COMMENTS TO THE EDITOR “This is the magazine for people with perfect lives.” “It’s so beautiful.” “Breaking the mold.” “Love this.” “Nice.” “Thank you for the feature.” “Beautiful issue.”

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR One year ago, the first issue of Polo Lifestyles was conceptualized. It was 28 pages and it became the vision publication of our inaugural September issue. With the height of the European polo seasons in full swing, this year's August issue of Polo Lifestyles could have easily been 200+ pages, but we controlled ourselves. Even as we are "closing the book," results are coming in from tournaments around the globe. Sand polo, a perennial favorite (c'mon, who doesn't like the sea, the sun and champagne with plenty of polo?), as played on the Dorset coastline, combines fashion, food, fun, rugby and gladiator-style polo with decadent soirées. Starting on page 66, all of the action from this year's all-out event. A new recurring feature department will be our tech section, led this month by PAL-V, Aston Martin and our list of gotta-have big-boy toys for the men in your life. As an equal-opportunity institution, we bring you Stephen Silver, jeweler and fine timepiece purveyor to the tech moguls of Silicon Valley. Ever a pleasure to shop there, you won't leave empty-handed. Because what fun is that? Make the most of the Argentine Open with our extended feature of the insider connoisseur's hottest and most luxurious secret spots in and around Buenos Aires. The experts at Grand Luxury Hotels dish in our travel section. Enjoy! Best, Josh Jakobitz josh@htpolo.com

POLO CHAMP MALCOLM BORWICK ON COACHING PRINCES WILLIAM AND HARRY

Third-generation polo champion Malcolm Borwick is the world polo ambassador for Royal Salute whiskey, whose Royal Salute Cup has raised over $5 million in 10 years for Prince Harry’s charity Sentebale, aiding children in Lesotho and Botswana. Borwick talks about the sport of kings and two of its most notable players: Princes William and Harry. Where are the best players coming from? Without a doubt, Argentina. Beginning around 1900, they had everything needed to create a polo dynasty, which was: time, an equine culture, and flat land. Now, if you trace the Argentinean polo culture, it literally goes back to just two families. And in Argentina, if you’re in a polo family, you play polo and that’s all you play.

What horse breed makes the best polo pony?

For me, the perfect expression of an equine athlete is a Thoroughbred. The Argentine polo breed is basically seven-eighths Thoroughbred with a drop of Argentine Criollo genetics, which has a quieting-down influence and gives the horse more mental capacity.

Is polo a sport you must learn when young, as you did, or can it be mastered later in life? To be professional in a sport, you need to have done 10,000 hours of repetition – that’s the standard for subconscious muscle control, to be able to hit a ball with your eyes shut. If you’re 40 years old, it’s unlikely you’re going to have three hours a day for ten years to get to that professional level— even if your body was capable of reaching that goal. However, polo is a Pro Am sport; with our teams, we have one amateur and three professionals. So, you can buy a team, play alongside three professionals, and compete against some of the best polo players in the world. continued on page 63

Adam Baidawi named GQ's youngest editor-in-chief yet When GQ Middle East launches in September, it will be under the leadership of a relatively young editor in chief with an international bent. ITP Media Group, the Dubai company that’s launching GQ through a licensing agreement with Condé Nast parent Advance Media, has tapped Adam Baidawi as editor in chief for the Middle East version of the men’s fashion and culture magazine, set to launch in September. This edition will be the 21st for GQ and Baidawi, at 28 years old, the brand’s youngest editor in chief. The title publishes worldwide in countries including the U.K., Taiwan, Thailand, Russia and China. page 62

Baidawi has been writing and contributing to numerous international outlets since 2011, most recently as a correspondent for The New York Times in Australia and also as a writer and photographer for GQ Australia, with his work showing up in British GQ, as well. His articles have so far focused on style and celebrity and political profiles, but Baidawi has also written pieces on culture, technology and immigration, among other topics, from places like Colombia, North Korea, the U.S. and Iraq. Other outlets he’s worked for include Mr Porter, CNN, Vanity Fair Italia and Esquire U.K. Although London-based and raised in Australia, Baidawi was born in Abu Dhabi.

What physical strengths are required for polo? If you don’t spend a lot of time in the saddle you will never understand the sport. There is no gym work to replicate the feeling of actually clamping onto the saddle. The best analogy I can give is to get one of those big wobble balls, and try to sit on it, just squeezing with your knees, without your feet touching the ground. You’ll fall off in 30 seconds. Do that for an hour and see how tired you get. That is the type of repetitive training you need, with a very strong core and a great sense of balance. The force used when hitting the ball is where your conditioning work comes in.

Any other tips for aspiring polo players? Repetition, repetition, repetition. You’ve got to practice relentlessly. When I’m working with younger players who are really aspirational about the sport, I tell them to spend hours with stick and ball until hitting the ball becomes so natural that in a game environment, it just happens.

You’ve played with both Prince William and Prince Harry. Which one is more aggressive? Polo is often a reflection of your personality. Prince Harry is by nature very optimistic as a person and always pushing boundaries, always challenging people, and that’s how he plays polo. The Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, is a defensive player—he’s very controlled, and plays really well in his role in the back.

What is your favorite post-match drink and meal? Jaffa Cakes—little chocolate-orange biscuits! They’re very English, and by complete coincidence, they happen to have the perfect nutritional value of the proper levels of salts, fats, and sugars to replenish your energy. As for my favorite drink, I’ll have a Royal Salute 21-Year-Old with water—one finger of whiskey and one finger of water, just as Colin Scott, the Royal Salute Master Blender, would tell us to do. page 63

SAND POLO

Last month, the Dorset coastline welcomed 10,000 adoring fans at the largest beach polo event in the world. Now in its 11th year, the British Beach Polo Championship 2018 is a potent combination of fast action, gladiatorial horse polo, beach rugby, glamour, and decadent parties on the platinum beaches of the south coast. Spectators watched the professionals up close and personal as they maneuvered their athletic polo ponies with agility and power. There were four competitive polo teams playing while simultaneously demonstrating spectacular horsemanship on the sand as they competed for the title of British Beach Polo Champion 2018.

great conditions, is we had a super-fast Corba Rib boat racing against the polo ponies… we normally do this with a car, but we thought we’d do it with the best thoroughbred ponies racing against each other on the beach - and managed to throw in the Rib, which was hilarious.” One of the ponies won, with the Rib coming in second ahead of the other pony. In addition to those events, there was also an ‘Ibiza Fashion Festival’ and two nights of entertainment in the festival marquee. Friday welcomed top club DJs to get the revelry started, while Saturday night’s closing party saw a sophisticated party crowd dance the night away against the backdrop of the beautiful Jurassic coast.

A major part of this year’s championships, was the involvement of the Household Cavalry Foundation (HCF). The HCF, the Household Cavalry’s official charity, supports operational casualties, serving soldiers, veterans and their families. Wheeler said, “We have raised an awful lot of money for our chosen charity, which is why Tobias Ellwood is particularly keen to come along and present the prize to the winners in the charity race. This year has been superb, we were blessed with perfect weather and a magnificent beach and appreciate the close co-operation with the local Council. Your New Luxury Mobility Solution ASTON MARTIN INTRODUCES A PERSONAL AIRCRAFT CONCEPT

GETTING YOUR ASTON MARTIN AIRBORNE USUALLY ENDS BADLY, BUT THIS THREE-PERSON VOTL BRINGS THE MARQUE’S SEXY DESIGN SENSIBILITIES TO THE SKY. The biennial Farnborough International Airshow (July 16 through 22) kicked off outside of London with decidedly British flair. Not only did UK Prime Minister Theresa May personally open the show—trumpeting the event’s ability to bring the aviation industry together despite the upcoming roll out of Brexit—but one of the biggest announcements was a new Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VOTL) vehicle concept developed in collaboration by British organizations Aston Martin, Cranfield University, Cranfield Aerospace Solutions, and Rolls-Royce (the aerospace company, not the auto marque). The Aston Martin Volante Vision Concept is a look into the future of urban transportation, one

page 80

W W W.P O LO LI FESTYL ES .COM

“With the population in urban areas continuing to grow, congestion in towns and cities will become increasingly demanding. We need to look at alternative solutions to reduce congestion, cut pollution and improve mobility,” says Dr. Andy Palmer, CEO of Aston Martin. “The Volante Vision Concept is the ultimate luxury mobility solution.” in which daily commuter vehicles are not limited to land. The aircraft would have room for three adults and would be flown completely autonomously, thanks to technology developed at Cransfield University. For its part, Rolls-Royce has already developed hybrid-electric systems for other applications, so it will be applying its knowledge to create hybrid-electric propulsion systems designed for personal air mobility. The most readily apparent contri-

bution, however, comes from Aston Martin, whose chief creative officer, Marek Reichman—designer of the DB11, the new Vantage, and the DBS Superleggera—conceived the look of the new aircraft. Put quite simply, the Volante Vision is high-design sci-fi, with the aggressive appearance of a battle-ready star fighter crossed with the sleek refinement and curves of a sports car. From the images provided by Aston Martin, it seems that the craft will use a large central fan to get aloft, and then two propellers flank-

ing the cockpit will provide forward thrust. While the Aston Martin Volante Vision Concept is about the coolest VOTL concept we have ever seen, the companies involved have made no mention of schedules (as Uber Elevate has) or production goals, so it will likely remain a concept for the foreseeable future. That said, if we don’t see Daniel Craig flying in one of these bad boys in the next 007 movie, we’re asking for our money back.

BIG BOYS TOYS FOR MEN IN 2018

What a time to be alive. Thanks to a technology boom in the last few years, we now have a proliferation of awe-inspiring big boys toys at our disposal, ranging from the life-changing to the absolutely hilarious.

WORLD’S FIRST PRODUCTION

FLYING CAR

ONLY TWO YEARS AWAY Put your contractor on notice if you're interested in the Pal-V gyroplane, because you're going to need a 900foot landing strip. The good news is you have at least two years to figure out the zoning issues with your neighbors. That's when Pal-V expects the world's first production model flying car, the Liberty, to be available on the global market.

Specifically, the Liberty is a threewheeled automobile that converts into a two-seat gyroplane. Pal-V continues to accept orders for the Liberty, which is available in two models: the fully loaded Liberty Pioneer Edition and the base model Liberty Sport. The estimated price of the Pioneer Edition is about $600,000; and roughly $400,000 for the Sport. Pal-V plans to build only 90 examples of the Pioneer Edition and sell only 25 in the North American market. Reserving a Liberty requires a non-refundable deposit of $25,000 for the Pioneer and $10,000 for the Sport. (Pal-V says it will refund the deposits if the Liberty fails to receive certification.) Both Liberty models will have a maximum speed of just under 100 mph in driving mode and a zero-to-60-mph time of less than 9 seconds. In flying mode, both will have a high cruising

page 88

speed of nearly 100 mph and a range of about 250 miles with two people aboard and 310 miles with just a pilot.

Pal-V recommends a runway—paved or level grass—of at least 900 feet for takeoff and a 100-foot strip for landing. It’s perhaps fitting that the world’s first production flying car is a gyroplane—an unusual aircraft design that harkens back to the earliest days of powered flight and, while never completely disappearing, has always lived on the edge of mainstream aviation. Unlike a helicopter, a gyroplane’s blades are not powered by a motor; instead, they spin freely and generate lift as a result of their forward motion through the air. The vehicle’s forward thrust is provided by a separate motor and propeller, more akin to a fixedwing airplane. That’s why the Liberty needs 900 feet to take off; it cannot rise vertically like a conventional helicopter. But one of the primary advantages of the design is a much lower stall speed and easier handling. The Liberty converts from an automobile into a gyroplane in about 10 minutes—the amount of time it takes to unfold the blades, which are bundled on the roof when the vehicle is in driving mode. To operate the Liberty in the United States, you’ll need a standard driver’s license and a gyroplane license. The latter requires 30 to 40 hours of training. The company plans to offer flying lessons at its Pal-V FlyDrive Academy locations, one of which will be located in Florida.

POOL SLIDE SANDAL Gets a Stylish Upgrade

Slides aren’t exactly the height of fashion. The rubber poolside sandal was once the reserve of college dorms, of stoner guys too lazy to tie their shoes and athletes who’d slip theirs on with socks after a big game. These days, though, pool slides look a lot more chic. The best—and most glam—of the bunch come embellished with crystals and punctuated with logos: some are metallic, others woven. No matter the style, this unassuming sandal can be worn almost anywhere and everywhere—they certainly hold their own outside of the locker room. Dress them up for a night out dancing comfortably (for once!) or with a pair of shorts and a swimsuit for a day at the beach. Here, 16 stylish pairs to slide on now.

The Most Glamorous Places to Hang Out in Buenos Aires, Just in Time for the Argentine Open

page 104

W W W. P O LO LI FESTYL ES .COM ADVERTORIAL

Each spring in the Southern Hemisphere, the smell of freshly cut grass fills the Campo Argentino de Polo stadium as the world’s premier polo players gather to compete at the fifth oldest polo competition in the world.

“Although the city center is flooded with polo fans, the sport is practiced in nature, which says so much about Argentine culture,” says De Betak. “Our vast countryside is what makes Argentina so special and unique.”

Occurring every November and December on the most prominent racetrack in Buenos Aires, the annual Argentine Open Polo Tournament transforms the city into a haven for the ultra-glamorous.

The Argentine Open attracts the highest number of 10-goal players in the sport, along with the country’s most revered celebrities and influencers like Figueras and De Betak. To celebrate like a true Porteño, here’s your guide to the city’s most exclusive establishments.

“For these four weeks, Buenos Aires becomes the modern Mecca of polo,” says Nacho Figueras, one of the world’s bestknown polo players and the face of Ralph Lauren. “It’s the best time of year to visit Buenos Aires, when the best horses and best players are here at the same time.” The tournament is one of the most celebrated events in Buenos Aires, but Sofía Sanchez de Betak, Argentina’s leading art director and fashion consultant, believes it’s just one example of her country’s kinship with nature.

WHERE TO STAY Although the Argentine Open takes place in Palermo, venture to Recoleta to stay in the city’s best hotel — many of which are housed in converted mansions. Decked with crystal chandeliers, antique fireplaces, and home to an impressive art collection from Argentine artists, Palacio Duhau-Park Hyatt Buenos Aires may be the most luxurious address in the city.

WHERE TO EAT In the midst of a culinary revolution, Buenos Aires is brimming with new restaurants by the country’s most talented chefs. To dine like a true Porteño, begin an evening with steak tartare and steamed bun small plates at 416 Snack Bar before venturing to Sunae Asian Cantina, where chef Christina Sunae serves spicy Southeast Asian dishes like pumpkin khao soi, a yellow coconut curry served over egg noodles, mustard leaf pickles, shallots, and crispy noodles. To learn more about Argentina’s flourishing wine industry, book a table at iLatina, one of the city’s poshest restaurants. Previously a puerta cerrada (closed-door restaurant), iLatina serves an eightcourse tasting menu with wine pairings featuring delicacies by chef Santiago Macías, like cured Bariloche trout and beef cheek marinated in Colombian coffee and a sugarcane reduction. Perhaps the most opulent restaurant in all of Buenos Aires, a table at Casa Cavia is the most coveted reservation in the city. At a Belle Epoque mansion, chef Julieta Caruso serves spring-inspired dishes like edamame and herbs steeped in lemon broth, soba noodles topped with a crispy tempura shiso leaf, and milk tea. Pairing perfectly with each dish are cocktails by bartenders Lucas López Dávalos and Flavia Arroyo. Try the Fitzgerald, a libation that fuses juniper essence and Patagonian pear cider. Casa Cavia

After a Negroni or Vermouth aperitif, cure your every ailment when you enter Boticario, one of Palermo’s newest nightlife spots designed like an old-school pharmacy. Made to honor Argentina’s medicinal booze roots, the menu is divided into sections according to therapeutic benefit.

Be sure to try an Argentine gin and tonic with Príncipe de los Apóstoles, Giovannoni’s own brand of yerba mate–infused gin. Cheers!

To Columbia Valley wine, the Bordeaux of the Pacific Northwest Cezar Kusik | Food & Wine Contributor

The fast-flowing Columbia River rushes through the rolling, desert-like terrain of the valley, carved out thousands of years ago by glacial floods. Resulting from these floods is the diversity of the soils: silt, gravel, sand, volcanic deposits. The landscape is rugged, rich and has a primal feel to it. The region was registered as an AVA (American Viticulture Area) in 1984 and contains 50,316 acres of vineyards - slightly bigger than Napa Valley. It has 12 sub-regions with the most notable of Walla Walla Valley (locally known as Napa Valley in Blue Jeans), Red Mountain, and Yakima Valley. The terroir (the complete natural environment in which a particular wine is produced, including factors such as the soil, topography, and climate) of the region is very unique. phylloxera louse resulting in most vines of the Columbia Valley being planted on their own rootstock. Purists’ heaven! Notorious winds blowing through the vineyards keep the vines less disease prone. The volcanic and sandy loam soils offer good drainage, and being poor in nutrients, force the vines to concentrate their resources into the grape clusters. The latitude of the Valley is the same as the one of the famed French wine region of Bordeaux - and just like in Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon grape is the king here.

Nearly all Columbia Valley vineyards are irrigated. The state also enjoys a long, consistent growing season with low humidity conducive to quality grapes, and subsequently to well-balanced wines.

Other thriving thick skin grape varieties include Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Mourvedre, Petit Sirah, and some amazing recent examples of Grenache. Not to say that white grapes are marginal, they produce hauntingly aromatic wines from Riesling, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Marsanne.

Europe's Most...

Stunning Hotel Suites

From palatial penthouses in Monte-Carlo to carefully restored, historic pied-à-terre in Paris, these suites have us booking one last European getaway for the season. From its Mediterranean shores and cultural hot spots to historic sites and balmy, rosé-powered evenings, you don’t need us to remind you that Europe is a perennial favorite for summer vacations. But now, thanks to a host of recently launched luxury suites, we’ve got eight more reasons to squeeze in one more trip across the pond this season. A bi-level Riviera-view perch, a Scottish sanctuary with exclusive perks, and three Italian charmers crafted in designer style are just some of the unforgettable places where you can soak up all the continent has to offer this summer. Read on to discover the rest. SCONE & CROMBIE SUITE Relaunched in April as part of the Balmoral’s multi-million dollar hotel upgrade, this Edinburgh icon’s de facto Presidential suite has been completely redesigned by Olga Polizzi, Rocco Forte Hotel’s director of design, to be the ultimate base for families, VIPs, and visiting heads of state. Spread out over 2,368 square feet (and available with either two or three bedrooms), the sanctuary features a spacious foyer ideal for private check-ins, a private dining area, an elegant master bedroom, and a living room complete with a working fireplace and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Old Town. Named for the noted Scone Palace in Perthshire, the suite (whose previous guests have included Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor) has been crafted with top-of-the-line furnishings and materials—including tapestry-style wallpaper that nods to the hotel’s historic Victorian-era building custom-made by British fabric house Watts of Westminster. As part of Rocco Forte’s new brand-wide Suite Experience program, guests staying in the Scone & Crombie will enjoy a special cashmere turn-down service (in partnership with luxury Scottish brand Hawico) and also have access to two limited-edition experiences—Scone & Combine Land features a tour of the Duke of Roxburghe’s castle and dinner in his fishing hut, while Scone & Crombie Sea takes you out on a yacht to explore the islands and beaches of the Firth of Forth.

SPLENDID HERITAGE SUITES AT SPLENDID VENICE Formerly one of the city’s historic textile shops, the traditional Venetian-style building next door to the Splendid Venice, a Starhotels Collezione property, was recently purchased by the hotel and carefully converted into 12 oversized Heritage Suites. Drawing inspiration from the building’s and the region’s textile and glass-making traditions, designer Andrea Auletta decorated the spaces, which debuted in May, with rich pleated curtains, velvet armchairs, inlaid mirrors, and Murano-made glass pieces. Though all are 430 square feet, the suites are each individually decorated—and guests can choose between rooms with a peacock-blue or chalk-white color palette, both accented with glittering gold details. Suites also come with perks like in-room check-in, Acqua di Parma amenities, and a welcome bottle of bubbles. And, if you need a little bit more room to spread out, two of the Splendid Heritage Suites can be combined to create a two-bedroom, 1,000-square-foot Grand Suite.

GRAND PAVILION SUITE AT THE BERKLEY Soak up panoramic views of London’s swanky Belgravia neighborhood and beyond from the spectacular Grand Pavilion Suite at the Berkeley. Launched earlier this spring by interior architect Andre Fu, the suite is set inside a three-sided glass pavilion and lined by a wraparound terrace. The sliding glass walls allow for a seamless indoor-outdoor living experience and for plenty of natural light to flood the suite, which also features a living room, a dining area (with open-plan bar), a master bedroom, and his-and-her wardrobes. Design touches inside include wool-covered chaise lounges, bronze chandeliers, marble coffee tables, and an egg-shaped bathtub perfect for soaking off long days in the city. Outside, the main terrace boasts a fire pit for those chillier summer nights. Guests of this suite can enjoy use of the property’s signature Burberry trench coats along with designer pieces from the Berkeley Fashion Trunk by Vestiaire Collective during their stay. They can also enjoy exclusive access to two-Michelin-starred chef Marcus Wareing, who helms the eponymous restaurant downstairs, for dinners enjoyed in the privacy of their palatial suite.

AVANTI SUITE AT THE GRAND HOTEL EXCELSIOR Now run by the fifth generation of the Fiorentino family, the Grand Hotel Excelsior in Sorrento is an icon of the Italian coast (and an ideal getaway for yacht-loving vacationers), where everyone from King Edward VII of England and King Rama VII of Siam to Jackie Kennedy and Julia Roberts have come to enjoy la dolce vita. With its panoramic views and extensive gardens, the hotel has also hosted several movie and TV shoots—including for the 1972 Bill Wilder comedy Avanti, starring Jack Lemmon and Juliet Mills. In honor of that movie, this brand-new suite— created by combining two deluxe rooms—is decorated with select memorabilia from the film, including stills autographed by Mills (who was present for the suite’s inauguration in March) and a framed vintage LP of the soundtrack. But you don’t have to be a fan of the flick to enjoy the room; with 592 square feet of elegant indoor space and a 236-square-foot terrace overlooking the bay of Naples, this is a dreamy hideaway for all.

PRINCESS GRACE SUITE AT THE SHELBOURNE DUBLIN As part of the Shelbourne Dublin’s multi-million-euro renovation and restoration (the final stages of which have rolled out this summer) by noted designer Guy Oliver, several rooms of the stately grande dame have been redone, including its top Princess Grace Suite named in honor of that famous former guest. The two-bedroom haven now features sophisticated decor punctuated by pops of color (like dusty-rose sofas and ruby-hued dining-table chairs) and handpicked antiques sourced from local dealers, including a fully restored writing table culled from the hotel’s own archives. Original landscape oil paintings by John Leech, vintage chandeliers, a fireplace, and a window seat overlooking St. Stephen’s Green add even more charm. JOSEPHINE BAKER SUITE Though born in the United States, legendary dancer, entertainer, and artist Josephine Baker made her name in France, where she became an icon of the Jazz Age. (She also made notable contributions to the civil rights movement and assisted the French Resistance during World War II, even earning the title of Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur for her efforts.) Baker was also a fan of Le Bristol Hotel—in 1975, she even celebrated the opening night of her 50year musical retrospective here with a dinner and party for 250 guests, including Princess Grace of Monaco, Mick Jagger, and Sophia Loren. In honor of that relationship, this April the hotel (now a part of the Oetker Collection) revealed the new Josephine Baker Suite, which boasts views of the Eiffel Tower and more from its top-floor position. In addition to framed photographs of Baker taken on the property and a 1934 portrait of her by photographer George Hovningen-Huene, the 753-squarefoot space features pleated silk lampshades, Louis XVI–style rosewood furnishings, marble bathroom flooring, and fabrics by Pierre Frey, Loro Piana, and Manuel Canovas. The suite can also be connected to a Junior Suite to create a 1,259-square-foot Parisian pied-à-terre. page 124

DUOMO PRESIDENTIAL SUITE When you book this stunning new suite, you’ll not only enjoy uninterrupted views of Florence and its Duomo, but you’ll also get a whole wing of the historic Hotel Savoy to yourself. Created as part of the property’s recent renovation, the 1,600-squarefoot, two-bedroom apartment has been envisioned by designer Olga Polizzi in a residential style. The space is accented by plenty of opulent Florentine touches—think herringbone floors and bronze tables to Il Bonzetto gold-leaf mirrors, baroque-style art, and vintage objets sourced from the local Mercato dei Pulci (flea market). Carrara marble, mosaic tiles, C&C Milano throw pillows, and a sculpture by Ceccarelli Ceramics further add to the elegant aesthetic, while gorgeous living and dining areas, a king-sized bed, and a fully serviced private bar ensure guests will have to tear themselves away come checkout time.

PRINCESS GRACE SUITE AT THE HOTEL DE PARIS MONTE-CARLO As the legendary Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo nears the finish line of its four-year transformation, it has been slowly opening new areas to guests. It debuted the Rotunda and Le Grill restaurant late last year and then unveiled its crown jewel in February: the breathtaking Princess Grace Suite, inspired by (and named for) one of the hotel’s most celebrated regulars. Spread out over two floors and nearly 9,800 square feet, the contemporary-chic Princess Grace Suite features 180-degree views of the Mediterranean, extensive outdoor space, two bedrooms, an office, living and dining areas, a kitchen, and multiple bathrooms. Bonuses like a sauna, heated infinity pool, and hot tub also put the suite toe to toe with some of the most over-the-top suites in the region. Design materials like precious woods, mother-of-pearl, agate panels, and straw marquetry are further elevated by nods to Princess Grace, from displays of her favorite poetry and books to the apricot-hued Grace roses lining the terrace.

Below, a set of luxe spots around the world, which, among their many perks, include accommodations. Stay the night (or two or three), savor all the amenities that come with membership, and then go home to consider your application.

SOHO HOUSE, CHICAGO

In line with the brand’s 20 total houses worldwide, no detail is left undone at Soho House Chicago. This century-old converted warehouse called The Allis (named after the family that owned the former belt factory) is full of age-old beauty. The House’s entry level foyer best exemplifies this, with tufted leather club chairs, velvet chesterfield couches, antique chandeliers, and worn Persian rugs that punctuate the weathered wooden plank floors. Upstairs, members and hotel guests can indulge in the house amenities: dreamy rooms, a tricked-out 17,000 square foot gym with a vintage-inspired professional boxing ring, and steam rooms, plus a rooftop poolrestaurant-bar with sweeping city views. If six stories of rustic-luxe isn’t enough to sweep you off your feet, consider the little things that really make this place stand out: hotel room

credenzas stacked with vintage tins of freshbaked chocolate chip cookies and herbal teas, a crystal cocktail set complete with a collection of fresh citrus fruit for an impromptu in-suite soirée, a Cowshed-stocked bathroom (no travel size samples here), and drawers full of homey perks like hair straighteners, hot water bottles, and comic books. What’s best: Unlike the other Houses, this location has ample areas open to the public, which means whether you’re awaiting your application acceptance, a Chicago native curious about all of the fuss, or find yourself with some spare time, you can get a sneak peek of the city’s place to be.

THE BATTERY, SAN FRANCISCO

It’s nearly impossible to get a membership at this invite-only social club in San Francisco’s Financial District. You’ve got to be nominated by one of the 4,800 existing members, impress a top-secret membership committee, and then wait as long as a year to be accepted. But wait! Though the Battery is private, they have a 14-suite hotel that’s open to the public, designed by Ken Fulk. A reservation at the hotel gives guests a golden (albeit temporary) ticket to the full club, which means you’ve got free rein to use all of the fabulous facilities: 717B and Living Room restaurants, the speakeasy-style Musto Bar (and the hidden bookcase door that unlocks The Green Room, another secret hideaway), a communal library, a light-filled basement home to a fitness center and spa, and an outdoor garden courtyard. page 131

These luxe, membership-only spots around the world include, among their many perks, superb accommodations. Stay the night (or two or three), savor all the amenities that come with membership, and then go home to consider your application. When it comes to rooms, size may vary slightly (they skew large), but none skimp on individualized Fulk-ified style (think cognac leather headboards, expansive velvet sectionals, and an eclectic collection of reading materials) and off-the-charts character thanks to floor to ceiling windows, exposed steel beams, and red brick. Unsurprisingly, top-ofthe-line amenities like locally sourced snacks, a Nespresso machine, and Malin + Goetz products add to the indulgent in-room experience.

PETIT ERMITAGE LOS ANGELES

Simply put: the members- and guests-only private rooftop atop the Petit Ermitage is like a little slice of heaven (Morocco meets Spain meets secret garden) tucked away in the heart of West Hollywood. The 79-suite hotel more closely resembles an unassuming apartment building–that is, until you step inside. Walls are lined with art from the owner’s personal collection, including de Kooning, Dali, and Rauschenberg, and floors are covered in brightly colored, hand-woven Turkish rugs. Start the day with sun salutations (and sweeping 360 views of the city) during morning yoga. If yoga’s not your thing, there’s always the on-site gym, complete with a giraffe mural. Alternatively, take a dip in the fresh saltwater pool, grab a seat in the garden and work amongst the hummingbirds and butterflies, or chill in one of the poolside cabanas that are covered in kumquat trees. When the food cravings really kick in, the rooftop restaurant provides glob-

page 132

ally inspired fare that’s equally parts Californian and Egyptian—and entirely out of this world. Cap off the night sipping on specially crafted cocktails with ingredients from local farmers markets. Of course, it wouldn’t be Hollywood without a good movie. Snuggle up under the stars every Monday evening for screening on the fire deck.

THE ASSEMBLAGE NEW YORK

Co-working meets commune at The Assemblage, in the heart of New York City’s Flatiron District. While the 12-floor NoMad House offers the good stuff you’d come to find at a myriad of clubs across the city (lounges, restaurant, library, screening room, rooftop), it’s the daily wellness programming—kundalini yoga, sound meditation, breath work—that makes The Assemblage unique. Additionally, members and guests can partake in private workshops on topics ranging from wellness and consciousness to culture, capital, and technology. Even better: you don’t need a membership or a friend with an in to get, well...in. The club opens its doors to the public for several of the events. If you come to find you can’t get enough of the club life, book an apartment at one of The Assemblage John Street’s studio and one-bedroom apartments, in the Financial District. Available for a day, a month, a year, and so on, your own private apartment comes decorated (by New York City-based design firm Meyer Davis), and fully stocked with all the amenities of a five star hotel: daily housekeeping, laundry service, and free WiFi.

AND BEYOND...

What of all those times you’re traveling? When London calls, pick up and pack your bags for The Hospital Club in Covent Garden. Beloved by media types for its digital arts programming and impressive screening room, a stay gets you into seven stories of member space including the restaurant, bar, lounges, galleries, cinema, and pool–all with strong retro vibes. If Eastern Europe is more your speed, don’t miss Brodyland, a Budapest creative community with five locations, where no two buildings are the same in design or purpose. Without membership, the best way to experience it all is at Brody House, an 11-room boutique hotel with coffee bars and cute nooks for co-working, or Paulay House, a penthouse spot for short or longer term stays. In South America, The Clubhouse Buenos Aires, a hidden haven set in a humbly restored four-story townhouse in Palermo Soho is as good as it gets. Make yourself at home as you make new friends in the cavernous rooms with steel beams, concrete floors, deep velvet sofas, and walls of Warhols, or wander outside in the ivy-walled garden by the pool. Among other activities, late night parties here are legendary, and draw a creative international crowd looking to let loose. You won’t want to retire to bed, until you remember the incomparable (and complimentary) brunch that’s in your future. Non-membership, it seems, has its perks.

Bulgari's iconic design in Shanghai The iconic Italian jewelry house has opened an extravagant new hotel in China’s futuristic financial capital.

It’s a balmy day in Shanghai and the Pudong skyline glitters in the distance like a scene from a futuristic film. Directly opposite, divided by the Huangpu River, lies a scene from a bygone era: The Bund, a strip of European architecture that echoes the city’s opulent pre-war years. The dramatic juxtaposition of the past and present defines the aesthetic of China’s most dynamic metropolis—and there is no better place to take in the view than atop the newly unveiled Bulgari Hotel. “Shanghai is one of the most vivacious cities in the world,” says Bulgari’s CEO, Jean-Christophe Babin. “It’s a must-see destination in terms of energy, history, and culture, and those are the cities where we find our gems.” Babin lovingly refers to Bulgari’s expanding hotel portfolio as a “collection of gems,” in tune with its jewelry-making origins. “The theme for this gem is contemporary glamour,” he explains, amidst the monochromatic backdrop that distinguishes Bulgari

Hotels around the world. It’s a fitting concept for the hotel that comprises a sleek 48-story monolith towering over the neoclassical Chamber of Commerce—a relic from 1916 that has been delicately restored to its former glory. “The building is one of the few remaining historical landmarks of the 20th century,” explains Babin, who is enthusiastic about fusing Bulgari’s brilliance with Shanghai’s storied heritage. Italian architectural firm Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel was responsible for renovating the iconic building (the firm was also behind Bulgari’s hotels in Beijing and Dubai), imbuing the hotel with a unique vision of la dolce vita with polished public spaces that are enlivened with archive photographs and flashes of starlets in dazzling jewels.

Understated elegance flows into the 82 rooms and suites, the sprawling spa and indoor pool, the artisan chocolate boutique, and the soaring dining options, which include the Il Ristorante by Michelin chef Niko Romito. As with all of Bulgari’s hospitality endeavors, the hotel is destined to become a vibrant part of the city’s social fabric, where sophisticated locals mix with well-heeled travelers.

SUMMER TIPS

FOR FAT LOSS PART III STRESS, INFLAMMATION, VITAMIN D AND WORKOUTS Reduce your inflammation levels.

By Mark Wine BA; CSCS; USAW; PT, PES, CES

Fat loss goes beyond diets and workouts. Analyzing and subjecting yourself to specific nutritional protocols has shown significant results in increasing fat burning. As well, taking out stress-related situations, or simply learning how to better cope with them, has shown significant fat loss results. Here are some fat reduction tips that I like to call “bullpen tips” because they are often not known and therefore not acted upon.

Elevated inflammation levels within the body has been linked to arthritis, periods of immobility (i.e. less activity), and high levels of body fat. Eat nutrient dense dark leafy greens, such as kale, spinach, collard greens, and dark romaine lettuce to reduce inflammation and increase your health. Consume omega-3 enriched olive oil in plenty because it increases heart health and burns fat. Consume antioxidant enriched dark chocolate, which has been shown to reduce inflammation, increase health, and even fight cancer. Lastly, darker colored fruit (berries), which are lower glycemic and packed with cancer fighting antioxidants, should become your main source of fruit.

Supplement with Magnesium and Vitamin D. If available, have your blood tested for both of these. Vitamin D has been linked to reduced belly fat levels.

However, many persons are vitamin D deficient and should therefore supplement with this nutrient. Magnesium has been linked to decreased cortisol levels. Cortisol is a naturally produced hormone that increases fat storage. The RDA of magnesium should be based upon each individual; some experts suggest a baseline of 500mg daily.

Reduce your stress levels. Elevated levels of stress have been linked to prominent levels of cortisol, which can damage the body and increase fat storage. Cortisol has been shown to decrease cognitive performance and even lead to periods of mood changes and depression. Eat-eat-eat before your workouts. Training on an empty stomach is counterintuitive. The reason we workout is to increase lean muscle growth and decrease body fat levels. However, training on an empty stomach can do the opposite. Training “hun-

gry” has been shown to limit fat burning and lean muscle growth. Training on an empty stomach is even more detrimental to excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), which is how much your metabolic rate is increased after working out. EPOC is able to remain elevated for up to 24 hours! The longer EPOC is in effect, which means your RMR will be higher, your body will be able to burn fat and increase lean muscle.

Sleep. Sleep, Sleep. Persons who get adequate sleep generally have a better body fat composition. Sleep is our recovery time and recovery leads to enhanced muscular growth and lower levels of cortisol. 7-9 hours per night is the general recommendation. With summer here, now is the time to get back into shape. If you are already in shape, then now is the time to get into crazy shape. Whether your results come from workouts, nutrition, or your overall lifestyle, follow these tips for greater results.

MOLD YOUR MIND FUEL YOUR

FIRE Perspective is Everything

he said, “Life is a creation of the mind.” Shakespeare put it this way when he said, “There is nothing good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” Our perspective is what shapes the way we view others, the world around us, and in some ways, the way we act.

Joey Velez, M.A., M.B.A. There has been one question that has gone unanswered and has been at the center of many debates: is the glass half full or half empty? Everyone will have a different answer with different reasoning, both of which are ultimately based off of their individual perspective. Perspective is everything. Your perspective could be the difference between happiness or sadness, success or failure, stepping out of your comfort zone or staying put. This is not about right versus wrong, or saying that there is only one perspective to have, but more so about developing an understanding that their are multiple perspectives and various ways to look at what is going on around you. Buddha remarked on the enormous impact of perspective on human psychology when

Throughout high school and even into the early stages of college, I viewed everything in a negative manner; some say I was a pessimist. I felt I was not good enough, if I was not invited somewhere it was because nobody liked me, if I was wrong it meant that I was a bad person, I held the most idiotic grudges against people for no reason, I viewed the proverbial glass as half empty. As I grew older and made my way through graduate school, I learned that perspective is in our control and that nobody makes us feel a certain way, our thoughts and our perspective make us feel a certain way.

perspective. Perspective is not something you can improve by lifting weights, changing nutritional habits, or taking medication, it takes increasing your self-awareness and being able to take a step back to broaden the situation. Next time you are in an argument, take a step back and see where that other person is coming from; next time there is a miscommunication with someone, take a step back and try to understand why they would be confused; next time a negative situation or outcome occurs, take a step back and think about what the alternative could have been. These are areas to consider when trying to broaden your perspective. This is not saying you need to change your mind, or that you have to agree with the other person, but increasing your self-awareness and taking these steps to look at conversations differently may increase mindfulness in your perspective and understanding of what is going on around you.

Situations, obstacles, and challenges are going to be placed in front of you without notice, and you are expected to deal with them. Ill-informed people are all around us and are going to say whatever it is that they want, whether you like it or not. You cannot control whether these situations take place, you cannot control who says what, but what you can control is how you look at those situations and how you respond to those people.

Developing and enhancing your perspective can lead to improved relationships, improved communication skills, and a better understanding of yourself and of the people that you come in contact with on a daily basis.

My life has become more positive and more joyful at an exponential rate once I started to change my

This is not about being right or wrong, it is about broadening your scope of the world that you live in!

Each person is unique in their own right, therefore, disagreements and differing opinions are a guarantee.
