EDITOR’S LETTER

Love it

Hi there!

ABOVE: Fresh ideas for a speedy kitchen revamp, p74 LEFT: Creative gifts to make for Mothering Sunday, p102 BELOW: Delicious teatime treats, p110

While I wait for the shops to reopen, I’ve been doing a combo of online shopping, eBay stalking (to get my charity shop fix) and compiling wish lists. With a new house to decorate (we moved just before Christmas), I’m also perfecting the art of shopping my home – refreshing the spaces with things I already own taken from other spots in the house. Switching things up gives me the shopping spree buzz, and highlights gaps that I genuinely need to buy items for. There are plenty of other ways to give a room a much-needed lift: Try a Speedy Style Update (p74) is packed with quick and easy ideas. I’ll pass the Brilliant Bakes recipes (p110) to my 11-year-old son, who got the baking bug in Lockdown 1.0 and is still going strong, so hopefully there’ll be a sweet reward for all my hard work!

TILE TREND

Get the look and feel of luxurious marble for less

T

here’s a reason why marble is so popular – it’s elegant, it’s timeless and, because it’s mined from the earth, each and every inch of this luxe stone is unique. Unfortunately, it comes with a hefty price tag and even Carrara, the most affordable marble, can put a big dent in your budget. Don’t despair though, as there are other options available that mean you can still get the look of marble at a much more budget-friendly price. For those after an at-home spa vibe, look at Serac tiles. This is sumptuous, real marble with a honed matt finish and a soft look (similar to the ‘tummy’ stone found in Turkish baths) that can transform a room into a retreat. But whether it’s large-format tiles in a sleek bathroom, a kitchen splashback, or chic marble-look tiles underfoot, Topps Tiles’ Get The Look For Less range offers great style and even better prices. From ceramic wall tiles with the look of stone, or porcelain designs suitable for flooring in a wet room, there are plenty of looks to choose from.

Metro Carrara tiles, £24.50sq m, Topps Tiles

Got your heart set on high-end Calacatta stone, with its distinctive bold veining? Calacatta ceramic tiles from Topps Tiles have all the visual drama of real marble, but none of the maintenance – and you can use them with underfloor heating, too*. Maybe you prefer a more iconic design, in which case the Metro Carrara tiles could be for you. Whichever tiles you choose, you’ll be getting realistic shading and veining, both at a cheaper cost than premium marble.

How is DFS bringing a sustainable twist to the boucle textile trend? The well-known soft furnishings company’s bestselling French Connection Studio range is now available covered in a more eco-friendly version of this textured loop fabric, which has been manufactured with yarn created using waste plastic recovered from the open ocean. We’re told it takes approximately 170 recycled plastic bottles to produce enough fabric to cover each sofa, all of which can be upholstered in a choice of eight colours. Still super soft, the 100% recycled yarn matches traditional fabrics for longevity, too.

SLEEK STYLE

‘We chose the Milano kitchen from Wren in two-tone grey, as we felt something modern would suit the property’

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Lucy Stone, 40, the owner of online home and gift shop, Stone & Co (stoneandcoshop.co.uk). I live here with my fiancé Damien Walker, 39, and our two children, Leyton, nine, and six-year-old Alexa. OUR HOME A four-bed detached 1970s property in Cheltenham. We moved here in July 2013. WHEN WE MOVED IN Every room needed updating and the downstairs layout felt impractical. AND NOW We’ve put our stamp on the interior with a modern, Scandi feel and reconfigured the space to create a contemporary living area. STYLE TIP Don’t shy away from trying your hand at DIY projects; by watching YouTube and Pinterest tutorials I discovered that tiling and panelling were easier than I expected.

home’s POTENTIAL’ BRIGHT IDEA

‘This blue velvet sofa from Swoon was on my lust list – it adds a splash of colour to the neutral space’

Transforming an impractical, dated layout into a sociable family hub has given Lucy’s home a new lease of life

S

earching for our long-term family home meant we embarked on our house hunt armed with a lengthy wish list of must-haves,’ says Lucy. ‘We looked for over a year, and eventually realised we had to compromise on the style of property we were after. When this detached 1970s house came on the market, it ticked so many of our boxes and I could instantly visualise knocking down walls to create exactly what we’d been looking for. The potential was just too good to pass up.

Starting the search

IDEA TO STEAL

‘Zone an open-plan living area by laying a soft rug underfoot to help define this part of the room’

Both Damien and I were keen to put down family roots in Cheltenham, as we knew the area well and loved the mixture of town and countryside living it offers. There are lots of festivals and familyfriendly events throughout the year and having pretty Cotswolds villages on our doorstep was an added bonus. I originally had my heart set on the kind of Regencystyle property that Cheltenham is famed for, but we also wanted off-road parking and a garage, which limited our search somewhat. With house prices steadily rising, we had to speed up our search and compromise on the style of the house, which opened up a lot more options. This spacious four-bedroom property popped up at the right time and offered bags of potential; as a couple, we aren’t afraid of DIY or getting stuck into a project, so we jumped at the opportunity.

Time for change

When we first moved in, there were a few issues that needed attention urgently, such as a leaking shower which had caused damage to the living room ceiling. We tackled our son Leyton’s bedroom next, as it was a quick cosmetic job to modernise, and then slowly worked our way through the other rooms. When it

came to structural changes, we reconfigured the downstairs layout at the back of the house, knocking through to join the old kitchen and dining room together, and creating a 3x10m rear extension. This large-scale new space meant we were able to create the multi-purpose kitchen, living and dining space that we’d envisioned when we first viewed the property.

We spoke to several builders about the project and went with our gut feeling on who we felt a good connection with. We were anxious about starting the work, as previously we had always done any DIY jobs and decorating ourselves, rather than putting our trust in someone else, but with a project of this scale we knew we needed to call in the experts. It was a very exciting experience watching the new space take shape and seeing our ideas unfold. Once the new layout was in place, it was clear how drastically the transformation was going to affect how we lived in the house; for a start we’d be able to spend time together as a family, without feeling like we were on top of one another!

Styling the space As we stripped back every room, the house was essentially a blank canvas for

us to put our own stamp on the interior, particularly in the brand-new extension. I’ve always been drawn to modern, Scandi style and this has translated into how I decorated throughout. I gathered a lot of inspiration from magazines, as well as through Pinterest and Instagram, where I have a dedicated interiors feed, @lucystone80. My background as a homeware buyer and product developer meant I already had a good idea of the type of look I wanted to create in my home, and I have access to lots of fantastic products through my own online shop @stoneandco.

DESIGN DETAILS

‘I tend to keep my styling quite pared back and minimalist – I love a modern, Scandi look’

Do it!

LAY VINYL FLOORING Lucy chose Amtico’s luxury vinyl flooring in wood-effect sun-bleached oak to run through their new extension. The chevron pattern adds interest without being overly busy, and continuing it through the space helps to link the kitchen, dining and living areas. Vinyl is a practical option for high-traffic areas of the house, thanks to its hardwearing qualities. It’s also water-resistant and easy to keep clean, so ideal for busy households. A lot of modern vinyls are compatible with underfloor heating, too. Vinyls come in a wide range of colours and designs – from wood or tile-effect to patterns and plain finishes – so there are numerous options to make it fit in with your new or existing decor.

DIY PROJECT

SPACE SAVER

‘WALLPAPER USED FOR AN ALCOVE OR FEATURE WALL ADDS AN EXTRA HIT OF DRAMA TO A SCHEME’ Splashing out I kept the open-plan space modern in its styling, to suit the new kitchen’s clean lines and minimalist finish. Grey and white is a timeless combination and I love the fact it’s easy to update or change by adding splashes of colour through artwork and accessories. I also wanted to keep the room feeling as bright as possible, as this is very much our daytime space, and the light-coloured walls help to create the feeling of airiness. I’m glad that we took the decision to splash out on the large back wall of glazing in the extension, as the amount of daylight it lets in is incredible, even on gloomy days. In the living room, I chose a cosier colour palette with some richer tones, as this is where we retreat to in the evenings and so the change in decoration suits the space.

‘We chose wall lights rather than table lamps to save space. These are from Amazon’

CUSTOM FIT

‘We built a dressing table using scaffolding planks, and finished the alcove wall in Boho wallpaper from John Lewis & Partners’

Do it!

ALCOVE DRESSING TABLE

1

Find a suitable piece of wood to use as the surface; this needs to be as flat as possible to ensure it can fix neatly to the wall. Lucy used a reclaimed scaffolding plank, but you could also source the wood from a local timber yard. Cut the piece of wood to size so it will fit snugly into your chosen alcove. Sand all surfaces to give it a smooth finish and avoid any splintering. Seal the wood with a suitable oil or varnish, depending on your preferred finish, and leave to dry. Repeat if necessary. Fix a batten of wood to the walls either side of the alcove using wall plugs and screws, then sit your table top onto the battens and secure in place with screws.

Proud achievement

The home we now live in feels a million miles from the dated house we first viewed back in 2013 – every room has been decorated from scratch – and it just goes to show how important it is to look past immediate appearances and search out the potential in any property. I think the old-fashioned configuration downstairs with separate rooms put a lot of people off, but as soon as we saw the plans for the new extension, we knew we’d made the right decision and could create a home to be proud of. The whole experience has been positive and it’s made me excited to tackle another renovation one day, but not until we’ve spent some time enjoying the family home we’ve worked so hard to achieve here.’ Find more clever ideas to style up your home by going to pinterest.com/ styleathomemag

A neutral palette makes up the backbone of this home’s modern decor, with feature walls adding interest and bolder decorative touches, such as cushions and artwork, being used to add personality.

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Emma Rawlinson, a hair salon receptionist. I live here with my husband Matt, a commercial interior designer, and our children, Rudy, 11, and Patsy, nine. OUR HOME A four-bed semi-detached Victorian villa in Cheltenham. We moved here in 2011. WHEN WE MOVED IN The house was a run-down rental property comprising seven bedsits, with most of the original features ripped out. AND NOW We’ve built two singlestorey extensions and reconnected the basement flat to the main house, to create a vibrant family home. STYLE TIP Embrace original features where you can, and add your own quirky curios and contemporary twists for a house that’s thoroughly original.

SEVEN BEDSITS!’

Emma and Matt’s blend of Victorian detail, antique finds and colour hits has created a unique and eclectic family home

SIMPLE DESIGN

‘Matt designed the kitchen, bearing in mind my dislike of wall units. I like the simplicity of low-level cupboards’

W

e’d dreamed of moving to Cheltenham; it’s close to my parents, and not too far from our former home in Birmingham,’ says Emma. ‘However, buying somewhere that needed work was the only way we could afford to live here, and this house certainly needed lots of TLC. It consisted of seven bedsits, and the original features had been stripped out. Our offer was accepted in May 2011 and we had to move fast to convert the rundown rental into a family home by Christmas. So as soon as we collected the keys, we headed around to the property with a sledge hammer at the ready!

Major transformations were needed throughout. We planned a complete rewire, two single-storey extensions for the kitchen and playroom, and a rejigging upstairs to create a master suite complete with dressing room. We also reconnected the basement flat to the main part of the house and turned that into a home office. We’d anticipated being able to live here while the work was happening, but with two small children running around and the back of the house covered in tarpaulin to keep the rain out, it was impossible. Instead, we decamped to my parents’ home in Worcester; all four of us crammed into my childhood bedroom, living out of suitcases. Living like that definitely concentrates the mind on getting things done! Thankfully, Matt put his skills as a commercial interior designer to good use – he did all the drawing work himself, as well as the electrical and plumbing layouts, and, when the builders arrived, he project managed the work.

Meeting the deadline Matt’s work contacts were brilliant for nabbing good deals for the kitchen. He

TAKE YOUR PICK

‘I love these Howdens units, while the open shelving is from Ikea. Mix and match suppliers to suit your style’

‘FOR A UNIQUE HOME FILL YOUR HOUSE WITH EBAY BARGAINS AND QUIRKY ONE-OFF AUCTION FINDS’ designed it with my preferences in mind, so we’ve got high open shelving and low-level units. The room is in the middle of the house, so even though it’s a single-storey extension with skylights, it has a propensity to be quite dark. I can’t think of a better colour we could have used than yellow. It’s bright and fresh, and just makes you happy to come in here. We moved in a week before Christmas. All the bedrooms had been painted, nearly everywhere was carpeted, and the main bathrooms were finished. The kitchen was fully functional in the nick of time, and we managed to cook Christmas lunch for 15, although we had to put cardboard down because the floor hadn’t yet been tiled.

Going for bold

In a house of this age and size, you can either go sensible and mature, or you can go the other way and be really bold. We love the drama you get by blasting out strong colour. We found our living

TOP TIPS FOR ANTIQUING Make a plan before you go. Jot down the items you’re looking for and have measurements handy, as well as a top budget limit. Be open to items from different eras, rather than one particular style. A mix of eras gives a fresh look. Consider damaged pieces; a wobbly leg or scratch in the wood can easily be repaired. But avoid anything with water damage. When in doubt, reupholster. Vintage armchairs and sofas often have great lines, so update them with a fabulous fabric, instead of buying a completely new piece.

DESIGN A GALLERY WALL

1 2

Pick a selection of favourite photos, paintings and graffiti art in a variety of sizes and shapes. Think about the room – dark frames suit a sleek, neutral hallway, wood works well in an airy kitchen, and coloured frames are fun for kids’ bedrooms. Plan the layout by sticking paper templates to the wall with masking tape. Aim for a 2cm gap between each frame. Create a relaxed formation that can be added to over time. Start with a rectangular frame in the centre and work outwards. This style is more forgiving for a mix of frames and pictures.

‘The dark walls are brilliant to accentuate our collection of graffiti art. We’ve been collecting it for over a decade’

HIDDEN DETAIL

‘Finding the arch behind the plasterboard was such a surprise. You never know what you might unearth in a period property’

A ‘FOLLOW YOUR STYLE INSTINCTS – IF YOU WANT TO ADD STANDOUT PIECE LIKE THE KINGFISHER BLUE CARPET MORE IS MORE ‘In the living room, SIMPLY DESIGN THE REST OF THE ROOM AROUND IT’ we’ve accessorised with flowers, plaster busts, statuettes and ornate frames’

room carpet at an outlet store in Kidderminster and had to have it because it’s such a bonkers colour – kingfisher blue. We designed the room around it.

Surprise discovery The house had some period details when we bought it, like original sash windows, but lots of the Victorian features had to be reinstated. We sourced doors, banisters and fireplaces from eBay which have returned the house to its Victorian glory. A brilliant moment was when we’d been tapping around and could see the imprint of an arch on the wall between the two reception rooms. We got all excited and peeled off the old lining paper to find a perfect arch that had been boarded up with plaster. So we knocked it all out and found the original skirting board was completely intact underneath.

o ector s e g t We’ve filled the house with antique finds and vintage pieces. Part of Matt’s job is sourcing furniture, accessories and curios from auctions around the country, for doing up pubs and restaurants, and a lot of items have ended up furnishing our home. Auctions are brilliant; you can pick up some amazing things you’d never find anywhere else. We’ve got plaster sculptures, oil paintings… even taxidermy! We don’t always keep everything, sometimes we’ll have a piece for a few weeks before it moves on to a job. Our decor is constantly evolving.

paint our new master bedroom in the same shade. Pairing it with white creates balance and doesn’t overpower the room.

Pick your battles

While the kitchen and playroom extensions were being built at the back, the plumbers took up the floorboards in the main house to lay new pipes for the bathrooms and en suites. It meant we got to decide where we needed things, rather than working around the previous owner’s choices. When it came to the bathrooms, we went round drawing on the walls exactly where we wanted the electric sockets to go. Sometimes, though, you’ve just got to be flexible and go with what you’ve got. To which end we replastered all the new areas, but decided to live with a few lumpy walls in the original parts of the building, because at the end of the day, it’s an old house and it’s important to embrace what you have.’ Find more clever ideas to style up your home by going to pinterest.com/ styleathomemag

rowing up in a cottage in Penzance, Cornwall, I couldn’t imagine not living by the sea,’ says Samuel. ‘The first time I visited Brighton I didn’t want to leave and fell in love instantly with its buzz, diversity and unique shops. Six months later, I moved here and met my husband Daniel. We bought our first flat here four years ago, which we did up ourselves and sold, enabling us to buy this cottage. I had always wanted to live on this street as it reminds me of the Cornish cottage where I spent my childhood. Situated in the North Laines, it’s the perfect central Brighton location. We named the house after my mother-in-law, who sadly passed away the day our offer was accepted. We were lucky that we could stay living in our previous flat, as we had a couple of weeks’ gap before moving in here. The previous owners had lived here for over 40 years and unfortunately, nearly every original feature had been ripped out in the 1970s, but it ticked all the boxes and was the perfect challenge to transform into a country cottage.

Within the first week of owning the house, we got to work and removed all traces of the woodchip wallpaper and ripped up the tatty brown carpets. I took out the existing 1970s banister myself, as it crowded the ground-floor space and restricted moving furniture upstairs. This has really opened up and enhanced the living-dining area. One of my top priorities was to lay wide plank floorboards, which we sourced through a building merchant. We asked a local builder to fit them. He also installed a Victorian fireplace found on Gumtree. As my dad is a decorator by trade,

he did all the decorating work for us, including painting the floorboards and skimming the ceilings.

Keep it light One of the project highlights was winning a competition with Fired Earth which meant the paint was totally free! A small property like this cries out for light and airy colours that invite a sense of calm. I’m drawn to pale pastel blues and pinks as they are timeless and relaxing to live with. I wanted to revamp the kitchen as inexpensively as possible, so I replaced the wall units with open shelves for a feeling of space, and painted the rest of the units myself. I ripped off the dated tiles and replaced them with tongue and groove panelling that I fitted and painted myself. I swapped the standard tall unit for a unique antique French cupboard (an eBay find) that works

as a miniature pantry. It adds so much character to the kitchen and is practical too, as it stores all of our groceries and cutlery. I painted the existing beech laminate worktops myself, using laminate paint. The handles on the units are all different Victorian antique door handles bought from a local car boot sale; I love the chipped-paint worn look to them.

LOAF LIFE

‘A marble bread board doubles as a chopping board’

Vintage chic

My appreciation of interiors and anything vintage began when I was a child, when my parents would take me to car boot sales every weekend. I loved the thrill of what I might find. My nan taught me to sew and I made all my own soft furnishings. I used to collect blue and white china and would display it inside a cosy outbuilding in the garden, where I loved hanging out, dreaming of the home I would own one day. Brighton has some fabulous communal recycling bins where you can find great furniture items to upcycle for free. I’m a bargain hunter and will hunt down thrifty buys in charity shops and car boot sales, and source items on Gumtree and eBay.

ADD PERSONALITY For a vintage finish, swap a pedestal basin for a salvaged vanity unit. Scour second-hand shops and online marketplaces for an old wooden cabinet to upcycle

the STYLE RULES BIG AND BOLD For an instant update, consider tiling the floor or even behind the sink with a decorative design. Go with uniform stars or mix and match with plain tiles. CHOOSE ALL-OUT DRAMA Black and white is the perfect pairing – the large white tiles and free-standing bath reflect light, allowing expanses of black to create a dramatic impact.

MAXIMISE YOUR SPACE A frameless shower screen is an ideal choice to make any bathroom feel more spacious and is a streamlined alternative to a fabric shower curtain. ACHIEVE A SEAMLESS LOOK Create the illusion of a larger space by continuing the floor tiles halfway up the wall. Choose a white marble effect to further increase the spacious feel. BUILD EXTRA SHELVING Consider extending the height of boxed pipework to create a shelf, ideal for displaying accessories and holding cleaning products and toiletries.

MAKE IT MARBLE Hard-wearing, striking and easy to lay, faux marble tiles are an ideal choice for those looking to create the feeling of luxury while working to a budget. SET A DRAMATIC TONE Finish a modern bathroom with a contemporary angled basin, teamed with matt black fixtures to enhance the ripples throughout the marble flooring.

Nature motifs and stripes are on trend, but also timeless in style, providing the ideal update. ZONE THE SINK AREA Mosaic tiles will add texture and decoration to any bathroom. Choose glossy black tiles to introduce a shot of interest against

earthy shades. Look for meshbacked sheets for easy fixing. Why it works the STYLE RULES STICK TO SERENE SHADES Give an all-blue colour palette a twist by using a mixture of artisan tiles with a subtle variation from piece to piece – here, sky blues sit alongside inky hues, giving a handmade finish. GO FOR A RUG EFFECT If you want to incorporate pattern, but are worried about overpowering a space, then consider a statement-tiled area

in the centre. Team with a plain tile from the same range for cohesion. CREATE A WET ROOM Tiling to the height of your ceiling will create a sense of continuity and draw the eye upwards, giving the illusion of grandeur. MIX UP ERAS Add a striking focal point to a modern scheme with a traditional free-standing bath. One on feet will allow light to fill the space.

COMPLEMENTARY CO-ORDINATES

‘My copper-finished microwave blends in with the wooden shelf’

‘Bargain buys

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Katie Stanton, 46, a complementary therapist, and I live in a three-bed, three-storey corner-terraced home in Brighton. I bought the house in October 2019 and moved in after several months of extensive renovations. After the bathroom the kitchen was the second room completed. MY CHALLENGE It originally had cream units which were very dated. My initial plan was to replace the cupboard doors as the layout was fine, but I realised that the units had water damage, so the whole kitchen would need to be replaced. MY WISH LIST Something modern that had some rustic elements and I was desperate to get rid of the wall units so it would open up the space. Although it’s a basement kitchen I really wanted to have a dark blue kitchen, dark walls with accents of copper and space for some of my vintage accessories.

ver the years I’ve rented and bought several properties in the area, but I always wanted something closer to the beach and Brighton town centre, so it would be easier to get around, plus give me enough space to run my business from home,’ says Katie. ‘I liked the location of this house, previously a shop and restaurant, so I put in a cheeky low offer; the owners accepted and it was all systems go!

Making a plan The kitchen units were water damaged and fragile, so rather than try to update them I decided to replace them. My builder suggested Howdens as they would help with the design and deliver quickly. I kept the existing layout, with the units and integrated items at one end and dining space at the other. I set my heart on Howdens navy blue Chelford units, which have a modern Shaker feel. I blew the budget with a quartz worktop, but I love cooking, and I’ll be here for a long time, so it will be worth the extra expense.

While I waited for the kitchen to arrive, I chose flooring and walls. I wanted a resin floor, but it was too expensive to pay to have it done professionally, so I did it myself. I used a glossy screed which I coloured grey and the results were brilliant. Once the units were fitted I turned my attention to the walls. Rather than wall tiles, I used textured floor tiles left over from the bathroom makeover, and the effect was amazing. It was just what I wanted and saved some pennies too! I had the original cooker serviced and fitted it back neatly into the old fireplace opening, then I painted the wall dark blue to match the units. Brass handles

The dining area With the kitchen more or less sorted my attention turned to the dining area. Here I kept the walls white and painted the back wall in a new rustic textured paint from Fusion, which gives the effect of cracked plaster walls. I also had an old radiator reconditioned and painted it blue to coordinate with the kitchen units. The dining table was a bargain buy from eBay, which I sanded down and treated, while the benches were from a local vintage shop and I just added seat pads and a throw for comfort. A low-level rustic styled lamp adds some

much-needed light to the space, but the small window alcove painted in reflective paint also helps keep this end of the room light and bright.

Styling it up You can’t live in Brighton and not make use of the local vintage and bric-a-brac shops for furniture. I managed to pick up wall cabinets and shelves, a large storage unit, and some quirky accessories all for under £400. I also added some faux grass panels to the outside window to add interest, while a large sisal rug and fun prints give the room a coastal feel. I couldn’t be happier with the room; it feels so much bigger and is such a great place to entertain – it’s just what I wanted.’

RESIN FLOORING

Katie’schoice:

RESIN FLOORING

Durable, easy-clean and soft underfoot, resin is a smart flooring choice

Whatisresinflooring? Ingredients vary but it’s essentially a mix of resin, pigment and hardeners. Polyurethane (PU) is the most popular type used for domestic use. Like concrete, resin flooring comes in liquid form, but unlike concrete it won’t crack as it sets. It’s also pleasant to walk on, even bare foot.

Why is it good for using in kitchens? The lack of bacteria-harbouring joints makes resin ultra-hygienic. Designed for heavy traffic use and waterproof, resin

BEST FOR… FINDING A SUPPLIER

The Resin Flooring Association (FeRFA) is the leading authority on resin flooring and has a searchable database of resin floor specialists that follow its strict standards on training, service and safety.

TRENDY TERRAZZO

Sphere8 has developed a specialist terrazzo-style flooring called BrecciaSphere that mixes natural poured resin and aggregates, with stunning results; it also has the benefit of a 10-year guarantee.

GREAT SERVICE

The Resin Floor Co prides itself on individual project management with stringent quality control and on-going inspection throughout the installation process, to ensure perfection every time.

86 | MARCH 2021

can handle the wear and tear of a busy kitchen. Dropped crockery is less likely to break and it’s suitable over underfloor heating.

Howisitinstalled? Resin flooring is not considered a DIY product, so do budget for installation. It’s poured directly onto a prepared (stable, crack-free) floor, in thin layers, by specialists. The final coats seal and protect against scratching. Curing times depend on the resin type but expect installation to take at least four to five days.

Isitexpensive? Expect to pay around £140-£180sq m fully installed (excluding any prep work). On the plus side, resin flooring is generally very thin, as little as 4mm, so can often go on top of suitable existing floors, saving the cost of removing old flooring.

3 of the best TEXTURED TILES

Howcan I keep costs down? Do the prep work yourself, to your installer’s recommendations. Sticking to a single colour resin from a standard colour chart will also help. Two-tone mixes to emulate concrete and customised colour-mixing will hike up costs. Slip-resistant coatings are worth the investment, especially on glossy resin.

‘It’s gone from HOT SPOT

‘A traditionalstyle radiator complements the period of the house’

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I am Hannah PottingerBanks, 35, a PA at a sales company. I live with my husband Vinny, 33, who is a data scientist. MY CHALLENGE The bathroom, although a good size, was not to my taste at all and it felt dark and gloomy. I wanted a traditional but exciting, stimulating look. Because the chimney breast runs behind the shower we were limited with layout. MY WISH LIST To create a space that looked completely different, while keeping all the elements in the same place (to avoid replumbing costs). I wanted a traditionalmeets-Italian vibe, while ensuring practicality was top of the list, as it’s the only bathroom in the house.

DRAB TO FAB!’

Inspired by a swanky Italian hotel bathroom suite, Hannah took an open-minded approach to planning her space

IDEA TO STEAL

‘The shape of this mirror echoes the round tile patterns’

W

e had lived in this house as tenants since 2015 before we started looking for somewhere to buy in 2017,’ says Hannah. ‘When I told our landlord that we’d viewed a property on the same road, he offered to sell us this house instead. It worked out well all round, because we got the house at a good price, didn’t have the hassle or cost of moving, and we were well acquainted with the changes we wanted to make.

Traditional roots The original bathroom was done out in teal and brown, and was very old fashioned. I wanted a rolltop bath, but Vinny thought we should ditch the bath entirely, and just have a shower, as there wasn’t comfortably room for both in the room. However, I found a semi-rolltop bath with a shower screen that fits neatly against the wall, which was a happy compromise. I chose a high-level traditional-style loo, just like my nan had in her house. I can’t remember the last time I went to a house with one, but I love it. I was worried we would have issues with the plumbing, as our old loo had a temperamental flush; a thing that niggled at us every single day. So we were so pleased that the new loo flushed normally.

Making compromises

TOTAL

£5,400 TURN OVER FOR MY SHOPPING LIST

Once I’d found the bath and loo, I started looking for other sanitaryware that would work in the space. Because we’ve only got one bathroom, every detail was important. I wanted Vinny and I to be able to have a conversation in front of the mirror, and would have loved a his and hers double sink. Sadly, the chimney breast, which would have been expensive and messy to move, limited our options. We couldn’t

MARCH 2021 | 89

fit a double basin into the existing space, and there was no point in changing the rest of the layout and adding further to the costs, so in the end we kept the layout as it was and chose a traditional single basin, which works really well with the look.

Italian influence

Walls came next. The year we got married we went to the Amalfi coast in Italy. The stunning, traditionally Italian, bluepatterned bathroom tiles in our hotel en suite were my inspiration. They always get lots of compliments from visitors, but in hindsight I would be even braver and would have gone even more extreme in terms of colour and pattern. Something for next time!

CHANGE OF PLAN

‘I wanted a double basin, but didn’t have enough space, so we chose a pretty, neat style instead’

Warmth underfoot

The original floor was covered in unattractive brown lino, which had to go. I couldn’t find the particular timber, with a blue grain, I was after and I knew I didn’t want tiles, as I’m cold all the time, so in the end we chose vinyl, which has been laid over the underfloor heating, and so it’s nice and warm and feels great underfoot. The only slight downside to it is that I didn’t consider how much stains would show up, as it’s a light colour, but we’ll have to live with that for now, and it looks lovely when it’s clean.

Finishing touches

The blue and white colour scheme needed a bit of contrast, so I’ve introduced a hit of bright yellow with the towels and other small accessories. A big leafy houseplant works well here too, and is certainly easy to maintain and keep well watered!’

your water pressure and hot water supply can cope. If you have a low pressure system you’ll need a compatible shower head – designed for use with 0.2 bar pressure or less – or invest in a pump.

Whygofixed?

ShouldIadda hand-shower?

Delivering a clean, minimalist look, fixed shower heads are designed to be used with concealed controls, which means the majority of pipework is neatly hidden within the wall. Ceiling mounted versions are better in smaller spaces, as the water flows straight down, but wall-mounted is ideal if your ceilings are low. Don’t forget to add the price of the mounting arm to your budget – they’re usually sold separately.

Fixed heads can make it hard to avoid getting your hair wet, and aren’t terribly good at hosing your shower enclosure clean. Adding a hand-shower with diverter controls is a simple yet effective way to make your fixed shower far more practical.

Whataboutheight adjustment? To accommodate varying user heights, choose a model with an adjustable mounting arm that lets you direct the shower spray higher, or lower. This option is also handy in smaller enclosures as you can steer the spray away from the entrance.

Anygreatfeatures? For extra luxury seek multiple spray options that let you switch from rainfall to pulse, waterfall or jet. Rubber nozzles are designed for easy cleaning – you just rub deposits off with your thumb or a damp cloth. They are especially useful in hard water areas.

All you need to start is a lino block and a set of cutters with various blades, which allow you to create different marks. The idea is to remove the negative space – so the untouched material is what will print to make the positive image. Once you’ve carved your stamp, apply printing ink using a brayer (rubber roller), then print onto thick paper or fabric. Your lino can be washed and reused as many times as you like. Multiply the height you’d like your pot to be by 1.5 and add 4.5cm. Take the desired diameter and add 7cm. Use these measurements to cut two rectangles each from patterned outer fabric and plain lining. Sew the sides and bottom of the outer pieces, right sides facing, using a 1cm seam allowance. Repeat for the lining, leaving a 5cm gap in the bottom seam. On the outer pouch, flatten the bottom corners, so the seams are on top of each other. Measure in 3.5cm from the point and draw a line. Sew across this line and snip the corner 1cm away from the stitching. Repeat for the other corner and lining. Turn out the outer pouch and slip inside the lining, so the fabrics are right sides facing and the seams are matching. Pin and sew around the top, using a 1cm seam allowance. Turn the whole pouch out and top-stitch 3mm from the top edge. Hand-stitch the gap in the lining closed. Fold the rim of the pot over twice to finish.

Crops for

SMALL SPACES Sowing these easy vegetables and salads will keep going all summer, no matter how little space you have for them

H

omegrown tastes better and is so easy to do. This year, make growing your own a feature of your garden, whatever its size. It’s also good for your wellbeing: growing your own produce can give you a sense of calm and achievement, and a regular supply for the kitchen. From salad with extra crunch to heavenly scented tomatoes and fresh herbs, it’s all very doable. The trick is to grow small amounts of different crops that offer big rewards. Avoid anything that needs elaborate preparation and cultivation and go for easy options such as cut-and-come-again salad, perpetual spinach and dwarf kale, herbs, chillies, dwarf varieties of French beans and compact tomatoes. Edible flowers such as nasturtium, borage and calendula will add a pretty touch to your veg garden. Try mixing containers of herbs, tomatoes and chillies, for example, or large pots of mixed herbs, rather than separate varieties

Getting started You need to decide whether you are going to grow from seed or from plug plants. Plug plants and larger potted specimens are widely available from garden centres and via mail order, but you can also sow your own seeds with great results. It’s very easy to do and much more economical. You can start them off in trays of compost now on a windowsill or in a greenhouse and plant outdoors from late March. Remember, for crops like salad leaves, lettuce and beans, you will need to keep sowing seeds at regular intervals to ensure a steady crop throughout the summer.

In a tight spot Even if your outdoor area is on the small side, as long as you utilise it efficiently there’s still lots you can grow. The sheltered environment offered by a

5 easy plants FOR POTS

PERPETUAL SPINACH

The perfect cut-and-comeagain crop, this will be prolific through the summer and autumn. Pick smaller leaves for salads, and keep on harvesting – it will keep on giving. Try ‘Popeye’ or ‘Medania’.

ZESTY ROCKET

The one salad leaf you won’t want to be without. Packed with flavour, it looks pretty growing in a pot by the back door, too. This tasty salad leaf is also the easiest one to grow. Pick regularly to keep the leaves coming fast. Try ‘Skyrocket’, ‘Apollo’ or ‘Runway’.

balcony means it’s the perfect space for growing your veg and herbs. There’s usually plenty of wall area on a balcony for slotting in vertical planters or a trellis to provide support for young plants. Courtyards and patios generally offer more space for growing things than a balcony or terrace, but shade can be an issue if you’re overlooked by other houses. Just remember to choose the sunniest and most sheltered spot possible for your vegetables and herbs. If that all sounds too much like hard work to you, you can always order plug plants online from nurseries, from May. These developed plants will arrive ready to plant outside in the garden.

TUMBLING TOMATOES

Choose a compact bush variety with clusters of cherry toms that cascade over the sides of the container, with no need for training or trimming side shoots. Try ‘Tumbling Tom Red’, ‘Balconi Red’ or ‘Tumbler’.

SPRING ONIONS

FEATURE SARAH WILSON PHOTOGRAPHS ALAMY STOCK PHOTO

How to grow While shallow pots are suitable for growing salad leaves and herbs, you will need to use deeper containers for crops such as dwarf French beans and tomatoes, so that the pot will accommodate their deeper roots. Vegetables always do their best in well-drained compost. Make sure there are enough drainage holes in the base of the container and add a layer of broken crocks. Use a light, free-draining

compost, such as John Innes No 2, and mix in a good handful of horticultural grit. It’s a good idea to raise the pots on feet to allow excess water to drain away. Your crop will benefit from feeding, so either add a controlled-release fertiliser to the soil or use a general-purpose feed. Tomatoes will need a high-potash feed, while leafy crops like spinach and lettuce will benefit from a nitrogen-rich fertiliser.

BALCONIES CAN BE GREAT SPOTS FOR PLANTERS FULL OF HERBS AND VEGETABLES. KE THE MOST OF THE SPACE YOU HAVE BY USING PLANTERS AND RACKS THAT ARE DESIGNED TO BE HUNG SAFELY ON THE RAILINGS.

Sow seeds in a large pot of compost, keep the soil moist and, as soon as they are pencil sized, you can harvest, usually in around eight weeks. Leave others to round out and remember to keep sowing for a regular supply. Choose ‘White Lisbon’ or ‘Apache’.

DWARF FRENCH BEANS

Also available in purple and yellow varieties, these love a container and only grow to around 40-60cm in height. They don’t need a bamboo wigwam for support, plus they’re stringless. Try ‘Boston’ or ‘Amethyst’.

here is something very striking about the forms and colours of succulents and cacti in an elegant container. 1

PAINTYOURPLANTER Clean the planter and allow it to dry. In a well-ventilated room, or outside, place newspaper on your work surface and spray-paint the planter. Leave to dry. CREATEAMPLEDRAINAGE Cover the holes at the bottom of the planter with drainage crocks. The roots don’t like to become waterlogged. ADDTHEPOTTINGMIX Fill the planter with potting mix, so that the root ball of the largest succulent sits just below the rim. If you don’t have any specialist cacti and succulents potting mix, add fine gravel or horticultural sand to make the potting mix more free-draining. PLANTYOURSUCCULENTS Remove plants from their pots and arrange in the planter. Break off small florets from the succulents and use to fill any spaces, as long as they have a root. FINISHOFFYOURDISPLAY Add more potting mix between the plants and firm in gently. Ensure you retain the gap between the top of the soil and the top of the planter, so water doesn’t run over and splatter potting mix everywhere. WATERYOURPLANTER Water the planter until you see water running out of the bottom, and allow it to drain. Let the planter dry out between waterings.
