SPRING HAS SPRUNG “I am going to try to pay attention to the spring. I am going to look around at all the flowers, and look up at the hectic trees. I am going to close my eyes and listen.” Anne Lamott We contemplate the welcomed return of spring, as it has once again sprung reliably from the earth with the esteem of renewed life and sensory abundance. Evidenced by the ready buds and celebrated flora of our long awaited season, this present catalog blooms with works from seven of our gallery artists. This garden of prints, photographs and encaustic media features documentary and conceptually grounded works that utilize both traditional and alternative photographic methods. Expounding upon the mundane still life, prints from Peter Cochrane’s The Wild Beasts series personify each composition as a portrait of a cherished mentor or friend. Cochrane uses a 19th century medium format camera to capture these symbolic arrangements in high detail. Made without a camera or film, Amanda Means realizes her larger-than-life images by projecting live plant specimens onto photographic paper. In the striking black and white impressions from her series Flower Light, Means “makes images of plants that are so big and powerful that people have to stop and pay attention to them, even though plants are small and silent.” Her emphasis to look and listen reminds viewers of the miracle of floral architecture, and the magnitude of its impermanence.
