A Small Background

Mr. Sachin Gupte did not start Poona Shims Private Limited (POSH), but he grew the business and made it more successful. He has wanted to be a business owner since he was a child. In 1972, his father, Mr. Anil Gupte, started the Parent Company, a sole proprietorship. In 1981, Poona Shims Private Limited (POSH) was set up to make import replacements for the Indian Engineering Industry.

The Inspiration

Mr. Sachin Gupte was always excited about making new products. When he was young, he looked up to the great Indian industrialists like J.R.D. Tata and S.L. Kirloskar. He remembers seeing Abasaheb Garware and S. L. Kirloskar being interviewed on TV. Mr. Sachin Gupte has always been inspired by the fact that he can run the company on his terms. After getting his engineering degree, he went to work for his father’s company, POSH, which was still in the workshop phase.

POSH has always been based on the idea that it can make world-class Indian products and change how the rest of the world sees the Indian business world. When Mr. Sachin went to work for his father in 1990, his first task was to lay down and put in place different Quality Systems, such as the ISO 9000 Series.

Sachin Gupte, Managing Director

Mr. Sachin Gupte is a Managing Director of Poona Shims Private Limited. He studied Electrical Engineering at Government College of Engineering, Pune & immediately joined POSH in June, 1990. Side by side he attended various Management Development Programmes at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. He is a certified Lead Assessor for Quality Systems under ISO 9000 Series.

Harshada Gupte, Director, Administration & Human Resources

Ms. Harshada Gupte is a Director of Poona Shims Private Limited. The Centre International de Formation Européenne gave her a Master’s in Advanced and International and European Studies. She also has an M.A. in German from Savitribai Phule Pune University and a B.A. in English. With her desire to always learn and do more, she has ensured that everyone at the company can work peacefully. She uses the latest technology in her department to do POSH work as efficiently as feasible.

Aamod Gupte, Director, Technical & Marketing

Mr. Aamod Gupte is a Director of Poona Shims Private Limited. He did his graduation in Design from Falmouth University, Cornwall, England. Later on, he did a Certificate course at Royal College of Arts, London. Recently, he attended a Management Development Programme at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.

The Challenges

When Mr. Sachin joined POSH, it had lost Rs. 43 lacs, even though it had made Rs. 1.18 crores in sales. So, from the first day he started working, it was a struggle to build a business and get more customers. Mr. Anil was a technical genius, and the business was built on a solid technical foundation. Mr. Sachin Gupte was and still is more concerned with how well the business runs and how much money it makes. He used POSH’s technological background to his advantage and travelled extensively to get more clients, first in India and then abroad.

The Steps Sachin Took to Grow

From 1992, India started slowly joining the open market system. From a lack of availability of products made in India to problems with supply of raw materials, the company’s creativity and efforts to make products in India helped it overcome problems and make India’s auto industry more self-sufficient. When Mr. Sachin joined Poona Shims Private Limited (POSH) in 1990, it was a small and locally-based company run by his father. The first problem was getting the company to focus on systems rather than letting people mess with them. Back then, the company had few clients outside the Pune-Mumbai Industrial belt. Mr. Sachin’s first three years on the job were spent getting customers from all over India and a few from outside the country. Improvisation in manufacturing set up was also carried out at the same time. To do that, he used to get up at 6:15 in the morning and go to bed at 12:15 after midnight. Besides, he spent his Thursday weekly off at the company’s Customer Offices. There were also times when he worked every day for three months straight without a single holiday.

Today, Poona Shims Private Limited (POSH) is a midsized company that cares a lot about quality, is responsible, professional, and moving forward. It also never breaks its promises. Many of the company’s customers have been with it since it started (40+ years ago), and many have been buying from it for 25+ years. He says, “There is money to be made, but the first few years require much patience. Having enough experience and support from your family and life partner is important. When I started working in 1990, POSH was losing Rs. 43 lacs, and I used an old two-wheeler to get to our shop, which was 17 kilometres from my house. What were the initial challenges faced by your business?

Initial challenges were essentially that whenever people think of consulting, they think of large expenses. It took me a while to explain to the youngsters that times and business models have changed. Cheap and affordable consulting is also possible.

To begin, how is your brand-defining “trust” in the market? What stands behind its uniqueness? Short term trust can be built by smart marketing campaigns but long-term trust can only be built by actions. We don’t believe in short term relationships. For us, we want to be with our clients till they have attained success which they aspire for.

That is what is behind its uniqueness.

What are the offerings (services/solutions)?

Our relationships start with us trying to understand our customer’s business, its founders’ vision, financial situation and other current status of the company.

Post that we work with our clients to work out their strategy, business plans, and action plans. Once that is done, usually we start by supporting them in increasing their sales.

We are very hands on people so I not only tell them what to do but also sit with them in customer calls, go with them for the customer meetings etc.).

The idea is not to just tell but do things with them so that they can also learn by watching.

Generally, post the improvement in Sales starts the work on Delivery, HR etc. Because as the business starts to grow, it has to delivered and it has to be delivered by people…. of course, during the entire time, Finances remain under the magnifying glass at all times.

These are the offerings that we have, essentially, the entire business cycle.

In an age of mistrust, are you seeing an evolution in how consumers trust brands, or are they still for the most part doubtful?

As I mentioned before, trust takes time to build, solidify and sustain. Any short-term measure not backed with solid work results in loss of trust. Since many brands are going for short term measures, suspicion persists.

How did you make your mark in the industry and in the heart of the customers?

I have been in the industry since the 1980’s so I knew most of the happenings for long time. Also, working for a long time in US, UK and France helped me further.

There is only one way to make a mark in the heart of your customers, deliver value and stay laser focused on it at all times.

What is a customer for you?

I don’t like the concept of customer. For me, there are some people or some company which have needs which I can fulfill as a partner (not in the legal sense). I am that partner. I am not there to make money off that company, I am there to first make them succeed and then thru that make my living.

How well are the clients connected with your brand?

Quite well.

I have never run any sales or marketing campaign. Customers have come to me purely by word to mouth. We are working in US, UK and I am also a mentor for Tech Manchester (a group whose vision is to help SME’s in Greater Manchester Area).

What are the most effective marketing initiatives or programs you have used to promote your initiatives/offerings/services?

Like I said before, I don’t run such campaigns. Customers come to me thru word of mouth because somewhere I try not to look at them as a customer.

Have you measured how much trust consumers have in your brand?

Haven’t lost any customer due to poor mentorship or guidance so far. That is my biggest measure of trust.

What’s the first thing that enters a consumer’s mind when they see your brand?

A company which is a friend, philosopher, guide…and mentor. More like a elder in the house who cares for the family and youngsters yet has the capability to help in the development of the young ones.

What is the future plan connected with the brand?

We have gone international in times of Covid. We now want to expand our footprint in Europe.

How has been your journey as an entrepreneur? Exciting, Exhilarating and amazing. It’s the most beautiful feeling to see your client partner succeed. The smile on the owner’s face makes it all worthwhile.

What do you hope to accomplish within the next year from personal as well as professional point of view?

Am planning to write a book to summarize my experiences of this journey. For the company, going farther and deeper internationally is my plan.

Dhani

It is a UPI app from the Indiabulls group that is not limited to being an e-wallet. It can be combined with Dhani SuperSaver Card which is a physical and virtual card for online transactions. Not only phone recharge and EMI payments, but users can also play games and win cash to pay for the same.

Yono by SBI

This e-wallet service under the registered SBI banking app Yono offers services in 13 languages. Apart from regular payments and money transfers, it allows customers to set helpful reminders to pay their bills and issue mini statements to keep a record of transactions. Operations are controlled by SBI itself and there is rarely any technical problem with transactions.

HDFC PayZapp

PayZapp from HDFC Bank offers a complete UPI payment solution. Right from financing your bills, to mobile recharges or booking a flight or movie tickets, it does all. It is a permanent hassle-free payment solution for HDFC users along with other customers who don’t own an HDFC account. There are no additional charges.

Amazon Pay

A customer must have an Amazon account to make payments on external websites such as Smart Bazaar, etc. Users can also shop from Amazon and pay via easy monthly installments. This e-wallet is integrated with the Amazon India Shop and Pay app. For each Amazon user, Amazon Pay is a must to get refunds or to make online transactions easy.

ICICI Pockets

Users of this UPI app can avail of a virtual Visa card that helps them to transact easily with any website or mobile application in their country. It also offers packages and deals from associate brands. Users can also separately collect and store money from their savings account using this digital wallet to safeguard money and use them when required.
