ABOUT COMMUNITY MUSIC CENTER (CMC)

In partnership with a nonprofit partner, CMC has been a popular place for music lessons and concerts in Portland since 1955. We enhance the greater Portland community by providing opportunities for all ages to learn about, make, and enjoy music. We do this through affordable music classes and lessons, free and low-cost concerts and workshops, low-cost instrument rentals, and other resources for the public.

Thrive with customized instruction. Build the skills and abilities needed to enjoy music as a participant, gaining self-confidence and developing self-expression. During the school year, individual lessons are supplemented with required attendance in a music skills class or ensemble (see below).

Enrollment Process

New-to-CMC students: Use the “application” activity number below to be put on a waiting list for an opening. Placement with an instructor depends on openings that are available at the time you apply. The CMC Private Lessson program runs through the school year 2022–23 (October to June). Lessons are scheduled between instructor and student at a mutually agreeable day and time, as verbally confirmed. Your instructor may require materials not included in registration fee. Beginners start with 30 minute lessons; advanced students (playing concertos or sonatas) move to 45 minute lessons; 60 minute lessons are provided in special cases. Suzuki, traditional, hybrid, and other instructional methods are used, depending on the instructor. Daily individual practice between classes is a required part of successful music instruction. • New Beginners: Apply using activity code 1148401

If/when a placement with a teacher is made you will be asked to set up a payment plan for lessons and attend a parent orientation class. • Continuing CMC students will receive their unique link via email from the CMC office to use for enrollment. Registration opens September 7 at 12:30pm. In order to continue lessons from summer to fall, students must enroll by the deadline of September 20. • The school year of lessons begins October 3. Students enroll for the entire school year, which is 30 weeks of lessons (October to June). • Lesson fees are due at time of registration (see Access Pass information on page 5). Good attendance and practice between lessons is expected.

During the School Year, CMC requires private lesson students to enroll in a concurrent enrichment class, or apply for an exemption if participating in similar activities elsewhere. Separate fees apply for CMC’s enrichment classes, and enrollment for the class is in addition to the private lesson registration. STRING ENSEMBLES

Playing in an ensemble is being on a team. Students rely on each other to make progress as a group. We ask that orchestra and chamber music students: • Show a high level of attendance. • Practice between classes. • Have concurrent weekly lessons at CMC or elsewhere and work on the ensemble repertoire with that teacher. CMC’s string ensemble groups are non-audition, but the instructor has final say as to the appropriate level class for each enrolled student.
