About Jackie Joyner-Kersee As one of the most decorated female athletes of all time, Jackie dominated the track and field circuit for 16 years and won three gold, one silver and two bronze medals spanning four Olympic Games. Sports Illustrated for Women named Jackie the Greatest Female Athlete of the 20th Century. She was also named the top American Athlete five times and was inducted into the U.S. Track and Field Hall of Fame. Jackie helped to build the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Youth Center Foundation in her hometown of East St. Louis, Ill., that has raised more than $12 million. Jackie has recently embarked upon a nationwide effort to enhance the comprehensive health of our nation’s communities through the promotion of healthy lifestyles. She has been asked by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to promote My Plate, the replacement for the food pyramid. She has also joined forces with the Farm Foundation to address the availability of healthy foods in challenged communities throughout the U.S.

The Rockhurst University St. Louis Leadership Series luncheon will also announce the 2018 recipients of the Magis Award and Faber Young Alumni Award. MAGIS AWARD Inspired by a group of Rockhurst alumni from St. Louis, the Magis Award is given to a member of the Rockhurst community who lives in or is from the St. Louis area and epitomizes the Jesuit value of magis. Magis, “More,” – Striving to better understand ourselves and others as people loved by God; to seek greater knowledge of the academic, spiritual and social disciplines; to give greater love, care and compassion for our neighbor; to find more purposeful and effective ways to carry out our work. Rockhurst University is thrilled to honor Scott and Kathleen Hummel, ’86, with the 2018 Magis Award. Scott and Kathleen met at Rockhurst University and together developed a passion for helping atrisk children and families. In 1993, they founded Our Little Haven in response to the need for an early intervention, community-based model for assisting the youngest victims of abuse, neglect, drug exposure and HIV/AIDS. Our Little Haven has assisted nearly 20,000 children and families in its 25 years, and Scott and Kathleen have more than 60 years of combined experience serving the St. Louis community with their skills and compassion. FABER YOUNG ALUMNI AWARD The Faber Young Alumni award will be presented to Samantha Whited Fechter, ’09, because of her leadership capacity, commitment to the service of others and commitment to Rockhurst University and its mission. Samantha is the president of the St. Louis Alumni Council as well as a member of our Rockhurst University St. Louis Leaders Council. ABOUT ROCKHURST UNIVERSITY ST.
