Peniche has served it up for the worlds best surfers. Mayhem receptions and huge support from the Portuguese fans, and we’re sure this year’s event will see all that and more.

The Rip Curl Pro Portugal has seen: storms, sun, rain, 10 point rides at pumping Super Tubos, you name it and Peniche has served it up for the worlds best surfers. Mayhem receptions and huge support from the Portuguese fans, and we’re sure this year’s event will see all that and more. We’re hoping for pumping Super Tubos again this year, so that the world’s best surfers can put on a show at one of the world’s best beach breaks for thousands of die hard Portuguese and International surf fans on the beach and to millions watching via the live broadcast & webcast around the world. On behalf of Rip Curl Europe, I would like to personally thank TMN, Turismo De Portugal, EDP, Nestlé, Buondi, Ford and RTP for their involvement

Official Rip Curl Welcome

MeSSAGE from her EXCELLENCY, the Secretary of STATE for tourism It is with great pride that the Portuguese Government is associated with the 3rd edition of the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, one of the stages of the world circuit of professional surfing - the ASP World Tour, that includes the world’s best surfers.

Portugal is a maritime country by excellence with a long history of nautical tradition and that everyday is more recognized internationally when it comes to sea related sports. Portugal is an unpaired destination for the surfing activity all year long, mostly because of Our natural resources that go from pleasant weather to a wide Atlantic coast, with high quality waves for this sport. To these factors, I would like to add the great organization capacity of the National companies, that have been giving to Portugal an international level role in the big events connected to the sea.

6

The kindness and hospitality of the Portuguese people, Our sea inspired gastronomy as well as so many other touristic attractions have been strong allies in the achievement of big projects that We host and want to keep hosting. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the participants a great stay in Portugal, and to invite the Surf lovers to discover some of the best spots in the world that Portugal offers you.

CecĂlia Meireles Secretary of State for Tourism

TMN WORDS

TMN’s presence in the surfing arena began in 2006 and, since then, has continually evolved, with our support to athletes, surf schools and championships.

With the Rip Curl PRO Search, that brought the best surfers in the world to Peniche, tmn reached the highest point of its association to surf. In 2010, thanks to Rip Curl and tmn, Portugal had once again top quality surfing in the waves of Peniche. The success of the two previous editions, the relevance that this event has in the international surf agenda and the opportunity it presents to show Portugal as a premium surfing destination were more than enough reasons for tmn to be present once more. Surf is a sport that shares many values with the tmn brand – audacity, effort, perseverance, amongst others. This

8

link is present in all our sponsorships: in our tmn surf team, that includes our best Portuguese surfers, amongst which is Tiago Pires; the many surf championships we sponsor; and our own events, such as tmn Saca Tour and tmn Saca Juniores, that help promote this sport within those who are beginning to surf but also help young athletes to evolve and maybe, who knows, to become the next Tiago Pires! The World Tour is in Portugal to stay, and so is tmn in the surf arena.

Luis Avelar management board member of TMN

RIP CURL PRO PORTUGAL INNOVATION AND EXCELLENCE The year of 2009 will be remembered on professional surfing’s history as of return and innovation.

The year of 2009 will be remembered on professional surfing’s history as of return and innovation. Rip Curl International, along with its affiliates - Portuguese and French, and with the precious involvement from the city of Peniche and Turismo de Portugal, took an adventurous step into an audacious project: to bring back an ASP World Tour contest to Portuguese lands. But this project couldn’t be just a «oneoff» stop from the traditional «Search», the travelling event on the ASP calendar, neither just another contest on the tour agenda. The people involved had dreams and goals much higher than that, and the Portuguese fans and Portuguese surfing community deserved a permanent event with world’s surfing elite. Regarding quality and offer of waves, Peniche has always been one of the greatest Portuguese and European surf

10

spots, however, if we talk about logistics, it’s not an easy area to work with when executing a surf contest at the World Tour level. To guarantee the contest success, «mobility» became the key word! Besides the major event site at Peniche’s «queen of waves» beach, worldly known as Supertubos, backup structures had to be placed in Lagido, Belgas and Molhe Leste! An extremely well planning and execution were imperative to achieve the project’s success, and when the ASP World Tour finally arrived in Peniche, we, «the foreigners», were amazed with the high quality of the structures at our disposal. Being on the ASP World Tour for 22 years and as Tour Manager for 10, I have never witnessed a so well structured first event like the one we had in 2009! But we know that a well-built structure is not enough to guarantee the success of a contest. It is also necessary a competent and

professional team that has a real passion for the work – only this way we can achieve success. And it was all of this that we found on the Rip Curl Pro Peniche 2009! Guided by the young talent Francisco Spínola, head of Portuguese Rip Curl Marketing, and with the experience of «Jêjê» from the French Rip Curl, we faced a trifecta – competence, professionalism and passion – that drove the event to its ultimate success, surpassing unexpected ordeals, like when the “ocean in motion” destroyed the main site of Supertubos. Besides the usual Rip Curl team, ASP had the fortune to meet and work with the most active politician in charge of a town that was already visited by the World Tour! We’re talking about our dearest «Tó-Zé», a real «Frother» in the surf lingo. With him we witnessed a passion for the city, for the sport and a total dedication to the event that none of us had ever seen. The unmatchable contest debut in the World Tour, alongside the excellent waves conditions in the Peniche area, lead all the names mentioned above, alongside ASP International, to witness something that for many seemed impossible: to turn the contest into a permanent stop on the WT calendar. A lot of paperwork had to be dealt with, also budget details,

chronograms, calendars... until we finally declared that Rip Curl, Peniche and Portugal would officially have a permanent stop on the ASP World Tour. Along came 2010, and all the organizers, the city and the Portuguese people proved everyone that this was the right decision to make! Rip Curl Pro Portugal has brought innovation once again through the first HD and 3D live broadcast, with the admirable support of an extraordinary television and webcast technical crew. Even the Top 34 stood in line in front of one of the technical crew’s trucks at Belgas to watch the heats with 3D glasses. To end with perfection, Supertubos gave us powerful waves and tubes on the last two days of competition, and Kelly Slater and Jordy Smith provided the fans a passionate and exciting final. ASP International is proud to be associated to Rip Curl and the city of Peniche in this endeavor, because we’re sure that innovation and excellence will «surf» alongside us in this contest throughout many, and many years to come. Have a fantastic event! Renato Hickel Tour Manager ASP WT

Message from the Mayor of Peniche Welcome! It is an honor for Peniche for our region and for Portugal to receive the World Tour again.

Those will be fantastic and surprising days. The thousands of people that come to our waves and the millions of web surfers and viewers around the world who watch the tour are a proof of that. The unpredictability of the weather, the unpredictability of the waves, the spectacular maneuvers, the healthy and party environment turn our event into something not to be missed by anyone, wherever they are. Peniche has been preparing to ensure that the 2011 edition can be once again a successful event. Thus, we are valuing the best surfers on the planet who are well acquainted with our waves and our public. With this attitude we are also adding value to the Rip Curl and

12

ASP focus on our territory and to the partnership with Peniche and Portugal. We also want to meet the objectives of our sponsors so that we can, despite the global financial crisis that we are going through, definitely stay in the route of what I call the formula 1 of the surf. Welcome to the increasingly wave capital. I am looking forward to finding you here as well as to share with all of you our territory our people, our waves and our culture, our best fish, our natural landscapes, especially Berlengas which was recently nominated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. A big friendly hug from

Ant贸nio Jos茅 Correia Peniche Mayor

MICK FANNING

In life and in competition Mick Fanning has faced some monumental hurdles. In 1998, when he was 16 years old and his career was just taking off, his older brother, Sean—who was also an aspiring surfer—was killed in a car accident. Although he was completely heartbroken after Sean’s passing, Mick stayed true to his brother and his dreams and continued to rise through the ranks of professional surfing. In 2002, his rookie year on the ASP World Tour, Mick finished in the top five and looked to continue to move closer to the top when in 2004 tragedy struck again. While on a photo trip to Indonesia, Mick tore his hamstring off the bone when he fell trying to execute a critical turn. Mick underwent major surgery and doctors were unsure if he would ever be able to fully recover. But Mick would hear none of that. A committed training regimen got him back in the water and on the Tour only six months later.

14

Back in full flight, Mick’s next test would be C the same challenge every World Tour surfer of the 2000s had to face: the domination M of Kelly Slater and Andy Irons. But after winning the first event of 2007, Mick put Y together one of the most impressive competitive seasons of all-time, winning CM three events and finishing runner-up in one, MY and equal third in four. He had defied the odds and proudly brought the ASP World CY Title back to Australia since Mark Occhilupo CMY won the World Title in 1999. Mick went on to win the World Title once again in 2009 and finish runner-up in the ratings points in 2010 to Kelly Slater. But it is safe to say the Mick Fanning isn’t going anywhere for a long time. Still radically committed to training and the World Tour, Mick is as lightning fast and explosive as ever, making him exciting to watch and an inspiration for both his fellow professional surfers and his throngs of fans across the globe.

KELLY SLATER

16

Kelly Slater’s sheer domination of competitive surfing is something that has not only gone unmatched in surfing, but across all sports in the history of mankind. Touted by many pundits as one of the greatest athletes of all-time, the 10-time ASP World Champion has clashed with nearly all of surfing’s greatest gladiators, from Tom Carroll to Martin Potter to the late Andy Irons. And now, in 2011, Slater has a mindblowing 11th World Title in his sights.

At the 2010 Rip Curl Pro Search «Somewhere in Puerto Rico»—nearly twenty years after claiming his first Title—Kelly once again was not stopped and took a historic, emotional tenth ASP World Championship crown. And after much speculation on whether ten would be it, Slater returned in 2011 to take the first event of the season on the Gold Coast of Australia, then the Billabong Pro in Tahiti, setting himself up for a very possible number eleven.

The Floridian prodigy began his ASP World Title legacy when he claimed his first crown in 1992 and followed it up by conquering the majority of the last decade of the Twentieth Century, raking up another six championships before the ‘90s came to a close. After a brief sabbatical from surfing between 1999 and 2001, Slater returned to face surfing’s new generation of top talent, led by Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning and, of course, Andy Irons, who rose to be the only surfer to match Slater’s technical and mental domination with raw skill and pure passion.

Slater’s legendary celebrity status constantly attracts frenzied fans and media attention wherever he goes. But regardless of this lack of privacy, Slater doesn’t seem to be receding backstage anytime soon. He is to surfing what Michael Jordan is to basketball and what Tiger Woods is to golf. Always the gentleman and a staunch supporter of charity organizations like Life Rolls On, SurfAid and the Space Coast Early Intervention Center, Kelly Slater is a true steward of our sport and unquestionably the greatest surfer in history.

17

TIAGO PIRES

The first and only Portuguese in the ASP World Tour is back to Peniche. Now in his 4th year on the world elite, Saca – a national hero in Portugal – is facing the world’s best surfers at an equal level due to his strong determination and talent. On his rookie year Tiago earned a great amount of respect from other Tour surfers when he was the first man from the Top 45 to take out Kelly Slater from his invincibility path on the way to another world title. That happened on the first half of 2008 at the Rip Curl Pro Search Indonesia, and since then the two surfers have faced each other innumerous times. In six man-on-man battles, each one of them took home three victories. Could we expect a rematch in the Rip Curl Pro Peniche 2011?!... We’ll have to wait and

18

see! Known as the “Portuguese Tiger”, he started the year in great form with a 3rd place in the opening contest, and then took a 9th place on Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach 50th anniversary. And now he is searching for not only a good result in Peniche, but also for something that he’s been missing on the last events – excellent surf conditions to show his true potential to the thousands of fans he brings to the beach every time he competes! Competing at home could determine the right wave selection and Saca, who lives in Ericeira, very close to Peniche, knows the waters better than anyone, making him one of the favorites and one true adversary to be dealt with by the Top 34 surfers. All of this because he knows the tubes of Peniche and has already won contests at Supertubos!

PORTUGAL Portugal is located in the southeast of the European Continent, more precisely in the Iberian Peninsula. It boards Spain at North and East, and the Atlantic Ocean at South and West. Madeira and Azores archipelagos are also part of Portuguese territory. The official language is Portuguese, eventhough most inhabitants also speaks English, language that is part of Public School Programs. A country that is recognized by its hospitality, Portugal attracts a great number of tourists every year, being Lisbon (capital), the Algarve, the Islands (Madeira and Azores), Alentejo, Oporto and North Region the most visited areas.

PENICHE Widely recognised as the best and most consistent surf spot in Europe, the peninsula of Peniche offers a north and south-facing coastline. The result is the finest surfing conditions everyday regardless of the swell and wind direction. The Peninsula of Peniche will always offer a beach where the wind will be offshore and waves will be good.

THE WAVES The event can take place in two different spots. Main Spot: Supertubos – World famous break known for its perfectly tubular waves. This spot is famous for its lefts but mainly provides epic rights. Supertubos was acknowledged by Surfer magazine as being one of the best waves in the world.

Swell direction: Sudoeste. Wind: North-East.

Secondary Spot: Pico da Mota - Beach with multiple surf peaks. Sand bars mixed with some rocks & sand.

HISTORY OF

GRom search

Founded in 1999 in Torquay, Australia, the Rip Curl GromSearch series is the most prestigious set of 16 & under surfing contests in the world, run in all key surfing regions of the world including Brazil, Australia, USA, Indonesia, South Africa, New Zealand and Europe. The overall champions from each of these regions are awarded prize entry to represent their country at the International GromSearch final held as part of the world famous Rip Curl Pro world tour event at Bells Beach, Australia. The phenomenal talent coming through the GromSearch series

is illustrated by former finalists including Stephanie Gilmore (4x world champion), Australian prodigy Owen Wright (currently world ASP #2 ranking), Jordy Smith (current world ASP #4), Sally Fitzgibbons (2011 ASP world title runner-up), Tyler Wright (the youngest surfer in history to win a World Tour Event) and Matt Wilkinson (current world ASP #17). This year the European Series was held over 10 stops in four different countries: France, Spain, Portugal, England. The series will culminate with the European final to be held in Peniche as a part of the Rip Curl Pro Portugal.

The Shinkickers A young rock band with blues influences, The Shinkickers were formed in Hossegor, France, by three musician-friends - Quentin (lead vocals and guitar), PierreLouis (bass guitar) and JeanBaptiste (drums). After a crazy 28

GABRIEL MEDINA

French tour with 22 concerts last year and a great gig at the 2010 Rip Curl Music Festival, The Shinkickers are coming to Peniche to put on several great shows at the Rip Curl Pro Portugal.

Gabriel is one of the most promising young surfers on the planet and already has a string of impressive competition results at the early age of 17. This talented goofy footer turns every heat he surfs into the “Medina Show” through his futuristic and high flying aerial surfing act. The Brazilian prodigy has just qualified for the ASP World Tour after a string of amazing performances in 2011 - especially during the European leg, winning both the Sooruz Lacanau Pro in France and the San Miguel Pro in Spain, scoring many perfect 10’s along the way. Medina’s dominant showing at the Airwalk Lacanau Pro Junior is still being talked about, with a never-before-seen performance that included seven consecutive heat wins by a combination score, three 10-point wave scores, one perfect 20-point heat score, the event’s Top 9 Wave Scores and Top 7 Heat Scores. Amazing.
