Words by Ty Unglebower En plein air is a French term meaning “in the open air.� The expression is most commonly utilized to describe the act of painting while outdoors. Beginning in the mid to late 1800s as painting equipment became more portable, en plein air painting became increasingly popular with both amateur artists and the masters.
Imagine walking around Paris in the last quarter of the 19th century. You perhaps would see Claude Monet himself among other painters outside, stationed all over the place with their supplies, capturing on canvas what the natural outdoor light revealed to them. You might experience a feeling of art being almost literally in the air all around you. Now imagine walking around in downtown Frederick between June 20 and June 22.
