Kirsten Hemrich

Statement In my current body of work, I continue my exploration of abstraction through mixed media painting, ceramics, and artist books. My paintings incorporate symbolic imagery, garish color, and dream-like atmospheres. My ceramics play with classical forms, re-imagined expressively with plastic colors. As a whole, my work is informed by poetry and myth in a process that reconciles awkwardness and beauty. Each work is an investigation of origin. Abstract forms take on the shape of birds, clouds, and natural phenomena--loaded symbols that speak to memory, collective myth, and storied beginning.

Bio Kirsten Hemrich is a Richmond, VA-based artist and illustrator. After graduating from the University of Virginia in 2018 with degrees in studio art and poetry writing, she received a competitive Aunspaugh Fellowship to continue developing her creative practice as a postgraduate. Her work has been published and exhibited internationally. She is the recipient of multiple awards for her work including a Culture Works grant. She is also a member of the radical international artist collective, The Printmakers Left.
