Local Associations Install 2022 Leadership

written by RIKI MARKOWITZ

January is a time when the rest of the world makes New Year’s resolutions (and then promptly breaks them). For real estate associations, namely Williamson County REALTORS (WCREALTORS) and Austin Board of REALTORS (ABoR), it’s time to welcome back returning and reveal new Board of Directors. In this year’s President’s Letter, Cord Shiflet explains why these real estate associations in Central Texas are so important. “We’re strong when we work together,” says Cord. One of his goals is to extend a hand to surrounding MLSs and strategic partners on efforts that benefit the entire community.

Austin Board of REALTORS®

A Year of Thriving in 2022 There’s no denying the last few years have been challenging. All of Austin, including REALTORS®, have been living and working from a “do whatever it takes” mindset for many months now. When you are so focused on meeting your clients’ needs and navigating competing offers and complex deals, one after the other, it’s easy to forget the toll that such a constant grind can take on your health and well-being.

CORD SHIFLET

2022 PRESIDENT

Now it’s time to turn the page. As your 2022 ABoR and ACTRIS President, I want 2022 to be our Year of Thriving — for our careers, our clients, our families and our communities. I hope we can reconnect with the purpose and joy that brought all of us to real estate to begin with — helping others find a place to call home. Here’s what you can expect for our Year of Thriving in 2022:

Digging Deep into the Communities We Serve As REALTORS®, we are uniquely positioned to care for, and be ambassadors for, our communities. No other profession has such a front-row seat to the needs of Central Texas families and opportunities to serve our neighbors. This year, it is my goal to ensure we are lifting our community up in every way possible. As part of that commitment, ABoR will be holding community-wide REALTOR® Service Days next year where real estate professionals from across Central Texas can join together to make a massive impact in our own backyards. There will be opportunities for anyone and everyone to get involved. Be on the lookout for more information about these initiatives from the ABoR Foundation this spring! Digging deep into the communities we serve also looks like maximizing our $1 million, 10-year commitment to Community First! Village. Championing diversity, equity and inclusion through our Diversity Committee to tackling important local issues and creating real results for housing accessibility through ABoR Advocacy. Most of all, ABoR will be focused on getting

4

JAN. 20, 2022 - FEB. 19, 2022 | REALTYLINE.US

out into the community and reminding Central Texans that we’re here, we care and we matter. Homebuyers, sellers and renters need REALTORS® to help them navigate a tough and complex market, and REALTORS® care deeply about building community.

Building Relationships to Make a Difference We’re stronger when we work together. This year, ABoR will be extending a hand (and maybe a friendly challenge or two) to our surrounding real estate associations, MLSs and Strategic Partners to collaborate on these community-wide efforts.

Benefits & Resources for Your Well-Being From ABoR and ACTRIS, you can expect new resources and tools that strengthen the well-being of your business, your career, your health and your clients. As always, we’ve kicked off the year with a bang — just look below at some of the new benefits and programs that are going on this month. I don’t know anywhere else that offers opportunities to get state-of-the-art tech, awards, scholarships and unlimited, 24/7 doctor’s visits — just sayin’! That’s in addition to the numerous classes and events we offer every month — many of them free for members — at ABoR.com/Calendar. Finally, my last priority for 2022 is to stay out of the way of the amazing team our CEO, Emily Chenevert, has built. Thanks to their hard work and day in, day out dedication, our Association and MLS are experiencing unprecedented levels of membership growth and member engagement. We have the right team in place and I feel the best thing we can do is stay out of their way and let them do what they best know how to do! I am excited to round out my seven years on the ABoR and ACTRIS MLS Boards of Directors as your 2022 President. It’s an honor to represent our membership and our real estate community and I am grateful for your trust in me to lead this organization. I hope you will join me this year in lifting up our communities and getting engaged in your

Association. I’m always available for a call or a text and happy to respond to all your emails. Let’s have coffee and talk about what we can do to get you involved at ABoR. Come join the fun!

We’re Declaring 2022 A Year of Thriving There’s no better way to kick off our Year of Thriving than with big tech prizes that enhances your personal and professional well-being at the same time! Women’s Council of REALTORS, Austin Network

Re-Evaluating and Resetting in the New Year At the start of a New Year, we tend to look at the accomplishments and growth or heartache that we experienced over the past year and then make resolutions and set goals for the year ahead. We evaluate our finances, insurance, stocks, etc.

LORRIE KENNEDY

2022 PRESIDENT

This is the ideal time to take a look at the systems and templates you have in place as well. Critique them for efficiency. When you are the busiest, having strong systems and templates can ensure that you don’t let anything “slip through the cracks.” But all the greatest systems, strategies and templates make no difference without implementation. So we block our time for designated tasks and then get sidetracked with busy work and get stuck. So… how do we get ourselves unstuck and actually progressing to the next level, the next goal? Recently, I read a blog by Lee Davenport in “The Lounge” on YPN.Realtor, where she provided seven questions to ask yourself as your blocking out your calendar — It’s definitely worth sharing. 1. What does your ideal workday look like? 2. How does an actual day compare to that ideal day? In other words, what does not get done? Let’s call these the “waysides” things you know would grow your business if you regularly implemented them,

2022 Austin Mortgage Bankers Association Board of Directors

but for whatever reason, they fall by the wayside of your schedule. 3. On the occasions when you achieved the waysides, what resources and circumstances helped you? Let’s call these “support tools.” 4. How can you access these support tools each workday? What needs to change? What needs to become permanent? Pay close attention to this answer. This is your money maker. 5. What gets in the way? List them. To often we create a schedule without any buffers for interruptions that are a common part of real estate life. 6. What’s next? From all of these questions that I hope spur thinking and brainstorming, what can you implement? 7. What will keep you accountable to act? You do not have to stay stuck. Make 2022 the year of getting unstuck and manifesting all your business can be.

Executive Committee President Jim Sikes, president; Michelle Goldberg, vice president; Angela Bujnoch, treasurer; Kate Couture, secretary; Mike Carroll, Jr., past-president; and Natalie Penland, past-president executive advisor Members at Large Rochelle Rowan, Haley Duhon, John McCully Steve Builta, Kendra Eakins, Jill Love, Beverly Kerbow, Jessica Bovee-Bradford and Mimi Paxson

Take time to sit down with yourself or an accountability partner and genuinely answer these questions, then adjust your time blocking for success in 2022. If you don’t have an accountability partner, they are probably waiting for you at Women’s Council of REALTORS, Austin Network. Register for an event and expect to meet like-minded REALTORS, constantly.

Williamson County Association of REALTORS

Relationship, Advocacy, Community, Education I am honored to be serving as the 2022 President for the Williamson County Association of REALTORS®. Over the past year, we as an association had to take action to continue to serve at the highest level, as we navigated the ever-changing waters that 2021 brought our way. We’ve worked hard over the past few years to set the PACE for Williamson County — now we continue to charge forward and start the RACE. As 2022 commences, we are given the opportunity to affirm plans for new goals and directions. This year WCREALTORS is committed to Relationships, Advocacy, Community and Education.

MICHELE SHERWOOD

2022 PRESIDENT

As REALTORS®, we know that relationships are vital to our businesses and they help us build our validity of knowledge. We would not exist as an Association without these relationships — our members, our affiliates and our business partners. In 2022, we are committed to building new relationships while strengthening our existing ones. We are ready to connect with those in our industry again and are excited to have a multitude of networking events and mixers scheduled for this year. The unsung heroes of the real estate industry are those who advocate for real property rights. WCREALTORS takes pride in our TREPAC major investors and we plan to continue our advocacy efforts to be the voice of reason. When the world shut down our industry did not. In other states, REALTORS®, appraisers, inspectors and lenders couldn’t work. With adjustments, those who had these professions in the state of Texas did. Why? Because of the investments of our members. We not only have the ability to fight for private property rights, but we can also protect the integrity of our industry. I grew up in Williamson County, and although I moved away a couple of times, I always found my way back home. There really is something special about this place I call home — which is probably why central Texas is the most sought-after area in the world. Williamson County is a great place to do business and an even better place to live. WCREALTORS is excited to show Williamson County our heart in 2022 and cannot wait for the opportunity to give back to the community in which we belong. The favorable market of Williamson County has led to an influx of new agents. With new agents comes new opportunities to educate our members to be connected and competent to the industry. We are committed to offering continuing education opportunities of immense value to our members. We plan to do all of this as we navigate whatever 2022 throws our way. We will find the new norm of events, education and community in order to stabilize the new world that we have stepped foot in. We are Williamson County. We are Just North of Weird. We make a difference in someone’s life every day.

IN PERSPECTIVE written by Rachel Arterberry

Jazz Lough, the Agent Development Manager at Austin Real Estate Experts, brings her energy and passion to the real estate industry. Having worked with RealtyLine for the last 15 years, she understands the value of the publication and appreciates what it brings to herself and others. Being available online and in print has been a tremendous asset to REALTORS, especially in the Austin area. “It is a great way to connect with other realtors. I gravitate to the paper publication and love that clients can have a tangible product that they can refer to that includes pictures, events and serves as a go-to resource. I even request it for the agents in my office. Sure, you can look at it online, which is great, but for some reason, there is just something special about having something in your hands.”

A Return to Vinyl! As we move further into the digital age, with social media and virtual tours consuming the real estate industry, Jazz equates the RealtyLine publication to a nostalgic feeling similar to the return of vinyl records in the music industry. While it is convenient to click through the songs to listen to your favorite genre, there is something special about holding a vinyl record in your hand and reading the lyrics on the cover. According to Jazz, the beauty of social media is that it tells a story, just like the notes of every song. When MTV was famous for its music videos, singers and songwriters visually walked us through the story behind the music. “Isn’t this why we take photographs?” Lough asks. “Pictures tell a story, and what

better way to walk someone through the story of a home than through the beautiful pictures and descriptions in a publication that they can flip through. Even while the world was under lockdown due to the pandemic, we could still give people the opportunity to walk through a home through virtual tours and the beauty of pictures.” Lough further goes on to say of the publication, “it’s nice seeing a look local homes, events, people, grand openings and what’s going on around town, this literally makes my heart smile and full of joy.”

A Thriving Industry The real estate industry is still vivacious and thriving, and Realty Line brings that energy to keep us going. Whether you choose to click through the pages online or hold a paper copy in your hands, Jazz shares how the publication helps fuel and elevate Realtors’ mindset. At Austin Real Estate Experts, she helps owners Greg Young and Matt Menard manage the brokerage. She explains that she knew that their company was a hidden gem from the moment she interviewed with the pair. Coming from the building industry, Young and Menard knew what they liked and what they wanted to change in the real estate industry. As Agent Development Manager, Jazz takes on every day with passion and perseverance. She approaches the training program for agents as a student in a driver’s education class. “You may understand the concept but may never have had the chance to get behind the wheel.” Her role is not to change

anything but to elevate agents’ mindsets. Jazz wants everyone to understand and be passionate about what the real estate industry can bring, that they are all amazing and important, and to make sure they feel safe, loved and respected. Through the company training program and great resources like Realty Line Publication, Jazz reminds agents of why they are in the industry and what brought them there.

Life-Changers and Miracle Workers Lastly, through her infectious energy, Jazz Lough shares her perspective on life, comparing it to the keyboard of a computer. We are all familiar with the capabilities of pressing the Control Alt Delete buttons simultaneously. In Jazz’s words, “the control is controlling yourself. The alt is to alter your thinking, and the delete is to delete negativity from your mind. That’s what we work on because we’re super amazing. As a REALTOR, we’re life-changers; we’re miracle workers, but none of those things are our official job titles. That’s just what we are. We’re a REALTOR.” Austin Real Estate Experts is not just about selling homes; “we are all about elevating others to reach their full potential through weekly meetings or providing resources like RealtyLine publication, we do our best to elevate every one of our partners.” Consider joining this amazing group of like-minded agents to elevate your business to the next level. Lough concludes by saying, “We are always looking for some highly effective people to grow with us.”
