REBIRTH: Iconic Mountain Shadows Resort Shines Again in Paradise Valley By Michael Sunnucks For Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty CEO Todd Gillenwater, the Mountain Shadows resort in Paradise Valley is personal.

with this wife and two children. He is in the Phoenix and Scottsdale area three to four times a month for work and special events.

“My parents moved here in 1957, My father graduated from law school at the University of Arizona and got a job right out of college in downtown Phoenix,” Gillenwater said of growing up in Paradise Valley. “My parents bought a home about a mile away from Mountain Shadows. My earliest memories are taking tennis lessons here. And my older brother, Troy, drove my father into one of the lakes in a golf cart sometime in the early seventies. So, we have a lot of history with Paradise Valley and Mountain Shadows.”

Gillenwater said buying a Mountain Shadows residence was preferable to renting hotel rooms during his visits to the Valley, that when Mountain Shadows was redeveloped and became available, it was the perfect location to have a place to stay two or three nights on a business trip. On the days he is not staying at the resort, the Gillenwater residence is a part of the resort’s rental and management program.

So, it meant a lot to Gillenwater to see the rebirth of Mountain Shadows with a major rehabilitation and redevelopment of the property in 2017. Gillenwater and his wife ended up buying a second residence at the new Mountain Shadows. “We’re an international real estate company so my wife and I travel the world and get to stay in some of the planet’s most fabulous properties. And to us, Mountain Shadows resonates,” said Gillenwater pointing to the premium finishes of the resort and its unparalleled views of Camelback Mountain and Mummy Mountain. “There is an understated elegance here. Every time, I come on property, my blood pressure drops, and it works for us just beautifully,” Gillenwater said. Gillenwater lives in Flagstaff

Mountain Shadows is also personal for Scott Lyon. Lyon is founder and CEO of Westroc Hospitality which co-developed the new Mountain Shadows with Woodbine Development. Scott Lyon’s grandfather was Russ Lyon, who started Russ Lyon Realty. “My father originally worked for Russ Lyon and then ventured into commercial real estate. And it was through that evolution that he got into hotels. Before, I literally was working as his assistant when he embarked on what was the Boulders Resort in north Carefree and ever since then I have been focused on nothing but hospitality,” Scott Lyon said. Scott Lyon long viewed Mountain Shadows as having the prime site for a resort in Arizona. “This was always considered the best location, the best resort location in Arizona,” Scott Lyon said. Scott Lyon also spent time at Mountain Shadows growing up in Phoenix. “They were known for having the largest pool of any resort in Arizona at the time — so the pool scene was fun. A lot of my friends either were lifeguards or worked somewhere at Mountain Shadows,” said Scott Lyon. Mountain Shadows had fallen to disrepair and shut down when Lyon started pursuing the property with Woodbine after a meeting with principals of the development firm in 2007. Redeveloping and restoring the iconic Paradise

Valley resort was a personal goal for Scott Lyon. “It’s something that I had always felt was the best address in Paradise Valley,” he said. Westroc and Woodbine acquired the Mountain Shadows property and started construction in 2014. The new Mountain Shadows opened in 2017 restored to its midcentury modern architectural heyday.

“You have full access to all the amenities, the housekeeping, room service, all the food and beverage outlets, fitness facilities,” Scott Lyon said. Residents’ interaction with the resort has been put in their own hands. “One of the things we did intentionally was to create a separate arrival experience with separate gatehouse from the arrival experience of the resort guests. You have private

This year the Russ Lyon Charitable Foundation is proud to partner with notMYkid, an organization dedicated to helping youth overcome challenges during their most vulnerable years. By Jennifer Sturgeon

Founded more than 2 decades ago their programs are delivered in schools, community organizations, at the workplace, and direct to devices via a Podcast. The prevention topics they focus on includes substance use, vaping, bullying, relationships, body image, depression/self-injury/suicide, and internet safety. The Russ Lyon Charitable Founation sat down with Kristen Polin CEO of notMYkid to learn more about this amazing organization and how they work to educate and provide coping skills to young people on a range of issues that preteens and teens face every day.

Tell us about notMYkid notMYkid is an Arizona based nonprofit organization that is dedicated to empowering youth to reach their full potential by inspiring positive life choices. We do this by educating youth, families, and the community about the issues that they are facing on a daily basis, by offering tangible tools to intervene, and by discussing the potential consequences of destructive youth behavior. With a vision for every child to reach their full potential through positive life choices, Steve and Debbie Moak cofounded notMYkid in 2000 after battling the substance use disorder of their teenage son. The journey towards their son’s recovery was filled with heartache and regret, as the Moak’s felt that not enough had been done to prevent their son from straying down a destructive path. The firsthand experiences of the Moak’s are what inspired them to develop notMYkid with a simple principle behind its inception; prevention, before intervention.


What does the investment of Russ Lyon Charitable Foundation mean to notMYkid? The Russ Lyon Charitable Foundation directly impacts our mission to inspire positive life choices and proactively prevent behavioral health challenges. Our work is vital, ensuring our youth arrive to adulthood, healthy and whole. Our kids need us now, more than ever. This important investment of $10,000 helps support the notMYkid team with immediate entry into low income or high need schools in our community who will benefit from our programs. This helps to eliminate barriers to vital prevention services that schools typically cannot implement on their own. We are grateful to have this resource and schools know it’s made possible with the support of RLCF. This has never been more important considering recent trends such as: • • • • • •

The average age a child will first try drugs is 13 (in Arizona it is 12) 75% of high school students have used addictive substances Approximately 5,000 youth die each year because of drinking alcohol Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15 to 24-year-olds. Arizona currently has the eighth highest rate of youth suicides in the United States. In the East Valley alone, 38 teens took their lives during the last school year. We understand you have a personal story attached to notMYkid?

In personal recovery myself, I know the struggle and isolation that comes with addiction and I’m doing my part to lead an organization that is committed to reducing stigma and isolation associated with addiction and mental health struggles. Every kid we serve needs to know that they matter and it starts with our incredible team who is on the front lines every day doing this heart work in schools all throughout Arizona. We also have a place for parents wherever we find them to be of support to them through our corporate wellness programs, outreach and early intervention program. It’s such a joy to lead because I know we are making a difference. We make it okay to ask for help and that is the mantra for anyone who works for notMYkid. I have never experienced a team with as much compassion as they have here and so it’s personal for me to also make sure our team is taking care of themselves as they do this heart work. As a parent of two teen boys, I am also humbly aware that my job is just as challenging as any other parent. With 22 years of experience in the field, nothing has been more challenging and rewarding than raising two teens. Its hard work and I want parents to know they are not alone either. We exist just as much for parents/grandparents/caregivers as we do for kids.

How will notMYkid celebrate its 20th anniversary this year? notMYkid has been serving the community for twenty years and our 2020 Platinum Celebration Gala will take place on April 3rd, 2020 at The Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch. This special milestone will celebrate two decades of service in our community, impacting over 2 million youth, families and educators. 100% of the proceeds from this event support our entire operation to offer prevention and early intervention programs in our schools and communities. What are the organization’s goals for 2020 and beyond? Reaching our youth with prevention and/or early intervention programming is critical. Research shows that people who reach the age of 21 without engaging in risky behaviors are likely never to do so. Substance use/ misuse, anxiety, unhealthy relationships and depression and suicide are taking our kids’ lives at alarming rate. We must intervene before it is too late so notMYkid is heavily focused on expansion in 2020 to address today’s challenges our children are facing. The community will see a significant expansion into support services available for youth and families and 2020 and we are excited to launch a full array of services coming later this year. Our community will see a significant increase in support groups, peer support and continuing care with co-located partners onsite at notMYkid.
