HEAR FROM A STUDENT LEARNING CENTER

hawk

JACK HENRY ALSBACH, ’19, is a secondary education and mathematics double major who works as a supplemental instruction leader and tutor in math. WHAT DO YOU FIND VALUABLE ABOUT THE LEARNING CENTER? The Learning Center is a place that a lot of students can come to get the help that they need in a variety of situations. Sometimes hearing things from your peers is just more helpful to learning than it is to hear it from your professor. WHAT IMPACT DID USING THE LEARNING CENTER HAVE ON YOU? By choosing to work at the learning center and getting help from other tutors, not only did it boost my GPA, which helped me get a job, but it also bettered my understanding of the different classes I took; overall made me a better student; and ultimately made me more prepared to teach, which is going to be my job. It made me a more well-rounded student, which is what Jesuit education is all about. I think it really helped me in a lot of ways to not only prepare for teaching and my education degree, and help me get better at the math that I was tutoring, but also worked the other way around and helped me get the help that I needed in other classes as well. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO STUDENTS THAT MIGHT BE RELUCTANT TO COME TO THE LEARNING CENTER? I was one of the people in that boat before I became a tutor; I was very hesitant to get help from the learning center. I was too proud and thought I could do this on my own. But once I actually started sitting in the learning center and became a tutor, it was clear how much help I could have been getting all along. Once I was in there I could actually start getting that help from other tutors… help on things like basic comma work on papers from people who know way more about that than I do. Even though I was one of those people who was a little bit proud and didn’t necessarily want to come to the learning center for help, I could see how useful it was and how wrong I was initially to not come in and ask for help. It’s definitely worth your time. It’s foolish not to come in and get help from the Learning Center. It’s here specifically for us, the students of Rockhurst, so why not use it?

MAGGIE HUMMEL, ’20 is a civil engineering major who has participated in a service immersion trips to New York and the Dominican Republic. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO ON A SERVICE IMMERSION TRIP? The Rockhurst culture definitely played a part in my decision to go on a service immersion trip. Not because ‘everyone does it,’ but because I believed it would really enhance my Rockhurst experience! I think the mission and values of the Jesuits and the school really rub off onto its students - in the most challenging and inspirational ways. WHAT WAS THE BEST PART OF YOUR EXPERIENCE? Both trips I went on were mixes of people – different grades, majors and backgrounds. Some of the people I had never met, others I only knew of. After serving together for a week, we became a little family unit - seeing each other in our most joyful and vulnerable moments. Those are experiences and friendships that I will take with me for the rest of my life. HOW DID OUR EXPERIENCE HELP YOU GROW? I don’t think it’s possible to put into words the effect that these trips had on me. Campus Ministry calls it the $100,000 bet. It costs RU around that much to subsidize the mission trips. People say “why not just send that money directly to the organizations?” But Rockhurst is adamant that sending people will have a larger impact than money will ever go. The experiences and the work that students do on these trips can never have a price tag put on them and students will return as changed persons. Taking those experiences and the mindset of service, humility and selflessness will go far beyond college. Changing the hearts and minds of students as they continue school and start their careers will make a far more valuable impact on the world than $100,000 ever would. HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR SERVICE EXPERIENCE WILL HELP ENRICH YOUR FUTURE CAREER? I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. My trip to the DR made a huge impact on how I view my degree and career. I saw first-hand the impact infrastructure has on the quality of life of a community. I saw deteriorating roads and buildings - affecting transportation of food, healthcare and families. I plan to continue my work with engineering consulting; however, I really want to work with non-profits that aid in the design and improvement of third-world infrastructure. WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WAS CONSIDERING TAKING A SERVICE IMMERSION TRIP? It’s simple - just do it. The opportunity of a lifetime is right in front of you.

HEAR FROM A STUDY ABROAD

hawk

JANELLE DEMPSEY, ’20, is double majoring in Spanish and Secondary Education, with the aspiration of teaching English as a foreign language abroad. Janelle studied abroad in Carpi, Italy, in the summer of 2018. WHAT WAS YOUR STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM LIKE? I studied abroad through a program designed for education majors led by the University of Kansas and open to students from other universities, including Rockhurst. During the program, students live with host families and teach English in a local school, observing and learning about the similarities and differences between the American and Italian school systems. HOW DO YOU THINK STUDYING ABROAD HAS ENRICHED YOUR EDUCATION? Ultimately, the program provided me with experience, which to me is more valuable than information taught from a textbook within the walls of a classroom. I believe that finding a program that caters to your personal and professional goals has the opportunity to uniquely enrich your education, and at the same time, to make you a more competitive candidate in your field. HOW HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE IMPACTED YOU? Overall, I believe that this experience has made me more empathetic. It’s hard to imagine someone else’s reality until you have experienced it for yourself. By being fully immersed in Italian culture and their daily life, I was able to observe the differences between their lives and mine back home in the US. It made me more empathetic for people who immigrate to the United States. I can imagine the difficulties they have adjusting to a new country, culture and language because I got just a taste of what that feels like. WOULD YOU RECOMMEND STUDYING ABROAD TO OTHER STUDENTS? I believe there is so much to learn from the world beyond the United States. By only staying in your home country, you rob yourself of the opportunity to connect with a world beyond your comfort zone. You learn so much about yourself, your beliefs and values, your own culture and your perspective of the world, not to mention everything that you learn about the culture and country you travel to. WHAT WAS THE BEST PART OF YOUR STUDY ABROAD EXPERIENCE? The people that I met are by far the best part! I ventured into the unknown, only to discover my home away from home. For me, studying abroad wasn’t a one-time experience, it’s something that I get to keep building on as I continue to return to this place and invest in the relationships that I started building during my study abroad program.

The program I selected directly contributed to my studies of becoming a teacher, and even more specifically to the exact career I would like to have after graduating—teaching English abroad. It gave me the opportunity to gain more teaching experience, observe another school system and learn about another culture.
