A Message from our Leadership 2021 may not have been the “end of the pandemic” as we once hoped, but we have much to be proud of and thankful for as we continue to provide services – no matter what. Thanks to the generosity of you and all our supporters, we have been able to keep our doors open. From our health centers to our education programs, community engagement, advocacy, fundraising, and administration – our staff, board, and volunteers have proven yet again how adaptable, resilient, and creative they can be in the face of many challenges. We are deeply grateful for your investment in Planned Parenthood Association of Utah (PPAU) and Planned Parenthood Action Council of Utah (PPAC). Your faith in our work buoys us up. It is because of your support that our community can count on PPAU – especially during a global pandemic and the increased threats against abortion access, which we know disproportionately impact some communities. With so much uncertainty for the future of abortion access in 2022 and a looming decision from the Supreme Court that will determine the future of Roe v. Wade, we want to assure you that we aren’t going anywhere. We know that the majority of Utahns support our work and want sexual and reproductive health care to remain accessible and affordable. We will continue to do all we can to protect reproductive rights and the ability for each of us to live our best lives. Please help us celebrate all the work we did in 2021! Our resilient and committed staff kept our focus on our patients, students, and advocates. This year our teams did mission critical work including building skills to center equity. We continued to provide quality, compassionate care, innovative education, fought for reproductive rights, and raised thousands of dollars to keep this work going. Love Notes from our Patients I don’t know what I would do without this Planned Parenthood. I didn’t have insurance most my life or a family physician. I grew up struggling financially and never learned about sexual education as an adolescent, but when I needed help with contraceptives, pregnancy tests, STD testing, and many other important services, the staff at this location was always there with the crucial information I needed and the resources for me to live a healthy life and make my own sexual choices.
I sincerely love Planned Parenthood and all that they do. I’ve gone to PP for both of my IUD insertions and they have always done an amazing job. All of the staff go above and beyond to make me feel comfortable and calm. I recommend PP to everyone I know.
Every time I visit, I honestly feel more like family than a patient. In other offices, the staff are in and out and there’s no ‘human interaction.’ At Planned Parenthood, they remember me. I am asked about how my daughter is, and how life has been. I am able to discuss my sexual life with ease and comfort with no fear of judgment.
Every time I come here, I feel listened to in a way that I haven’t experienced in other medical offices. At times when I’ve felt fragile and embarrassed and afraid, the medical providers in this office have been overwhelmingly caring, nonjudgmental, and reassuring. My experience yesterday was exactly what I’ve come to expect from Planned Parenthood - I received high quality medical care from a team that I felt truly cared about my well-being. I am so grateful to have access to this office.

Education Through our research-based education programs, we work hard to provide all Utahns with the accurate, reliable information they need to make responsible decisions and stay healthy. In 2021, our educators continued with innovative virtual teaching and were thrilled to be able to return to some in-person programs and instruction where possible to do so safely.

During the 2020-2021 school year, Teen Council had 41 members in three locations representing Salt Lake County West, Salt Lake County East, and Summit/Wasatch Counties. They gave 165 presentations, reaching 4,121 people. Teen Council members reached 1,017 through one-on-one education sessions and 811 people through class series. This powerful program improves teen health through access to sex education. Teen Council members develop leadership skills and teach peers in the classroom and community to positively influence teen sexual health.
Teen Mom Strong is a free support group for pregnant and parenting teens, providing a safe space for teens to learn how to be the person and parent they want to be. Compared to their peers in Utah who are not in the program, our members complete schooling and pursue employment at far higher rates. This year 10 moms are enrolled in the program, and thanks to a grant from Salt Lake County, participants received tablets and rent assistance.

Public Affairs Planned Parenthood aims to cultivate a culture of proud and authentic sexuality and identity, free from stigma and judgment. We do this by advocating for laws, policies, and everyday practices that support and promote sexual and reproductive freedom. Through our Public Affairs department, which includes community engagement, advocacy, electoral organizing, legislative policy work, marketing and communications, and our sister organization Planned Parenthood Action Council of Utah, we aim to build a world where every Utahn can live their best life.
Community Engagement Thanks to vaccines, summer 2021 saw a return to some in-person events, including tabling at outdoor community events and two trainings for new volunteers. We trained 35 new volunteers in 2021 bringing our total volunteers to 206. We tabled at 15 community events, reaching more than 3,100 people. Our volunteers contributed 184 hours of their time! We have SURF clubs at 8 college campuses: Utah State, Weber State, University of Utah, Westminister, Utah Valley, Utah StateEastern, Southern Utah, and Dixie State. SURF presidents and members develop critical leadership skills and lead the movement for reproductive freedom on their campuses.
2021 Legislative Session The 2021 Legislative session was the first in many years where no new abortion restrictions were passed! Our team participated almost 100% remotely.

Our Latinx Engagement expanded this year with new partnerships and increased Spanish language digital content, including recording an episode about abortion with Self-Conchas Podcast. We continued our work with Comunidades Unidas Promotoras and youth and joined a new Latinx and LGBTQ+ Community Council, UNIDXS.

Rally & March for Abortion Justice On October 2, we joined community partners, grassroots organizers, and more than 1000 Utahns to march and rally for abortion justice!

Development We are more grateful than ever for the support of our generous donors, who in these uncertain times, make it possible for us to keep our promise that “these doors stay open” every day. We are proud to say that our donor base consists of diverse communities throughout the state. We value all donations from $1.00 to $100,000 and are so appreciative of Utahns’ support of sexual and reproductive health care and education. Over the last year, we surpassed our annual fundraising goal by 20% to make up for loss of the Title X grant thanks to 11,594 gifts and 2,925 donors. Despite a year of all virtual events, all our fundraisers had their most successful year ever!
50th Anniversary Virtual Gala + Gatherings for Good Funds Raised: $330,666 It was two years in the making, but we finally celebrated our 50th Anniversary with a virtual gala on December 18th! The evening included a silent auction and many video tributes from dear friends, former and current staff, community partners, and policy makers. This event, along with the many individual “Gatherings for Good” house parties hosted over the past two years have shown us once again that our supporters stand with PP – no matter what!

Annual Logan Chocolate Festival The Logan Chocolate Festival raised the bar yet again, bringing in $47,450 at this year’s “Home Edition”! We are so grateful to the committed volunteers and Planned Parenthood supporters who share their love of chocolate and Planned Parenthood and “showed up” yet again despite the challenges of a virtual event.
Live PC Give PC Funds Raised: $26,271 The Park City Foundation Day of Giving supports our education programs in Summit County. This year, we had 156 donors and took 6th place in the Healthy Minds and Bodies category.
Bans Off Our Bodies Fundraiser for PPAC Utah In October, we hosted a virtual fundraiser for Planned Parenthood Action Council, our 501(c)4 organization, raising over $25,000 - the largest amount for a c4 event ever! The evening included a keynote from physician and author, Dr. Meera Shah, a musical performance from Madam Bandit (Mindy Gledhill), and abortion storytellers.

Planned Parenthood has been there for me since I was young, without health care, and didn’t know where to turn. Race Equity & Inclusion Planned Parenthood is committed to advancing health equity for all, including our patients and staff. This year, PPAU continued the Mind Sciences on Difference: Featuring Our Brains on Race training program for staff. All staff have now completed the program, which equips participants with language and skills on how to discuss, confront, and minimize implicit bias, racial anxiety, and stereotype threats in the workplace. PPAU teams are doing the hard work of operationalizing equity - putting their skills to work to improve patient care, education, and advocacy.
