Located a stone’s throw from Shab Row in a little white building on East Church Street, Angelcakes is a quaint bake shop making a name for itself. The inside is just as simple as the outside, with glass-covered pedestals showcasing the shop’s “Everyday” cupcakes, along with the “Just for the Day” cupcakes. If you’re a creature of habit, look for the pedestals to be stocked with flavors like Madagascar Vanilla, Scarlet Red Velvet, Black and White, Shaved Coconut and Chocolate Ganache Crème, as well as seasonal treats like this winter’s Chocolate Raspberry. However, stray a little from the norm, and you’ll find tempting flavor treats including Root Beer Float, Apple Strudel, Snicker Doodle, and another seasonal treat, Maple Pecan. The austere cupcakes are a pleasure, with just enough decoration to look formal but not over-the-top. Angelcakes’ not too sweet buttercream is light, almost like a whipped frosting, and it sits in a perfectly piped dollop atop the cake. Whether they’re baking cupcakes for a wedding, your kid’s next party, or simply a few cupcakes for your after work treat, it’s clear that Frederick loves Angelcakes— the shop’s treats were just voted “Best Dessert” in the February 2012 edition of Frederick Magazine. On the Sister’s Bake Shop website there’s a quote that states, “Building relationships that last a lifetime,” and if you spend just 10 minutes with JoAnn and Samantha you’ll find that quote to be more of a mantra than just a simple slogan on their website. Warm and inviting, the two are eager to please, and the thought they put into their cupcakes and their customers is evident. Rather than a standard set of cupcake flavors, Sisters Bake Shop rotates six to 15 flavors. JoAnn explains, “We keep it fresh, and we try not to be plain. We’ll have some seasonal flavors, but we like to focus more on what our customers want.” Favorite customer flavors include German Chocolate, Lemon Blueberry, Slippery Butterfinger and Salted Caramel. But, if there’s a flavor combo you’re interested in, chances are JoAnn and Samantha will be willing to try it out for your next event. In addition to selling cupcakes for birthdays, weddings, and other special occasions, Sister’s Bake Shop donates a lot of cupcakes back to the community. “Every Tuesday we give cupcakes to Heartly House,” says Samantha. “It really means a lot to them, and it’s the least we can do.”
