e live in an age of data. Of analytics and algorithms. Of metrics and statistics. While data is critical to informing effective and

efficient care, we must always remember that behind all of that data are people. Moms in JFS’ domestic violence shelters, fleeing with their children for their lives. Children, hungry, gripping their parent’s hands at one of our JFS { SOVA Community Food & Resource centers. A grandfather, alone and frail, mourning his lost wife. A couple caring for their child with special needs, looking for a community that understands and cares. These are the people who come to Jewish Family Service. They are met by our dedicated staff, helped by our hundreds of committed volunteers, and supported by thousands of generous donors. Theirs are stories of struggle. Theirs are stories of joy. Theirs are stories of hope and triumph. Their stories are our stories. They are why we are here. Thank you to all of you who make this work possible.

From client to volunteer: a journey of compassion

JAY ABDO

O

nce a renowned actor in his home country of Syria, Jay Abdo was forced to flee to the United States after he would not endorse the Assad regime. “We lived on two dollars a day when we arrived in the U.S.,” he remembered. “We weren’t eating, and it was very hard.” A friend referred Jay and his wife to the JFS { SOVA Community Food & Resource Program. “The first day we walked in, the volunteers at JFS { SOVA brought out two bags full of groceries for us, and my wife looked at me and said, ‘We can’t take this food. This food is meant for those who need it the most. We can work, we can do something.’ And I said to her, ‘We don’t have food. We need this.’” Through the comprehensive services offered at JFS { SOVA, Jay and his wife were able to access the benefits and assistance that they needed to begin to gain their self-sufficiency. “When you walk through those doors, you are made to feel like family. The staff and volunteers at JFS { SOVA made me feel so welcome, that when I visited, I felt as though I were going home to get food.” Eight months later, Jay walked back into JFS { SOVA, but this time as a volunteer. “Helping someone you don’t know, no matter who they are or what their background is, is something that is good for the human heart and the human spirit.”

When you walk  through those doors,

you are made to feel like family. The staff and volunteers at JFS { SOVA made me feel so welcome, that when I visited, I felt as though I were going home to get food.

A lifeline for families fleeing violence

CINDY SHERMAN I’ve seen firsthand  how many lives we’ve enhanced and how many lives we’ve saved. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from.

A

fter retiring from her career as a school teacher, Cindy Sherman wanted to dedicate herself to volunteering. Cindy reached out to JFS { Hope, which provides domestic violence services throughout Los Angeles. She is based at one of JFS { Hope’s three shelters, where she speaks on the phone with victims reaching out for help and supports the shelter staff. “I help the social worker there in any way I can. They need to be counselors and a shoulder to cry on, they have to provide translation services to hospitals and law enforcement and the children’s schools, and they often have to help secure food and clothing, jobs and housing. I do anything I can to support that social worker, so that they can support the survivors and children who need her.” Cindy’s experience as a volunteer helped her find new perspective in her life. “I tried to put myself in their shoes. I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to have to leave your home, leave everything you know and everything you have, to give up your family and your friends and your community—all to find a bit of safety for yourself and for your children. But when I see families who, because of the services they receive at JFS { Hope, rebuild their lives and thrive—I know that it’s all been worth it.” Cindy is now a staunch advocate for volunteering. “I’ve seen firsthand how many lives we’ve enhanced and how many lives we’ve saved. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from. At JFS you’re family—and that means the world to me.”

The cantor of Valley Storefront

SIDNEY OCHS

A

t 97, Sidney Ochs is one of JFS’ most vibrant and recognizable members. He blurs the line between client and volunteer by taking part in programs and facilitating them. For 51 years, Sidney was the cantor at a synagogue in Manhattan. It remains his passion, which is why he leads the Kiddush every Friday at JFS’ Valley Storefront comprehensive service center. After moving to Los Angeles to be close to his daughter, Sidney was looking for community, and he immediately found it at JFS. But from the start, Stanley was a leader. “Right before I came to JFS for the first time, I received a sample ballot in the mail for the upcoming November election. I came to JFS and said, ‘Friends, I’m a new man here. There are eleven propositions in this book. Tell me about them!’ Nobody said anything, no one stirred. So I said, ‘Look, I’m going to come here half an hour earlier tomorrow, and if anyone is interested, we’re going to meet to discuss the ballot.’ That was my start. Now I lead two classes: one is called the Friendship Circle and the other is on current events. Besides that, I do something for every holiday—I even lead a Seder for Passover.”

I adore JFS. It is my home away from home. Being able to lead Shabbat services here is the greatest thing in the world. For me, it’s the nicest day of the week.

Sidney’s warmth and signature smile are now an indelible part of the culture at the Valley Storefront. “I come here every day,” he said. “You know what I do at home before I leave? I get dressed, I put my hand on the doorknob, and I look in the mirror and make a big smile, and then I walk out – every day. And I come here to JFS every day without fail. I adore JFS. It is my home away from home. Being able to lead Shabbat services here is the greatest thing in the world. For me, it’s the nicest day of the week.”

Finding strength and healing through community.

AARTI SEQUEIRA

W

hen Food Network star Aarti Sequeira gave birth to her daughter, it didn’t take long for her and her family to realize that something was off. “I thought that I had made a terrible mistake, and that I had just signed my death sentence,” she remembered. She thought she could get through it on her own, but more and more Aarti was feeling isolated. “I was clipping her nails, and I nipped her,” she said through tears. “She cried and I cried, and I thought, ‘This poor girl has a horrible wretch of a mother, and she’d be much better off with someone else.’” It was the moment that spurred Aarti to action. She thought she could get through it on her own, but more and more Aarti was feeling isolated. She googled “Postpartum Depression” and was connected to a warmline. “The first thing the woman on the phone said was, ‘There’s a great mom’s group called JFS { New Moms Connect that meets just down the street from you. It’s free and I think you would love it.’ When I walked in, there were women there of every color and background, and we were all going through this together.” Aarti’s life was transformed because she opened the door to JFS. “I walked through the front door and I felt like the chaos of the world was where it belonged—outside. I was now in this very peaceful place where I could focus on me and my baby.”

A star is born

THE BAKER FAMILY

B Because of  JFS { Chaverim,

Judy is confident and comfortable stepping outside her comfort zone to try something new.

obbi and Charles Baker were looking for a community for their daughter, Judy, who has special needs. An ad in the newspaper pointed them to JFS { Chaverim, a social club for adults with developmental or intellectual disabilities. In the eight years since becoming a member of JFS { Chaverim, Judy’s self-confidence has improved exponentially. “Because of JFS { Chaverim, Judy is confident and comfortable stepping outside her comfort zone to try something new,” Bobbi said. “It has made a huge difference in her life, and it all started with walking through the doors at JFS.” Charles added, “Because of JFS { Chaverim, Judy is always blossoming – her personality and her abilities. She’s become very conversational over the years and is very active at making new friends.” And while JFS { Chaverim has become a second home for Judy, it has also brought peace of mind to her parents. “There were plenty of nights that I cried myself to sleep thinking, ‘What’s going to become of Judy when I’m not here?’” Bobbi said. “I don’t do that anymore, because JFS has given Judy the self-confidence to take care of herself.” JFS { Chaverim has inspired a new passion for Judy: the stage. From choreographing dance performances, to starring in JFS { Chaverim’s music videos, to featuring as a lead actor in JFS { Chaverim’s first feature film, Bella Danza, Judy’s creativity has flourished. “She wants to be a star,” Charles said. “She practices projecting her voice, singing, and dancing. She enjoys the limelight and the applause.” Bobbi added, “I remember the group was doing a musical number, and Judy was on stage singing and dancing and having the time of her life. At the end of the number, they held up cardboard signs and Judy’s said, ‘My Hero Is My Mother.’ Well, at that point I just couldn’t contain myself any longer. We were in a synagogue, so I got up, went into the sanctuary and through my tears I thanked God that I had found JFS.”
