” atriums at the sides of the tower provide meeting places for companies. www.woodsbagot.com

The project includes the 57,000 m2 of hotel and another 34,000 m2 for office space. Within the hotel tower are 351 bedrooms above a podium that houses a 1,500-m2 ballroom and two restaurants. A sky bar cantilevers out from the curve of the tower at the top of the building. “We feel privileged to have played our part in providing a new landmark for Xiamen and thank Mr Ou Zonghong, chairman of Ronshine China, for his original vision and his team’s dedication,” says Ian Milne, senior design director at Atkins. www.atkinsglobal.com

SCHMIDT HAMMER LASSEN ARCHITECTS TO REDEVELOP RIGA’S HISTORIC HEART

ATELIER BRÜCKNER PAYS HOMAGE TO HORCH WITH NEW AUDI MUSEUM EXTENSION

The abandoned buildings of Riga’s historic Kimmel Quarter will be transformed into a thriving commercial development under the direction of Danish architectural firm Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects. The Latvian city’s Kimmel Quarter is the former home of Brewery Kimmel, a 19th century industrial complex that is rich with history. The project called for a design to transform the 11,500-m2 city block into a vibrant destination that includes an office building and hotel. Public facilities on the ground floor include a public gym, childcare centre, cafe, spa, food court and convenience store. By creating beautiful, inviting courtyards and plazas that connect old and new, the overall design will create a strong urban expression with a timeless appearance. “The resulting architecture is distinctly modern but in a rewarding dialogue with the old restored buildings. We have designed a new Kimmel Quarter in which history and the future are bound by timeless architecture,” says Rasmus Kierkegaard, associate partner at Schmidt Hammer Lassen. www.shl.dk

Germany’s August Horch Museum presents more than 100 years of Audi automobile history in a newly expanded interactive space. A recently opened extension designed by Atelier Brückner more than doubles the previous floor area. Atelier Brückner’s design adds 5,000 m2 to a building that interprets the theme of a car’s gleaming metal surface, like an automobile on show, parked between the former production halls of car brands Audi and Trabant. Respectfully interposed in the historic ensemble, it takes the eave height of the existing five buildings, between 4.5m and 7.5m high, built between 1912 and 1924. The heritage-protected factory halls where August Horch produced the first Audi models enclose the museum extension and are simultaneously its biggest exhibit. An award of the Zwickau ArchitekturForum was bestowed on the project. “The jury reached agreement very quickly in this case,” says Rainer HerttingThomasius, former dean of the faculty of architecture at the Westsächsische Hochschule Zwickau. The award recognises the “sensitive approach” of the architects. www.atelier-brueckner.com

Located in Qingdao of China’s Shandong province, Xifeng Bridge was conceived by PT Architecture Design (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd, with its overall design reflecting the image of a phoenix ready to take off. Wanda Group is the project’s developer and PT Landscape was responsible for its landscape design. In Chinese mythology, the phoenix is an auspicious bird and a symbol of peace. As the bone oracle scripts of “phoenix” and “wind” are identical, the bird is believed to be omnipresent and commands the spiritual power of this natural element. Furthermore, the phoenix is pronounced as “fenghuang” in Chinese, part of which sounds like “emperor” (huang). Not surprisingly, it is also associated with imperial power and often mentioned in the same breath as another mythical creature, the dragon, to connote luck and harmony. Xifeng Bridge combines the use of red and wood colours. Red symbolizes passion, vitality, willpower, fire and strength, besides being an auspicious colour featured in traditional Chinese festivals and celebrations. In contrast, wood stands for steadfastness and warmth, imparting a “back to the basics” impression. The phoenix’s polyline form combines the red colour and wooden texture to create a spatial ambience that could be described as simple, clean, cozy and trendy. The bridge is paved with granite material in dark and light grey tones that give it a streamlined and contemporary look. Combined with its dynamic lines, the infrastructure exudes vibrance and warmth that echo with its polyline form, to provide Information and images: PT Landscape

a modern waterfront promenade for a relaxing stroll. Various irregular-shaped plant beds are featured, alongside benches for seating, with greenery that line both sides of the steps to give them a softer touch. The bridge-pier design is inspired by the traditional Chinese motif of “auspicious clouds”, which implies symbiosis, harmony and inclusiveness. Since antiquity, mythological creatures have been depicted with their feet planted on auspicious clouds. When combined, mythical animals and auspicious clouds are thought to bring remarkable luck and thriving developments. Dating back millennia, auspicious clouds have evolved into a symbol representative of Chinese culture. The “auspicious cloud” design first appeared in the Chu region during the late Zhou dynasty. Since then, the design pattern of cloud forms, particularly that of their integration with animal motifs, gradually evolved into a mainstream design theme in the Chu region. Reaching a pinnacle in the Chin and Han dynasties, this aesthetic trend gripped the whole country at that time. Magical and magnificent, the cloud design offers much room for imagination. Clouds were considered by the ancient Chinese as not only a divine creation, but also the precursor of fortune and status elevation. Distinguished by a streamlined design, the bridge pier was created to resemble the auspicious cloud under a phoenix’s claws. The structure is made of the same material as the ceramic mosaic art of Antoni Gaudi’s creation, which not only enriches the space below the bridge but also complements the coastline.
