Words by Shuan Butcher Have you ever wondered why the city’s seal includes church spires? Steeples in downtown areas aren’t unique in American towns, but John Greenleaf Whittier’s poem about Barbara Fritchie, penned in 1863, forever immortalized Frederick’s clustered spires. A phrase of just five words in a folklorish tale about a woman’s stand against the Confederate Army has become synonymous with the City of Frederick for the past 150 years.
