2007 OUTLOOK The Cowgirls have five newcomers this season in Teo Costin, Inga Efimenko, Petra Gedelj, Romana Hueller and Victoria Martinez. All five will have an opportunity to break into the starting lineup. McNeese will begin its season with four consecutive home games. The Cowgirls’ season opener is Feb. 3 against Centenary. McNeese will then host Southern University on Feb. 17, Louisiana College on Feb. 23 and UL-Monroe on March 2. Southland Conference play will begin March 4 when the Cowgirls travel to Texas State. The Southland Conference Tournament is scheduled for April 20-23 in San Antonio, TX.
McNeese State University will field a young and inexperienced team this season after posting a 8-9 overall record and 4-6 Southland Conference record last season. The Cowgirls will be looking to return to the Southland Conference Tournament after failing to qualify for the tournament for first time in the last 12 years. The miss was also the first under head coach Pat McCain’s tenure. McCain has led the Cowgirls squad to 12 consecutive Southland Conference appearances in her 13 years with the Cowgirls. This season, the Cowgirls return three players including senior Urska Dobersek, junior Natascha Jongeneel and sophomore Anna Bihorac. Dobersek will play the no. 1 singles posted a 9-8 overall record last season with a 6-7 record at no. 2 and 3-1 at no. 1. She teamed with Ann Grobbelaar as the Cowgirls’ no. 1 doubles team that went 10-6 overall. Jongeneel posted a 5-10 overall record last season, playing at no. 4, 5 and 6 positions. Bihorac was 2-14 on the year and saw action at no. 5 and 6. 2

HEAD COACH
Pat McCain is in her 14th season as head coach of the Cowgirls. McCain has compiled a 132-131 career won-loss record while at the helm of the women’s tennis program. McCain has guided the Cowgirls to 10 or more victories in five of the last six seasons and seven out of the last nine. In 2005, McCain guided the Cowgirls to a school record 18 victories and the programs best winning percent (.783). In the last five of the last six years, McCain’s teams have won at least 50% of its matches each season. She has guided McNeese to 12 consecutive Southland Conference Tournament appearances. Her 2004 team advanced to the Southland Conference Tournament Championship match for the first time in school history. Another first for the program was a regional ranking. McNeese finished the 2004 season ranked 15th in the Southwest Region. One of the areas top tennis players and teachers, McCain is a former member of McNeese’s first women’s intercollegiate tennis squad. McCain is a native of Sulphur, La. and resides in Moss Bluff, La. She coached the Sam Houston High girls team in 1993 and has been playing and teaching for the past 26 years. McCain also serves as Tennis Director for the City of Lake Charles. The USTA “1-2-3” program is taught to over 200 children each summer. As a player, McCain ranked in the state, having been ranked as high as no. 3 in the women’s singles and no. 3 doubles. She has also won several city titles. McCain is married to Lloyd McCain and they have two children- Aaron and Kelly.

Magali Risoleo is in her second season as assistant coach.. Risoleo was a four year letterwinner for the Cowgirls (2002-05) and compiled a 54-26 singles career record with a .675 winning percent. The native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Risoleo won 10 or more matches each season with the Cowgirls. In 2003, she posted the best singles record (18-3). Her .857 winning percent that season is McNeese’s seventh best all-time. In 2002, she posted the best doubles record of
the season with a record of 13-4. In her final season with the Cowgirls, Risoleo teamed with Urska Dobersek to make up the Southland Conference’s first team All-SLC no. 3 doubles team that posted a 11-5

By car, MSU is only 2 1/2 hours from Houston, Texas and Baton Rouge, and only 3 1/2 hours from New Orleans. The Lake Charles Regional Airport is located about five miles South of the university. Lake Charles was once a haven for pirates like Jean Lafitte who hid contraband along the labyrinth of backwater and bayous. The city’s beginning can be traced to the 1790s when the first French settlers came to carve homesteads out of the dense pine forests. Barthelemy LeBleu established the first home six miles East of Lake Charles (now known as LeBleu Settlement). Charles Sallier married LeBleu’s daughter and in 1803 built the first log cabin on the shell beach of Lake Charles. The surrounding area was named after the Indian Chief “Crying Eagle” which in French became Calcasieu, that name today designating the river that runs on the edges of the city and up the middle of the parish. After the Civil War, Lake Charles became a lumber
with a healthy schooner trade, swamped with orders for lumber to help rebuild the war torn South. When lumber began to wane, the city opened a deep water port in 1923, paving the way for industrial development. Today this link to the Gulf accommodates up to 13 ships at a time. Lake Charles is a city of 85,000 diverse people but the influence of the French Acadians is seen in local cuisine, language and customs. In many of the small towns and bayous near Lake Charles, Cajun French is still spoken. The city is a center for international commerce with its port, abundant oil and gas resources, a sprawling petrochemical complex and a aviation facility. It has also become a favorite vacation port with riverboat casino’s plying its waters. The city is set in the midst of a sportsman’s paradisefishing (saltwater and fresh), hunting (duck, geese, deer, squirrel, rabbit, turkey), shrimping and crabbing are

McNeese State University has provided, for over a half century, service to its community and state and to the students who seek to secure their future through higher education. McNeese opened its doors in 1939 as Lake Charles Junior College and as a division of the Louisiana State University system. Name changes later were made to John McNeese Junior College (1940) and to McNeese State (1950) when the university separated from LSU. In 1970 the school obtained its present name of McNeese State University. McNeese was named after John McNeese, a pioneer Southwest Louisiana educator who served as the first superintendent of education in Calcasieu Parish. He was also a cattle rancher and was renowned for making the first cattle drive across the Sabine River, thus the school’s nickname of Cowboys. The university is located on 566 acres (99-acre) main campus, 402- acre MSU Farm, a 65- acre athletic plant and student apartment complex and Burton Coliseum. With a full-time faculty of over 290, McNeese’s 7,800 students can choose from more than 80 degree programs offered by the Colleges of Business, Education, Engineering and Technology, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Science, the Division of General and Basic Studies and the Dore’ School of Graduate Studies. There are students from 56 parishes, 34 states and 49 countries.

FACILITY
McNeese State plays all its home matches at its recreational courts located on campus across from the Recreational Complex. From 1995 to 2001, McNeese played its home matches at McMurry Park in Sulphur, La. McNeese hosted the Southland Conference Tournament there in 1995. Beginning with the 2002 season, McNeese returned to campus for its home matches after its courts received a facelift. There are eight all-weather courts with lights. McNeese played host to the 2004 Southland Conference Championships. That year the Cowgirls advanced to the championship match for the first time in school history but fell 4-0 to regular season champion Texas-Arlington.
