JUNE 2013 I imagine most of you are aware of this since I mentioned it at several meetings and during one or two worship services, but I missed about half of our annual conference in May to attend our daughter Sara’s baccalaureate and graduation ceremonies at Messiah College. Win Hall and Loretta Zimmerman faithfully participated in the whole conference, so you should talk to them to get the complete report. Once again this year I was encouraged simply by being a part of that large gathering that reminded me that, even as each of us is a part of this congregation, New Holland UMC is a part of the larger church, which is a part of the Church Universal and the gates of hell will not prevail against us! And I do want to mention two things that were discussed at the annual conference: --Imagine No Malaria. The bishop of the Western PA Conference spoke on Friday morning about this effort to eradicate malaria (a disease that, as we know, is preventable and treatable) from the African continent. He told us that a child dies of malaria in Africa every 60 seconds. This is a real tragedy; BUT, when the Imagine No Malaria project began several years ago, a child died every 30 seconds, so we have made a difference. Imagine No Malaria is an example of something that is done right. United Methodist Churches from across the nation are involved in this effort along with other churches, community groups, businesses and individuals. While we see progress, the speaker encouraged us to continue the struggle so that we can witness that number changing to a child dying every 5 minutes, then every hour, day, month, and so forth. 2

I realize, of course, that there are many worthy causes and great ministry opportunities. We need to choose how we should best distribute our funds (that often seem limited). I am glad, though, that our church has a history of supporting Imagine No Malaria. By God’s grace and with His help, we are making a difference! --Stand In The Gap! Dr. Mary White, Eastern PA Conference Lay Leader, spoke to the assembly on Thursday. The portion of her message that stuck with me the most was when she quoted from Ezekiel 22:30 saying that we are called to “stand in the gap.” At that time, cities were protected by stone walls. If your wall was falling down, you were open to be attacked, and you would need someone to stand in that gap to provide protection. It was true thousands of years ago and is still true today. Our world is full of dangers – pathways that lead to destruction. As the church, we have the responsibility and privilege of standing in the gap, showing the way of salvation. What a great honor! Feel free to contact me with any questions regarding Annual Conference. If I do not know the answers, I will direct you to Win or Loretta. Thanks and blessings, Pastor Ray Our Worship Service starts at 9:00 a.m. every Sunday. Discipleship Opportunity! I shared with the Church Council in May that we are planning a small group discipleship training opportunity. This will be based on Rick Warren’s “40 Days of Purpose.” You will hear more about it in the coming months (we will likely begin around the middle of October). This is just to let you know that it is coming. I

4 believe we all benefit by becoming better disciples of Jesus Christ (that is our calling after all – to be and to make disciples). As we strive to reach those in the community with the Good News of the Gospel, it just makes sense that we also are growing in that Good News. Stay tuned for more information! -- Pastor Ray

Local UM Bishop Returns from Visit to U.S. - Mexico Border Immerses into border life during immigration policy reform consideration As the United States Senate prepares to consider a major bill on immigration policy reform, local United Methodist Bishop Peggy Johnson has just returned home from a visit to the U.S.-Mexico border near San Diego, where she joined 69 other bishops from around the U.S., Africa, Asia and Europe. The purpose of the bishops' visit on May 7 was to immerse themselves in the reality of life at the border and sharpen their focus on how The United Methodist Church can be in ministry with border residents. "The visit to the border reminds me once again of the scourge of racism and classism on the planet. I pray for and will work for the day when people can realize that only when everyone has justice and bread and access to life then there will be peace," stated Bishop Peggy Johnson. Some of the bishops visited the San Ysidro Port of Entry, the busiest border crossing in the world, as well as the border wall, the most striking symbol of U.S. border enforcement policies, and the Plaza de las Americas.

Others crossed into Mexico and visited the Plaza del Bordo, an open-air migrant encampment that includes both internal migrants, as well as immigrants who have crossed into the U.S., been detained by the U.S. Border Patrol and have been repatriated or returned to Mexico. The bishops distributed health kits to the community and visited a ministry of the Methodist Church of Mexico. Additionally, they joined for a service of Holy Communion and hiked through the Tijuana Estuary, one of the last undeveloped areas in the region. The hike allowed participants to experience a bit of the terrain that immigrants crossing over into the U.S. navigate. Border community leaders, leaders of the Methodist Church of Mexico, area United Methodists and news media joined the bishops during the visit.
