BASTIDORES BACKSTAGE En una realidad urbana como la actual, donde el artificio es la norma, se diría que el interés se ha mudado del escenario a sus bastidores. Allí, tras el reluciente telón, lejos de la atenta vigilancia del ojo público, descubrimos inesperadas realidades que deben su existencia a su condición anónima.
In today’s urban reality, where artifice is the norm, one could say that attention has been diverted from ‘stage’ to ‘backstage’. There, behind the glittering curtain, far from the constant watchfulness of the public eye, we discover unexpected realities that owe their existence to their anonymous condition.
Entre los bastidores de la gran ciudad encontramos una realidad ajena a las normas de uso, estética y conducta de la ciudad/escenario. Una realidad precaria y autónoma, que desafía los parámetros más sagrados de la ordenación urbana, donde conceptos como “propiedad privada”, “regulación del uso del suelo” o “uniformidad del paisaje urbano” son ideas, si no ignoradas por completo, siempre reinterpretadas libremente.
Between the frames of the big city we find another reality disconnected from the standards of use, aesthetics and behaviour of the ‘city stage’. A precarious and autonomous reality that challenges the most sacred parameters of the urban order, where concepts such as “private property”, “regulation of the use of space” or “uniformity of the urban landscape” are ideas, when not totally ignored, always freely reinterpreted.
A pesar de todo, no hay que olvidar que se trata de prácticas clandestinas que a menudo pagan el caro precio de la marginalidad. La autonomía que las hace posibles se convierte en desamparo cuando llega el momento de defender (o reivindicar como propios) sus territorios y usos auto-conquistados. La misma 'invisibilidad' que resguarda este tipo de prácticas es también su principal amenaza. En el mejor de los casos lograrán mantenerse al margen, entre bastidores, y sobrevivirán. En el peor de los casos, serán desmanteladas y, si persisten las fuerzas, buscarán nuevos territorios donde volver a empezar.
In spite of everything, we should not forget that this kind of practices are clandestine and often pay the high price of marginality. The autonomy that makes them possible turns into abandonment when it comes to defending (or claiming as its own) their self-conquered territories and uses. The same 'invisibility' that shelters these kind of practies is also their main threat. The best that can happen to them is to stay in the fringes, protected between the frames of the big city, the worst to be dismantled. If that happens, they might abandon or, if they have the strenght for it, they will look for new territories where to start again.
