La Ciudad Jubilada / The Retired City

A “Yo no puedo estar todo el día encerrado en casa o en el casal, mirando la tele o jugando a las cartas, a mí eso no me va. Cuando te jubilas tienes que hacer cosas que te gusten, ¿si no de qué sirve? Yo con el huerto me entretengo, unos días hago más, otros días hago menos y otros días no hago nada, pero venirme aquí cada mañana es como una obligación, como una responsabilidad que tengo conmigo mismo.

Piensa que hay gente aquí que lleva más de treinta años con el huerto, y cuando uno falta lo coge otro, es como si fuera una cadena…”

“I can’t be all day watching TV or playing cards, shut in my house or in the old people's home, that doesn’t go with me. When you are retired you have to do what you like to do, if not what’s the point? With the garden I amuse myself.

Some days I do more, some days I do less and some days I do nothing, but to come here every morning is my duty, it’s a responsibility towards myself. There is people here that have been over thirty years with the garden, and when they are gone another one picks it up, it’s like a chain…”
