When in doubt, pick a white with few undertones.”

the absolutely-awfully-OMG-wrong paint color THE FAIL “We spent hours researching paint colors for our living room and finally picked a charcoal gray. After we uploaded a photo of the room to a preview site, we jumped in and started painting. We immediately saw it was darker than we’d expected but tried not to freak out and hoped it would dry OK. Nope! It’s like living in a cave. We want to redo it in a lighter shade, but now we’re worried that testing samples over the darker paint won’t be accurate and we’ll once again end up with a color we hate.” —Kristen, Philadelphia, PA 50 HGTV Magazine
THE FIX “Online tools can give an idea of how a color will look, but you have to see it on your walls to know for sure,” says Clare paint founder Nicole Gibbons. Shades vary dramatically depending on a room’s lighting and furniture. To test colors, pros recommend painting your top two favorites on white poster board (at 22 by 28 inches, they’re sizable, so you can assess even when placed on dark walls). oh noooo— peekaboo curtains THE FAIL “When we bought our place, I got full-length white linen curtains for our bedroom window. I didn’t put much thought into the width—I was mainly concerned with the length—and it shows. They don’t completely block light, and we’re waking up at the crack of dawn. Help!” —Anna, Evanston, IL THE FIX It’s easy enough: Add one or two more panels to fill the gaps. You want the total width of your curtains to be at least twice the width of your window. “A rod correctly installed into a stud or with anchors in drywall can easily support several curtains,” says LeeAnn Baker, a designer in Seattle, WA. If you’re up for it, the panels can be sewn together or connected with hook-and-loop fasteners so you’re only pulling one swath of fabric when you open or close them. To give sheerish curtains more light-blocking power, sew blackout material onto their backs or tap a tailor to do the job.
caution: floor may cause dizziness THE FAIL “I finally got motivated to redo my dingy porcelain bathroom tile. After applying three coats of primer and a white base coat with porch-and-floor paint, I filled in the stencil pattern with blue porch paint. But the lines didn’t come out crisp and the blurriness is driving me crazy!” —Amanda, Knightdale, NC THE FIX “There was probably too much paint on the roller when the stenciling was done, the most common reason for a pattern that bleeds,” says Geoff Sharp, owner of Sharper Impressions Painting, which serves the Midwest and Southeast. The best plan? A do-over. Start by lightly sanding the tiles with a fine-grit sandpaper. Repaint the base coat and let it cure for 24 to 48 hours, then stencil on the pattern. “Using porch paint for the base and the stenciling is a good choice since it’s made to hold up to water,” says Sharp. Repaint the stencil pattern using a foam roller. For the cleanest edges, after dipping the roller in the tray, roll off excess paint on paper towels and avoid pressing down too hard when applying. Then quickly lift up the stencil in one smooth move while the paint is still a little wet.
window’s stuck, now what? THE FAIL “After I painted my interior window trim, the windows were sealed shut. This is both annoying and unsafe! How can I unstick them without ruining the paint job?” —Andrew, Huntsville, AL THE FIX Run a utility knife along the seams, says Timisha Porcher, who writes the blog ToolBox Divas. If that doesn’t do the trick, wedge a trim puller (it looks like a spatula with a bent tip) under the window and pull up, first placing cardboard beneath to protect the sill. Next time you paint trim, remove any paint that drips in the gaps with a damp cloth and leave the window open as it dries.

how not to hang a TV THE FAIL “Before I put up a new TV on our bedroom wall, I did every measurement four times, except the depth of the wall. Luckily I walked into the room next door after the first anchor screw went in because it went completely through the wall! I removed it so nobody would maim themselves, but what am I supposed to do now?” —Peter, Jefferson City, MO THE FIX First patch up the hole in the wall with spackle or DAP Eclipse rapid wall repair patches, says HGTV contractor Chip Wade. Then grab a stud finder. “For a TV to be secure, it needs to be mounted on the two studs in the wall closest to where it will be centered—that’s why a TV mount has holes every inch or so,” he says. “To hang, use lag bolts that are at least 1 ½ inches long. I like to put two into each stud, and I predrill holes for them. The bolts will be secure.”
that photo display is driving me up a… THE FAIL “I made a gallery wall in our family room with a sports theme for my husband. I centered his framed New York City Marathon race bib, a photo, and a medal over the sofa, then hung three sports magazine covers on either side, but it just looks bare and…wrong.” —Peggy, Livingston, NJ THE FIX “It’s great to pick a beloved item and anchor a gallery wall around it,” says Angela Belt, a designer in West Hartford, CT. “You just don’t want an arrangement that’s perfectly symmetrical—imbalance keeps a gallery wall interesting.” In this case, putting magazine covers in different-size frames with mats and loosely clustering them around the centerpiece would jazz things up. “Hang items about 8 to 10 inches above the sofa and no more than 4 to 5 inches apart or it can look like a chessboard,” says Belt.
one shower tile install down the drain THE FAIL “My husband and I watch a lot of home reno shows, so we felt confident about tiling our shower. We installed ceramic tiles pretty easily, spread grout over them, and had dinner without wiping off the excess. Big mistake—it all hardened up. Eventually I got most off the tiles, but the grout in between was crusty and uneven. I’ve never gotten around to fixing it.” —Susan, Arvada, CO THE FIX “It won’t take long, Susan!” says Wade. Sponge grout haze remover all over the tile and grout (it’s faster than targeting just the grout and won’t hurt the tile), then wipe off with a clean sponge. Use an oscillating tool with a diamond dust bit to shave off about ⅛ inch of grout. Dampen tiles with a clean sponge (it helps grout come off easier), apply a fresh layer of grout, and wipe tiles clean within 10 minutes. 52 HGTV Magazine

how bad is it to not shovel snow off your deck? Next time you’re sipping hot cocoa in your kitchen as you peer out at some fluffy snow, take comfort in knowing that well-maintained decks built to code shouldn’t collapse under a pileup of powder, says Lowe’s project expert Hunter Macfarlane. Shoveling could actually be worse—all-metal or metal-edge shovels can create a flurry of scratches and gouges on wood or composite deck material that you might not even notice until spring, when the snow melts. “If snow reaches the railing and sits there for days,” he says, “consider doing some shoveling only to avoid aging the deck more quickly.” Whenever you need to carve out an exit path or a route to your grill, a corn broom (for lighter snow) and a nylon push broom (for heavier snow) will do it gently.

how bad is it to leave damp clothes in the washing machine? If only at dinner do you recall the laundry you popped in before breakfast, it’s not a total wash. It typically takes 12 hours before a damp load begins to grow mildew and smell funky, says textile expert Patric Richardson, who runs The Laundry Evangelist website. Even if you forget about it for days (oops!), a rewash with a scoop of oxygen bleach will freshen things right back up. In case the machine smells dank, treat it to a deep clean: Pour a gallon of vinegar and a pound of borax into the drum and run it through the longest, hottest cycle. Oh, and if you’ve never fully explored your machine’s features, check for a fan option; some keep air circulating up to 24 hours after a cycle ends.

Slow and steady wins the race. “If you don’t get injured by going from zero to 60, at a minimum you’re going to have a pretty miserable experience,” says Cedric Bryant, Ph.D., president and chief science officer of the American Council on Exercise. You could pull or strain a muscle, or end up so achy you might be put off from sticking with it. Think 30 minutes of a low-intensity cardio three or four times a week (pacing rule of thumb: you should be able to talk while working out but not sing) and two days a week of a resistance workout. To avoid feeling frustrated by, say, how sluggish your mile is, says Bryant, “focus on checking the mental box that you got moving!”

It’s no wonder people get confused by this veggie’s split personality: Recipes often don’t specify which part to use. The white bulbs have a stronger flavor, but if you’re cooking you’ll be fine with chopping up the entire scallion since the taste mellows with heat and blends in, says cooking instructor Pamela Salzman, author of Quicker Than Quick. When using scallions in a salad or as a garnish for soup or avocado toast, stick with the green shoots or the dish will taste too onion-y. Salzman’s favorite way to use up leftovers of either part: “Give them a quick sauté for an egg scramble or put in place of onion in guacamole or salsa.”

how bad is it to give small amounts to various charities instead of all to one? Obviously, any charitable donation is appreciated—and nonprofits especially need it now, when cash flow is slow on the heels of end-of-year holiday donations. That said, charity pros are all for focusing on one or two charities. A larger donation will allow an organization to offer more services or do more work, and will translate into a more significant impact, says Anna Pruitt, Ph.D., an expert at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. She recommends the 80/20 formula: “Every year, budget 80% of donations to the couple of groups you’re most passionate about, and reserve 20% for discretionary or urgent situations”—say, a friend posts a GoFundMe for someone whose house had a fire. Ideally, says Pruitt, set up monthly automatic contributions to your choice charities to keep the funds flowing.

ack when Abby Luskie and her husband, Clayton, first saw this Houston, TX, home, they knew it was meant to be…sort of. “The windows were rotting, the kitchen was awkwardly laid out, and the ‘updated’ finishes done by the previous homeowners were straight out of the ’90s,” she says. “My parents are veteran fixer-uppers, so I grew up around that. But at 121 years old, this was the most ancient house I’d come across!” The interior had clean, simple, Craftsman-style lines, embraced in the early 1900s as the opposite of ornate Victorian homes. Room by room, the couple worked with designer Barbara Sweetser on upgrades. They chose a serene blue and creamy white palette, blended vintage and modern finds, and revitalized the pine and oak floors and other character-rich details. Relics of the past remind Abby that there’s been a lot of life lived here: “They make a home feel like it has a soul.” HGTV Magazine 61
kitchen This was the only room that got gutted, though the footprint stayed the same. White subway tile from Daltile was the perfect backsplash choice—timeless yet fresh in a herringbone pattern. Those Calacatta Gold marble countertops are aging imperfectly and awesomely: “I love the etching and marks they get,” says Abby, much in the same way the floors have tales to tell with their nicks and scrapes. While the original window and polished nickel pendants are of different eras, their curves echo the archways throughout the home—not typical of Craftsman homes, but beautiful.

There’s a compact 72-inch sofa from Crate & Barrel, a separate seating zone with a pair of plush blue chairs from Anthropologie, and two stools from Lulu and Georgia instead of a coffee table—easily moved for the kids’ performances.

ben and sam’s bedroom It’s not just a bunk bed from IKEA—it’s the boys’ favorite hideaway. To make mornings go smoother, Abby sewed the bottom edge of blankets to the bottom edge of fitted sheets. “Literally all they have to do is yank it up and their beds look great!” she says. The geometric polypropylene rug from Rugs USA is both indestructible and soft underfoot. Plexiglass on the window keeps it safe from ball throwing.

he likes vintage, he likes modern. As a home-renovating couple in Columbus, OH, Catherine and Bryan Williamson have perfected the art of compromise. Enter a dilapidated Victorian built in 1900. “We had always admired the old homes in our neighborhood and I’d dreamed of bringing one back to life,” says Catherine, who grew up playing hide-and-seek in the nooks and crannies of her grandparents’ Victorian. Bryan and Catherine bought their house in 2017, and, in the following two years, Bryan watched Catherine have a good old time—in his words, “This project was a lot of ‘Catherine got her way’!” The house was dim and dingy. Previous tenants had stripped away doors, mantels, and banisters. To bring glory back to The Blonde Vic, as they dubbed it, the two tore down walls, replaced windows, repaired, painted, and embellished, embellished, and embellished some more. Color is generally spare to let architectural details stand out. The end result: about as up to date as a Victorian gets. HGTV Magazine 73

bathroom Paying tribute to the small black-and-white hex tile common in Victorian-era bathrooms, the Williamsons put in 5-inch marble and basalt versions from Mission Stone & Tile. A sleek bathtub by American Standard is another updated take. “Clawfoots are smallish and the space is long,” says Catherine. Also: “Bryan really wanted it!”

bianca’s bedroom Tucked away in the turret’s second story is this light-filled nursery fit for the couple’s little princess. An arch charmingly frames the crib; it’s an old doorway leading to the landing they closed up. A sheepskin rug atop a new red oak floor (“the color is antique-y,” says Catherine) doubles as a play space. That guitar is part of a family tradition: “We play Bianca bedtime songs on it,” Bryan says.

A few books give it a boost. “I’m a serial stacker!” she says. “The look softens up the quartzite below.”
a mirror (or two) “Although people often don’t think of using mirrors in kitchens, they bring in light,” says designer Lidia Van Zyl.
